A true testament to girl power and feminism. She knew how to play the game and played it well. The surrounding park is beautiful. Bring some food for the pidgins and people watch with a cup of coffee. Or if you’re feeling super Russian, kvas or a beer if you’re there in the warmer months.

There is a monumental statue of Catherine the Great situated in the center of Ostrovskiy Square just off Nevsky Prospekt and next to the National Library RussianLibrary. The statue was designed by Russian artist M.O. Mikeshin and was unveiled in 1873. Here you see Catherine the Great in official gown with a sceptre in one hand and olive wreath in the other. She appears omnipotent and beloved. The statue is atop a bell shaped pedestal decorated by carvings of important Russian politicians, poets, generals and other dignitaries. The pedestal is fixed upon a granite staircase. The monument is impressive and interesting to see if you enjoy this type of sightseeing and plan to spend time in and around this area of St. Petersburg.
