Planet Word is different kind of museum - a voice-activated museum in the jungle of museums in Washington DC. A museum about the word and languages through the interactive exhibits, where people of all ages can enjoy and have fun. I saw lots of kids having more fun than adults. When you enter the museum building, you see a beautiful “Speaking Willow” tree. You hear the murmur in many languages when you pass under the branches of this tree. When we entered the museum, we were asked to wear the mask at the front desk and to start from third floor and work our way down. The masks are still mandatory inside the museum is little too much. And yes, they make sure you wear the mask. It is very interesting to know the whole process of how we learn to speak our first language. You learn lots of unique things about the world languages and how English language has picked up the words from different languages. You can paint with the virtual brush and change the atmosphere in the room. We also used the teleprompter and delivered the famous speech. I saw many kids trying to sing on karaoke. We need to get the timed entry ticket online, although it is free (with some donation if you are interested). How you are getting attention with some words and the advertisers use them to sell their products was interesting to learn. Must visit attraction in Washington DC.

This place is so cool. I took my teenage Godson and he had a blast. There are a ton of interactive stations throughout the museum as well as a recording studio for people of any age to test their public speaking skills… for just fun of course. I highly recommend this activity for all ages. Proof of identification and vaccination are required along with masks. You may visit online to reserve free tickets.

Museum is free with optional donation. The building is stunning in Victorian brick and tile. They’ve done an admirable job with a somewhat vague premise. As I moved through the impressive exhibits, I began to wonder if this museum is a tax shelter for the wealthy as well as an educational experience. Lots of money was poured into the tech driven galleries. People seemed engaged and awed by the interactivity and bright lights. Each area touched briefly on a topic that could support a lifetime of research. Hence the sense that something was missing.

Well put together, spaced out, fun and educational! staff are friendly and helpful. There aren’t many exhibits, but the ones there are very interactive and 2 hours will fly by as you explore. Only thing I’ll say is it was a bit warm inside.

Absolutely worth a visit. So interesting! Three levels of interactive exhibits to play with. Reservations and three hours to visit recommended. The cost of the museum is free but don’t be shy to donate to help keep it functioning! Staff are lovely. Lots of parking options nearby and collocated with a good restaurant called Immigrant Food. Makes for a really fun afternoon and it’s a nice change from the usual. Perfect for a rainy day as it is all inside. Enjoy!

Amazing! It was interactive, fun, and informative! Also free. It won’t take you long to go through it but it does have a lot going on. I went here with my 3 and 6 years old nieces and they loved it. There’s an included photo booth so you can get plenty cute pics. I don’t wanna spoil it all for you but it deserves a shot.

If you have kids or just love books and language you must visit. Beautiful building fantastic interactive exhibits. Really thoughtful content. Don't miss the little short story generator choose a genre and it will print a 'receipt' with a short story to take home. Beautiful gifts in the shop too. 8/22 timed entry booked in advance or at the door online.

5/5! Planet Word is a must go too in DC. The museum is free and has tons of cool and fun activities that you interact with. The museum was highly recommended by a friend, so I had to give this place a visit on my day off. Aesthetically, the museum is beautiful, with modern displays and cool interactive activities you can play with. From the beginning of the tour, you are brought into a room with a world globe that helps you learn about different languages around the world, there's a fun library of sorts that have classic reads, a singing karaoke room and more! All the puzzles and games were very fun and I'd highly recommend you give this place a visit. You'll have to book your time slots online, but this museum is completely free! Highly recommend visiting this exhibit. 5/5!

A great family experience - especially families of readers. It is interactive. Even little ones will find the colors and exhibits visually interesting. Individuals may have less fun since many of the experiences are more fun with a friend. Eat at Immigrant Food if you have time

Start with the kiosk that gives you CVS-receipt-like papers of stories or poems. You can't try just one. Then walk in to the friendliest, most helpful people, take the book-lined elevator up to 3 and you're in this magical world. (Really, take the elevator! It's so cool.) There are so many wonderful, interactive things to learn and do here. We were there with big field trips, and the kids and adults, alike, were having a blast. And wait til you get to the library, where you might want to move in. At the end of all the fun, there's a small bit fantastic gift shop with mugs that make this grammarian's heart happy. Highly recommend (and remember to book your timed entry ticket)!

