Avoid at all costs! This is a massive tourist trap with overpriced low-quality coffee and inattentive service. I ordered an apple strudel and asked if it came with custard. Yes it does. May I have it hot please? Arrogantly told it always comes hot. The apple strudle was old and soggy. The custard was carelessly poured over the strudle and looked messy and unattractive. Cafe Central at least serves this in a jug. The custard was cold so was the apple strudel. The melange aka Viennese cappuccino was ok nothing special. My waiter did not clean my table although I had asked for it. I got up myself walked to the reception and got the disinfectant myself and cleaned the table. Another audacity was to charge me extra for the “hot” custard. At no point have I been made aware that this would cost extra. Absolutely outraged and so unimpressed. Let’s not talk about the broken tableware. Avoid!

Friendly waitstaff despite being a tourist and even trying to order a drink in German. Our waiter was patient with us and offered recommendations from the menu. They had great portion sizes and excellent coffee options. Overall a great cafe with reasonably priced dishes and beverages. It was quite popular even after the lunch rush on a weekend. There was a line out the door. It was not a long wait but if you prefer a seat right away, I would suggest going on a weekday.

Beautiful historical cafe in the heart of Vienna (worth reading up on its history) Unfortunately due to the pandemic standards of service may have slipped. Staff were either new or nonexistent. Music was live and was a highlight for us. Coffee was also delicious

Lovely traditional Viennese cafe. It’s quite spacious and grand. Perfect for people watching or just for studying/reading/thinking. The service is good: we were greeted and seated promptly. My friends had the traditional Viennese schnitzel which they reported to being light and not too oily while I had the Apple strudel which was great- you can taste and see actual apple pieces and it was light with the perfect pastry crunch. Coffee was really good as well. Not too busy and the live piano performance added extra charm to the place

Nice place, good coffee very friendly and not too pricey. Very spacious place. Maybe it could do with a little refreshing without killing the original spirit of the place. When this place opened it must have been something. Today it looks a bit tired. I still love those type of places. When places modernise the price modernises with it.

Beautiful historic coffee place. It's just as regal and full of history as one would think, the coffee was good and the Sacher cake was nice and flavory. Sadly the staff wasn't friendly and this for me damped the experience of a place I was very much looking forward visiting. But all in all, it's worth visiting.

The coffee was small, the servers were not friendly but also not unfriendly. But the Wienerschnitzel (from the pig) was amazing and much better than anything you get in the first district. Also the vegetarian Köndel were really good.

If their was absolutely nothing to say about the food we ordered (the famouse schnitzel and the Sperl salad) we sadly have to say that service was not as good as expected. The waiter we had was polite-ish, and you could tell he wasn't going to do any effort to be more agreable. When there was a misunderstanding about service (tip) being not included in the bill, he even became annoyed at us. On the whole, I would recommend this café for its food, but not for its staff...

Absolutely amazing! We ordered zwetschenfleck, which was not what we origally planned, yet tasted like heaven. As soon as we decided to take them, the waiter quickly got them and served them to us. It was the last 2 pieces left, and the crumbles were still dry and fresh. The quality is superb. I had hot milk and whipped cream. The cream was served separately, which was really nice, otherwise, it would have melted by the time it's been served. The milk is hot at the perfect temperature, and whipped cream is so worth it, either with cake or having it alone. It made me extremely contented. I really like enjoyed my time here, the food, the service and everything. Service was so nice, unlike other cafés I've been in Vienna. As i spoke German, they responded to me in German, I don't feel judged or treated differently as I am a foreigner. I would leave a huge tip if I had the ability to! The desserts are reasonably priced, Café Sperl definitely deserves its reputation. 11 out of 10 recommended!

It is a quiet, serene, and historic cafe. It is in a walking distance from Karlsplaz. Sperl Schnitte is like a wafer with multiple thin layers enhancing texture. I had a cup of moka coffee together with it. Moka coffee was too little to me but no complaints. Since it is not a busy cafe I didn’t feel any pressure to leave soon. A good cafe to take a rest even for tourists.

If you want a classic Viennese coffee shop experience yoy can definitely add Sperl to the list. The decor takes you back in history and the atmosphere has something of a nostalgia. There were no milk alternatives but the espresso was tasty!

With a rich and long history, Café Sperl is deeply linked with today's Viennese coffee culture. The interior is as elegant as it's exterior and offered a wide range of coffees and pastries. Highly recommend!

We came here by chance and what a nice find! Service was efficient, food/ drinks yummy and prices fair. We had the best Apfelstrudel, the waiter was very friendly and even tried speaking Portuguese with us! The tiny downside is that the couches could be refurbished (fabric is faded in some spaces a) but I guess that adds to the Café’s charm and authenticity =D

We were here for breakfast. They serve classic Vien breakfasts like sausages, eggs etc. Coffee is too small by me. Place can be also full, we were lucky to have a table instantly. I like the interior, but the dishes could be improved with the time.

