UPDATE: RETURN DECEMBER 2019 If you are culinarily (ok, invented word) curious, willing to explore the gustatory world far beyond the traditional Venetian fare, Ai Mercanti is for you. Tucked away down an alley off a narrow street across two bridges from our great hotel (Rosa Salva), Ai Mercanti is an enclave of the eclectic. (Note: We dined at Ai Mercanti in Sept. 2018 and their “hot dog” special still holds a high place in my dining memory bank.) We made sure they were open at holiday time, and having mentioned we had been there before, and the hot dog, were told they had a new special…”hamburger.” To repeat: Ai Mercanti takes pride in being different. Exhibit A – “apparentely crispy egg with potato foam and anchovy” (house specialty). Add sweetbreads and eel and you get the feeling this is not your usual pasta/antipasto place. Back to the hamburger, an ensemble that included a succulent sirloin patty couched in a sesame roll, with sides of cabbage, two strips of bacon, small ‘omelette’ and Dijon mustard. Different is the understatement. Our waiter/navigator, Mr. Diego, was personable, attentive and “kindly assertive.” He knows his stuff and you should let his guidance flow. Our foursome enjoyed a cheese plate starter – six cheeses and 3 jams including a “green tomato” potion. Entrees included duck breast with buckwheat kumquat orange and ginger; not-your-usual spaghetti imbued with local olive oil, (for me hold the) garlic and chili peppers (mild); paccheri with ricotta and chard. A bottle of fine red wine and a pink (no kidding) pinot grigio. A dessert of sweet potato spiced cake with smoked milk ice cream. Total tab for four = 185 euros. If you are willing to separate from traditional Venetian dining, Ai Mercanti is an experience worth….experiencing. Be brave! We had this place on our five-night Venetian culinary itinerary first and foremost because of the TA reviews…especially the “push back” ones from the owner. We had to meet this guy…and we knew we’d better be there on time or he would show us the door. All kidding aside Ai Mercanti came off as a pleasant and relaxing upscale restaurant that you definitely need a map – or fantastic guide - to find. Now about that hot dog…listed just like that on the menu…but not your American ballpark or BBQ variety. Rather a tasty blend of meats and spices served in a substantial roll. For this mustard-only guy pondering a hot dog with pineapple topping caused some anxiety but my apprehension turned to complete satisfaction. It worked! Wait staff professional and courteous. Extensive menu listings and elaborate wine list. Despite what other reviewers are saying the prices were surprisingly reasonable…especially when you realize it’s Venice…in high season. Worth finding for fine dining. Bravo, Ai Mercanti!

My husband and I were looking for somewhere great to enjoy dinner while in Venice and couldn't be happier with what we found at ai mercanti. The dishes are thoughtfully composed with a focus on simplicity and quality. Each ingredient really shines here. The service was excellent and the wine recommendation was spot on. You absolutely must eat here. Don't forget to try the homemade limoncello!

Must visit in Venice! The food was amazing, probably the best risotto I’ve ever had (and I’ve tried quite a few, I’m a self proclaimed food enthusiast). The staff was friendly and attentive - our server ensured to clarify whether we have any food allergies, and he spoke to my husband in Spanish (his language) and to me in English (my language) which was such a nice touch to show his effort. One tip that was shared with me by our waiter - for the white chocolate mousse, try to make sure you have all elements of the dish in one spoon when you take a bite (including the caramelized capers, marmalade and honey sesame crisp). If you love chocolate - the chocolate interpretations dessert is a must try. Special thank you to the restaurant for keeping a donations for Ukraine box near the entrance, warmed my heart to see it ❤️ One of my favorite places from the Michelin guide. Will definitely visit again!

This is a tough one to review, as the whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts. The food was overall a bit hit or miss, but the hits were outstanding. Service was the same with one server effusive, welcoming and helpful and the other a bit cold, albeit still attentive and professional. The ambiance is simple but clean and elegant. On to the food. The crispy egg definitely stole the show and was quite amazing both in appearance and taste. 5 stars for that dish for sure. The smoked mackerel was unique, and creative. Tasty, but I’m not sure the components paired together really worked. I personally would have just preferred the lightly smoked fish by itself. The croaker entree was excellent, and frankly one of the best cooked pieces of fish I have had in a long time. Perfectly seasoned too. The pasta with red shrimp was a bit of a miss. Just ok. The sauce was underwhelming and the pasta just a bit too thick and chewy. The cheese plate was good with a few nice pieces and a few just so-so. One cheese still had a fair amount of hard rind on it which was a miss. The dessert however was sublime: the pan a cotta with apricots and peppercorn and a salty cookie crumble base. Amazing both in taste and texture. One of the best desserts we’ve enjoyed. The wine was similar. First we tried was overly acidic and didn’t pair well with our appetizers. The second however was eye-opening - a nice zibibbo which had an aromatic and sweet ice wine like nose, but was dry and not sweet at all on the palette. A nice contrast and surprise. So although a few dishes were less than stellar, I can’t help but be pleased overall with the meal given the strong dishes being outstanding, especially for the price.

This meal was incredible. The food was amazing. My only complaint was it was quite warm in the restaurant. But the food was exceptional and elegant. The best dish of my entire Italy trip was the surprising antipasti of fish with goat cheese and peaches. It was an odd combination that worked beautifully.

Amazing food and wine selection indeed. Located down a small alley way with a few tables of courtyard seatings which I absolutely loved. I went there for a late lunch, had grilled octopus for starter- everything on the dish was so flavorful and compliment each other really well. The pasta was a bit weaker, but the handmade mint fettuccini was refreshing with a salty kick of fish roe. Will be back next time I’m in Venice.

We found Venetian fare to be rather average as far as Italian food goes. Hard to pick a favourite as all the dishes were delicious, wish we could have ordered the entire menu.
