The overall appearance of this museum is amazing! So clean, staff is courteous, the exhibits look terrific. The only downside is some of the information. I know this isn't supposed to be a 300 level history course, but some of the facts were more whitewashed than truth. Calling a slave an "indentured servant"? Not mentioning much of the racism and other acts (trail of tears, wounded knee), it seemed like it wanted to ignore the truth. I get not being too graphic, but at least mention it. Good for young kids I guess.

This was my favorite museum I've seen so far of the Smithsonian Museums in DC. Expect to spend 2 1/2-4 hours here. Note: The Museum is free but parking is EXTREMELY limited since it is near the National Mall and next door to the Museum of Natural History (I recommend visiting both of these in the same day if you can). There is no parking garage and while there is street parking, it is VERY, VERY limited and it is only allowed for 2 hours (not enough time to see everything). Use public transportation if possible. Ok- so we visited 6/2022 and the famous Wizard of Oz Ruby Red slippers are not currently on display BUT THERE IS SO MUCH ELSE TO SEE. The ACTUAL Flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star Spangled Banner" is on display. The actual hat President Lincoln wore to the Ford's Theater the night he was assassinated was on display. The Presidential Ladies Fashion exhibit was my favorite- it is a 100+ year tradition for a First Lady to donate one of her gowns to the Smithsonian Museum. The American Red Cross Ambulance was really neat. The actual counter and chairs from Woolworth's Diner from the Greensboro Civil Rights Sit-In is on display. The Currency exhibit is exceptional. It was fun to see Julia Child's Kitchen. The Transportation Through the Ages exhibit has a lot of amazing vehicles of all kinds, and plenty of trains for my "Sheldon-like" train-loving husband. There are lots of interactive exhibits for kids and teens. I highly recommend this museum.

Haven’t been here in years. So glad to be back. Found a wonderful underground parking lot about 15 min walk away. Sunday afternoon, quite, clean and super polite staff and security. Love the Star Trek suite and Muhammad Ali robe, as well as Rocky’s robe. Although the cafe is a bit expensive we did expect that. Lots of fun and always happy it’s free.

This museum is simply wonderful, what we couldn't tear our eyes away from for a long time is the ships, this museum is very informative about American history. The introduction of new technologies trains, ships, bicycles and much more. The museum itself is very clean, the staff is good, it is spacious, and the most important thing is that you get to know the history of ancient America, you dive into the past and discover something interesting and new for yourself. I don't really like museums, but I was delighted by this one, and I liked it. My kids were also happy and couldn't be contained. I recommend it to everyone, even with small children, it will be interesting and fun for everyone)

Incredible museum that features nearly all facets that encompasses American history. There is so much to see and explore that you can’t even do it all in a single day. This museum includes the history of mechanical devises, food culture, transportation history, pop culture, presidential history, and so much more. This museum really has it all. Since it is owned by the Smithsonian, admission is at no charge! It is very clean, accessible, well maintained, and certainly informative and educational for people of all ages. This is a museum that everyone should experience in their lifetime and I would fully recommend going here.

This place is more for growing kids then younger ones. Definitely glad we did make the visit but ours were a bit to young. When you walk in you get airport or bank vibes so definitely not the same as the other Smithsonians. We did love the trains and cars, and the Dolby section was also very eye catching.

A must visit while in town. They are constantly reinventing and refreshing the displays. There is a lot to learn here and hopefully our great country and its history isn’t destroyed by a certain cult leader and his uneducated followers (who are really the ones that need to visit here and learn something).

This museum had pretty fun things to see, but my kids walked through it very quickly.. It doesn't have very many interactive exhibits, and they only last so long looking only. We loved seeing Lincoln's hat, although it is very faded. Sadly the ruby slippers have lost their luster as well. I loved seeing part of the Berlin wall. The transportation part was very cool as well.

