We absolutely had the most amazing time staying here! I can not express my gratitude enough for everyone who made this one of the most amazing stays I have ever had. The family went so above and beyond in every possibly way imaginable. I would give them 10 stars if I could. Clean. Cozy. Warm. Welcoming. and Relaxing. I recommend anyone to stay here. It is also right across the street from the bus terminal. The dinner was a great 8 course meal of fresh locally sourced food and included in the price. Breakfast was also great. They recently remodeled in the last couple years so much of the house is modern and elegantly decorated. They also have a private onsen which was so relaxing. If you are debating to stay in Shirakawa-go for the night I say do it. It is not every often you can have an experience like this. Not to mention seeing the town before and after all the tourists are there is well worth it.

We are sitting on the bus, just checked out from this wonderful traditional inn. We have so much gratitude for the family who hosted us. So many beautiful moments of the most gracious hospitality. We struggle with our Japanese but it is clearly very important to the staff to try to understand us and learn a bit of our English along the way. We interacted with 5 or 6 family members of multiple generations and they were all kinder than words can express. The accommodations were serene and we were upgraded to a room with a private bathroom and shower plus a lovely view from the second floor. The on-site onsen was available for use in the evening and morning. The food was local, local, local. The vegetables were hand picked from the surrounding mountains. The fish, from the nearby river. Delightful surprises around every corner. We were given a tour of the village and taken to an observatory which was a blessing because it saved our feet from having to walk up the large hill. We dream of returning some day to support this wonderful family-run inn again. 寛大なおもてなしに感謝します

The hotel offers a fantastic stay! Location is good, and upon arrival, there a simple tour on the van. Room is comfortable! Their food are all fresh produce! We tried some bear meat, deer tongue & meat which are exceptional! And these were hunted by one of the members of the family! They have some in-house alcohol which is produced by themselves and are pretty unique. The place is family owned & ran! So every team member there knows each other. It was a homely stay and a place that we will definitely stay at in our next trip to Shirakawa go.

The location is superb. One of the biggest perks was to be able to walk around Shirakawago early in the morning with very few people. The minimalistic room was very spacious and had a beautiful view of the river. The shared bath also had a view of the river and was mostly unoccupied during my stay there. The owner was very friendly and gave us a tour in his van. Near the end of the tour, he helped took a lot of pictures of us at the observation deck. Dinner and breakfast were wonderful with fresh and seasonal ingredients. I loved the kuromoji gin. The hospitality that was being provided by the family is exceptional.

One night stay at this lovely homely place! Super convenient location, directly opposite bus terminal. Super lovely hosts and local cuisine served for dinner and breakfast. Complimentary tour in owner’s van to viewpoint. Definitely recommend!

The location is very convenient, right across the road from the Shirawakago bus terminal. The owners were very kind and we also got to participate in a tour (with them) around the village which was fun, enlightening and helpful. Also, during our dinner - a 9 course meal - the family running the ryokan spanning across 4 or 5 generations, were all very hospitable and friendly, and helped us understand the history of the village and the food we were eating. Our experience here was even better than we imagined. On the next day, it was snowing so we asked if someone could drive us to the observation deck again; they accepted graciously without any fuss (we paid out of respect, of course). Overall, a very very special experience which complemented our first ever visit to Japan, hope to come back again some day

An unforgettable experience - especially made so wonderful by the welcoming and generous hospitality of the family that runs the accommodation. What a pleasure it was to meet all generations of the hosts! The accommodation has been owned and operated by the same family for generations. However, it has been recently renovated and restored, creating a beautiful space that carefully preserves the hundred year old building. The rooms themselves are beautiful and relaxing, and the recently renovated Onsen has amazing views of beautiful Shirakawago. Not only this, but the food was amazing, if not the standout. The breakfasts and dinners were extensive multi course affairs showcasing local seasonal produce from the surrounding mountains. The dining room was also a beautiful space, featuring amazing views and sounds of the river. It seriously was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had! They also offer drink pairings with dinner and have a small (but very delicious!!) selection of French wines. It is the kind of place that is so beautiful any season of the year, and we cannot wait to return again. Again, thankyou so much for having us stay!

My wife & I stayed overnight at Shiroyamakan in Dec. 2023 and it was an unforgettable experience! As I understand it, the exterior of the structure remains original to its late-1800s construction. Yet the 4th generation owners recently undertook a massive renovation of the interior & the results are breathtaking. Of the inn’s 4 rooms, 2 have been kept in traditional ryokan style & 2 have been converted to a modern style. Our modern room on the ground floor featured huge picture windows, one of which looked out onto a koi pond & the other onto the Shō River (I shot the attached photo of the great white heron from our room!). The room had its own ductless heat/AC unit & heat also radiated up from the gorgeous wood floor, making it oh-so-cozy. Finally, our room included its own super-modern Toto toilet & washroom. For ablutions, Shiroyamakan offers two stunning hinoki wood bathing rooms. Each very large room is private, so you won’t be in there w/ strangers & your family can use the spring-fed bath together. I will never forget how amazing the bathing rooms smelled! All that said, as great as the building is, it was the people who made our experience special. Shiroyamakan is a family affair & the proprietors, supported by their adult kids (plus their kids’ spouses), made us feel at home from the instant we stepped in. Words & pictures can’t do the place justice, but hopefully this review gives you a sense for how much we loved it. If you’re planning a visit to Shirakawa-go, I can’t recommend a stay at Shiroyamakan highly enough. It’s the sort of experience that lifts your spirit & stays with you.
