We have been visited to many state parks in east coast and this is the best place or one of the best state parks that I have ever been visited. There are bunch of breath taking views and places around this area. Especially, I love mountain biking here. The mountain biking trail has nice marking system and easy to follow the direction. I liked the "bear bottom" trail which is very challenging and fun for mountain biking, and it is marked as black diamond which is the hardest trail to bike. Amazingly, we saw a turtle on the bike trail. Moreover, there are many kinds and type of flowers around this area. I would totally recommend anyone who loves nature to visit here. You're gonna love it here.

This park was beautiful, quiet, clean and had amazing views with great hikes. The trails vary in level depending on what you are looking for. There are spaces to hike, bird watch or sit by the water. There are great bathrooms for public use. RV and tent camping, though the tent sites are not drive up sites. Fire wood is available to buy. You are nestled near the Shenandoah Mountains and could easily drive a little down the road to hike some famous trails or view some scenic outposts.

We visited 2 sections: the canoe launch area (with picnic tables and pavillions), and the overlook. The picnic area has several tables, the metal grills if you want to BBQ, and an indoor area with multi-stall men's & women's bathrooms. There's also a stepped access point to walk down to the river's edge, which was nice. (It should be noted that there are signs up warning you about food storage due to potential for bears) The overlook is what it sounds like, and it absolutely delivers an incredible view (my pics don't begin to do it justice--and we were there RIGHT at sunset. Gorgeous). Both areas give you a beautiful view of the river. We plan to return VERY soon.

I really like the physical park but my visitor experience on weekends has gotten worse over the years. So much noise pollution from the many radios blasting music near the picnic tables/parking areas. Last weekend there was an added noise pollution treat- someone playing a bongo drum so loud that no matter how far down the trail I got I could still hear it- so much for bird watching. Visitors string personal hammocks on and across the trees everywhere in that area of the park; it’s basically a makeshift encampment. It all just seems like counterproductive behavior in a place with this mission statement: Virginia State Park’s mission is to conserve natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the Commonwealth of Virginia and to provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with good stewardship of these lands, water and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations.

Beautiful park no matter what time of the year you come. Be careful when in the picnic area after a rainstorm passes through. The ground becomes very slick if there is no mulch or leaves on the ground. The visitors center is very nice. The overlook provided some spectacular views of the Shenandoah Mountains, Shenandoah River and the valley. Lots of hiking trails to go on as well.

Updated as of Oct 2020: The RV campground is clean and is a great place to camp, for a weekend or for a week. There are plenty of trails to hike and in the warmer months you can float down the river. The scenery is great and the park sits right at one of the 180 degree bends of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. We have been here a number of times in our RV and we have enjoyed being here every time. We usually come here in the Spring and Fall, but this is one of the few state parks that are open to camping all year. Summer is very hot and the campground has little shade, so we usually avoid coming here in the heat of the summer. As of 2020, staying in the RV campground costs $40 per night. There is a yurt and several small cabins in the RV campground, but they cost more. All sites can be reserved through the Reserve America website or app. All RV sites have water and electric (50 amp, 30 amp, and 20 amp connections). There is no sewer connection at the campsites but there is a dump station at the entrance to the campground. The bathhouse is clean and the showers are hot. Cell service is good here through a nearby tower that has T-mobile (new here as of 2020), Sprint, and AT&T. I don't have any experience here with Verizon, but as of early 2020 when I last talked to someone with Verizon, their service was very spotty here. It may have changed since then.

Beautiful park. It has few places where river can be accessed. Camp sites are spreaded across so that each gets privacy. We did yurt camping. Yurt was spacious and had river access few yards away. Only one drawback about camping sites is cars can not be taken to camp sites. They have to be parked in the parking area and all the stuff needs to be carried in to wagon which gets tiresome sometimes. They have a nice picnic area right along the river access for day campers. Rest rooms and showers were pretty clean.

First time here, and I liked it. Went tent camping in early March, so cold nights. There were few other campers. There was no car traffic at all. There was the gentle white noise of the water flowing over the rapids. The tent sites have a good distance between them. Most are within site of the river. The main bath house was warm and clean. The vault toilet did the job, but if you need to sit down you might want to bring something to clean the seat. There were bags of wood for sale for $6 - self server. The park overall seemed well kept. There are plenty of hiking trails, picnicking areas, fishing spots, and a place to put in canoes. The trails had various degrees of difficulty for the average person. Hard core hikers might want to look elsewhere. This place looks popular, so if you go in the warmer months you will probably need to make your reservations early.

This is a nice little park that we visited a few years ago. We were able to do the Virginia Canopy Tours zipline, but that might be closed now. We only spent the day to do the zip and hike to Wildcat Ledge. We parked in the Right River Campground parking lot, which has restrooms right there. The first part of the trail through the campsites is very easy and can be followed by anyone. The Wildcat Ledge Trail was definitely not easy and is a lot more rugged. I swear some of it seemed straight up and down. However, the view from the top was totally worth it. Fortunately, they have benches along the way for those of us who need to take breaks. I recommend the hike to the top only for those who are in good shape with strong mobility.

