The cave temple is carved in a single rock which was built in between 7th and 8th century. Entry here is free. The place is situated in a 6 cent small land, but neat & beautifully maintained.

An amazing relic dating back half a millennium to the time of the Ay kings. Peaceful stands the rock temple in silent testimony to the faith of the kings who built it. Perhaps the did not have time or anticipated no long stay the place for anything more elaborate.

Nice and calm place. Its a simple park like space with a great historic monument. A temple carved in a single rock. Built in 8th century AD. Maintained so well. If they gave colour or change the information board, it will be useful to read and help a lot to understand the history and importance behind it. Now its too difficult to read.

Prior to the ASI taking control and maintaining this old temple, an eight century monument was kept buried. Many of the earliest architectural remnants can be found in this seashore community. Although this location is immaculately kept, there are sadly few signboards and no allocated parking spaces. There isn't much to see here, but if you're passing, take a peek.

It was built around 7-8 century. Carved from a single rock, and it's incomplete. Usually no one notice this place very much. Well protected historical place. No entry fee, the entry is totally free. Situated near the road side so there is no place for proper parking.

Vizhinjam Rock Cut Temple is a unique piece of 8th century history which all South Indians can be very proud of. The small site is fenced off by ASI and maintained well since 1965. Not sure many Trivandrumites might know about this 1200 year old monument next to the Vizhinjam junction. During the Ay dynasty which ruled from Pampa to Kanyakumari from early Pallava period to 10th Century. There are very few monuments left today for this period. So the small Vizhinjam Rock Cut temple is very important site to appreciate their art and architecture. The granite outcrop, part of which is destroyed by the later generations, has the relief of Lord Siva as Kirathamurthy on one side and a unfinished relief of dancing Lord Siva and Parvathi. The temple faces east and enshrines a loose sculpture of Vinadhara Dhakshinamurthi. One wonders this amazing reliefs on granite have some resemblance with 7th Century Pallava monuments of Mamallipuram. Amazing place and a must visit site.

8TH CENTURY ROCK CUT TEMPLE BELEIVED TO BE MADE UNDER THE AY KINGDOM (8 - 10 CE ) OF VIZHINJAM. (DESCENDANTS OF YADAVAS OF N.INDIA) FROM A SINGLE ROCK A SMALL ROOM IS CHISELED AND ON BOTH SIDES ARE GUARDS - TRIPURANDHAKA SIVA ( LORD SIVA HAS FOUR ARMS WITH BOW , ARROW , AXE , HAND MUDRA AND A FOOT RESTS ON A SHORT DEMON - MUYALAKA ). AND SIVA - PARVATHY UNFINISHED RELIEF ON OPPOSITE SIDE.THIS TYPE OF RELIEF IS PURELY CHOLA STYLED. IT'S A MYSTERY WHY THE RELIEF OF GUARDS ARE UNFINISHED.... INSIDE THE ROOM IS A SMALL IDOL WITH FOUR HAND , VEENADHARA DAKSHINAMOORTHY (SIVA AS MUSICIAN) . TWO ARMS ON VEENA AND TWO WITH AN AXE AND A DEER ICON. EVENTHOUGH THIS SITE WAS UNDER PROTECTION OF ASI , UNTIL 2019 THIS PREMISE WAS TOTALLY NEGLECTED BY OFFICIALS AND SAFE HAVEN FOR LOCAL DRUNKARDS... NOW WELL PROTECTED AND PAVED WITH STONE PATH AND SMALL GARDEN WITH FREE ENTRY. FROM CAPITAL CITY 20 KMS TO VIZHINJAM JN. BUS STAND IS VERY NEAR. TOWARDS THE BEACH ROAD JUST ONE MINUTE WALK AND YOU ARE THERE FREE TO ENTER. DON'T EXPECT MUCH , BUT THINK ABOUT YOU ARE IN FRONT OF A WORSHIPPED IDOL WHICH IS ABOVE THOUSAND YEAR OLD. ANOTHER DILAPEDATED AYKUDI STONE TEMPLE IS VERY NEAR TO THE BEACH. ADMIRE , AND BE PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF 21st CENTURY......

Small temple cutout of a rock. The idol is unique. The surroundings inside the temple doesn't have much flora and fauna. It is a simple and calm place. You can visit it, if you are crossing it orelse you are not missing anything if you don't.

Southern Kerala’s most beautiful natural rock formation can be found at the Vizhinjam caves in Thiruvananthapuram district. These rock-cut sculptures date all the way back to the 18th century and are located to the south of Kovalam junction. The shrine has a central cell with an independent sculpture of Dakshinamurthy and on either side of the cell are unfinished sculptures of Siva and Parvathi.

Ancient temple with very good ambience . There are some number of stone paved steps to reach the temple from vehicle parking, it will take hardly 15minutes .So reach the place before 4 pm , because it's the entry closing time.

Not easy to spot due to the crowd and shops around. The temple is closed right now due to covid regulations (updated on 27.08.21). But can take pictures outside the compound just like I did
