Due to all the great reviews I decided to send my mom to this rehab after her pedestrian crash. I whole heartedly regret sending her here. It was by far the worst experience we have ever had. The doctors were horrible and definitely medically neglected her. The nurses are so rude and don’t even want to help the patient go to the bathroom. My mom had 13 staples in the back of her head that were supposed to be removed the second day she arrived. Every day the doctor would go in her room saying they’d remove them. Her staples were not removed until the day before she left the rehab center!!! She stayed a total of 16 days which means the staples were left in an extra two weeks. The inside of the rehab center is also so ghetto looking and none of its workers made you feel like you were leaving a loved one in good hands. My mom was practically caring for herself. One night the person that delivers food left her dinner tray on the far side of her room. My mom can’t walk and she called for a nurse to bring her tray closer to the bed so she can eat. No one ever came so she was left HUNGRY all night. Another day my mom called for her nurse to help her go to the bathroom. She waited over an hour and no one came. She unfortunately couldn’t hold it any longer and soiled her pants. She was fed up with waiting and tried getting up to go to the bathroom on her own so she didn’t have to sit in her soiled clothes and almost fell while trying to do so since she couldn’t walk. If it weren’t for her telling me about this situation the staff members would’ve never even known that this happened. The caring and well-being of the patients here are most definitely jeopardized and I whole heartedly would never recommend this place if you truly love the person that needs rehab. You’re better off taking care of them at home. STAY AWAY

Unfortunately, I did not have a great experience while in the care of this facility at all. The nurses and technicians are very rude and ghetto. My first full day and weekend there was a total NIGHTMARE and the technician that was assigned to my room whose name was Natasha R. was totally incompetent and rude. As a younger patient there, the staff seems to gaslight you and show favoritism towards the older patients, as they tend to not be able to defend themselves due to them being elderly and frail. There were only a few good nurses and technicians that I encountered but that was it, the worst place to recover in post surgery or a medical crisis. The food service folks were the nicest people and if you talk to them they will accommodate your meals based on your diet and special dietary needs. Last but not least, the nurse that was assigned to my room (Room #220) on 04/02/2022 on the morning/AM shift was completely HORRIBLE, WITH NO COMPASSION, VERY RUDE. She made the gentleman from the discharge ambulance services group wait an additional (45) minutes or so due to her refusing to listen to me and not having me ready to go by 10AM that day. It was completely UNORGANIZED, none of my medications were ready and I had to end up driving myself to my local pharmacy to pick them up, just about (2) weeks after having a major surgery. I was still taking a lot of medication for pain management, heavily medicated. I could have seriously injured myself and others on the road by being in that type of condition. The occupational therapists were all nice but didn’t seem that experienced and novices. The physical therapist (Jack) that was assigned to me didn’t seem that experienced as well. He tended to be preoccupied with his cell phone, laptop, or what all of the other physical therapists were doing with their patients. I give one star versus a (0) star for this rating due to the doctor that made sure that I had all of my medications placed in as soon as I was discharged home, Dr. Risvo. He is a very good young doctor and really cares for the patients during their stay at this CHAOTIC facility. He even called my mom to ensure that I had all of my prescriptions and everything, as soon as I was discharged from this disorganized facility.

My journey began in April of 1986 during their Inaugural year. It was a preemie, one of it's kind facility then and it has fulfilled and exceeded their theoretical conceptualization! It is not only a state of the art medical center offering both in patient and outpatient treatment options. NRH's courageous and dedicated medical teams' are forever evolving new protocols and leading edge treatment options which are exceptional! Embracing innovative new treatments and mastering in the traditional hands on grit of hard work; only enhances positive patients outcomes. The Washington, DC facility is a model facility where any patient can reach their goal and soar!!