Lots to see and experience here. 3 levels of exhibits. We had only one short day in DC and chose this museum. I'm happy that the museums are opening back up. Everyone is required to wear a mask upon entry and go thru a security check point. Best part, it's free. You can always make a donation, especially if you choose to take a paper map. It was fun reminiscing over objects from the past that I once owned being showcased in a museum now. I most liked the original American flag exhibit that inspired the star spangle banner and a small exhibit that included the 70's Coca-Cola commercial. Some parts of the museum was closed for future developing exhibits. The theater was closed, and only the Jazz Cafe was opened for food. Tho there are food vendor trucks parked right outside the entrance on the street. I couldn't resist a huge pretzel myself. There are adequate bathrooms and lockers for use. Some parts of the museum blasted air conditioning where I wish I had a jacket. The whole family can enjoy something here.

This museum is one of the greatest Smithsonian museums! It has some of the most historical artifacts such as the Greensboro 4 Woolworth counter and so much more. But, we didn't get to see Lincoln's top hat, some parts were under construction but I still loved the museum. Remember you need plenty of time for there is much to see and read.

If I had to pick between the Natural History museum and the American History museum I would pick the American History museum! So much beauty there. Being able to see Lincoln’s hat, The HUGE flag, a great variety of the 1st ladies inauguration dresses, the White House plates, technology through the years, innovations, war history. The list could go on and on! It was all so amazing! The kids loved the interactive area where they could stand in front of the screen and the screen would dress them and then dancing and stuff moves on the screen. We didn’t do the VR things as we didn’t want to spend money for 6 kids. My kids all said they loved the American History museum over the Natural History Museum.

The incredible care that goes into maintaining artifacts from our history is incredible. It was amazing seeing the rich history of our nation, while taking time to see where we’ve really come from. This is not a place to go if you only have “a few minutes”. I made the mistake of only spending 1.5 hours the first time I visited the museum…. This last time, I spent over 4 and could still have spent more time.

Having just moved to the area I have really wanted to check out all the Smithsonian museums. This is the second one I did and I loved every minute of my time here. I got there right after opening and stayed till 3:45 and still didn't get to do everything the museum had. If you really like to take your time reading though everything plan on spending a full day here or you're going to have to either skip areas or rush through them. Now as for the areas In the museum themselves, they are great. Lots of well preserved items from all across the history of the USA. Personally my favorite was getting to see the old Philadelphia on the top floor. It's well preserved and super cool to see. The only negative thing I would say is that sometimes where to start in an exhibit isn't clearly marked so I went backwards through a couple of them. Which isn't a big deal but I wish entrances were better marked. I didn't have a map and that might help but other than that I loved the museum and would definitely like to come back and have more time to go through the exhibits.

I am always amazed with the many museums that constitute the Smithsonian. The American Museum of American history does not disappoint. In my mind, I tend to believe I am familiar with American history and realize how little I know when I arrive at this museum.

The National Museum of American History: Kenneth E. Behring Center collects, preserves, and displays the heritage of the United States in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific, and military history. Among the items on display is the original Star-Spangled Banner. The museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution and located on the National Mall at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. The museum opened in 1964 as the Museum of History and Technology. It was one of the last structures designed by the renowned architectural firm McKim Mead & White. In 1980, the museum was renamed the National Museum of American History to represent its mission of the collection, care, study, and interpretation of objects that reflect the experience of the American people. In May 2012, John Gray became the new director. He retired from the post in May 2018 and was succeeded by Anthea M. Hartig who was previously chief executive of the California Historical Society.

I had a great time at the Smithsonian. As a foreigner, even I had a good time touring there and I really recommend it. My favorite attraction there would be the original American Flag. That was incredible. The flag is the size of a house and it looks amazing! Not only that but the military exhibit is also above and beyond!

It’s good to be able to return to the Smithsonian museums! This one is not our favorite one because it was very vanilla about “one American Nation”, not very informative nor interesting. Still we had a good time there with the kids for 2 or 3 hours.

