The Fukushima Nuclear Plant is not generally open to public but this tour is provided by the tour operator with the special permission by Tokyo Electric Power Company. We visited the plant site accompanied by the TEPCO employee without protective clothing for the radiation level is relatively lower in 95% of the whole site and we closely watched the reactors which is under the procedures of decommissioning that is expected to continue for decades. On the second day, the tour headed to surrounding towns that have been and some of them are still unable to return and live in. A couple of local residents told us their own experiences in 10 years after the earthquake, tsunami and evacuation. The tour guide, Fumito is familiar with the locals as well as every road in the towns where no one lives in with destroyed houses and buildings left there as they have been since the day when the disaster hit. This tour provides us special experiences that we would never be able to do visiting there by ourselves.

This tour is a unique experience to understand the disaster and the current situation in Fukushima much better. The Fukushima tour is much more than just a tour to „contaminated area“. We got to talk to people who survived the tsunami, people who came back and built their businesses/communities and people who stayed and dedicated their life to make people aware what happened during the disaster. It is a great tour with a lot of information. You are always equipped with your own Geigencounter, so that you always know how much radiation is around you. I highly recommend this 2-day tour.

The Japan Wonder Travel tour was very organized and insightful. They had an itinerary laid out for us and made all our traveling easy. There was no problem with communication as the guides all spoke English as well as Japanese. On our way there, we were encouraged to get to know each other and be a team which I thought was very nice since I was alone. We were given a Geiger counter(a device to measure the exposure to radiation) which in my opinion, made me feel safe as this was my main concern about going to Fukushima. The guides were very knowledgeable about all the places we went, happily answered all our questions and even shared their own experiences with the group! Not only did I leave feeling educated about facts, but after seeing the actual evacuated houses etc, it made me appreciate my life and want to help spread the word about Fukushima. In conclusion, I highly reccomend this tour to my friends, family and those reading this. Seeing Fukushima with my own eyes was definitely a life changing experience.

I strongly recommend this tour if you're seeking an enjoyable way to discover the stories of Fukushima's coastal area. Booking this tour for my first visit was a fantastic decision – delving into the history of Futaba, Tomioka, and Okuma through the narratives of local residents provided a depth of understanding I wouldn't have gained on my own. The experience was a perfect blend of informative storytelling and engaging activities, from strawberry picking to dining at the TEPCO cafeteria. Our night at J Village hotel offered unique soccer-themed souvenirs and a fascinating visit to a soccer shrine, making it a memorable stay. For those interested in Fukushima's stories and the towns' revitalization efforts, this tour, with insights directly from the local people, comes highly recommended.

I was so inspired by what I learned from this tour. We visited local people and listened to their stories, and we could see what Fukushima is now. Also, we learned the system of the power plants, how did the disaster happen, and what preparation does the Japanese government do for the future. And I’m really grateful to our guide Yoko who was very considerate and well organized, she showed her knowledge and her great translation skill helped us easier to understand, どうもありがとうございます!! I highly recommend this Fukushima tour, you won’t be regret to join it.

I joined 2-day tour in September 2019. I joined with 12 other people along with 2 guides. The guidance was so interesting and helpful to understand the real situation of today and how big the disaster was in that thousands of people had to evacuate immediately after the explosion and hundreds of people died because of the tsunami. We got a chance to meet a couple of locals ( a resident of tamioka-town, a cowman, and a farmer who grows flowers in greenhouses). They shared their experiences about the incident day and the current situations. It took 6-years to realize to the lady of tamioka-town that she has lost everything and her town is never going to be the same as it used to be. A single cowman is taking care of hundreds of cows and a Farmer returned to Fukushima to regrow the flowers that he used to. We also visited the J-village that is the national training center for football and we were lucky enough to get just a glimpse of the Argentina national football team. This tour was so insightful and had an eye-opening experience about the damage that happened to Fukushima, and, how they recovered and rebuilding it with greater aspirations. Fukushima is totally safe to visit and they also provide a Geiger counter to measure the radiation level. I totally recommend this tour to have a completely different perspective about Fukushima.

Such a unique experience that I would recommend to those wanting to get a true look into how the 2011 events affected the local area. I felt completely safe the entire time. The guide was knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions we had. The trip had a packed schedule, but without feeling rushed. It was wonderful to interact with locals and have the change to support their ventures and local businesses. I will definitely be coming back to the area in the future!

