Extremely unique residence which survived WWII bombing mostly intact, miraculously because the two buildings on either side were destroyed. A fascinating history is told by the guide during the hour long tour of the primary rooms, which have been fully restored. Much of the fittings, doors and windows were removed to save them from being damaged in the war and had to be replaced and that was done with great care for authenticity. This is a rare house to survive in central London and well worth the visit. Photos are not allowed in most rooms.

The house and tour were wonderful. Unfortunately they do not allow photos in all but two rooms (a very outdated rule). They are only open on Sundays, so plan accordingly. The guide was very informative, but oversold the house's ability to be rented out for use as an event space. The house seems to only be open due to requirements that some objects on loan be accessible to the public. Also disappointing that the rear gardens are not open to the public.

3.75 stars. Nice place to visit if in London. Gotta say our guide really was 5 stars. She was very very good - super knowledgeable, clear and took her time. Nice to hear about the history of the house, Spencer family, Rothschild's family support and walk around the house and garden. Lovely setting. Only open on Sundays and tours run every 30mins. £18.50 per adult. Says tour run for 50 mins but ours went for about 90 mins. Short walk from green park. If possible I'd suggest buying tickets in advance. We didn't but I have a feeling we got lucky.

We came for the Sunday tour, and loved the excellent guide who took us through the 8 rooms in approx. 1:10, going through the architecture, furniture, artwork, and the house's history. Note that a lot of items are reproductions, and photos are only allowed in two rooms. You need to prebook, though note it's free if you have the Historic Houses membership (email them). Toilets are available onsite, and the woman's in lower ground is fairly ornate. There was one large slight of stairs on the tour, but easy to navigate.

Had the most wonderful time on this tour. We unfortunately did not catch our tour guides name but she mentioned that she loved the national portrait gallery and was phenomenal. I highly recommend visiting if you have a little over an hour to kill -this is a perfect Sunday outing. So interesting, beautiful and impressive. We were very lucky to get a rather small group at 3pm on a Sunday. They also mentioned that they are only open on Sundays because the building is used for offices during the week which was very good to know. I think this tour is more than worth the price, it is so thorough and interesting and all the staff are so helpful and kind. I would love to come back. I recommend buying tickets in advance but we were able to buy them there as well.

Warm welcome to the house. Great cloakroom facility. Ladies, visit the loo in the basement to see a wonderful doll's House. Excellent fully escorted tour of this beautiful town house.

Spencer House is London’s most magnificent eighteenth-century aristocratic town house. Built between 1756-1766 for John, first Earl Spencer, an ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997) it is London’s finest surviving eighteenth-century town house. Wonderful building and a great tour. The rooms, art work and furniture are well worth a visit. Spencer House, is open to the public for viewing every Sunday (except during August) from 10.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. (last tour). Access is by guided tour, which lasts approximately 1 hour. Tours begin at regular intervals and the maximum number of visitors on each tour is 15. If you are a member of Historic Houses you get in free and don't have to book. There are toilets. There is no cafe. Small souvenirs such as postcards are sold.

This relatively unknown house is one of the most brilliantly decorated in London. Our guide was amazingly knowledgeable, witty and charming.

Excellent guided tour of 8 rooms. Guide is excellent and so informative about history of town house. How the interiors were restored. A gem hidden away near Green Park.

One of the surviving early 19th century Aristocratic "Palaces" of St James & Piccadilly. The London mansions of the wealthiest of the old titled aristocratic families of England. Many of which had their main "seat" in the country with the big English Country estates. Spencer House was the London home of the Rothschild banking family for many years. Benefitting from a top location in affluent St James, neighboring the Royal Palaces and with a prominent view across Green Park. Ornate and opulent interiors.

A pre-booked tour was made interesting and informative by our guide Olivia. The state rooms have been beautifully restored. No photos except in the Great Room (which is well worth a few pictures!).

Little gem in the heart of London. It’s only open on the weekend and you need to book for an hour and a half tour of the house. Beautiful home, very friendly tour guide, amazing garden. I can’t recommend it enough if you like to visit beautiful homes and are into history.

A hidden gem in London. Fascinating history, and so beautifully restored. Our guide (who’s name I’m very sorry I cannot remember) was wonderful, full of little secrets and pointing out things in the rooms that we would have missed otherwise. I could have stayed there much longer. Highly recommended.

The organized tour covers history of the family, house and art. A stunning 90 min experience. Easily the best preserved 18th century house in London open to the public.

Only available on a Sunday. Superb guide introduced the Spencer family and how the house overlooking Green Park was rescued by Lord Rothschild in 1982 with a restoration of the highest standard. The ceiling in the painted room is the highlight but then so are the door knobs! Don't miss this sublime building if you are in London...but be grateful the Luftwaffe did between 1939 and 1945.

Beautiful house inside and outside. Very close to the park near green park station. Replica decor and furnishings of the original Spencer House before the war. Well worth the visit.

Why would the English people allow their Government Councils to let some tacky high-rise building be built right next to this beautifully crafted building? It makes no sense at all - it is a disgrace that city Council would pass a tall skyscraper to be placed next door to a National Treasure such as Spencer House. I find it impossible to understand the logic behind this atrocious modern eyesore that is towering over such a wonderful building & garden. The garden would be in total shade half the day omg, the mind boggles that no one stopped this modern day madness!

Outstanding quality guide staff, highlighting so many features that we might have walked right past without noticing, or understanding the significance of had it not been for their detailed and knowledgeable commentary. Fascinating history to the building through the ages, and we are so fortunate not only that it has been so beautifully restored, but that the public is allowed to visit. No need to take photos - spend time looking properly at what's in front of you and listening to the guide respectfully, marvelling at the depth and detail of their knowledge, and then buy the £6 guidebook in the foyer on the way out.

Definitely worth a visit. A building you may have passed many times without ever realising what was hidden in there. There's a long history to this building and our guide was super knowledgeable and fun. She was somehow able to remember all the names of our group too. An impressive skill! You aren't meant to take photos in most of the house so I remained respectful of the rules but it's an amazing location. Only able to visit on a Sunday so ensure you book before you intend to visit
