The Kotmale Dam is a large hydroelectric and irrigation dam in Kotmale, Sri Lanka. The dam generates power from three 67 MW turbines, totalling the installed capacity to 201 MW, making it the second largest hydroelectric power station in Sri Lanka. Construction on the dam began in August 1979 and was ceremonially completed in February 1985. The dam forms the Kotmale Reservoir, which was renamed to Gamini Dissanayake Reservoir on 11 April 2003 following a request by Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe.

Very beautiful scenic and Picturesque. It is one of the very important dams in Sri lanka. they have made a prototype of this dam inside to make people understand how this actually works. That makes us very interesting. Washroom facility is available in the place where you buy tickets. One has to buy tickets to go over dam to watch. You are not allowed to stand over dam or park your car over dam for long. Very beautiful scenic views.

Kotmale dam and reservior are the most popular tourist attractions of the area. There is museum and view point at Kotmale Reservior. You can have a fantastic view towards the reservior from this view point. The Dam also can be visited but entry point is about 1km down the view point.

We should buy tickets when entering. Local adult ticket costs 30LKR . We Can view the whole dam from the viewpoint. The museum has miniature model of the dam, type of turbine used and photographs obtained while building.

Really good place. Great vibe. Climate, view, location, everything is okay. You have to wear a mask before entering and that's a must. I can give 5 stars without hesitation.

Upper kothmale dam is fantastic place. Mind blowing scenic beauty. The catchment area is greener and cool. Kothmale museum gives a nice view of the dam. And also we were allowed to walk on the dam wall. Relatively huge structure.

Nice to visit place. It shows the history and the time line of events in making this massive engineering marvel. Tickets should be purchased before visiting the dam from the ticket counter placed a bit away from the entrance.

We visited the dam as part of a trip with a tuktuk in the area. First stop is at the museum at the dam viewpoint, where they charge the entry fee. The view from there was indeed very nice, providing the opportunity for some great photos of the dam and the lake. The museum itself had a few interesting pictures of the construction, but didn't contain too many other interesting things. Next up is that you can walk over the dam, which also provides a good opportunity for some impressive photos. Unfortunately, it is not possible to view any actual rooms or machines of the dam or the power plant. But nevertheless, it's worth to visit the dam and to spend around 30 min - 1h there.

The kotmale was the old constructions, with develops the hydro potential. it is situated between hills is indeed a breathtaking view. When watching its cool, clear waters ripple in the gentle breeze. there are two view points one is the museum view point and the other is dam view point. you have to walk a quiet long to the dam view.

Visited here a few years back. There was a town before the dam was built. And as they needed to build the dam, they decided to flood the town but decided to not destroy the structures. You can see this during the dry season when there is no water to be fill.

Both dam and museum are closed for the public due to security reasons. It is 600m in length and 87m tall in a huge dam. It is the second-largest hydroelectric power station in Sri Lanka. But