The highlight of the meal is definitely the Sacher Torte! The torte is moist and the jam is sweet! They put the jam layer in between the torte and below the chocolate glaze. It was such a treat! The café is beautiful and located in the middle of the city. Reasonable price for its location!

(Translated by Google) Actually a very nice coffee, but lately a very unfriendly reception at the entrance of the café. Despite tables that had become vacant (not reserved!), We were not allowed to sit down and when asked, the only thing that was repeated automatically was “in an hour something is free”. Impudence. Traditional coffe in Wien which is a must-see. The prices compared to the other cafeterias in the city center are lower which is a great way to try the Sacher cake without giving 6€ for it, but still getting a great quality and taste. The total price of all the pictures was around 17€. So really nice for all that great food.

Orange juice was just squeezed on the spot, the atmosphere is spot on for a Viennese cafe, and the strudel had only one downside: it was so good it vanished too soon from its plate 🐷. Perfect spot for who’s visiting the area between the museums quarter and Secession or Belvedere.

  • 4/5 Cristina B. 2 years ago on Google
I liked the look of the place. The ham and eggs I had were delicious, the malange was sadly not that good. The Kaffee Latte on the other side was absolutely amazing and the poppy cake as well. I read in multiple previous reviews that the staff was unfriendly, I cannot confirm this. They were nice, friendly and fast 😊.

Unfriendly staffs at all! All of them! Especially the old guy, need to know how to welcome visitors or at least say some greetings!! Tried the apfelstrudel really tasted horrible. It was not fresh!! The Maria Theresia coffee was okay.

Some Viennese coffee houses are very touristic and overrated. I would say, Sperl is definitely not one of them. Both the quality of the coffee and desserts (I tried Kürbiscremesuppe and liked it), the service quality, and ambiance, of the environment are great. If you want to experience Viennese coffee culture just trying one coffee house, it must be definitely Café Sperl!

  • 3/5 Kathy V. 1 year ago on Google
The environment is such a traditional Viennese Café & incredible. I love the atmosphere 🥰. You have a pool table where you can play. We asked the poppy dessert and another traditional dessert with coffee, and it was really good (not that sweet). On the other hand, I went (perhaps) in busy hours and the waiters were in a rush so it took a while to have the check 😕. In my opinion, it has a high value or cost for a tiny cup of coffee (5 euros) 👀. Nevertheless, I recommend to visit a traditional cafeteria like that one 😊.

The best cafe that I ever visited. It’s the perfect spot to read, study or work. It’s quiet - no loud music or loud conversations/crowds. The wait was minimal. I believe most people who visit Vienna prefer Cafe Sacher or Demel, where there are long lines to enter. I highly recommend this place as an alternative to really get that Viennese coffee house experience. This place is known for their Apple strudel, which was delicious. Also, I believe the melange coffee with espresso and milk foam is a Viennese classic. As well, there was a piano performance on one night that I attended (Saturday), which was beautiful. I went multiple times to this cafe. Prices are reasonable.

Came for Wienerschnitzel, didn't leave disappointed. It was enough for 2 to share. Beautiful, classic Viennese cafe with a good ambience - a well-trained pianist played in the background while we ate. The salad was unique, but delightful, and the cranberries were some of the best I've ever had.

  • 3/5 Samuel R. 9 months ago on Google
The Portions were surprisingly small, we didn’t order any big foods, only A pancake and a apple strudel. Food tasted well. Expected a better experience though. Waiters were a little uninviting.

  • 5/5 Andy A. 11 months ago on Google
Fine old school café just outside the ring. A relaxed, homely feel, excellent strudel, and very good things beyond that. Film buffs may recognise it from Before Sunrise. In the intervening years it doesn't seem to have changed much. Sunday morning can be a bit busy.

Less touristy than most places, this coffee house has elegant decor and a calm atmosphere. The seats by the window are comfy and the best place to sit. The place has quite a large menu from coffees to weiners to sandwiches, and of course desserts. They do have a small vegetarian menu as well. *NO alternative milk options. Coffees are good. My order was an espresso, a kaffe latte, and ginger drink. As food food, the table ordered the Italian toast (Pesto, mozzarella, tomato) and the wiener snitzel that came with freshly shaved horseradish. The italian toast was a bit odd as it was a on two sandwich bread slices. Not as tasty as I expected, but I also know this is not California, so next time I'll order something different. The wait staff comes around quite often to take your order and check up on you. FYI, Cash is preferred for payment.

  • 5/5 George M. 5 months ago on Google
It might look expensive because of its appearance, but it's not. The stuff was kind, patience and helpful. The dishes were great and unique and the best coffee I've had in Vienna. I highly recommend to visit if you're you're tourist!