This tour is a must do for those who want to explore Fukushima area. I was very interested on going to this area in Japan, but it is still very difficult to move around. The thour was perfect not only because we learnt what happened during and after the disaster, but also because you have the opportunity to know how the area is being recovered. The highest point of the trip is that you are introduced to some of the residents, and also to one of the workers who was in the reactor of Fukushima plant. Their testimony were spechless. All the time there's somebody translating everything in English for your comprehension.

I enjoyed this tour in January 2024 and recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about Fukushima! In the years since the tragic events in 2011, many people have come to have had a negative impression when thinking about Fukushima. For many, the only time they may have ever heard about this large prefecture is in relation to the damage caused by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. But if you visit today, you can see a far more positive story. Communities rebuilding, people preserving and celebrating local history, and new businesses opening. If you want to better understand both sides of the recent story of Fukushima, I highly recommend this tour. I learned a lot about the events which occurred in 2011 and the contamination which eventuated. I was able to speak with people who have moved back into the rehabilitated areas, both locals returning home and new residents who have chosen to be a part of the new community. I also was able to speak with one of the managers who was in the Daiichi plant in 2011 and learned a lot about the events which occurred. Finally we also enjoyed some of the local foods, like fresh strawberries. The guide was fantastic and the hotel we stayed in was very comfortable. Everything was explained to me in English, so there were no language problems. I enjoyed it a lot!

I overall really liked the tour. I think it is unique and I would do it again in a heartbeat because I know it contributes to the local community. I don’t think many people abroad know or can understand what the country and especially Fukushima prefecture has gone through since 2011 till recent years. At the same time, it also felt full of hope seeing how the current community came together from all over the country and abroad and dedicated their entire time to reviving the towns which have been affected the most. I also think it’s very special to meet someone who was in charge of the site of Fukushima Daiichi power plant during those hard moments. Listening to his story was very emotional. We also learned about the technology behind the power plant and what exactly caused the disaster and the reasoning behind it which was quite interesting. I feel the insights and experience I had during this trip could not be replaced by any other information found online.

It was a fascinating and worthwhile educational experience to go to the Fukushima Exclusion Zone and learn about the history, fallout, and reconstruction of the affected areas and the perspective of residents and other entities within the prefecture. Our Guide Yoko-San was absolutely lovely, personable, and highly knowledgeable. Yoko-San encouraged us to reflect on our experience of the event while providing context to how the events of 3/11 rocked the nation and how the events still resonate today 12 years later. Her personal account and in-depth knowledge of the area presented an excellent and well-rounded account of not just the exclusion zone but of Fukushima prefecture in general. She also was extremely flexible and had our best interests in mind, creating additional bathroom breaks and switching part of the tour to an on-bus tour when it became apparent that it was too hot to embark on a walking portion of Futaba town. The itinerary also provided multiple insights to how the disaster unfolded, how the clean-up process undertaken by TEPCO occurred, the repercussions and resettlement of the affected areas of Fukushima prefecture, and most importantly multiple perspectives on the impact and intended response the disaster had on locals and japan as whole. Overall if you're interested in gaining in-depth knowledge of such a critical historical event, this is your tour. I wish I could have done the two-day version to have had a closer view of the actual Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant!

Worth a visit. People tend to think that Fukushima is unapproachable due to high radiation, but radiation levels in most areas of Fukushima are at the same level as those in Tokyo. We can hear directly from the local people about the situation at that time and their current life, and see the current situation of the town, which is continuously changing for reconstruction. Actually seeing it with your own eyes is completely different from seeing it in pictures. Also, although the areas affected by the disaster have a strong impression of being places where sad things happened, reconstruction is gradually progressing, and there is hope for the future.

Valuable tour! Seeing is believing. I closely saw the very plant in which 4,000 people are working very hard to decommission it safely taking 40 years or more and the affected areas revitalizing but still have lots of ex-residents who cannot return. We in Tokyo area, who solely used the electricity from this plant, must recognize these facts and think more about its solution and the future energy of Japan and the world.