The nurses, the therapists, and staff were outstanding. I was admitted from GU hospital last August, and I’m so grateful I was was sent here. Apparently I wasn’t even supposed to be accepted because at the time I couldn’t even speak, swallow or had any type of mobility. Mann, the therapists worked my butt off, sweat and tears I tell you! I Thank God they did, because had they had babied me and let me stay in in bed, I wouldn’t have recovered so quickly. The nurses too, so encouraging, and by most of them being women, they treated me like their own daughter. I’d cry to them sometimes sofrustrated with the hand I got dealt but they were there for me and would even cry with me. Shout out to the kitchen staff because the food was bomb! Idk about all the talk about hospital food being bad, but NRH had me biting my lip it was soo good. I felt like royalty having them take my food order everyday. The midnight snack tuna sandwiches and Graham crackers hit the spot too! Shout out to nurse Annemarie, Julia, Marie, fallogot, Patricia, Denise, Joy, everyone else whose name I can’t remember, thank you ladies for taking care of me! Shout out to my therapist Jeniffer Vance- for making my days fun with the baking and games, Alison Cuneo- I didn’t know my capabilities and you pushed me to the bone, Lauren russel- for helping me drop it low again lol, sierra- my speech therapist- thank you for making my Brain work hard again. Thank you all so much for encouraging me and helping me recover. I know this is long but I feel like hospital staff don’t get the credit or recognition they deserve. You have to really love what you do in that field, and I could tell by how much they helped me that the people who work there genuinely care for others. Thank you NRH!

The doctors and physical therapists here are knowledgeable and passionate. I'd recommend them to anyone. The nursing and scheduling process can be a bit confusing. At a recent visit, I was told someone would give me an appointment, and I waited half an hour. I submitted a complaint, and the nurse coordinator promptly called me to apologize and get more information. So I appreciated that.

The therapist I was assigned to were very hardworking people. I really appreciate all their efforts and support I am very grateful for their services. It has been a positive experience. I would like to take this opportunity to spotlight Ms. Edith. She is an Awesome therapist and very in tune with her therapy and patients. I also had an opportunity to meet Ms. Therese the office Assistant at the front desk. She is such an amazing person and professional individual. If all my visits to any center is as good as MedStar NRH Irving Street. I would be very satisfied.

I had two very cordial, professional therapist. Briana made a great assessment addressing my balance concerns. She set 4 goals for me. I achieved 3 goals 100% and the 4th goal 80%. Her assistant, Edith gave me a good suggestion to join a Senior Wellness Center to continue what was accomplished during physical therapy. The check-in process was professional and with excellent customer service. Appointments were timely. The facility was well maintained. The sanitizing of the equipment being used was done after the use of each individual. I would highly recommend MedStar National Rehabilitation to others.

Been to many PT facilities. MedStar rehab at Irving was the best experience thus far: large facility, many options for doing PT, amazing and personable staff, best customer service, great communications and expectation setting. The best part was 1-on-1 attention with super capable & knowledgeable staff. The overall PT tremendously helped me heal and strengthen sport injuries.

If I could give this facility a zero I would. I was here for 2 weeks after major back surgery. The physical therapists were qualified but that is the extent of any satisfactory service I received. We had to fight to get a half-way decent bed-this was major back surgery after all. My room was extremely dirty-not sure about all rooms-but the bathroom was disgusting. The nurses were mostly traveling but they were better at least than my arrogant young, female doctor I had. Would list her last name if I could remember but her first name was Laura. I would avoid this place like the plague. Just hoping you do t puck that up here. So gross.

I've only had 5 experiences with therapy in 4 different places, 2 experiences with the National Rehab Hospital were outstanding. The therapists are very knowledgeable and give you one to one therapy, they don't leave you doing reps and not come back promptly. I definitely and highly recommend and have recommended to one individual that did go to the National Rehab Hospital and was satisfied. I'm sure there are many other places to get therapy but National Rehab Hospital is right up there with the best if not the best.