It's like stepping into a time capsule back into the early 1900s, no surprise a bunch of movies were shot there. The atmosphere is definitely the star of the show here. Service was slightly rude, don't expect a warm welcome (tourists stand rather confused in the entrance sort of... waiting?) but we got our order quick enough. Half of the place was reserved, so it's a popular spot peeps! Nice little history on the menu, that conveniently left out the second world war out *ahem probably because of it's regulars at the time* (jumps from 1930 to 1968)... but their delightful Apfel Strüdel sure made up for that. Recommend, it's an experience.

Good Viennese coffee and mostly friendly staff. Sadly not as good as I remembered it from previous years. The strudel was overly sweet and tangy, the cheesecake too fluffy and the coffee was average for Vienna, seems to be more tourists now than locals which doesn’t have the same sort of vibe as it used to - a very difficult thing to manage probably, but its kind of lost some of its charm for me.

Nice coffee house but coffee / cappuchino is quite waterish. Ambiance is beautiful. Small dishes are well done. You might need to book a table if you do not want to queue until outside in the street during peak hours. Worth a visit.

Their Viennese iced coffee wasn't for me but their Sacher torte was awesome!! If you're used to American cake you'll probably like it even better than the originals, as I did. Just fyi: don't plan to be in and out quickly, because the staff definitely err heavily on the European side of 'don't hassle the customer by coming around often'!

We stopped by for a light brunch. We didn't have a booking but was able to get a table for 6 without waiting. The place was fairly full at that point but fuller when we left. There were a couple of waitresses that took orders and they weren't too difficult to flag down. The interior was quite elegant with the wood and yellow walls. The wooden fireplace at the end of the dining area was also quite nice with the large mirror on top. We grabbed some drinks and some food to share. I had the chocolate cream and really enjoyed the thick chocolatey goodness. It was really rich and really tasty. I had the bacon and egg dumplings which were bacon and scrambled egg with spaetzle. It came with a side salad with potatoes which was quite nice. The beef soup was also quite flavourful. The schinkenfleckerl with ham was pasta with ham and was alright. This was one of the Vieneesa restaurants where I found the food to be seasoned well, the other places were generally a bit over salted. They did have a dessert area by the counter but we didn't end up getting any. I really liked the ambience and food here. It felt really different from home so it was an enjoyable experience.

Café Sperl is maybe the most authentic turn-of-the-century Viennese coffee house; it lives up to all the clichés of this traditional Viennese institution. With its wooden parquet floors, bentwood Thonet chairs, marble tables, crystal chandeliers, carom billiards tables, and (naturally) newspapers, this is the quintessential Fin de scècle café. You might even see Robert Menasse, the great Austrian writer and a regular at this place, sitting at one of the tables. Coffee, sweets and other food are all solid, and the atmosphere is warm and comfortable. Don’t pass up a visit to this unique and charming spot!

(Translated by Google) One of Vienna's main attractions is all the city's cafés, so-called Viennese cafés. The first cafés in Vienna were opened at the end of the 17th century. The heyday of the cafés in Vienna was around the turn of the century 1800 - 1900 when several famous authors visited the cafés and used them as their workplaces. Famous artists, scientists and politicians were also among the regulars. Wienerkafé is today an Austrian cultural institution. It is impossible to name the city's best café, but one of the best is the Viennese café Café Sperl. In 1880, a café called Café Ronacher was opened here. In the same year, the café was bought by the Sperl family and continued to operate under the name Café Sperl. In Richard Linklater's independent film "Bara en natt" (1995), there is a scene recorded at Café Sperl. The café has a small corner intended for toddlers with some toys. I ordered a Einspänner, an espresso served in a glass and topped with whipped cream and powdered sugar. My daughter got a large glass of hot chocolate with whipped cream. The bill ended at 8.80 Euro (94 kronor), somewhat expensive but incredibly good.

Just had probably the worst meal of the decade here with my wife. Indifferent, if not rude, waiters who kept evading us for service. I made a booking a month ago expecting a memorable first meal in Vienna - well I had an unbelievably bad experience. We arrived at 7 pm, no soup (both today’s special or the beef soup) available. Ordered a pot of green tea that came as a pot of hot water… struggled to get the attention of the waiter and when we did? No apology whatsoever but simply returned with a tea bag (after 10 minutes when the pot of water was no longer boiling hot). And he didn’t offer to change it! Foodwise, the “boiled” sausages (wiener wurstchen) were of canned food quality and the Wiener schnitzel was dry, slightly salty and lack of any flavour. We didn’t risk to order anything further… We didn’t wait for the bill because the waiters just kept ignoring us. We walked to the counter, (still had to wait for the same rude waiter who act as if he was busy doing something), paid and walked out laughing about how silly it was for us to have looked forward to our dinning experience in this “famous” cafe. We just finished our second half dinner (a margherita pizza with good drinks that were much more enjoyable) in another diner nearby. So be warned guys! Stay away from this cafe!