Galleries included early and modern displays: Modes of Transportation-Food-Inventions-Military-Government- Really cool to see these objects up close to get a real sense of the times....(Went during the week--was moderately busy) ***Smithsonian Museum of American History*** Great artifacts and displays.... I thought there would be more of a variety ( in the fossil section) and more ancient artifacts.....although it was a Sunday and VERY busy....couldn't spend much time viewing each artifact on display. Try going during the week so you have more space to take your time while viewing ***Smithsonian museum of Natural History***

This place should be called The Museum of American Everything. A super eclectic collection of what makes America special - from the Star Spangled Banner, to Judy Garland’s ruby red slippers. Be aware that many exhibitions are currently closed for renovation - so if you’re going for anything in particular, do check their website first. Unexpected highlights for me were the transportation exhibits, as well as the Presidential and First Lady sections.

Free museum. Lots of interesting history, baseball, war, food, ruby red slippers, currency, etc. If you love history, you’ll be here at least half the day. I enjoyed this museum quite a bit. Second time visiting, first time was 10+ years ago. 3 floors of history. Easy access from the metro. Short walk to museum from metro.

This is a must see location when you are visiting DC. Plan lots of time and wear comfortable shoes because there is more than you can see in several days. I love the architecture of the original castle. Unfortunately only a small portion of this building is open to the public. Visit during the off season. The lines can be long in the summer.

It's free and very impressive. The cafeteria downstairs is very good and clean. It was impressive as well. The salad bar is charged by weight. Considering the fact the place is free, the over charged food is well worth it. It's a big place and you can easily spend a whole day there. No parking just walk there as it's a great walk.

Our trip to Smithsonian museum was planned at the last minute. We're glad that we visited this museum despite the fact that I felt things could have been better organized in terms of layout. Yet, each section was so informational and the displays made the museum feel like a treasure house. The rich history of American and some international components have been preserved and showcased to the point where you cannot believe what your eyes are witnessing. For another piece of fact that the entry is free, this facility is an absolute outstanding attractions that each visitor should take advantage of. Learning even a single new thing is great.

Many of the exhibits are closed which is a bummer. The exhibits that are open are great. Get an early timed entry pass because they close early and it is not a close like those inside can continue to look but rather you are able to leave on the hour. We only saw about half of the open exhibits which worked out for us as the kids were done but if you really want to take your time and see everything you will want to go early.

Interesting opportunity to revisit nostalgic items and events in American history. As of March 2022, the museum is only open part of the week so you have to plan your trips to coordinate with the days the museums are open. There is a lot people but the open concept of the museum makes it feel less crowded. Start in the basement and work your way up to the top floors.

This is truly an amazing place. If you can I would recommend a whole day here, so you can take it all in. From collections of currency, to the dresses of the First Ladies. From modern and influential celebrities to the faces of yesteryear. Important documents that make up America with information we shall never forget. For sure make this one of your stops in Washington DC.

I have never seen so many artifacts that took my breath away. There are so many items that were iconic to me in my life. Mr. Rogers actual sweater and shoes???? Oscar the Grouch?? Ruby slippers? Amazing dress from Crazy Rich Asians. The fake mosquito in rock that they used to create dinosaurs in Jurassic Park ( or at least the prop.) The new entertainment now exhibit is phenomenal. I loved it. I could have spent 3 hours there easily. They had rooms with videos about American experience. We loved the one about comedy combating racial stereotypes. The videos about family and love were so fun. Babe Ruth signed baseball. R2D2 and 3CPO. John Phillip Sousa's baton. It was amazing. I went in August and this exhibit was closed. The other exhibits were interesting but this one stole my heart. Heads up. It gets busy around noon. The earlier you can go the better. And start with this exhibit.

This is a fabulous museum. It is located right on the mall in Washington DC. Masking and other coved protocols were complied with. The Metro is nearby and there is adequate parking in the area. Although many of the activities geared specifically to children are closed, we visited last Monday with my 5 year old and 2 year old grandchildren, who had a great time. We visited the transportation exhibit and the food exhibit. It took us about 3 hours to visit both exhibits. The museum is well worth a visit, even if you are not into history.