The Psychology Department has the most unhelpful personnel I have ever interacted with. After being incorrectly transferred to their department while trying to schedule an appointment, instead of being a helpful professional & advising that the operator incorrectly transferred my call Ms. Wise (Or Wide or something of that nature) proceeded to challenge me about us receiving services from NRH. Not only have we received both in patient & out patient therapy, my grandmother was admitted to this facility for almost 2 weeks. There was no doubt about her being a patient there. After going back and forth with me about it, she hung up the phone on me instead of transferring the call back to the operator to be properly rerouted. I called back & asked to speak to a supervisor - someone named Joyce answered but did not identify herself as a supervisor despite my 3 direct requests to speak to a manager. She proceeded to cover for the woman I had previously spoke with advising the call was not terminated as if I wasn’t the person on the other end! The customer service displayed by the clerks/schedulers of the psychology department is classless & very unprofessional. The assistance they provide is a very distasteful reflection of the department & I’m honestly relieved I wasn’t seeking their services! Beware when calling in to schedule - the representatives are not there to provide stellar assistance in the least bit!

See update below: Unfortunately, I am even more dissatisfied with NRH after dealing with their billing practices almost six months after our loved one was discharged. For months, they (Medstar) billed us for $2178.00 for three particular doctors’ charges BEFORE Medstar submitted them to insurance. The bills even threatened collection. We incurred those charges in late February, but Medstar didn’t submit them (finally, after my phone calls) to insurance until August! And then, we owed only $158. Families who need NRH’s help are under huge stresses and don’t need these sloppy,, thoughtless billing practices compounding their struggles. ——————————————————————- After our family member’s admission to NRH because of a massive, paralyzing stroke, we found the therapists to be first-rate. NRH’s excellence, however, ended there. Communication to and with the family from some of the doctors and the case manager was seriously lacking — we found them to be generally unavailable, distant, lacking compassion, or, at times, even hostile. They might blame our perceptions on “the system,” i.e., Medicare, but I think our negative experience was compounded by NRH’s general lack of good communication systems and practices and certain individuals’ lack of basic human kindness and empathy. “It’s how [they] treat people,” and NRH needs to improve the way they treat people.

I cannot say enough about the services provided by MedStar Rehabilitation Hospital! I was a little hesitant at first to commence my therapy sessions. However, after going through the process, I am confident my recovery progressed better than expected as a result. I would recommend and encourage anyone needing rehabilitation to seek MedStar services. I was in a serious car accident and necessitated Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy sessions. I did not want to attend therapy but my wife was insistent. She performed an exhaustive search in the DC Metro Area on facilities providing such services and ended up selecting MedStar due to its reputation and reviews. I reluctantly agreed to attend all three sessions. I had no idea how beneficial attending therapy sessions would be. I immediately felt as if the therapists listened to what I had to say, asked questions to understand my rehabilitation situation, and crafted sessions on a weekly basis based on my specific needs. I can’t say enough about all three therapists: Speech Therapy – Alyssa, Occupational Therapy - Anjali/Sam, and Physical Therapy – Aliana. They were all fantastic and definitely provided the service level MedStar is known for. Joey

I was here for three months because I had to take speech therapy. was not in the best condition when I arrived in January 2023. Patty was the best. She is a patient person who knows how to push you just enough so that you improve over time. The mental exercises she gave really got your thinking and making progress without even knowing it. I remember where I was in the beginning and where I was on the last day and I know for a fact I made so much progress. However, that would not have been possible without Patty.

