Food is uniformly salty and oily. John Dory: Oily Pig's head: floating fat in the salty soup with mint leaves. Horrible Crispy pig cheek: burned greasy pork rinds with some salad with overpowering sour salty dressing. Disappointed and unable to eat. Roasted bone marrow: with every bite, the overwhelming taste of oily engulfed my taste buds, making it impossible to savor the actual flavors of the ingredients. It's a regrettable choice. The high price at this restaurant felt unjustified and short of expectation given the poor quality of food. Wheelchair users: There are few steps to the main restaurant. No lift , no ramp . It is not wheelchair accessible restaurant! The bar area: Tables are at a strange hight. Not friendly for wheelchair users. Overall in my opinion this restaurant is far from deserving of a Michelin star. The underwhelming ambience uninspired food and disappointing service all contributed to an overall experience that falls short of expect a associated with this prestigious recognition.

White walls and white tablecloths with coat hooks covering the walls gives a relaxed atmosphere. Food of incredible quality. You can tell their chefs are proud of their ingredients. They really let each element shine through and they are served without over the top plating. The staff are also relaxed and very welcoming. There is no pretentiousness about the place, just good food and great wine. The places buzzes with chatter, because that's what good food does. It brings people together.

We arrived on a Tuesday for lunch. It was packed but we had a reservation. We started with some bread and butter and then moved on to the bone marrow with parsley salad. It was very good but beware: you’ll spill food on your clothes! Very tasty ox tongue with beetroot and horseradish. We also had the grilled lamb heart which was amazing and surprising. There was an interesting day special: greens and pig cheeks. St John has a wonderful service. The vibe is great and relaxed, many tables seemed to be having a great time. You can either visit for a serious elegant work meeting, a birthday party or just an unexpected informal lunch.

It was my third time here over several years and I wasn't disappointed. Consistency is not easy when you've been running for such a long time but somehow the St. John's crew have not only survived 2 years of pandemic but also kept the high quality standards their customers where and are used to. Ingredients and service where absolutely on point. I will single out the calf's liver, cooked to absolute perfection. Thank you

Best to make a reservation as the restaurant fills up by about 1pm, although you can still sit in the bakery area. The bone marrow is definitely something to order, and the turbot fish is really good too. The rarebit was a little heavy with the rest of the meal but it’s a good one. The pig’s tongue was something many tables ordered and worth a try too.

We had to try the famous roast bone marrow with parsley starter - I don’t normally go for bone marrow as I’m not a fan of the texture but now I’m sold! I had the skate with bread (basically croutons) and monk’s beard as my main - perfectly cooked. Absolutely had to order the welsh rarebit on the side, which was very rich indeed. I’m glad I ordered it though. I still think about those freshly baked madeleines every day. So good. The service was faultless too.

Went there with my friends and we have ordered a whole roast pig to share among all of us. The meat was so tender and delectable. Langoustine was finger-licking good. Absolutely dig the profiteroles.

Great food! Snails are a must try for starter, bone marrow was okay imo, I had tried tastier ones in Asia. We had the Ox Cheek and Saddleback for our main and loved them! Good atmosphere, got busy quickly and the gentleman waiting on us was excellent, experienced, poise and gave us enough attention.

One of the best meals I've had in London. Everything was perfectly balanced, you could taste the quality of the ingredients, nothing overpowered anything else. Relaxed atmosphere and casual environment, excellent wine list and very well made cocktails (great Manhattan). Overall we were fed and watered for a very reasonable amount. Excellent value for money for a meal of this quality. Staff were attentive and lovely. Recommended.

Good experience - we had the bone marrow (shock) and lamb which were both very rich and flavourful. Also had the fish which was cooked very well. We went for lunch and the atmosphere was good. Service was fine. The glasses we were served our water and cocktails in smelt awful and made me feel quite sick every time I took a sip. Glad we went but wouldn’t rush back.

An incredible restaurant with a nose-to-tail eating philosophy! We had lunch with the famous roasted marrow, an unexpected and exquisite flavor. The terrine was also delicious. The dishes at St John are very intense, with strong flavors. An experience worth trying. We made a video about the philosophy of this wonderful place!

This might be one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at in the world. The flavors that they are getting out of the food is just incredible. They give St John in London a run for their money as top restaurants in the city. Highly recommend sitting at the counter so that you can watch the chefs make your food, and you might even have some interesting conversation with them. If you're in London then you need to visit Manteca. You will want to at least order the bread appetizer, mussels, and one or two pastas.

