Despite the various negative reviews I had read I decided to go there because I considered it a must (given the historical importance) but you can definitely avoid it (especially if you have a limited budget). The museum is absolutely not worth the price you are going to pay (5000 pesos in November 2022, price for foreign tourists). It is perhaps one of the most expensive museums in all of Argentina. It is also perhaps the only indoor place where you will feel cold in Ushuaia. The museum needs a museological reform, it is almost only very long explanatory panels (in English and Spanish) that tire even the greatest museum lovers like me. You can avoid paying and read almost everything online. They say there is an audio guide but it doesn't always work (I just gave up but it should also be available in Portuguese and Italian). Definitely not suitable for children, they will get tired. The number of people who can enter is not limited or well managed so that sometimes it is just too crowded. The ticket includes other museums, or rather other rooms or exhibitions, which may be interesting but once again are absolutely not worth the price you are going to pay. You can return again with the same ticket within 48 hours if you have it stamped at the entrance and you still feel like it.

Ticket price has increased to 6100 pesos. Interesting museum as it covers various topics like maritime, marine life, the Antarctic, the prisons history and even indigenous tribes like the Yamanas. My biggest issue with this place is how unstructured the layout is. You'll be reading about penguins in one section but then right next to it you're reading about life in the prison. The general flow of information is random and information could be more concise instead of very lengthy paragraphs to read. Various topics are located in different parts of the prison but I wish information flowed in a way that made sense. It's certainly interesting to walk through a repurposed prison and even visit the original cells. If you want to learn more about the history I still highly recommend it.

It’s a large museum with a lot to see. It’s nice of them to allow multiple entrance within 48 hours.

It is a must go if you are interested in the history behind Ushuaia. I found the museum interesting, but the display was all over the place. They've put different presentations on each cell of the old jail, which is a very good idea, the problem is, that they are not particularly organized. There isn't a section for each display, so you can go from "life in prison" to "Antarctica research" to "famous prisoner" to "Life in Ushuaia" randomly. And the thing is, those categories are things I just thought out for this review, they are not signs that you actually find in the museum. All that, plus a really expensive ticket for what we did there left us with a bitter sweet taste. Still, I do not regret going.

Beautiful musuem. So much to.learn. they have made the prisoners center of attention. That was just beautiful. Very thoughtfully designed musuem. It can take around 2-3 hours

Quite large museum, with different exhibitions. Unfortunately I managed to go through parts of maritime, Antarctica, and old Ushuaia. There are also prison museum, native people's one, naval one etc. To explore all of it, several hours would be needed.

Historisch und grauenvolle Geschichte Ushuaias lernt man hier kennen. Ganz empfehlenswert für Interessierte die sich für die Geschichte von Ushuaia interessieren.

It’s a nice museum but it could be a bit better divided between the different themes they expose in there. You will learn about the history of Ushuaia, the history of the prison itself, maritime history, sea life and art.

Excellent museum and also an interesting building and area to walk around. There are several old ships and trains and things outside that are too big to fit inside the museum. Guided tours are only in Spanish. The same former prison complex has four museums and an art gallery.

This was worth the time and money because of all there is to be seen. The entire prison has been turned into various exhibitions and displays. One can easily spend 1.5-2 hours here. Every Cell - has something to see and read about. Highly recommend. Exhibits are in Spanish and English. Staff is multilingual. Some displays are older than others, some are touch screen digital - so there's lots to be had. At least 2 gift shops and 2 places to mail postcards, etc from. #mailedfromprison Just watch your belongings. Left a camera out and it was taken. :-( sadness (and hence no photos to share).

A must seen to understand the history of the area. There is an option for 400 pesos of seeing all the museum's (there are together there). Once that you are there, it feels that you've travelled back in time 100 years (that was my feeling anyway). There is WiFi available (not too good but nice to have it) and also an overpriced gift shop inside. Nice staff and a free guide tour at 11 am and some other time I've forgotten. I recommend it.

Fantastic historic jail of Ushuaia, Argentina, now preserved as museum. The building is in excellent condition. One of the aisle is an art gallery. Very nice to visit. Same the rest of the "Museo Marítimo". Guided tours: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Also by paying an extra fee you can have earphones which you can have a very good idea of the whole prison and its museum. Worth to visit!!

