Hindagala Temple is situated on the road from Peradeniya to Deltota. Few kilometers from the Galaha junction and drive through the Peradeniya campus. The entrance is at the left hand side of the road when you driving from Kandy or Peradeniya. There is two access to the temple. One is a stone steps from the main road. you can see a sign board with directions to Hindagala temple there. Other one is a road up to the hill located some meters away from the stairs. If you are visiting with your own vehicle, you can drive up to the hill some far along that road. You can also arrive there by bus very easily from Kandy or Galaha junction. Ask someone there to get the correct bus. As I remember it doesn't far more than 6-7 kilometers from Colombo-Kandy highway road. Hindagala temple is very important place in Sri Lankan history since the Hindagala temple is related to many of ancient legends and amazing wall paintings. The architecture of the Hindagala Temple is also wonderful. The vihara geya is totally built under a natural large rock. You can see many of ancient architectural technologies such as "Kataram" and wooden joints. The oldest paintings of Hindagala can be seen in the cave facing eastern side of the rock. Most of the paintings have been faded and decayed. There are two paintings depicting “Thapassu and Balluka” brothers offering alms to the Lord Buddha and another painting shows that the “Sakkra Deva” paying homage to the Buddha in Indrasala cave. The style of these paintings is treated as similar to the period of Sigiriya. In these paintings outlines have been made in brown colour and other parts have been

One of a unique temple situated in Peradeniya, temple has got two entraces . When talking about the temple, it belongs to 3 eras, one is anuradhapura, kandyan era and some 1800s paintings. Anuradhapura painting play a major role, it enhances the historical nature of the temple. This era painting can be found on the rock surface just above the roof a plaster which is badly detoriated. Kandyan era paintings can be found inside the shrine room , the horizontal panels are quite larger than other temples, the reclining buddha statue belongs to southern style , coner 2 statues are kandyan, cave is narrow and long and this temple contains the longest depiction of Màra paràjaya throughout the ceiling. Outer wall contains southern style of 19th century paintings, youll find some kandyan paintings outer wall right side from the entrance at top. More exciting thing is that there's a water cannal, water is soo pure and cold, enjoy but please don't pollute the environment, its well maintained and conserved .

Hindagala Raja Maha Viharaya is picturesquely situated on a rock close to the University Campus at Peradeniya along the Galaha Road. It has rock inscriptions dating back to the 6th century that speaks of the history of this temple. Amidst the ruined temple paintings of the 6th century are found paintings on the walls of the temple belonging to different periods of recent history. The cave shrine and monastery known as Hindagala Raja Maha Viharaya is situated in the Kandukarapahala Korale of Udapalatha Division of Kandy District. The cave shrine is situated on a hill commanding a panoramic and idyllic of the hill ranges belted the Mahaveli river valley about 1.5 kms, away from Peradeniya University turns off on Peradeniya-Galaha Road. The shrine has to be reached through a steep ascent of 50m from the ground level, through a motorable narrow pathway and a flight of steps, in an utter state of despair, with stones of uneven surface. The hill on a clear day gives a view of the Adam’s Peak, hence, being selected in ancient times as residence of meditative monks in the the pre Christian eras.

You can get there by taking the Mahakanda bus from Kandy. The temple has two entrances. The first entrance is where you've to take a walk up the road leading to the temple and take the short stairway from there. The second is where you'll have to take the stairs all the way up to the temple. The surrounding environment is very calm and there's a small stream next to the temple if you're willing to take a look.

An ancient Hindagala rock temple is situated in Galaha area which is about 2 miles away from Colombo-Kandy road thru Peradeniya campus road, this temple is around 2000 years old containing historical arts from the Kandyan era. You have to climb around 150 steps to get to the old temple which is in awesome surroundings. Very so calm and quiet and peaceful there. The oldest paintings of Hindagala can be seen in the cave facing eastern side of the rock. The caretaker shared a once secret niche where the Tooth Relic was hidden inside the “Na” tree during war. Around 1000 years old “Na” tree is still there you could see beside the main shrine. You could see the white Bo tree in monks residence area. The painting details and recumbant Buddha in the image room is so quiet and good for meditate in a peaceful environment. You must visit and feel the real temple surroundings.

Very quiet and lovely ancient rock temple within an easy drive from Kandy. The caretaker shared a once secret niche where the Tooth Relic was hidden during war. The painting details and recumbant Buddha in the image room were lovely.