Wonderful lunch, some hits and misses but generally the food is good. Since they are a bakery I’d have expected bread to be warm when they serve but it wasn’t. Sauces for salad are repeat in different dishes Must book ahead as they seem to be quite popular.

Incredible! Wonderful food wonderful service. You're missing out if you don't eat here. The bone marrow was superb, you wouldn't want to miss out on the hare either. The apricot sorbet with vodka worked much better than it sounds.

My love affair with St John continues & this is the original. Mussel salad just perfect, then a garlicky, soft as butter, lamb. I had to behave myself with the Wine list. So easy to get to Farringdon now the Elizabeth Line is open. What a way to start the weekend.

Low key Michelin starred restaurant - very affordable - and the food is incredible. They use a lot of offal, and really bring out British fayre. Really good experience - one of my favourite restaurants in London. Definitely recommend trying the Rarebit as a side if you can manage it, and save space for a desert because although simple, they're full of flavour and in some cases come straight from the bakery.

This was our second visit, if you're looking for a fussy dining experience this is not it. The service is attentive but not overbearing. The focus is all on the food and the beef pie for two was exceptional, though with sides it could easily feed three people. The rarebit is delicious so we had to order it again. My only regret is not having space for dessert as I hear these are excellent, alas, next time!

Might have chosen the wrong main… took the star off but definitely will update when I return. The eel was must to be desired, however the rest of the meal was outstanding. The bone marrow- so tasty. The tongue fab. Desserts great.

Great restaurant, bit of an institution. I’ve eaten in the restaurant and the bar area - both excellent experiences. The food is top notch, rich, tasty. Well portioned, impressively good value. The service is attentive, friendly, unassuming. Overall it’s just a really good experience here if you want a high quality meal without pretension. I look forward to my next visit.

Such a lovely discovery!!! While did not have a reservation, we were able to request a table for two and just have a glass of wine while we waited. It want much faster than expected. The food is awesome! We had the bone marrow (so tasty I forgot to photograph it). My wife had the fish (I forget which) and I had the lamb sweetbreads. The bread is phenomenal, the wine selection is eclectic and fun to explore. The staff are amazingly. What can I say…I love this place.

Slightly lost for words about my evening here. Food was absolutely outstanding, worked my way through most of the incredible white wines - there are loads served by the glass. Service was lovely and atmosphere was perfect. Especially enjoyed the pig skin with radish and roasted shallots, the blood cake, and you've got to have the Welsh Rarebit. Can't recommend this place enough, everything was excellent value for money too.

A beautiful restaurant with a rich and magnificent history. There is a lot of love and care in the food that comes out of the kitchen. Everything we had was perfect, and the atmosphere was calming yet rich, like dining with a room of old friends.

Great experience. A proper British/western cuisine with comforting flavors and fresh products. Service is professional and welcoming. A Must Try in London. Great artisanal beer and wine 🍷. Slightly pricey for the mains. 60£ each with one glass of rouge.

Absolutely great experience. They definitely are very clever in appreciation of not just the outside but the inside of the school. Must try bone marrow and parsley. Definitely get some fresh Madeleines baked. Make sure you book ASAP.

This pared back bar-bakery-restaurant is my quintessential London lunch spot. Alongside nose-to-tail dishes like roast bone marrow, dripping carrots, and crisp pig cheek with dandelion, there’s enough to keep the less carnivorous happy – I’m looking at you broad beans & Berkswell cheese and hake & leek pie. Great for supper too of course!

One of London's classic restaurants, and it didn't disappoint. Every dish was fabulous and the service was lovely. Definitely a special occasion kind of place!

Amazing experience, the food was incredible and so well thought out, not like anywhere else you can eat in London. For such a high end place, it did not have a snooty atmosphere, it wasn’t bad prices and the staff were so lovely. My husband and I started off with the bone marrow, razor clams and potted beef, all of which were incredible. We then had the crispy pork cheek, which was very rich but tasty, and kid kidneys which were divine. We then finished off with a very generous portion of treacle dessert. Paired with their house red which was delicious! I couldn’t recommend enough, probably the best meal I have ever had!