This place was a lot of fun. Very easy to spend a few hours exploring the history and art of the area. Loved the displays and the building. I can't imagine what it was like to be a resident when the facility was in operation

Cool story and fully explained in English and Spanish with possibility of audio guide for 50ARpesos. Find it a bit out of date but interesting to know the history of the town!

It talks about the many voyages which helped put the island on the map. Moreover, it speaks about how the city developed through the jail and prisoners which were sent here.

There is no museology in the place, and they charge you more than Louvre would. The placement of material seems apparently randomic and most are replica to the originals. The english translation is many times wrong, and so you have to resort on going from spanish to english. The booklet is messy and of poor quality. Again, all of this for a very high price.

I can genuinely say I’ve never experienced something like this. This place is over 100 years old, eerie with the energy that’s been here, vast, and has endless rooms and little galleries with so much history. You can tell a lot of effort has gone into curating this museum and I learned a lot. It’s kind of expensive at 16,500 pesos, but if nothing else, take a visit here for the novelty. I spent 2 hours here but could have spent even more if I went though everything.

Really interesting museum with loads to see. Leave plenty of time to explore and the audio guide is really helpful. Tickets are valid for 2 days which is really helpful

Intense history that cannot be denied , a necessary part of your Ushuaia visit!

We loved the museum, it offered fascinating information, everything was translated in English. The museum is huge and is certainly worth the entry fee! I would save half a day for it in order to have enough time to see most of the exhibited items. You can send a post card to your relatives and friends from there and buy many great souvenirs for a very reasonable price!

Interesting museum that just has far, far too much information presented in a completely haphazard and random way. It’s incredibly difficult to follow any sort of historical timeline, plus most of the English translations feel like they came straight from Google translate 15years ago. 6200ARS for tourists also feels overpriced, although you can get a stamp for free to come back the day after you first visit. If they could revamp it to tell more of a chronological story it would be super interesting but currently it’s just a barrage of standalone information boards.

One of the best museums that I can ever visit! You really need two days to explore it. You can do that with the same ticket. No need to pay twice. 4-stars because even that it is being visited by a lot of Europeans, US citizens, etc, there are only a few explanations of what you see in English language!

I liked the variety of topics covered. You can view the old prison, learn about the native people that used to live here, learn about boating/fishing, look at the art gallery, etc. also if you don’t have time to finish seeing everything, get your ticket stamped before leaving and you can come back again the next day

We had a really fun morning in this museum. The model ships and associated stories we're fascinating as were the prison exhibits. We spent a couple of hours walking around reading everything and it held our interest well. The Antarctic and prisons of the world sections were pretty poorly organized, though, and some of the translations on the plaques was not great. Definitely recommend the museum to get a taste of the area's history.

With free 6hours to use, I read some rating on this museum that totally demotivate to visit it, but we still give it a try. Honestly, it really worth the expensive ticket fee. A lot of information and curiosities, specially for those that are about or just finish an expedition to Antartica. It is not a 'WOW' moment but spend almost 3 hours with quality

Not worth the ($20 blue dollar) per person rate. Information all over the place, and old. Their defence is that they are not funded, but honestly I dont see how this is any better than a simple Google search on the topics.

Not just a maritime museum, but one with a bit of art, a bit of history about being a prison, a bit of history of European conquest and decimation of the indigenous people... a good bit more interesting than I expected, although I'd still keep your expectations modest. The dioramas in particular are a bit dated.

The museum is worth the fee. Lots of reading for sure, but I did enjoy the history presented. We visited on a Sunday and it was not very busy.

Wonderful use of space, one ticket good for all museums in the prison, excellent value. The Antarctic Museum was excellent, the Maritime displays and models were interesting. Fine Art gallery wings were captivating. Ticket is good for 48hrs so I went back to finish what I could not on the first round. Would visit again 👍

Highly recommend checking this place out. Is a really interesting museum that contains a lot of information and a very interesting layout. Plenty to see and when you get an entry you will be able to leave and come back the next day. It is good for 48 hours.

Was going to kill some time before my flight but didn't have enough pesos to warrant the 5,000ps price tag. Having seen the photos from others I was shocked at the high price of admission.
