Wonderful park, a credit to all those who look after it. We loved the aviary - very unusual these days, plus the lake and glass house and rose garden. Don't forget to take some corn or lettuce or bird feed as there are ducks, geese and swans. There's a secret garden too, although we didn't manage to get that far. Lots of paths to walk around, and the park I'd clean and tidy. The cafe was excellent too, lovely coffee and delicious cakes and you can sit outside in the sun. Enjoy!

Decent park, me and my little boy like to wander around near the duck pond and the bird house. He particularly loves to wander through the little garden just past the bird house.

Really good park just outside Wakefield centre well maintained with good footpaths suitable for all abilities. Good number of carparking areas. The gardens look good in January sure by early spring time the gardens will be spectacular. Lots of grass areas for family picnics. Small pond with ducks and guess always popular with kid. Well worth a visit any time of the year.

Where to start. I went here with my partner and my daughter on Sunday afternoon and was blown away. There is so much to do and it is lovely to see how well maintained the facilities and grounds are. We started by going on the kiddies steam train. My girl loved it and so did my pathner and I. I could have happily spent the whole day riding round on that train. I have added some photos. After the train, we walked over the other side to the duck pond. This was also a lovely area. All of the birds were healthy and everyone was maintaining social distancing, even though the restrictions have been lifted. This was very reassuring. We walked along the side of the water and came to some trees and flowers. The selection of greenery was breathtaking and my camera got a LOT of use. A cool selection of insects too. As if that wasn't enough, we left this area and came to a tropical bird area. It had informative information about the birds. A couple of the doves were bald and this was a little upsetting but I suppose there is always a chance that they will fight and get stressed being in a cage. Despite the bald doves, I have to say that I was happy to see how large the aviary was. There was a private area in the other side where the birds could go and get shade and there was plenty of food and water and toys to keep them occupied. All in all, a lovely addition to a beautiful park After this, we walked down through the park to the kids play area. There was a skate park which was very busy and a kids park which was also packed. I can see why as there were lots of cool slides and climbing nets. It also had swings and even had a separate area for the under 6's. It was well maintained and there was an ice cream van and a food truck too. We had a lovely time. The only slight issue I had was the litter, but that is just life. Unfortunately. More bins could help with this. Also. To add. There is a putting green. The suggestion I would make would be to maybe open it in the summer evenings. I would love it if my partner and I could go for a game of golf, just for fun, on a summers evening. Anyway, to sum it up. We had an absolutely lovely time. We spent about 3 hours there and there was lots to see and do and we will be back on a regular basis.

It has many outdoor attractions. Found the animal grave yard which was cool. There's a little cafe where you can get hot food and a cuppa.

One of our favourite parks. One of the best outdoor skate parks in West Yorkshire, lots of open space to play ball games, brand new play area is getting built and the kids can wait to go on it. Duck pond with small aviary next to it.

Visited the play park area with my granddaughter. The ground area was tired and could be updated. The park on and around the paths and the grounds are very well kept. The icecream van prices are just ridiculous ! £4.45 for a cone with a flake and sprinkles, £3.75 for a solero ice lolly, needless to say none were bought!

Run down, poor parking, not very well maintained. Mostly grassy, good when dry muddy any other time. Good college from what iv heard. Only reason it got a 2 is because of the skatepark being so good. Told by police officers in the park that "its not a safe place to be alone, especially on a night and if possible to avoid at night at all. It has to be policed regularly."

Fab park with loads to do. Play area accomadates for younger and older children. We loved the secret garden and thats where we had our picnic. Kids loved it. The only downside, there is no toilets and the cafe won't let you go to theres unless you eat or drink inside whether you are a paying customer or not. She saw how desperate little girl was but because i didn't want to have a drink inside with it been a warm summers day she said no to using the toilet. That lost the 5 star for me.

Love this park with its well layer out footpaths. Just wish others shared my experience instead of leaving their litter all over the place. There are plenty of bins, yet people feel the need to pick up and bag their dog muck and just leave it on the ground.