We love this campground! Its best off season since the trees are not shade height yet. The campground is open with water and electric all year. The sites are large and private. Easy river access for tubing and kayaks. Nice trails.

Situated along the picturesque banks of its namesake, the Shenandoah River State Park has over 1,600 acres of recreation for the whole family! My boys and I parked at Culler's Overlook and were immediately welcomed by an incredible view to the west. We hopped on the easy 0.5 mile Overlook Trail to the visitor's center and then the moderate 0.5 mile Hemlock Hollow Trail down to the canoe launch parking area. The parking area at the end of Hemlock Hollow is expansive and has quite a few tables for a picnic. The canoe launch is about 100 yards from a 15 minute pickup and drop off zone. Was disappointed to see some people couldn't walk their trash to one of the many trash cans, instead opting to leave garbage on their tables. This park has a LOT to offer, and we were only able to scratch the surface during our visit! Can't wait to make it back and see the rest of its sites.

Perfect little camping cabin with power, ceiling fan, 2 bunk beds with mattresses, fire pit, grill, 2 parking spots, nearby bath house with toilets sinks, shower, and laundry. The porch has 2 comfortable rocking chairs as well. Great for some alone time or the whole family (pets included).

I went to this park in the fall season and it was the best decision. The water is so clear and the views are beautiful. The people who like fishing, this is the best spot for fishing. Also the people who don't like mosquitoes must keep mosquitoes spray. The cabins look cozy and worth staying.

Great cabin stay. Many River access points. Local grocery store sells rafts so you can use at the park. Just as good as paying for the tour I think.

Enjoyed a beautiful fall day here. Only wished we could've found seating close to the water to dine on our lunch. Tailgating in the parking lot worked for us instead. We visited during the week, so there weren't many people which was nice. Most people we saw were masked and maintaining safe distances. Pleased to find that the bathrooms were very clean.

I love this park. From the campsite to the employees. I haven't been over to the RV site. The sites for tent camping are some of the most picturesque I've ever had the pleasure. My husband and I were basically surrounded by wild flowers, and our site was bordered by the river. The employees were extremely knowledgable and friendly. They have zip lining, and tons of trails. I wish we could go every year! The sites are reserved pretty far in advance, so keep that in mind.

This is a great place. Visited and did some fishing with my wife. Plenty of parking and clean restrooms. You can tell the staff at this park really care. I was walking to the visitors center and couldn't help but notice the gentleman that was painstakingly cleaning and making the small stream in front look like it was going to be featured in a magazine. All of our wonderful state parks are great to visit but this one has a bit of perfection running thru it!

Beautiful location and great cabins in very peaceful setting. If you enjoy running hills, this is the place for you! There isn't a designated place for swimming but there's tubing, canoeing, and kayaking. Our teens are also trying ziplining, which is located right inside the park. There are also caverns to explore in the surrounding areas. Front Royal is a nice town about 15 minutes away with plenty of restaurants and grocery stores.

$10 entry fee and well worth it, we were there for picnic but this park has a lot to offer, beautiful views of the Shenandoah River, camp site, fishing, swimming kayaking/canoeing, lot to do and worth coming back. I don’t know if this is a regular issue in summer but Beware of Bees, get something to smoke them out if you aren’t barbecuing, they gave us a hard time.

One of the most beautiful parks in Virginia. For almost all seasons thia park offers the visitors a lot of activities. The picnic areas next to the river are very inviting. The walk trails have different levels of incline to suit your choice of difficulty. There are a million amazingly beautiful picture frames that one can try to capture the beauty spread all around and still will need more. The pristine views of the river, trees touching the clouds, flowers that are wild and beautiful, trails that seem to be going for ever and more.. The overlook offers an amazing view of the river below. I have visited here many weekends and clicked a few hundred pictures. Walked the trails and enjoyed the fresh air. This park is truly a Gem

Nice big camp spots, ours was shaded. Lots of room between spots as well. Many hiking trails in the area as well as launches in the area. The launch at the park itself was tough, though. Just stairs. Bath house was nice, the shower was adequate.

We camped in one of the RV pads. We’re from Florida and this was one of our stops heading to Maine. This was absolutely the best state park we have ever camped in across the country. The pads were very spacious and spread out and the bathrooms and showers were clean. We didn’t explore much of the park but we did go to the overlook and went to the river from the camp loop. We saw many deer, rabbits, and a black cat that must’ve lived somewhere in the campsite. If I lived in VA, I would definitely come back and try out one of the yurts and cabins!

Very nice state park. Thoroughly enjoyed the trail along the river and Culler overlook. First time staying in a camping cabin. Comfortable and clean. I wish the peak vents could be blocked to keep heat in during winter months.