First trip to Planet Word, but it won't be our last! We spent two hours, and there was still more to see and do. From children to grandparents, everyone found much to enjoy and to learn about language. I highly recommend! (If I spoke other languages, I'd recommend in those as well.) Free admission, but donations accepted.

This was our family's favorite experience in DC! The interactive exhibits are marvelous, informative, and engaging. Charles and Talya were kind, helpful, and enthusiastic about the museum and life. They made us feel valued and welcome. Definitely a must see! It's a free museum, yet we gladly made a donation for its work.

Cute little museum hidden inside the Franklin School, across from Franklin Park. FREE (but you can choose to donate), nice online ticket reservation system, and cute layouts and designs with modern technology interactive exhibits (mostly all are computer based) for younger generations. There are 3 floors with 1-2 core exhibit rooms per floor (with a few smaller rooms with smaller items). I am not one for doing computer interactive exhibits, so this was a 25 minute stop for me, but I could see lots of other families really spending time in each room and probably spent 2-hours here. My favorite room was the small library with little dioramas built into the walls, very fun. The concept and education value for the young is great, both embracing our world of many many languages, as well as reinforcing how important words are and how they can be used to persuade and influence. Overall it is a great addition to DC.

We were part of a group of individuals with disabilities that traveled to Planet Word. This interactive museum allows word and language levers to really be immersed and take part in activities. We really enjoyed our time learning and partaking in things like public speaking exhibit, origin of words, and poetry plus other fun things. I would recommend this to parents, couples and just about anyone interested in learning a little bit more about language, books, authors etc. Although this building is very old as you can tell from one of the later pictures are posted, the building itself is fully accessible. It has elevators and ramps to all levels open to the public. I wish more renovators of old buildings would come and study how the managed to make this building so accessible. All of the bathrooms are accessible.

Absolutely LOVE this museum - it’s so much fun!! Love how they make all the exhibition super interactive. For example, learning about languages through karaoke, having people around the world to teach visitors their own language. I learned so much in this museum while having a lot of fun! Definitely one of the best museums in the DC area!!! Highly recommended!

Not your typical museum — super interactive & automated (think voice-activated type) exhibits. Overall it was a pretty interesting, cool, and engaging experience although most of it was focused on very basic language facts. Just seemed it didn’t go deep at all into the history or study of “language”, and you can tell that the aesthetic is the number one priority. Good for kids and adults but I’d imagine that someone like an experienced writer, for example, would quickly become bored. I’d suggest going with at least another person just because some of the activities/exhibits are made for two. Reservations are recommended; walk-ins are welcome but aren’t admitted once capacity is reached. NOTE masks are still required for all as of July 2022.

This was so much more fun than expected!!!! It was really informative, thought provoking, and inclusive. One of the most interactive museums I've been to and appropriate for all ages. Adults and kids alike will find things to interest them.

This museum was so fun and really interesting. Pretty much every exhibit was interactive. There's a large exhibit teaching you about different languages, a feature about comedy, a karaoke room, and an interactive show with a light up word wall. Highly recommend to anyone in the DC area. I spent about 2-2.5 hours there and could have stayed much longer. Recommend going with a friend because there's one exhibit that requires 2 people for the activity.

Such an incredible museum. Our teen boys even enjoyed it. We could easily have spent 2 hours here if we weren't in such a hurry. Some favorite parts were the karaoke, the origin of language room, and the library room. Definitely go see this!