This place is a must see for anyone to get a get a picture of American history. The inventions exhibit gives a well rounded picture of achievements and how they connect to the world. The representation of the culture of diversity and America gives us a lot to think about. The museum itself has a lot of accessibility features which is necessary for anyone who has limited mobility. I use a walker and I struggled because the museum is very large and covers a lot of ground. They do have loaner wheelchairs. When you enter the museum be prepared for security to look through your bags and wand you down with a metal detector. There was a very large crowd throughout the day and at times it was difficult to see the displays because of the crowding. There are also some exhibits that are closed. Although there is a cafeteria on the lower floor and a cafe on the first floor, the cafeteria is temporarily closed. That was disappointing. The cafe was not very good. It had a limited menu and they were super expensive. The soup that I got was not hot. It was tepid at best. The three gift ships were open but I think the main floor gift shop is the best way to go. The second floor gift shop was very small and mainly had tshirts and hats. Based on the reviews I was surprised at how nice the gift shop was. There were many complaints that the gift shop was small and surprisingly disappointing but I didn’t find that to be true. The big take away…give yourself time to visit this museum. It is really large and takes a while to get through. Be sure to visit the inventions exhibit and the exhibit where they had a rebuilt house with the history of the five families who lived there. That is on the second floor. If you have limited mobility take advantage of the complimentary wheel chair, I really struggled.

Many exhibits demonstrating the many facets of American life as do other museums in Washington, D.C. This Smithsonian Museum displays many creative displays of culture of the past up to the present day.

I loved it, it was a great experience. The t-shirts only go up to 2X. And the gift shop doesn't have that much stuff as you think it would. If you're trying to decide on a museum this is a good one if you can't get a ticket to the other places. Because there's so many different things. So someone will have something they like in that museum.

This was an amazing experience and we truly loved examining where we came from and what makes us unique. There were exhibits on the Fist Ladies, American Techknowledgies, American culture, and Indigenous Peoples of the American continent. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable when you had questions. Be prepared to spend at least 4-5 hours when you visit. It’s also very close to the White House and Washington Monument.

The National Museum of American History is one of my top five museums to visit in DC. There is a ton of history here with four floors of exhibitions. The American Presidency, Military History, and Virtual Reality exhibitions are my favorite. I recommend allocating at least four hours or more to fully explore the museum. There is large cafeteria with different cuisines, small cafe, and gift shop located here. I’ll definitely be back again soon.

This museum is jam-packed with history and memorabilia. It's truly a fascinating museum to visit. There are interactive stations and areas for the kids to play and be involved. We dont have kids, but it stood out just how inclusive the museum was set up for all who visit. To explore this museum fully, you will need more than an hour. You could easily spend a morning exploring, learning, and taking photos.

Couldn't leave D.C. without visiting this museum. It was our last stop when we were in the National Mall. After visiting majority of the places in the National Mall, I almost skip this museum because the line was out the door to the sidewalks. However, the line move fairly quick. When you get inside the door, there is security check. First time seeing this at a museum. Almost felt like I was at the airport. They do a quick check of your bag, but nothing too serious. It was pretty quick. There are a few floors and each floor is dedicated to different exhibits. Jewels, artifacts, sea-life, etc. You have to be patient to see certain exhibits. It was a bit crowded inside with many tourists in D.C. Regardless, this museum should definitely in the top of your D.C. list.

This is one of the more “fun” museums, especially for kids, with its pop culture displays and areas on technology, inventions, and presidents. Getting to see the Star Spangled Banner is especially meaningful and they’ve done a lovely job displaying it. It would be more enjoyable though if some of the guards weren’t so hyper-vigilant. Nothing annoys me more than guards that purposefully follow us around just because we have children, and offer completely unnecessary warnings about not touching rails around exhibits or pointing at exhibits because “an alarm might go off,” despite the fact that we weren’t doing anything wrong and our hands were well outside of exhibits. It’s quite the turn off when you’re trying to spend an enjoyable and educational day out with your kids to feel like you’re being watched and followed and my children were afraid to go near anything after that for fear of being scolded.