We stopped in at the park just for a quick drive thru. We were happily foiled by the parks beauty and weekday serenity...so we stayed longer than first planned. The welcome center was great.. We purchased a couple sweatshirts (it was cool) emblazoned with the parks logo. Then hiked a ways on "Hemlock Hollow trail. A fairly mild walking trail.. The river was (is) very tranquil in this glorious fall spectacle with all the colors from the changing leaves. At times, if the wind would gust just ever so slightly, the forest would "rain" gorgeous leaves down upon us. WOW !!! The picnic area is littered with numerous tables. Bathrooms and showers were available. We stopped at the RV campground where we met the most congenial host who was very patient in answering our questions. He also, told us about the rental cabins nearby in the park. We drove over there on some very highly maintained asphalt roads and, "holy cow"... nice, is the word that comes to mind. Various sizes for a couple or a couple of families. This is a wonderful place. 5 star in my estimation Congrats and thanks.

A great campsite and place to take the family. The bathrooms are the cleanest I've seen in Virginia. It's great and very close to the National Park

  • 5/5 Olivia T. 3 years ago on Google
Hiking in the state park was absolutely beautiful! People get caught up in state vs national parks and they shouldn't because state parks are equally fantastic. The trail that follows the river was more of a fire road than a trail but was one of my favorites. We camped here as well. The sites were spacious and had enough plant life between them to make them feel private. This might just be my favorite state park I have ever been to.

This place is a pleasant surprise! Great campground, big spots, bit pricey for just water and electric, great location. We paid $40/night for W/E. No bars on Verizon, Full bars AT&T. If you go in your rv, make sure you downshift going down the 15% grade between the entrance and campground loop.

Awesome camp site! It has primitive sites, RV sites, cabins and even a yurt. Despite the unexpected snow, our experience was amazing! We slept inside our Tesla Model Y as I let the car charge overnight. Took a quick hike the next morning and view of the Shenandoah river was very relaxing. Definitely coming back!

  • 3/5 scott c. 3 years ago on Google
This a hard one to rate. The park is pristine, paths were a bit muddy in places, but we have had a lot of rain slot, staff super friendly and all wore masks. The problem is the hum that comes from the water treatment plant, it is consistent and penetrating.

  • 5/5 Sonja 3 years ago on Google
We love this park! Make sure you hit the Cottonwood Trail and Cullers Overlook..... two of the easiest and coolest spots here. All the trails we've done have been good. Wildcat Ledge holds special memories as I had shallow pockets that day and lost 20 dollars!

Fantastic campsites and stunning views. Not much more to say! Make a point to detour to any marked scenic views, totally worth it. Also, campsite 5 is probably the best for size and location, being right on the river. Other sites are fine, but may be a little less private. Since sites are walk-in they provide carts to lug your gear, though it's a short walk to all but the farthest sites.

We were going to Shanondoah Skyline Drive during the weekend in fall but the traffic was so heavy that we changed our mind and went to Shanondoah River State Park. The park is clean, with great trail system. Great for a dog. I did an 8 mile loop, starting at the visitor center, culler trl to campground trl, walk through campground to river trl, to culler trl, connecting back to rover trl, to bluebell, to hemlock trl and back to the visitor center. Even on a rainy day, it was still enjoyable. Trails are clay, mud. Trails we're primarily flat, but hiking boots for the mud are necessary. The visitor center is really nice. The town it's in is super cute. Be sure to visit main street afterwards. I could spend a whole weekend there and have tons to do in that area.

Very helpful ranger made my visit a delight. The building is really cool, inside and out. The landscaped water feature was neat to see outside and even cooler to look at from the large observation window just to the right as you enter. Covered picnic area off the left side has a great view of the river. There are a few exhibits inside that are worth looking over, especially the taxidermied animals.

Spent three nights in the RV campground here. Park is really nice with an abundance of hiking, all of which is really well blazed and not terribly strenuous. Some great views to be found along the way. The river is the real attraction here with plenty of rafting and wading opportunities. All dog friendly, which is always a plus for me.

This park was very beautiful! Lots of hiking trails to choose from! One of the cutest little visitor centers that I have seen. A few breathtaking over looks, and it seems to be very well maintained and cared for. This is a very pretty spot to stop and have lunch as you're driving through or enjoy hiking for the day.

The RV campground is well maintained and large enough to fit three 2-person tents and a canopy comfortably. There is also a shower room and bathroom nearby. Water and power at each RV camp site.

Beautiful state park overall! Campground was really nice with quiet, private sites that were each very well maintained. Dogs welcome, clean secure bathhouse, laundry facilities, hiking trails along the Shenandoah River, etc. Park also geographically located in good area - very close proximity to Skyline Drive, 8 miles from city of Front Royal and maybe 12-15 miles from Luray…so plenty of things to see and do!

Great place to enjoy nature at its best. The overlook in the park offers awesome views. The park has RV campgrounds and cabins too. Wood is available at the visitors centre for $7/bundle.

Beautiful river, not too deep. You can easily wade near the shore, but water shoes make it easier because there are lots of sharp rocks. There are lots of picnic areas and they have bathrooms. Tubing is not so easy because it is not deep enough and lots of sharp rocks, but a raft or canoe would be fun.

Ran along the river and looped up to Cullers overlook. Great view. I stayed in Camping cabin #41 and it was more than accommodating. I ended up bringing a pair of heaters and was able to keep the cabin comfortable. The park was quiet not too many campers in early December. I definitely look forward to coming back to explore more.
