A beautiful place to explore and learn about the heritage of a very privileged and wealthy family and what they've achieved throughout history. There are 3 ticket options, garden, house and garden and house, garden and chapel. We went for the later, which included an audio guide for the garden and a guided tour of the house and chapel. Overall the service and site were great, albeit we felt that the entry costs were a little steep. In hindsight, we'd probably only pay to see the gardens as the guided tour of the house and chapel weren't that inspiring. Yes there is a lot of history, but the artefacts and decor were somewhat underwhelming in contrast to the gardens.

We bought tickets only for the gardens and we loved it. Beautiful arranged gardens, with an enormous variety. For €1 we took an audio guide, and I can recommend that. Outside the Quinta, in front of the entrance, there's a very nice terrace for a coffee, a drink or a lunch. Don't park your car inside. It costs €12. Outside ( right side of the Quinta), there's a street where you can park for free.

What a heavenly place! Well cared garden, old mansion, some wine shops, palms, magnolias, backyard, wine yards, the view, the smell, the sound, the taste! All this made me feel peaceful, calm and happy! Definitely worth a shot!

Lovely large estate with beautiful formal gardens. We enjoyed our visit and then strolled the gardens out back. The estate is, of course very old but magnificent with beautiful wood details. As you move from room-to-room the views from the windows add to the charm. Outside, the gardens are really lovely and there are many good photo opportunities. This is definitely worth a visit.

This was a very special tour and a special estate to visit. The home has been well maintained over hundreds of years and has a wealth of beautiful antiques and art that is museum worthy. The architecture is rich and the gardens were lovely. It is a scenic drive to get to the location and well worth the trip. The carved chestnut rooms and lithographs were amazing. The Foundation has done an excellent job of preserving their heritage.

Gorgeous place with a special atmosphere. Except being depicted on the label this place has nothing to do with that fizzy rose wine. The gardens alone are worth a visit.

Great little educational stop while touring the Douro valley! The gardens we're great to walk around in, very peaceful. They offer wine tasting but you need to book that in advance.

Worth the trip, even though I didn’t know what to put in google maps (accidentally navigated to the stadium for FC Vila Real first). Parked on the side of the road; tickets easy to purchase along w a self tour audio guide. Classical gardens were beautiful. You can envision what it was like here way back when. A must see for lovers of baroque style.

Great to see where the wine my mother drank when I was a kid came from. Very scenic area with beautiful grounds.

Lovely old Portuguese estate. The buildings are well maintained and architecture is very interesting. The well manicured gardens are beautiful with an intriguing tree tunnel. The winemaking area has interesting old bottles of port and wine dating back to 1886. A highlight is the view of the house and it's reflection in the pond. There is a small shop that offers a limited assortment of drinks (coffee and beer) beside the house.

A national treasure hidden in the Douro Valley. A cultural center in northern Portugal. An architecture gem included in text books on Portuguese architecture. But most of all to me is its surrounding vineyards and veggie gardens - makes one want to stay forever.

Interesting guided tour. Nice gardens but I visited in November so they were not at their best. Lovely facade reflected in the water.

Very beautiful place where the wine Mateus is made. A gorgeous garden that you’d want to spend hours admiring. Lots of history as well if you take the full tour.

The most magical experience I’ve had in Portugal so far. I drove in my car rental from Porto, nice and easy drive. Straightforward directions from google maps. Parking was a bit confusing but there’s a side street where you can park or right across the from the gate entrance if space is available. There is a cost for a guided tour (only) of the house/chapel and self guided tour of the gardens. Very solo travel friendly! I recommend 110%!

Lovely property and informative tour. If you are interested in relics and beautiful ornate furniture, this is the place. It was very cold inside so dress accordingly.

Great garden, the guided tour is well worth the price and visit, the garden visit is without guide. The tour guide also recommended excellent place do lunch nearby.

Stunningly atmospheric house and gardens. Well worth a visit and an ideal place to escape from the bustle of main towns like Porto. Guided tours inside the house can sometimes be a little rushed and chaotic and expect lots of visitors in the holiday season.

The gardin is indeed beautiful. However it's absolutely not worth 10 euros! It took us only about 15min to finish the walk. Felt like another tourist trap. I add one star more for the pinewood corridor.

Who said all the cool things are in the city...this place has a lot of history...Heck even the President Of Portugal has stayed here...Beautiful Jardim and Casa...I took a guided tour and it was well worth it...A supporter of the the economy of Portugal since 2016

This Palace and Garden is just Marvelous! You'll enjoy your time just walking in the garden. It's really really beautiful. I hope you'll have the chance to visit this place.

Absolutely beautiful property, but the staff was a bit rude (I think they’re French…), hence the -1 star. To start, parking is difficult so plan to turn into the side street (for free) before you reach the entrance. I’d personally skip the guided tour ticket and just explore the property on your own. Bring a lunch and buy a bottle of wine, then have yourself a beautiful picnic lunch anywhere on the expansive property. The flowers, architecture and landscape are absolutely stunning. Also…the “grape ale” is a revelation! This place is worth the stop between Porto/Amarante and The Douro.

We stopped here after deciding to avoid highways on our road trip and randomly passing by, and it was a pleasant surprise! A beautiful villa and gardens. We did not do the guided tour but spent about an hour wandering around and eating cherries straight from the trees. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area/passing by.