To all at NRH, I arrived at NRH April 12, 2023 around 6pm from Medstar. On Friday I met with my PT/OT team PT team was Bronwyn, OT was Anna and Gina, they listened to my goals which was to do everything possible for me to walk the three steps into my house from the garage. I was able to do this with help but the goal never changed. Each person who crossed the threshold into my room, which was 210 was dedicated to me for as long as they were in there, Nurses, Fudie, Maddie, Obie, Baba, Zach, Alex, Nurses Aids; Philly, Christina, Zuri just to name a few. I tried to learn something about each nurse and tech, they all made me feel special because each person on Dr Simlote staff is important. So the bottom line is this, each person who came in was dedicated to me, they listened and of course the only way to succeed was to DO EVERYTHING THEY ASKED YOU TO DO. I have a motto the only hard day was yesterday. I want to thank everyone again who helped me through this journey. Dave Soverns

I have come to the conclusion that Jammy was the perfect person to attend to me during my stint at the rehabilitation facility. As a matter of fact, I tried above what I thought I would do just because of Jammy’s being there for me. I will never forget her. Thanks Jammy, you were the reason I tried as much even as hurt as I felt some days…

Brooke and her team, outstanding. As a health care professional with lots of experience with other seating and mobility departments, MedStar has no equal. Continue to advocate when other places has said, “nothing can be done for this person.” Instead, try MedStar — to go the extra extra mile toward a solution. Life-altering possibilities sought. Plus, plus and more pluses!

I prayed for my son to be accepted to NRH because I knew this is where he would receive the best care. Myself and son age 22 arrived at NRH in February 2022. We were discharged in April 2022. The level of care, compassion, patience and professionalism we received was remarkable. NRH doctors, nurses, therapist, security, administration, technicians and sitters played a vital role in my son’s road to recovery. Now that we are home the support and skills Ive learned at NRH allows me to continue to take great care of my son. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts! #1 Rehab hospital 🏥 Javi Roman will never forget you all!!!

I had a beautiful experience with the MedStar Health Physical Therapy Unit at the Neurorehabilitation Center. The moment I walked in I was greeted by some wonderful people/customer oriented young ladies at the front desk who made me feel welcome and comfortable, and at ease. While I took my seat to wait for my Doctor, I noticed that everyone who walked in the door was treated well. Because of the type of therapy that I was to receive, I was nervous and thought I would feel self conscious; but that didn't happen. I met Dr. Alicia Keefe, I immediately felt at ease with her. She was very calm, very nice. She explained everything that she was going to do, made me feel comfortable and was caring in her treatment of me. She also explained the exercises that I need to do at home to help myself as well. So my experience at the Center was the best thing that happened to me. I felt so encouraged to work with them by doing what I need to do to get well.

Had my first therapy session the other day. I was very impressed with the physical set up. It appeared to be on the cutting-edge with up to date equipment such as exo-skeletons . I was even more impressed with the staff who seemed to be highly knowledgeable and compassionate. I was particularly impressed with my therapist Ms. Patel and the help she gave me. She was excellent. I highly recommend her as a therapist.

I transferred my mom here for acute rehabilitation after her initial treatment at Suburban Hospital following her car accident. NRH is indeed the top rehabilitation hospital in the Washington area and an excellent hospital in the country. The therapists here are professional, positive, encouraging and engaging. The nurses, medical technicians, and staff here are caring, compassionate, and ready to assist. The NRH also has great equipment and tools to assist patients with all kinds of injuries to regain mobility and daily life activities. After a seven-weeks stay, my mom made tremendous progress from barely able to sit up on the edge of the bed to able to walk a lap around hall with only some assistance. If you are seeking the best rehabilitation treatment in the DC area, NRH is definitely the best hospital to go.

I had one session following a mild stroke after surgery. I think it was a productive and informative session that went beyond addressing my speech problems to include issues of anxiety, memory, and nutrition. There was great interest, empathy, and professionalism from the therapist. The session has helped me move beyond the initial trauma from the stroke. I warmly recommend the service.

The experience was fantastic! I was in a high intensity program. Based on my health diagnosis and what I was doing when I arrived at NRH, I didn't think the amount of days that they had allowed me would be sufficient. But, the team worked really hard and I went from not walking at all and not having feeling in my left side to walking on my own and climbing stairs. I am impressed and forever grateful.

The occupational therapists helping me learn how to drive with hand controls are patient and very knowledgeable. They are supportive in this effort that requires a lot of new learning and correction of habits.