(Translated by Google) There are many things that represent America. The museum is large, the exhibits are fascinating and discoverable every time, and it seems that each visit is a different exhibit. Here are some of the exhibits. ❮ Photo 1. ❯ This is "Sesame Street," which has been broadcast for a long time on the Japanese TV station NHK. Unfortunately, not all the exhibits in the photo were from Sesame Street. It was only a SESAME STREET sign and a sweater with a cookie monster pattern. The description of the exhibit stated that the sweater was worn by Bart. ❮ Photo 2 ❯ The bicycle is fixed. It is hidden by tires, but there are stairs. You can see the light blue board that secures the railing and the bicycle to the wall. I remembered Joe riding a bicycle in "Little Women" on Sunday night when house food was provided. The wheels are also interesting. It is a trick art bicycle. ❮ Photo 3.4 ❯ There are many birds on the lawn in the Smithsonian area. I thought I was eating crackers, but I was just poking around. I think both birds and people should eat decent food for themselves. ❮ Photo 5 ❯ There were several types, but this was a light bulb, a photo board of Dorothy's ruby shoes. Dorothy's ruby shoes are on display for those used in musicals. I searched for it, but couldn't find it. I couldn't hear the location of the exhibit because there was no staff. ❮ Photo 6 ❯ McDonald's sign. Is it an exhibit that foreigners prefer to Americans? I thought. ❮ Photo 7 ❯ McDonald's near the station next to Union Station on the north side of Norma district. There was also Wendy's nearby. If you look closely, Photo 6 is in Japanese. It's an honor. It's been a year in Corona, but you can now watch videos of famous museums, stations, towns, etc. all over the world on YouTube. When you watch the video, you will find things that you remember or did not notice. Next time, I'm motivated to watch it. Personal travel seems to be popular, but the explanation by a proper guide is not only about safety, but also about the current situation, worries, and cultural characteristics of the country. It will be a very meaningful time and experience that you cannot get by just wandering around. I think the lack of guides will be a problem in the future travel boom. Be aware that cheap tours can be a dangerous guide as well as a waste of time and money. I think that it is more efficient and fulfilling to participate in one such as an optional tour. In that case, it depends on the tour, but I think it's a good idea to take a leisurely stroll around the area on the first day, join the tour on the second day, and ask the guide. It seems that popular exhibits vary by country, ethnicity, and religion. People who have been to overseas museums may have thought that the exhibits explained in the guided tour differ from country to country. The tour guide taught me. Half of it is closed and the rest of the exhibits were unimpressive. The part my wife liked the best was the first ladies inaugural gowns. We completed it in under 2 hours mainly because we left each hall after being bored by what we saw.

A decent museum that's tries to pack a lot into a little room. Some exhibits can definitely be organized a bit better (girlhood) and others can be expounded more upon (slavery). Interesting views for sure, and worth a look at none the less.

The Star Spangled Banner and the First Ladies exhibits made up for what I felt was a somewhat 'meh' experience. The exhibits are thematically weak, and they did not flow well. The level of detail is shallow, so you get a taste of the story but not the meal you expect.

A very cool experience and learned a lot about US history. Awesome and fun interactive exhibits that adults and kids can be a part of. Really enjoyed the transportation history exhibits, Julia Childs kitchen, the Ruby Slippers from Wizard of Oz, and how baseball has shaped our country. Another top exhibit was the seeing all of the first lady dresses. Definitely check this museum out. Overall a great museum for everyone. It will touch on many different categories and experiences.

This was such a wonderful experience. There is so much to see and interact with. There was a line out the door but it moved quickly, thankfully. This place definitely brings a sense of wonder and imagination. The human origin exhibit was definitely my favorite, it was so amazing to see evolution up close like that. There were plenty of places to sit if you need to take a break. Bathrooms aren't hard to find. And they have a few cafés. Water is allowed inside and there are places to refill your water as well, near the restrooms. Parking was quite difficult to figure out. I'd definitely recommend planning a route to that Parking garage before you show up so you aren't driving in circles around busy DC.

If you go to DC and do not visit this museum you are crazy. One of the best structured of the museums with fantastic and whimsical displays. They also have exhibits that get to the heart and (some) horror of our American experience. The "Star-Spangled Banner" flag is worth the visit right there. It is very moving. You can easily send 2-3 hours in the museum but even if you only have 1 hour it is worth the time.