Ever dreamt of a dictionary-amusement park hybrid? Enter Planet Word! Set in the majestic Franklin School, this voice-activated haven is where words come alive and play. From pun-packed playgrounds for kiddos to nostalgic nods for adults, it's a linguist's Disneyland. Whether you're decoding emoji mysteries or debating the Oxford comma, this place has you covered. General admission is free, with a suggested $15 donation to support programming.

One of the best, most educative, interactive museums I have gone to! Learned a lot about the different aspects of a language (primarily English, although they have many interactive exhibits on other languages as well). There is also a somewhat interactive show “word” that’s very well done! Highly recommended.

"Free" admission (free but donation requested). Wonderfully conceived with unique interactive exhibits for all ages, hidden nook behind a bookshelf, learned a lot about language and how we process it. Could spend hours checking everything out. Nice independent restaurant on the ground floor. We did have to wait about 20 minutes for the next admission time, but we browsed the gift shop while we were waiting. Fun items there, including Wordle board game.

Cute museum. It was free. I'm not sure I'd pay more than $10 for it, but I liked it. Had a karaoke room where you can sing. Also a free photo booth. Very interactive which I love. Things to do like create your own advertisement, play trivia with headphones, and coloring. We lucked out with parking out front.

Just awesome!! You can tell kuch had gone into making this an amazing experience. Everything is interactive. Much to learn and explore. Must visit in DC!! Solve puzzles at Lexicon Lane at this museum. requires reservation -$20 per game but well worth it. There is the immigrant cafe in the same building ( which we did not visit) vs having to look elsewhere for food.

We loved our time here! We ate at the Immigrant Cafe before and also had a wonderful experience. We had my parents and my kids (toddler elementary and middle schooler) and we all had a very enjoyable day! The word wall and the library room were my favorites. I also enjoyed listening to the karaoke by others and the game room made for good people watching. Highly recommend!!

Very neat place for anyone interested in words, language, and writing. I would describe this place as an array of exhibits more than a museum. There are 3 floors with a few exhibits each, all of which are interactive to different levels. If you'd prefer to not interact to experience the place, you won't get as much out of it. Some of the exhibits are completely driven by visitors engaging and interacting. As a solo visitor passing through for a quick visit, I skipped these entirely. Fortunately, it is free if charge to visit and they do accept donations if you'd like to support it's operations. Overall definitely worth at least a quick visit to see their unique exhibits!

A majestic experience of all that involve words. Language, sounds, lights and ofcourse melody. Take a group of friend and stroll down to Planet Word, there will be something for everyone. From leaving languages across the globe to poetry and book reading to digital painting, telling jokes and my favorite karaoke and a picture booth. Though the song selections are limited there is variety enough to enjoy. As the literary types used by the artiste is explain prior to the song's start.

One of THE best museums in DC! They truly make the museum experience engaging, interesting, and interactive. From touch screens to incredible animations, games, and even karaoke, there's fun things to do for everyone while explaining the history of words, languages, and their importance. I especially enjoyed the library where books came to life! Plan to spend at least an hour here, and while they take walk-ins, it's easier to reserve a free ticket online!

My girlfriend and I had a fatastic time at this interactive museum. Has a modern, clean, high-tech feel. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The word wall exhibit alone is worth the visit. Thought provoking and informative with the newest technology. Outstanding and well thought out displays. Great for dates, family outings or field trips.

This museum was simply amazing and so fun. We reserved our tickets online and was so easy to check in upon arrival. So many different interactive engaging activities, rooms and 3 floors of knowledge. Will definitely recommend for families. Perfect for our Sunday Funday Activity.

Fantastic place that feels more like a pop up event than a museum. Every exhibit is interactive and in a fun, educational way, rather than gimmicky. Our whole family enjoyed most exhibits immensely especially the reading room. Very neat uses of technology.

We were dining and were drawn to the "sculpture" across the street. We had no idea that it was a museum. My husband and I both have a love of words. The experience was so much fun. The hands-on activities built community engagement with other museum goers. A great way to spend a couple of hours.
