(Translated by Google) One of the tourist destinations in Jogja if you want to know the history of the Jogja monument and also the palace. There is a diorama in the middle complete with explanations. It's better here at night because it can be more relaxed and nice to take pictures with sufficient light.

A historical monument which is one of Jogja's Philosophical Axis (called Sangkan Paraning Dumadi, together with Keraton and Panggung Krapyak). Initially, this monument was not shaped like it is now, which can be seen in the Diorama which is in the southeastern part of the monument.

Nice place to start your walking tour of Yogjakarta. The miniature model gives you a very clear perspective of where Yogjakarta city is.

The locals simply call it 'Tugu' or an obelisk. It's an important focal point for the city of Yogyakarta, marking the Northerly direction. The Sultanate of Yogyakarta maintains this South to North axis as an integrating element from Parangtritis (South sea) to the Merapi mountain.

The landmark of the city. Everyone knows. No doubt at all. It's very very famous tourist destination in Jogjakarta. It located in the middle of crossing roads, not too far away from the Royal Palace of Jogjakarta. Most of the tourists were coming at night time. The ambience light was so perfect situation to had some photos during their time. For the photographer, the golden hour time & the blue hour ones could be the best time to captured. Let your shutter speed turns low & get the dramatic lights of moving cars/bikes around the corner. Well done!

(Translated by Google) Tugu Yogya was built in 1755 by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, the founder of the Yogyakarta palace which has symbolic value and is a magical line connecting the South Sea, Kraton Yogya and Mount Merapi. At the time of its inception, this building clearly depicts Manunggaling Kawula Gusti, the spirit of unity of the people and the rulers against colonialism. The spirit of unity or what is called golong gilig is clearly depicted on the monument building, the pillars are in the shape of a gilig (cylinder) and the top is in the shape of a golong (round) , until finally it was called the Golong-Gilig Monument. The existence of this monument was also a guide when Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I was doing meditation, which was facing the top of Mount Merapi. When the Tugu Jogja building was originally built, it was in the form of a cylindrical pole that tapered upwards, while the bottom part was a circular fence, while the top part was round. Initially, the height of the Golong Golong Monument was 25 meters The condition of Tugu Yogya changed completely on June 10, 1867, at which time there was a big earthquake that rocked Yogyakarta, which made the monument building collapse. The collapse of the monument due to the earthquake has made the situation in a transitional condition because the meaning of unity is completely not reflected in the monument building. In 1889, the situation of Tugu really changed, when the Dutch government renovated the entire monument building. At that time, the monument was made in a square shape with each side decorated with a kind of inscription showing who was involved in the renovation. The top of the monument is no longer round, but has a pointed cone.

Historical landmark of Yogyakarta. As a Yogyakarta icon located in the city, I think this place needs more public open spaces/green spaces surrounding. Along this pandemic, jalan P. Mangkubumi (or jalan Margo Utomo) is closed for vehicles (especially in the weekend) except bicycle.

Tugu Jogja is an icon of the city of Yogyakarta. Many people come to the monument to take pictures. the monument area is clean and comfortable. It should be noted that if you want to take pictures, you have to look at the conditions around the monument. because the monument area is in the middle of the highway.

The plaque says the monument constructed in 1756. It is a very significant monument in Yogyakarta being the end point of the line connecting 2 other building landmarks. A large plan on the granite area next to the Tugu and several plaques, also in English explain a lot more details.

The spot is an iconic spot in Yogyakarta. Many people consider a trip to Yogyakarta without seeing Tugu is not a trip to the city. It looks nicer at night with the surrounding lights. During the day, the spot and its surrounding areas look great thanks to the effort of the government to reorganize various overhead cables. All in all, it is a place to go when in Yogyakarta.

One of the most visited spots in Yogyakarta. Tugu marks an imaginary line that lies in Yogyakarta from the south (symbolizes birth) to the north, Mount Merapi (symbolizes meeting with God). Tugu itself symbolizes male genitals, in pair with panggung Krapyak that represents female genitals. Kraton/ Sultan Palace is located in the middle. Many tourists come to this place, as well as people doing sports such as running and cycling. You don't have to buy a ticket, just be careful when taking photos since the roads are really busy, even in the early morning.

  • 5/5 Rina C. 1 year ago on Google
Its not just an icon of D.I. Yogyakarta, but it also has a lot of meaning in its location, shape, and the history behind it (actually this type is a re-building type from Tugu Pal Putih shape before, (as shown on Tugu Golong Gilig on its back). Been many times to yogyakarta but never went on a visit to Tugu, until a week ago or two i finally went there and see it for my self It was within walking distance from the hostel i stayed (Front one malioboro) and along the way to Tugu, the view that i saw on my walk was alright Went there for my curiosity cause many people mention that you never go to Yogya if you never visit Tugu Well, yeah finally i went Then, was great Tugu is located at the centre of yogyakarta So if let say you stand at the Keraton's house, just walk towards malioboro, then after passing malioboro you'll reach Tugu As i mentioned earlier that Tugu is near from everywhere at the central of Yogyakarta so yes, it's all within walking distance to where ever historical touristy places you want to visit around Yogyakarta
