For those who are not aware of what a Basilica is, it is important to understand the word’s origin. Basilica originates from the Roman language and was meant to describe a large Roman public building, usually a court of justice. When Christianity spread in the Roman Empire, forming Roman Catholic sect, the term came to refer specifically to a large or important church given special ceremonial rites by the Pope. As it is, there are currently well over 1500 basilicas all around the world. Out of these, except for just a few major basilicas, the others are all minor ones. Our Lady of Lanka began its life in 1911 as a tiny chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes (Mary Immaculate), France. It was built by the local pastor Fr. A. Kieger and a few Catholic laymen, and was a part of the parish of Ragama at the time. Years later in 1917 another pastor of the chapel Fr. A. Collorec had a grotto built for Our Lady of Lourdes, with the assistance of some Catholic workers from Colombo. With time the place became more popular, as the local Hindus and Buddhists started attending the services as well. This led to the chapel being expanded into a church in the 1930s. However, its true rise to fame occurred due to the former Archbishop of Colombo, Jean-Marie Masson. During the outbreak of the Second World War, Archbishop Masson made a vow. Masson knew that Ceylon was pretty much smack-dab right in the center of the world, literally. If any of the major powers at the time decided to use the island; they definitely would gain a huge advantage and may even be able to win the war. But at what cost? The island and its people would be destroyed by the wars of the larger countries. So prayed to God and vowed that if Ceylon were to be protected from major conflict, he would build a Votive Basilica under the title Our Lady of Lanka. His wish came true and Ceylon was indeed spared from any major warfare. The Archbishop was delighted and in 1946 he obtained approval from the then Pope, Pius XII, for the construction of a basilica in honor of Our Lady of Lanka. Sadly enough, Masson died the following year before he could see his efforts reach fruition. However, his successor Archbishop Thomas Cooray did not let the project vanish into the ether. Cooray took on the responsibility of ensuring his predecessor’s vision was realized; and he worked hard and in 1948 the Pope Pius XII established the Mary Immaculate, to be known as Our Lady of Lanka, as the principal Roman Catholic patroness of the island. He then acquired a nearby rubber estate and had the basilica constructed on the amply sized land. Many shady local trees such as Neem, Na and etc were planted to give a place for future pilgrims to rest under. On February 4, 1950 the cornerstone for the basilica was laid. Construction was done with great care and creativity for many years. It was completed in 1974, a year after Pope Paul VI endowed the church with the title of Minor Basilica. On February 6, 1974, the consecration of the Basilica and crowning of the statue of Our Lady of Lanka took place; making it the National Basilica of Sri Lanka. To this day it received tens of thousands of pilgrims annually, making it one of the most popular churches in the country. The architecture of the Basilica is a charming mix of local and traditional architecture. It is a marvelous Asian cultural symbol designed by Fr. Heras that includes a lot of local historical, cultural and archaeological components.

The Thewatte Basilica Shrine is a religious place for Roman Catholic believers. It is a church with a peaceful environment and a large area located in Ragama, Sri Lanka. This Shrine is a popular destination for a large number of devotees who come from far and wide to visit this sacred place. The Shrine was built after the 2nd world war as a gratitude to Mother Mary for her intercession in protecting Sri Lanka from the acts of war. It is a tranquil place to visit, meditate, and venerate. According to sources close to the temple, the Great Sacrifice performed with the blessings of the Mother of God helps to heal many patients. The Goddess who resides in this church has been blessed to bring sorrow to the hearts of other devotees and to fulfill their wishes and achieve victory. The church celebrates its feast on the 4th of February (independence day of Sri Lanka). In August, they organize another special prayer event for those who are sick. People come and pray for all physical and mental illnesses of their relatives, friends, and loved ones during that time. The Basilica is one of the largest RC churches in Sri Lanka and was completed in 1974. The architecture of the Basilica is a charming mix of local and traditional architecture. The front porch of the basilica is supported by six Grecian looking pillars, to commemorate the number of dioceses in Sri Lanka during the Second World War. The porch is crowned by a two-dimensional flame like design, the center of which is hollow. That hollow circle is set with glass panes pieced into an intriguing spider’s web; and at the center of the web is a cross bearing the figure of Christ. This bronze figurine was sculpted by the Sri Lankan artist, Leila Peiris. The glass panels and the cross front a high arched corridor with a ribbed roof reminiscent of the entrance of the Ajanta caves in India. On both sides of the roof rise two spires on top golden cupola-like bell enclosures. These resemble modern Hindu Temple gopurams. The central dome has the typical Eastern Oriental Church cross featuring three horizontal bars. The cruciform adjoins the semicircular roofs of the Basilica’s extensions, which are made of aluminum, and painted a tranquil blue. The history of the church dates back to 1911 when it was a tiny chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Over time, it became more popular as the local Hindus and Buddhists started attending the services as well. The Archbishop of Colombo, Jean-Marie Masson, made a vow during the Second World War that if Ceylon were to be protected from major conflict, he would build a Votive Basilica under the title Our Lady of Lanka. His wish came true, and in 1946, he obtained approval from the then Pope, Pius XII, for the construction of a basilica in honor of Our Lady of Lanka. The Basilica was completed in 1974, a year after Pope Paul VI endowed the church with the title of Minor Basilica. In conclusion, the Thewatte Basilica Shrine is a beautiful and peaceful place that attracts a large number of Roman Catholic devotees from all over the world. Its rich history, stunning architecture, and serene environment make it a must-visit destination in Sri Lanka. The Great Sacrifice performed with the blessings of the Mother of God helps to heal many patients. The Goddess who resides in this church has been blessed to bring sorrow to the hearts of other devotees and to fulfill their wishes and achieve victory.