  • 5/5 Daniel G. 2 years ago on Google
We visited with our 14 year old son and loved the place. Truly impressive and very large. We were saddened we didn't have enough time to see everything. President and First Wives as well as the American War exhibits on the 3rd floor were top notch. Highly recommended.

Honestly to me was one of the lease interesting museums i’ve been in, but that doesn’t mean you wouldn’t like it!! A lot of people visit this museum and like it. But to me there was absolutely nothing interesting. It could be just me LOl

  • 4/5 Casey M. 2 years ago on Google
Fabulous museum with wonderful historical artifacts. We saw Dorothy's Ruby slippers and a suit worn by George Washington. I do wish the inside was newer and more inviting. We visited right after seeing the Natural History museum next door and this one seemed dark and depressing in comparison. Needs some renovations. Still a cool collection of artifacts!

  • 4/5 John St. P. 2 years ago on Google
Amazing and there are so many unique and rare pieces here. With that said, though, this museum felt a little disorganized, and it felt like a lot of exhibits had missing pieces. There also seemed to be a lot of empty space that could have been better used with additional artifacts or exhibits.

  • 3/5 Manuel G. 2 years ago on Google
A lot to read but rather less to see. Exhibitions about the first Ladys, something about food, transportation and America at war. Famous brands, some music instruments and a baseball exhibition. Sounds much better than it is.

Great museum for learning about American history and culture. However, if you are wanting to see the batmobile from the TV show, it's no longer there. The trains are a great exhibit for kids. Lots to see!

Do you have time? You need two weeks to watch and try everything. I am not American, but President Lincoln is my role model. I was deeply touched seeing his hat, and remembering his tragic death.

  • 5/5 Laura H. 1 year ago on Google
Loads of fantastic exhibits! Make sure to catch the numismatics (coins) display and the Star Spangled Banner. The special exhibits here are top notch and well worth checking out. Yes, even the ones that might not seem like they're interesting. One of my favorites this visit was "Within These Walls" which traced the history of a house and the families it sheltered for more than 200 years. The actual house is in the museum. You might just look at your own home a little differently after getting to know this one. FWIW the cafeteria has some super good buttermilk battered chicken fingers.

  • 5/5 Brittany R. 1 year ago on Google
This is probably one of my favorite museums. This is the home of Dorothy's Ruby Slippers, all of the gowns of every first Lady for inauguration, and an exhibit for Julia Child's kitchen to name a few. This is one of the larger museums and there are some "hidden gems" in this museum. Some may pass it by because it's American History and probably think it's only military things, but you are in for a treat with this one. It has so many things to offer from how old different tvs and cameras were to items from our favorite singers, boxers, and actresses. It's great to take your kids to show them what came before them and how people used to dress, the evolution of technology, and so much more. Definitely give it a visit if you get chance. I'd recommend seeing this museum first because there is so much to see and take in, that it will take some time to explore.

Disappointing compared to the Aerospace museum. It was super crowded, the curation of the exhibits was super strange and hard to follow and there wasn’t that much original material or exhibits. The best things were the First Ladies gown collection. I would pass on everything else.

  • 5/5 Aleece D. 1 year ago on Google
It is big. Be prepared to walk a lot. Well done displays. Some items rotate in and out as well as some areas in the process of revision. Unfortunately, the music section was under construction. That was disappointing, but I still took 4.5 hours to get through what was open.

This is my favorite of the Museums on the National Mall. Home to *the* Star-Spangled Banner, inspiration for the National Anthem as it flew over Fort McHenry. The new pop culture exhibit has some fantastic artifacts on display. The Cost Of Freedom exhibit is the most interesting to me and could spend hours in that corner of the museum alone with stories and artifacts from the Revolutionary War all the way to the War on Terror.

We're open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free and no tickets are required. The collections include the Star-Spangled Banner, First Ladies gowns, a Samuel Morse telegraph, locomotives, tools, Dorothy's Ruby Slippers, an Alexander Graham Bell telephone, flags, American-made quilts, Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves, Duke Ellington's sheet music and presidential artifacts.