Thornes park is a nice area to have a walk, albeit the water can smell a little. There is always an array of Greylag and Canada geese standing on the waters edge, not to mention mallards! The park is also next to Clarence park, and is just generally a really nice area to walk in. That being said, the park does get very busy, especially at weekends. Another great feature is that the park has 6 tennis courts to play on for a small fee, a golf course again for a fee and an interesting aviary of exotic birds. Worth a visit if nearby!

Big Park and having been guided in by sat nav had a bit of a trek to the lovely park swings area at the other side. All rides safe, really good condition and well looked after. A few dubious characters about due to the skate park adjacent and you need a small fortune for ice cream. Altogether a great park as the kids had a brilliant time with plenty to choose from

Good little park that includes a duck pond, children's playground, skate park, small aviary, flower garden, cafe, bowling green, putting green and small golf area. Lots of geese near the duck pond. Usually I find geese can be quite aggressive. Not in this case though.

Usually loved Thornes Park, it's a great place to spend time with the kids and take a walk. But unfortunately I am a little upset that the toilets are not open all the time. Today, after 30 minutes on the playground, we came home because my little one had to go to the toilet ... What a shame, especially since the weather is brilliant

Been coming here for years, the duck pond, the fields, the cafe, the bandstand, the bonfires and fireworks displays, the rose gardens and greenhouse, the tennis courts, the live music festivals, the sledging during winter, the kids playground (when I was a kid obviously) it really does have alot to offer.Unfortunately I didn't take many photos this visit.

It's so beautiful when the flowers are in bloom. As someone with a slight fear of geese, I can say these are some of the friendliest I've met. There is lots of space for little ones to run and a huge playground.

I usually go for the skate park and playground, the skate park can get busy and there are many experienced people there if you need any guidance but when busy not a place for very small children as the park is fast moving and comes from all directions. If you are ok with negotiating multiple skaters then it's a very fun place to be or alternatively visit off peak times. The park itself is amazing and big so you are able to practise everything you need. Concrete in construction and reasonable maintained. The playground is newly refurbished and good for all ages, big and with a large variety of equipment, a definitely worth a visit but can get really busy at peak times and summer. Car park next to parks and free, again can get busy but usually we have no problem parking. No toilet facilities or onsite shops etc but not too far from city centre. The park also has acres of grounds to walk (please be a responsible dog owner) and even a light railway. Plenty of space for ball games, cycling, walking , exercise etc. They even have music performances in the summer too. Worth a visit, thank you.

I visited here with a friend....the new park is amazing for the kids especially the little playground which has so much more to offer. The down side was the tall slides my children aged from 4 was unable to get up themselves

Playground has been upgraded and it's fantastic for children. What let's the park down is the smell of certain cigarettes wafting to the children's area from the skate park. It needs patrolling to stop it.

Lovely park, nice walk around, nice pond full of birds and a nice aviary full of birds that look very well looked after. Some interesting things to spot on the way round, including a few old pet graves, obviously from whoever actually lived in the park when it will have been somebodys garden!

  • 4/5 Stephen W. 1 year ago on Google
The rose gardens and plant areas are well maintained and a very relaxing area. The bird aviary is now looked after by a Thornes park volunteer and is a vast improvement to what it had been previously our grandchildren love watching the variety of birds within the enclosure. Well done to the friends of Thornes Park.

We like to call in and if the weather isn't so good. We sit and watch the birds. Sadly we had to witness 2 lads riding through a pool frightening the ducks and they thought it was funny. At least they went home wet through!!

Nice place to walk the dogs. Shame the park is always full of children that aren't being supervised by their parents. My child got kicked in the back at the top of the large tunnel slide today, to top it off there were children misbehaving on the end of the slide (thought it was funny to dangle down over the exit), she tried to avoid plowing onto them on the way down and fell off the end, got a pretty bad graze. No parents around so my partner told them off. 10 minutes later he was them threatened by one of there fathers, who decided to drive on the pavement next to us as we made our way home. All children involved were between 3 and 6 years old and as far as I am concerned should have been disciplined by there own parents. It's a shame free parks like this come with the type of people that couldn't care less what their children get up to and feel the need to threaten decent parents for actually watching what their children are doing at all times.

Nice skate park and also good playground too with a children's train ride too. It's a shame about all the litter and a few of the older kids were smoking around the younger children and lighting fires in the woods. If that could be sorted then this would be a really amazing park.
