Bremen, in the German state of Lower Saxony, is a truly gorgeous and wonderful city. The market square is one of the most beautiful places I visited in Bremen, with historical architectural design. I'm looking forward to returning here.

(Translated by Google) In the heart of Bremen there is an open environment, surrounded by beautiful buildings and a medieval post-medieval facade. The square used to be the main market for merchants who used to take the river to Bremen to sell their goods, and the Bremen people and shopkeepers also went shopping there. Today, however, this place has other narratives. Narrating the protests and demands of people who, for whatever reason, want their demands to be heard by the authorities or others. The statue of Roland is the spirit of freedom of this beating heart of Bremen. That the essence of its existence lies in the mobility and the pulse of the multitude of people who are there, whether business people or demonstrators or people looking into the camera.

I have been to many cities in Germany, but was surprised by the impressive architecture and diversity of buildings in the old center of Bremen. If I had know that there was this much to see we would have committed more time to wandering in the center of Bremen. Amazing architecture, surprisingly old and well preserved. I really enjoyed my visit to Bremen and hope to return in the daylight and hopefully in the summer!

We’ve been driving around Germany for weeks and surprisingly enjoyed the Christmas markets in Bremen more so than some other more popular ones because of the great variety of food and beautiful lighting! The crepes were to die for!

Beautiful place. Well earned 5 stars for architecture. Du to Covid situation everything is closed but it is also very quiet so you can peacefully enjoy the views. The city clearly have some problems with homeless people but at least they are not aggressive or drunk. Worth to visit!

Really pretty square, one of the nicest I've seen in Europe. Don't eat in the restaurants around the square as they're mostly tourist traps (expensive and very average).

The market place is surrounded by many historic buildings. On one hand you have the very old beautiful town hall and traditional typical Hanseatic buildings and in the other hand the building of the local parliament (Bremische Bürgerschaft).

I got here in November before they set up the Christmas market, and I'm here after they've taken it down, it's an incredible experience to see before it's an incredible experience to see before, during, and after! So much history here, a lot to learn, and a lot to see!

This is one of the most beautiful market squares I have ever seen. A must-visit for every tourist visiting Bremen. Here you can also see and visit St. Petri Dom Bremen free, the Bremen City Hall (Bremer Rathaus) 9€ entry fee, the Roland Statue, the bronze statue by Gerhard Marks - the Bremen musicians' statue.

I think this may well be one of my favourite places - especially at Christmas! Lots to do, mixture of old and new architecture and lots of sculpture to look out for. Great shops, from high street favourites to quirky small shops. Good choice of bakeries and restaurants. Really great place to visit and easy to get round as well as a good base to visit other cities.

Had fun wandering the christmas market. Atmosphere is super nice, weather was cold obviously 😊 The city makes you feel like you're in a fairy tale. The streets, the christmas songs, lights, carousel, smiling people, glühwine... It was like a different life. I advise everyone who reads my review, you should visit Bremen on Christmas time. You won't regret it

Main square of the city with many nice historical buildings and tourist attractions - Bremen Musicians sculpture, Town Hall, Cathedral, Roland statue. All buildings are very old and a bit dark, you can almost feel that old atmosphere of the city (almost because of great number of tourists). It's a very popular place in Bremen - very crowded by tourists. Also, some city events are taking place here. Trams are going across the square so need to be careful while looking at the buildings. One more interesting attraction - a special manhole with a hole, after putting there a coin you can hear the voice of one of the Bremen Musicians. It's located near the souvenirs point.

Although it is now used as a market place only during the Christmas markets and other specific events, Marktplatz keeps being the center of the city since it is home to the most famous sights of Bremen: the Rathaus (Town Hall), the Statue of Roland and the impressive St.Petri Cathedral. Special mention also for the beautiful Schütting building, headquarter of the Chamber of Commerce of Bremen.

At least parts of the market place had been in function since the age of Charlemagne. Its southern side originally was the bank of river Balge (river), a branch of the Weser and Bremen's first port. There was an easy access for boats, but this section of the bank was too low for permanent buildings. From late 12th to late 13th century, the area of the market place was levelled and plastered in several stages. Theories that before the construction of the Bremen Town Hall in 1405 to 1410 all or only most of the market activities took place near Liebfrauenkirche have been falsified by archeological findings. Meantime with the townhall, Roland Statue was erected on the market square. Some time later, a stone wall was built between the inner and the outer areas of the square. The inner space was used for the market. A rule was made which allowed only merchants whose vehicles could pass one of the seven openings in the wall to sell their products. The city council made this rule in order to ensure that there was sufficient space for pedestrians between the market stalls.