The Smithsonian Museums are all fantastic, but we enjoyed this one in particular. Great exhibitions, very creative and informative. A must-see for all Americans and people visiting DC.

  • 5/5 Michael P. 10 months ago on Google
Incredibly interesting museum with a large number of very detailed exhibits. I could have spent several days inside but only hit the highlights on this trip. Entry is free like all the Smithsonian’s and at least when we were there on a Monday, it wasn’t incredibly busy. The Hollywood/Entertainment wing was really cool to check out. Ruby slippers, Mr. Roger’s sweater and a number of other cool artifacts were all on display.

  • 5/5 Jeff H. 9 months ago on Google
Checked out the new Entertainment exhibit hall. Very comprehensive and thought-provoking. The approach of connecting the history of American movies, TV, music and sports with broader questions about the evolution of our country and society is brilliant and impactful. Yes, checkout Dorothy's ruby slippers and Archie's & Edith's living room chairs, but also step into the "What's Your Anthem" music exhibit and compilation of TV Comedy throughout the years. The entire museum could take a full day to explore completely and it's worth it!

  • 5/5 Eric P. 9 months ago on Google
It’s difficult to encapsulate the entirety of the American experience in 3 floors of a museum, but the Smithsonian does a beautiful job of giving the visitor slices of our history. The new exhibit on pop culture was amazing and felt interactive. We particularly enjoyed the Star Wars, Muppet and video game portions. We also had fun cruising through the other exhibits, especially the Julia Childs kitchen, and the history of personal computing (the first mouse looks weird!) Of course, the coolest part is that these are all free. Some require times passes, but nothing costs a dime.

  • 5/5 Paul L. 1 year ago on Google
One of the “Big Three” Smithsonian museums. What a fantastic collection of American history. Plan to spend at very minimum a half day in this museum. There are of course so many exhibits to see that will delight both young and old. I do suggest eating before going because the cafeteria is very expensive for non-special typical cafeteria food.

  • 5/5 Trevor J. 9 months ago on Google
You can definitely spend more than a few hours in this museum and I’m excited to see the new additions to the museum after the construction. Enjoyed all the exhibits and if you get a chance check out the planetarium. It did give us all a bit of a headache but the graphics is phenomenal. Worth visiting this museum.

  • 5/5 Andrew G. 9 months ago on Google
An outstanding museum, with an eclectic mixture of everything that makes America. Interesting artefacts from many eras, and sure to have something to please everyone. The museum is well laid out, with two good (and one great) restaurants, with food available for all tastes! We had need of the use of a wheelchair, and found everything accessible, and access was easy to all areas, which is good. We have visited the Smithsonian Museum of American History many times over the years, and recent renovations and improvements have given it an interesting new lease of life, with exhibits being changed and moved around. I would happily go back again, if the Atlantic wasn’t so wet, and so far (visiting from the UK)

  • 5/5 Rebecca C. 9 months ago on Google
So many cool artifacts and exhibits. The Entertainment section was my favorite. Best things overall: Lincoln's top hat, George Washington's uniform, Mr. Roger's sweater, first ladies dresses, the Ruby Slippers.

  • 5/5 J L. 9 months ago on Google
We spent a lovely morning at the museum. Wonderful exhibits. Saw Mr Rogers sweater, Dorothy's shoes, the first lady gown collection and so much more! Almost a little too much noise for my preference (lots of loud talking and musical exhibits). Even with the weekend crowds, didn't feel packed.

Hands down one of the coolest museums I’ve ever been to !! 😍 And it’s ✨FREE✨! I went here when I was in DC for a concert. I was so amazed by the animal displays. They look so realistic!!! It’s so cool. I bought some cute rings in one of their gift shops too. I highly recommend visiting here ! 😊 Take a friend, take the family, take a date, or go alone 🥰

Must do! Plan on spending a good part of your day here. You can spend hours reading everything . Because it’s very interactive I found it to be interesting and fun at the same time. I believe it’s great for all age groups. I didn’t go super early, 11:30 am I had no wait at all. I was expecting the museum to be packed for August .

