Love taking our kiddos here to explore the well-preserved site of Lower Fort Garry. This is a national historic site that has just reopened with live interpreters dressed in mid-19th century costume. Currently, you are unable to go into any of the historical buildings but many of the contents are on display outside. Treaty One is 150 years old this year and there is a special activity set up around this. It's a beautiful way to spend 2-3 hours. Restrooms are open.

A fur trading company fort along the route from Winnipeg to York Factory on Hudson's Bay. A nice quick stop on your way to the beaches north of here.

Plan to spend some time here. Take a picnic. Hang out on the grounds. It's dog-friendly, even in the buildings. Interpretive guides adopt characters. Play along. Many would do well in improv! Highlights are the Blacksmith and the Bake House. Demos are frequent. Obviously, a superb place to take kids. In 2017, admission is free. It will still be worth it when they charge again.

Cool place. Nice to spend some time with your kids. We went there thinking it was going to be small like Fort Gibraltar and spent 2.5 hours learning story. Employees do role playing telling their stories about their jobs at the Fort

Went on Family day with my 2 kids. Spent 3 hours here. Kids were entertained, had a lot to do and at no time were bored. They worked for the Hudson Bay Company for the day. They were given jobs to complete and at the end of the experience got to choose a prize. We all had a good time.

Despite not being able to enter buildings during Covid, Parks Canada has set up outdoor stations to share historical story and fact...actors are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The emphasis this year on Treaty 1 really helped me to want to learn more about our complicated history and the reality of the Indigenous experience from the time of the Treaties, and how it has affected their people. A beautiful spot, well worth the visit.

It's a living museum with people in period clothing.

It was wonderful to everything again, and the interpreters are amazing. I think it actually was nicer interacting with them outdoors, rather than in the small buildings. The Treaty One displays were well done.

This place reminded me at once of the TV series "Outlander" season 4 onwards. Surprisingly, the first settlement house that greets you is the James Fraser house who is also the name of the lead character. I loved the way staff are dressed in period costumes as it added authenticity to the surroundings. You will experience how they skin animals for their needs, fabricate steelworks, go to a shop, bake bread. You'll find some native houses but I wish they could add some people to be more interactive.

The place is well maintained, very clean and it's interactive. Good reference of history. Nice to see the depiction of the past. The kids enjoyed their visit. They participated in a scavenger hunt and led to a nice souvenir at the end.. They also have a charging station if you have an electronic vehicle. It's good to have since you are driving out of the city.

I didn't realize that you could get free entry with a National Parks pass! It was a lovely place to visit. So many neat exhibits and artifacts to see. The staff actors who played the roles of the inhabitants did a fabulous job explaining things to us. Would definitely go again! I only wished they had marked the washrooms more clearly on the map! (There is one in the SE corner of the fort!)

We had the most amazing time during my recent visit to Lower Fort Garry! The staff members were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, adding a personal touch to the entire experience. The historic houses were beautifully maintained, offering a glimpse into the past that was both fascinating and captivating. The meticulous upkeep of the grounds highlighted the dedication and care that goes into preserving this historical gem. The on-site restaurant was a delightful surprise, with reasonable prices & tasted great. We had smiles on our faces the entire day. I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Lower Fort Garry to all!!

A must to visit. 1.5hr guided tours available or go alone. Many original items on display for you to touch and smell a piece of Manitoba history. Multiple buildings that have been marvelously restored.

My family and I had a wonderful day here! We participated in the blacksmithing and bannock making activities and the instructors were so friendly and knowledgeable. We got to use a hammer and an anvil to create something from soft metal and stamp a medallion! The bannock is made in a cast iron pan over coals. It tasted so good with butter and jam. There are lots of things to see and do. My kids also liked playing croquet, touching the furs, and playing roles. They also just enjoyed running in the open grass which is well maintained. My eldest did the 'scavenger hunt' in the explorer booklet and at the end of the visit, went to the treasure chest to enter the code he deciphered and got a prize! He was so happy. I had many memories going to LFG as a kid (field trips and family outings) and I hope my kids have good memories too!

The last time I had been here was when I was a kid in the early 1980s. Had we not been affected by the pandemic, the buildings would have been open to the public. The main building, though, would have been closed anyway due to a water leak. I really appreciated the great demeanor of the actors who were present to give us glimpses into the lives of the people who worked and resided in and around the fort. My favourite part was hearing the cook tell us what drinks he made there (tea, hot chocolate and even coffee though that wasn't typical in the late 1800s). There's more but I suggest you visit the Fort to find out.

Despite the covid restrictions, we were able to fully explore the grounds around the buildings in the fort. Interpreters working there shifted in and out of character, telling us about the history of Treaty 1 land and the impact HBC had on the land, trading, and relationships with the various indigenous and Metis people living in the area. I felt it was a balanced recounting of Manitoba's history and I appreciated that many of the people working there spoke of their mixed indigenous and european ancestry. It helped me to understand how complicated and nuanced our shared past really is. Thank you for opening my eyes and helping me to learn more in such a loving and gracious way!

It's an absolutely beautiful place that's worth visiting. The fact that the original walls are still present is really cool. It's unfortunate that due to covid we weren't able to go in the buildings but walking around was just as cool. Definitely a must stop.

The work Parks Canada has done to make this a fantastic experience during a pandemic is exceptional. It's quite possible that the overall visitor experience is better now than in the past, even though you aren't allowed in the buildings. I would encourage any young families who need a staycation event here in southern Manitoba to make a trip out to Lower Fort Garry.

I love our national parks. They're always very well maintained and lower fort Garry was no different. Cheap entrance fees and the staff go out of their way to answer your questions and show you how something worked in the mid 1800s. They play the part as best as they can.

Went during the middle of the week in the summer so not many people around, which was okay by us. Always a great experience when we come here! The staff are informative and explained many things. The blacksmith made a nail for our out of town guests and pictures are welcomed! Love the history of Lower Fort Garry.

A pretty good place to check out. They have a Covid protocol in place and it’s a trip to the past. Bring snacks because there doesn’t seem for be a food stand.

I live only a couple of miles from this National Historic Site yet I haven't been there since a grade 4-5 field trip it's change a lot from what I remember but for the better truly a gem just 20 minutes north of the city once again well worth a visit you never know what you'll see there but I can pretty much guarantee you'll enjoy yourself

Always a great place to visit! Very reasonable (cheap) to get in. The costumed staff are fun and knowledgeable in their history. The store has excellent ideas for stocking stuffers if you shop before September long weekend.

Buildings represent how they were in 1851. Very well done with personnel in period costumes talking as if they were in that year. A must go if history is of any interest to you.

It's come a long way since I went there in grade school. Not a place that you think of going to unless you are entertaining company from out of town. Even I can honestly say even though I only live about 5-6 miles from my house I only been there once in the 10 years I've lived in St. Andrews. Well worth an afternoon with the wife.