From the unique atmosphere to the rich earthy food, there is only one place like St. JOHN. I wish it had more vegetable options but it’s heaven for meat lovers. The beef pie was an absolute dream. The madeleines are like a Parisian guilty pleasure. And the place has this kind of old school sophisticated minimalism that’s missing from modern London spots.

Hands down, my favorite restaurant in London and my kind of starred restaurant too: 1) The food: the best ingredients, beautifully cooked, simply plated, generous portions, you will be left speechless as the flavors built in your mouth 2) The vibe: easy going, absolutely informal and with a welcoming eat well & feel good ambiance 3) The crew: the most knowledgeable front-house staff on top of seasonal specials, cooking methods and recommendations 4) The bloody mary: a 10/10 spicy, with fresh horseradish and no silly frou-frou-frou garnishes. The things that dreams (of good tables) are made of.

I had high expectations and somehow they were exceeded. I think about the bone-marrow and sardines daily - they were incredible. The weakest part of the dish was the Welsh rarebit - I found it flat. Despite the lamb being very good, I felt something was missing. However, the Ox heart and chicory was delicious and opened me to how good heart can be when cooked very well. If you are going to get any desert - get the blood orange cake. I don’t like sugary things - but it was the best cake I have ever had. Perfect balance of sweet and tart.

Service is great! The beef tongue tastes good. The veg in the steak dish is good. The eel is too salty, can’t really taste the original taste from the fish itself. Over all it’s ok, not amazing to how much it costs.

First time at St john and very impressed. Love the industrial styling of the dining room and the general appearance of the place. Wait staff really friendly and helpful. We took out own wine so can't comment on it but list was extensive and looked good. Food very nice... highlights for us were the faggots, the mutton, rarebit, and bone marrow. Liver was a bit overcooked and the tripe wasn't very nice but that didn't really matter. Make sure you save room for dessert!! Madelines excellent as was the pavlova. Highly recommended for an unusual informal take on michelin dining. Will return.

My Eldest son took me here for Fathers day meal and from the moment we stepped in it was fabulous, staff very attentive, food brilliant and beer I had the Redemption Solar pale Ale, we stayed for ages. We Had my son dog Peggy so could only sit in the covered courtyard where the bar and bakery are but it was great.

Great place to try some traditional British food. Everything from the starters to desserts was executed perfectly. Interior is basic and minimalistic, but comfortable. Service was excellent. Wine list was a little bit too French oriented in my opinion, could use some wines from other countries.

Birthday lunch at St John’s today was par excellence! All the dishes were perfectly presented and expertly cooked . The Welsh rarebit was and bone marrow were finger licking good. The bread pudding and pavlova with berry compote was heaven .

Brilliant meal. Every dish tasted fresh and was prepared perfectly. Do not forget to also order the Welsh Rarebit side dish, which absolutely shines. The environment here is best described as “smart casual” - with no air of pretentiousness, just good food and conversation. Highly recommended.

Very interesting and special restaurant which offers nose-to-tail dining. I love cuisine with special parts meat, but it is so hard to find in London. This is the place I would regularly visit. I've ordered mostly from the specials board - pork, bone marrow, beef liver and heart. All perfectly cooked in French style. The bread and desserts were also great, including the famous eton mess! All the staff were very friendly and gave us good recommendations. My two young kids also loved the food and the environment.

A perfect meal. Elevated, comforting flavours using great produce treated with care and not overfussed. The brill special of the day was exceptional as well as the date loaf with butterscotch sauce. Staff were helpful and friendly and the vibe of the restaurant is welcoming and tasteful. Highly recommend.

Great no-frills food. This restaurant cooks pretty straightforward cuisine exceptionally well. The service is great. The wines are fantastic. This isn't your Michelin starred tasting menus with ridiculously fancy flourishes on everything; just brilliant food ordered a la carte.

  • 5/5 Daniel L. 1 year ago on Google
Proper good food from start to finish. We started with the venison and mackerel, our friends had the house classic bone marrow on toast. Then we shared the mega meat pie, hake, with sides of potatoes and greens, and Welsh rarebit. Phenomenal. Super friendly servers and a very non-fussy interior. Would highly recommend.

It was amazing lunch in St. John Smithfield. We ordered smocked eel as a starter to share, sweetbread and turbot as our main courses. Everything was delicious. And we enjoyed being in restaurant, very spacious, light and elegant but comfortable at the same time. Staff was very attentive and professional. Highly recommended