Tewatte church- basilica of our Lady of Lanka, contrary to its name has actually been built in a rubber estate. In the 1950s during the Second World War, the then head of the church, which was a small establishment by then, wished for the war to not to affect our small island, and vowed to build a Basilica here in case our country was spared. Having granted his wish of being comparatively unharmed in the War, the construction of the basilica began. It took more than two decades but finally was complete in 1974. In 1948 the Pope Pius XII established the Mary Immaculate, to be known as Our Lady of Lanka, as the principal Roman Catholic patroness of the island. There are several chapels inside the church premises with a grotto as well as blessing waters. Many people visit the basilica despite being followers of other faiths. The vast area available for people to walk around, sit and talk, meditate or engage in other religious activities is ample and shady which is truly a blessing. You can drive into the very chapel premises and park inside the premises on a not-so-busy day. However people must remember not to litter this beautiful place. The church festival falls on 4th of February which is the independence Day of Sri Lanka, during which this area becomes very busy with so many people from around the island flocking in to witness the feast. Situated just 30 km from Colombo the basilica of our Lady of Lanka is a must visit for anyone.

This is the biggest Church in South Asia. Still holds one of the magestic views even in night time. Very calm, quite and clean place to relax your mind. I would recommend everyone to visit here even though you are not a catholic. As its a very holy place I would recommend everyone visit here with great responsibility and enjoy the environment. You can even go inside the church and experience the finest architectural marvels.

One of the most popular shrines of Catholic people in Sri Lanka. A very vast area with lots of shades and the church looks more grandeur. There is plenty of parking but recommend to park as soo a s you enter into the church on feast days( since there are thousands of prilgrimmers visiting). The new addition, with the new chappel makes it even stunning and sinply inspire visitors. But to feel all these you need to visit on a less busy day. Overall happy about the place but can be improves furcher with more facilities like wash rooms and shelter for rainfall.

A great place to relax your mind. A mind-calming setting. In my opinion, the ideal time to visit there is about 7 a.m. on weekdays. You should go here. This is one of the most significant Catholic sanctuaries in Sri Lanka. A large region with many shades and the church appears to be more stately. There is lots of space available. The new extension, with the new chapel, enhances the beauty and just inspires people. To experience all of this, however, you have to go on a less crowded day.

An excellent spot to clear your head. A mind-calming setting. I think that on weekdays, about seven in the morning, is the best time to go there. This is where you ought to go. Among Sri Lanka's most important Catholic shrines is this one. A broad area with a variety of hues, and the church seems more dignified. Plenty of room is available. People are inspired and the beauty is enhanced by the new chapel and extension. However, you have to visit on a less crowded day to take in all of this.

It is a church with a quiet environment and a large area. A large number of devotees come to this sacred place from far and wide. This Ragama, Thewaththa Church Place , especially its beautiful design, creates an eye-catching view of the Basilica. Sources close to the temple say that the Great Sacrifice performed with the blessings of the Mother of God helps to heal many patients. The Goddess who resides in this church has been blessed to bring sorrow to the hearts of other devotees and to fulfill their wishes and achieve victory. I also prove to say this as a note writing some of my personal experiences.

Peaceful meditation can be done at the sight. Further, praying harms giving also possible. Greene vegetation cover and monuments constructed and historical information can be collected, the museum is also a good place to look into. Holy mas is conducted in Sinhala, English, Tamil, and sometimes in Latin You can have residence houses for the pilgrimages.

"Sweet serenity", Truly a blessed place. Situated in the middle of a beautiful estate surrounded by greenery. You feel the difference and the presence the moment you step inside this hallowed grounds. Go early morning if you need to worship in peace. There is a canteen, wash room facilities and a souvenir shop. There is parking near the church or you can park near the top of the road and take the long flight of steps leading up to the Basilica...

The Basilica of Our Lady of Lanka is a Roman Catholic basilica in Tewatte, Sri Lanka. Being thus in a somewhat distant suburb of Colombo, it comes under the purview of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Colombo and is a site of pilgrimage for Sri Lankan Catholics. Calm place.
