Located next to St. Paul's Cathedral, the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the iconic dome that dominates the skyline of Valletta. It sits a little off the main tourist paths (close to the Valletta-Sliema water taxi) and provides a welcome respite from the crowds and the summer heat. The original was destroyed during WWII and reconstructed in the 80's.

The first church was built around 1570 on the designs of Girolamo Cassar. In 1895, Pope Leo XIII elevated the church to the rank of Minor Basilica. Seriously damaged during the Second World War and had to be rebuilt. The new church was built 1958+1981. The church is a major tourist attraction of Malta and UNESCO Listed Valletta. The main attraction in the interior is a painting of Our Lady of Mount Carmel dating from the early 17th century.

That's Dome!!!! Is for sure one reference point in La Valletta. The church itself is essential but beautiful there are 12(numerology)big pillar and one beautiful dome. On the sides there are few altar to saints. The echo there is really impressive.

The basilica that makes the Valletta skyline famous. Once you are up close it is hard to get a shot of the dome. But inside is also impressive and gives you a chance to make a donation to the church.

Although it is difficult to photograph the outside of the basilica with a wide shot as it is located in narrow streets, its dome stands out impressively against the skyline of Valletta. Otherwise, its interior is nothing special - just another Catholic basilica.

Situated in Valletta, easily found, this is one beautiful church! Not bombastic, not overly done, just simply, plain beautiful. Peaceful, serene. The sculptured walls, the dome, the statue of Our Lady, so realistic and richly adorned, the amazing altar, the colourful floor, all contribute to its utter beauty. A definitely must visit.

Very beautiful and characteristic church, visible from almost everywhere around Valletta. But inside Valletta the church is a bit hidden away in small narrow streets and bit easy to overlook.

Wort a visit. I like the openness of the church and how bright it is. The paintings and statues on display are pompous but very nice to look at. Be aware that there are special opening hours.

Peaceful and beautiful, the floors were the most polished I've seen in any church! If you give the lady at the desk a donation she will gift you with a small pendant/badge

Exciting dome and marble floor. The church is a little hidden in a small street across the Main Street at Valletta. This cathedral has elliptical dome, very high, and 12 marble columns. Must to see, if you visit Valletta.

I think my father and I only saw this cathedral outside while going on a boat trip in September 2015. It looks absolutely beautiful. We are the visitors from Dublin, Ireland 🇮🇪

I don't do religion but the beauty and peace here is lovely. A far more modern building than it looks with a glorious great oval dome.

The dome is very impressive. I would also like to point at the stone work.

Gorgeous and stunning small cathedral. The opening hours a little bit too short and the front door isn't too big. Entering with a baby pushchair was a little bit complicated, but it worthed.

One of the more underrated churches in Valetta. It is lesser known than the other ones but still a sight to behold. The clear white dome is a huge contrast to the fresco ceiling of other churches nearby. I was able to catch part of a mass service here on a weekend and there was a choir. The acoustics in this place are quite good for the size of the structure. Overall worth it to at least take a peak inside or sit for an entire Sunday mass, if that's your thing. Good historical landmark!

We just entered on a Sunday evening around 19:00, the priest was holding the Eucharist. It was lovely. Didn't pay anything at that time.

Beautiful church in the heart of Valletta. A relatively new church built in the 60s but definitely worth a visit as the stone work is exquisite as is also the marble floor.

The star of the city skyline, looks great from the surrounding towns, beautiful inside too and not overcrowded like the centre of Valetta.

A must visit for anyone visiting Valletta for the first time. The famous dome of this church can be seen from the nearby cities when approaching Valletta. The church itself is a spacious one and it is a gathering place for the local people on a Saturday morning when the priest has holds a brief speech about life. Wear appropriate clothes or else it will not be respectful for the other visitors. Do not use flash if you want to take pictures inside.