I highly rate this tour! The experience at Fukushima Daiichi was phenomenal and meeting and engaging with locals that experienced the events in 2011 was unforgettable. Learning about how the area was impacted and is recovering from the tsunami was also extremely enlightening. To top it off, our tour guide - Fumi - was exceptional and exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend to anyone travelling in Japan.

This has been a very memorable journey, and even though 12 years have passed, the impact of the disaster still lingers. Many people are still working hard on rebuilding, and hope that you can participate in this journey and support the local residents.

A very insightful tour with personal stories from people who experienced the disaster first-hand. We visited several location directly hit by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and came through areas that are still being decontaminated. We were also able to monitor the radiation levels during the tour with the Geiger counters they provided. All in all very impressive hearing about the people who got away just in time before the tsunami would have swept them away, or a farmer who decided to go against the government's orders and continued to feed his cattle in spite of the nuclear fallout.

It was a very interesting tour, with great people and we met some very interesting locals who answered all our questions about this complicated region. But the hope is there! I did not expect so much emotion. Now, I really want to go there regularly to find out what is happening to the people we have met and to see the fairly rapid evolution of cleaning and recovery. I love the region of Fukushima and I hope that the name of Fukushima will once again return the image of its beautiful landscapes, its delicious local cuisine and its welcoming people. The 2 guides were perfect (easy to understand English, perfect for a frenchman like me), they love their work and we also had fun moments. I really recommend this tour because it will be impossible to do it by yourself.

The tour is definitely an hit for people that wish to see a different Japan, outside the postcards attractions. It is also interesting to better understand what happened in 2011, both for the Tsunami and its collateral effects. The tour changed my mind about the contamination zone as reported in the press abroad and set in the common belief. in fact, i could not expect that close to the Fukushima-Daiichi power plant, on the sea side, the radiation is so low. More than an area, the radiation nowadays concerns only some spots. Therefore, i find the tour very informative and enlightening.

I attended the Japan Wonder Travel's "Fukushima 2 Day Tour - Meet Those Who Experienced Disaster". I highly recommend visiting the museums and local sites in the coastal area of Fukushima and engaging with the local residents. Fukushima is currently at a pivotal moment and offers an unprecedent opportunity to see the long-lasting impact of natural and man-made disasters on the environment, energy usage, culture, and history.

Highly recommend this tour if you want to have fun and learn about the stories of the coastal area of Fukushima! I’m glad I booked a tour for my first ever trip to Fukushima, as I got to learn about the history of Futaba, Tomioka and Okuma towns in depth by listening to the stories of the town people. I don’t think I would’ve learned so much if I had gone on my own. At the same time this tour had fun activities like going strawberry picking, eating at the cafeteria where TEPCO employees go to. We stayed at J Village hotel for the night. I highly recommend checking out the souvenir store as it has many Fukushima and Tohoku region items. The hotel has many soccer themed souvenirs and items all around as it is next to a stadium, and even a soccer shrine! I highly recommend this tour if you want to know about the stories of Fukushima and efforts to revitalize the towns directly from the towns people.

it was a great experience to visit Fukushima coastal area where the nuclear disaster hit due to the 311 earthquake in 2011. it was a tour that i have never imagined how it could be. it is hard to imagine a disaster and how it could affect out lives until you go there. it is informative to learn how and what exactly happened on March 11, 2011 there. The interaction with local residents have made the picture more vivid. the trip was meanwhile inspiring while seeing more and more people moving back including young, foreign, and new residents devoting their career and lives there to rebuild Fukushima.

My visit to Fukushima left a profound impression. Through direct conversations with former personnel from the nuclear power plant and interactions with residents in Tomioka, Okuma, and Futaba towns, I was able to witness the real situation on the ground. Engaging with the local community allowed me to hear their voices firsthand and share in their emotions and concerns, providing a more tangible understanding of the challenges and aspirations related to the region's recovery. On the other hand, I also witnessed the strong determination and unity of the local people, feeling a positive energy towards rebuilding. This experience went beyond mere tourism, becoming a deep human story and a platform for empathy.

Great trip if you are interested in knowing a bit about the disaster. We were able to get different opinions and to see how life is coming back to the area step by step. The trip felt safe, since we were carrying a geiger counter, and very touching at times because we got to see and hear some stories of how people in the area were affected by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. It also feels like a way to support the local community to return back to normality. Definitely recommended!
