On this list of best beaches in Sri Lanka, a name sure to appear is Unawatuna Beach. Just an hour away from Sri Lanka’s capital city, Colombo, this beach is a heaven for beach bums. With fancy restaurants, bars, shacks, beach properties, shopping streets and fun activities worth engaging in that are carried out in the surrounding areas, Unawatuna beach is a great spot to unwind, ditching the routine. The beach looks like a banana and has golden sand with sparkling water. Here, the lush palm trees not only make the beach look extra scenic but also contribute to keeping the environment pleasant on most days. On a visit here, one is sure to see young kids belonging to locally residing families take a dip into the cool water of the sea. What a beautiful way for the locals to beat Sri Lanka’s heat, right? And that is not all! The beach also has arrangements of sunbeds, mats, and umbrellas which also prove to be a blessing for anybody who decides to watch the sun take a dip in the ocean whilst reveling in the sundowner. Tourists can avail of these sunbeds on rent from vendors that are easily spotted here. The local Sri Lankan culture reflects through various features at the beach. From attractive restaurants that serve finger licking local cuisine to shops that sell trendy clothes influenced by the local attire, this famous beach is worth a few hours of your time!. copied.

Please DO NOT support animal cruelty on this beach by taking photos/giving money to people with monkeys in costumes! These animals belong in the wild and not on chains. It’s a shame that this is legal and there is no ban by the government!

Crystal clear blue waters, amazing waves and perfect spots for a swim, all packed into one! If you are visiting this side of SriLanka please do not miss out on Unnawatuna and it's beautiful beaches and upbeat vibe all along. With shops and shacks littered all along, Unnawatuna was surely a showstopper during our trip to SriLanka!

It is highly tourists attraction place in the Galle district where situated few miles away from the Galle town in the Matara road. Before hit the Tsunami catastrophe to the Island this place was very natural beautiful beach. Sea bed was very attractive and most popular game was SCUBA diving. After that was very man made beach. Cabana were destroyed.

    * Introducing marine turtle Millions of years, before man colonized Sri Lanka, Sea turtles had been coming to the undisturbed beaches of the island to lay their eggs. Five out of 7 species of sea turtles come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka. All 5 species are either critically endangered or endangered. The green turtle The loggerhead turtle The hawksbill Turtle The Leatherback Turtle The olive ridley turtle Sharks attack them. Some eat their meat. Wonderful initiative on their part to protect its turtles. Do not hesitate to visit them during your stay in Sri Lanka and make a donation to support them.OTCP

One of the most popular beach in Sri Lanka. Always busy with many tourists. Therefore many shops along the road from galleries road to beach. Totally different atmosphere there. Nice sandy beach. There is an island close to the beach and able to coral reef and beautiful fishes. Very hard to find the parking spots

Beautiful beach, there is no waves because of natural fence from stones on the distance. There are a lot of cafes and shops

This beach is very elegant and have to drive about 1 km through a narrow road. It is a good place for sea bathing and the sea is not rough and deep.

Unawatuna beach is popularly known as a family friendly area especially with the shallow water levels most ideal for swimming.

Long beautiful beach with many restaurants. Waves big enough to have fun and no underwater stones in sight which makes it safe to swim.

Very dirty and ugly compared to beaches around mirissa and tangalle. Where the beaches are really like paradise I have visited over 20 beaches in Sri lanka over the last 1 month and this beach is the worst. Plastic in the water. Road is so congested and polluted. He's there are many cafes and shops but that is all that it has going for it. I came here 15 years ago when it was paradise. Avoid this beach

Nice beautiful scenery. Tides are rough, so it's more suitable for surfing than swimming. Some nice hotels along the beach. You need to know good places to eat because the food in most places does not taste as good as it looks. Enjoyable experience overall and the locals are friendly.