  • 5/5 Ash 8 months ago on Google
I went here for the first time ever on August 20th with my mom. Both of us were in such amazement with the artifacts and exhibits. Two of my favorite exhibits were the entertainment and military ones. This is such a fun museum and I hope to be back in the future. Thank you D.C. for a wonderful weekend.

  • 4/5 Nathan R. 8 months ago on Google
The museum has a wide arrange of artifacts from throughout American history. Items are presented well and there is plenty of space. I did find the museum difficult to navigate as there was limited signage and large empty and dark hallways contributed to a “lost in a closed office complex” feeling. However, the amount of artifacts make this a great place to stop for anyone interested in American history.

  • 5/5 A C. 7 months ago on Google
Wonderful and informative museum filled with every aspect of American history. View trains and automobiles from the past or key figures from American films, to old technology and gadgets that evoke nostalgia. Another museum that you can spend hours in easily. Highly recommended for the family and solo visitors alike. There's something for everyone.

  • 5/5 Kevin H. 7 months ago on Google
You could easily spend a day here if you wanted to take it ALL in. Very nicely done and covers much (if not ALL) of what has made America. It was very informative, interesting and fun. Great for a family and free admission. Close to the metro station (Smithsonian Stop).

  • 4/5 Samer T. 6 months ago on Google
It was interesting and informative. Three floors make sure you have enough time, A lot of of displays and objects In each section about the historical era. I liked the First Lady dresses they where beautifully displayed.

  • 3/5 Chloe T. 6 months ago on Google
It's an interesting museum but not really my thing. I will say if you like American history and pop culture you will probably love this, though. 3 floors with lots to see. Enjoyed the transportation exhibits and some vintage political items. Don't care too much for pop culture so was less enthralled by the heavy focus on it.

  • 4/5 Arnav A. 6 months ago on Google
For a free museum, it's pretty decent. But for a famed Smithsonian institution, it was a let down. The exhibits aren't that great except for the original Star Spangled Banner flag (no pictures of it are allowed). I'd recommend visiting if you're in Washington DC, but you likely won't spend much time here.

  • 5/5 Mikel A Walker S. 6 months ago on Google
We had a great time and the museum. My wife and I made a date of it and went to the National Museum of American History. It is amazing that I have been living in the DMV all of my life that I haven't been to the museum more often. However, I totally recommend going to visit the museums as much as you can, especially living in the DMV. We had a great time. Parking is really expensive but we had a wonderful lunch date.

This is by far my favorite Smithsonian! This is a must check out if in the area. I would plan a minimum of 4hrs to check out this huge 3 story place. They have some really amazing pieces you will only see here. Also, it's free to enter. Just make sure to reserve tickets online which will make things go faster at the entrance.

  • 5/5 Jeremiah R. 5 months ago on Google
This is an amazing museum to visit. I truly believe there is something for all ages and taste. We had a wonderful time. Spent about 4 hours there and still feel like we have more to see. Highly recommend a visit.

Great place to better understand American history. The museum is divided into sections like Food and cooking history, War History, Arts and entertainment, etc., which makes the visit easier to assimilate. The museum itself is huge, even a day isn't enough to visit all the sections. There are guided tours at 11 am and 1pm.

This is a must see when in Washington DC, whether or not you’re a fan of history. The Julia Childs kitchen was a special exhibit that we enjoyed. We recommend at least 2-3 hours here. They also have kid friendly exhibit ranging from babies to big kids. The entrance is free too

Hello! So, I recently checked out the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, and let me tell you, it was absolutely mind-blowing! The museum is like a treasure trove of American awesomeness. 🇺🇸💪 From the Star-Spangled Banner to the original Kermit the Frog, there's so much to see and learn about our nation's history. And you know what's really cool? They've got interactive exhibits where you can actually touch and experience history firsthand. It's like stepping back in time! ⏳✨ Plus, they've got some seriously iconic artifacts, like Dorothy's ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz. It's like being in a movie! 🌈👠 So, my friend, if you're ever in Washington, make sure to swing by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. It's a blast and a perfect spot for some serious historical fun! Enjoy! 😎🎉
