Great old pub with maybe a dozen or so different beer types! Edit: Had set meal for 14 which offered a good selection to choose from. Overall good but not great. Curry comes without rice which the waitress explained was how the India chef said it was supposed to be like (weird if you ask me - people want rice or nan bread!). Deduct half a star. Nacho's were awesome! $39 steak was I little ordinary. Deduct half a star I'll make the review 5 stars but only because of a great selection of beers.

Not sure what has changed since the last time we visited here, as we always seem to end up eating here when visiting town and usually love it, but I was very disappointed with my meal this time around. The prices are up, the meal size was small and not very impressive, but worst of all they took so long. Nearly an hour to wait for an underwhelming dinner, leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. I really wanted desert, but was not prepared to wait any more for it. Time to find another favourite local eatery for next visit.

We like the Arms. The room was comfortable. Parking at the back. The craft beer line up is above average and meals were delicious. Goat curry and tuna are pictured. It is also right in the middle of Whanganui. Easy to find and easy to get in and out of. We did it and you aren’t likely to be disappointed. The locals agree. Packed.

Dude behind the bar is awesome, fast, efficient and friendly even though Friday night was busy.. Dinner was amazing. Cheesy garlic bread best ever. Lamb rump. Perfectly cooked, tender and tasty. Bottle of wine to share. Wife had sticky doughnuts for entree. First time she's been quiet! You gotta try it just once. Her words 'the tuna meal is amazing, perfectly seared and tasty other bits on the side'

Easily seated around 6pm on a holiday week. Nice interior and live music out back. Drinks came quickly and friendly staff. The seafood chowder was so-so. Two pieces of fish and a few small pieces of mussels or something but otherwise mostly just soup. Bread was fresh and crispy. My partner had a burger and it came with lots of fries, cooked decently but nothing special. Would go back and try other items probably as it’s a fun atmosphere.

We enjoyed lunch at the Rutland Arms Inn on a weekday - they were very busy! Our meals came out quicker than we anticipated given how busy they were and they were totally delicious! We will definitely return next time we're down that way

The room was great; clean, spacious and elegant with windows that could be opened for fresh air. Housekeepers were very friendly and helpful. It was a nice change from sterile motels and hotel rooms. We were in the deluxe suite. Bar and wait staff were also lovely and we felt very welcomed and comfortable. Would stay again. Situation was brilliant, so close to restaurants, galleries and the river. Summer must be even better!

This is our third visit to stay at the Rutland Arms. We always enjoy staying here. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. The complimentary breakfast is a must have. The muesli, fruit compote & yoghurt, and toast with a choice of spreads kept us going for a good part of the day. We ate in the restaurant both nights and found the food to be very good with generous servings. I must make mention to the attentive staff in the bar & the restaurant, and the lovely cleaning staff. It is great to see you all still there when we return.

We have dined here many times. Excellent food, delicious, well presented and always large meals. Lovely decor. Very disappointing service today with two of staff coming across as rude and like we were inconvenient.

Good food, lovely setting but as always the service was terrible, slow to take orders, upwards of 45 minutes or more to get meal once ordered. Hasn't gotten any better service wise over the years even with ownership changes

This is a truly lovely wee hotel. We recommend the muesli for breakfast it is made in house. Bed was comfortable. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Special mention to Sue the housekeeper who is a true legend with her enthusiasm and care for detail.

Warm friendly atmosphere the place was buzzing busy, our food was tasty and presented well. Only negative was portion size for money left us still hungry. The garlic bread was the absolute best

Stayed here just one night but the staff were great. Really high quality service and super friendly. The room was large and nicely finished but being an older building we could hear our neighbor talking to herself for a while.

Great pub but actually more of a restaurant. Food never let's me down. It would be nice if they changed up the menu a bit more though. Very good selection of NZ craft beer as well as a good gin thing going on. It's a place we would always take visitors.

What a lovely, relaxed place to stay right in the heart of the city. We had a big comfortable room with lots of old-fashioned charm. Everything was convenient and made easy for us by the great service we received. We will definitely be back.

I was expecting more from the Rutland Arms. The fish and chips were just okay. The fish was overcooked to be a bit dry and I would have liked some real Tartar sauce. Staff were nice and the tea was very good and generous.

We went for Saturday morning Brunch, sat in the bright airy courtyard & read the menu. There is the usual selection of offerimgs with the bar operating. We had Bacon & Eggs,an Omlete & Waffle Stack all nicely cooked & presented with bubbles & hot chocolate. Good value, nice environment & helpful staff. Worth a visit when in Wanganui.

I was only there briefly for business, but the Rutland Arms was quiet, comfortable and ideally located for my work trip. Good secure parking off the street as well. The meal I had downstairs in the restaurant was worth the stay alone!

I have not rated the rooms as my group only dined in the bar restaurant. So based on the meal and bar service I thoroughly recommend the Rutland. Great meals, taste and volume,.did not walk away hungry. The staff at the bar and attending to the tables were really lovely, made for a great experience. It was a busy time with the Whanganui having it vintage weekend and even so, the staff served everyone well.

We went for breakfast and my two teens enjoyed the belgian waffles immensely. And I greatly enjoyed the super yummy smoked salmon eggs Benny. Staff are super friendly and made it a special family holiday treat :)

[Review in relation to the Cafe only] Nice setting, definitely more of a winter vibe. Service was a little distant, food was OK. They FORGOT to take our food, until I reminded them. Drinks were nice.

Good pint, but insultingly overpriced food. I ordered a lamb filo thing with a long description for $22 and received barely a mouthful if nourishment. Perhaps I had inadvertently stepped through a portal to the Champs Elysee as I crossed the threshold…but alas the view through the windows and the quality of the food remained firmly those of Whanganui, it was only the feeling of having been financially set back several months by a snack that carried any similarity.

Bizarre management of tables. Pub was almost empty because tables has been booked up to hours after our visit but they still could not be used. Had to sit on one side of the bar. Beer was good though. Didn't want

Love the indoor outdoor flow. After Farmers market and art visits, a very welcome cooling Apple Cider/Craft beer stop. Also a place to refresh for lunch, and reenergize.

Great place, nice atmosphere. What wonderful meals we had. So much so that we booked for the next night as well. Plenty of good craft beers. Nice wines

Whanganui is an underrated treasure. I’d recommend the Rutland as a great base for a weekend stay. Brilliantly located for the river and the town. Food was excellent, if service a little slow (I think they were short staffed in the kitchen). All the staff were friendly and professional. I happily stay there again.

We loved our time at Rutland Arms Inn. The building has a wonderful historic feel with all the modern amenities. The Inn itself is very homey and welcoming and the continental breakfast is delicious. Staff were fantastic and the location is right in the middle of things - yet very quiet.

Had a large family gathering here for dinner and it was fantastic. Staff were very accommodating to our large party including baby high chairs. Service was great and professional (the wait staff all seemed very young). Meals were delicious and way more than just pub grub!
