From the bottom of the road which leads up the hill, I took a shepherds path through the grass and trees that eventually leads to the top of the hill. You’re actually rewarded with access to ruins that our outside of the tourist area and much better views of the surrounding area; however, there is a big fence into the offical area so you have to be nimble enough to squeeze underneath it otherwise you have to walk the whole way back down the hill and back up the road to gain access. Very magical place

The view of the surrounding city is nice, but the ruins themselves are in bad shape. There is not much that remains. And the property hasn't been taken care of very well. There are literally hundreds of artifacts piles up behind the building. It's very disappointing.

Amazing to see so much history. To know that the Romans Emperors have been there is owesome. And even more interesting to see the ruins of the small houses that date from even before the Romans period.

The museum was closed so that was a huge bummer, otherwise the site was enjoyable to walk around. Security needs to be increased as kids and adults were happily walking over and through the ruins of this majestic site.

We started our visit in Carthage by the district of Punic Byrsa which was a walled citadel dominated the city below. Today, only the ruins remain such as the massive foundations and fragments of columns that give us an idea of how impressive was the citadel. Since the Carthage National Museum was closed, we did not have the chance to see the collection of objects found on the site. However, we went to visit the Acropolium, which is the old Saint Louis Cathedral. Visit my Instagram (kelledstyle) and my blog for more pictures and info ;-)

There isn't much left of it, but then again, that's why they're called ruins, I suppose. The basin for the aqueduct is half intact. The letdown here is that the museum is currently closed, and will be for some time, at least until 2023 from what I was told.

Great place to visit. You should definitely get a guide that will walk you through and explain the whole history. Looking at the ruins with the active city in the background is a sure way to put things into perspective. 100% would go there again!

(Translated by Google) "Carthage must be destroyed" - a famous phrase by Mark Portia Cato which he ended every speech in the Roman Senate. The ruins of Carthage are not very impressive in size, but still a long history is interesting and felt.

Very little left here. A few strategically placed (broken) statues and pillars, and some old walls. The museum we closed, meaning there was about 15 minutes worth of things to see here.

Very beautiful place with lots of history to see and feel. Not crowded and hot but we went off-season in April. Took a private driver to show all the sites. Worth it.

I would give it a 4/5 * there is not much left of it, if you go with a local guide as we did it is okey, but alone is not worth it. The scenery is beautiful the view is great. But there are some broken statues rocks laying there nothing wow to be honest. It is really hot. Outside you can buy souvenirs desert roses.

Had a good time walking around the site, you can purchase the ticket at the entrance and enter the other 9 sites of Carthage with it. The site has a nice view of the city, and you can explore it within 1-2 hours.

  • 3/5 JonPaul W. 4 years ago on Google • 30 reviews
This site is actually awesome, but it lacks investment. The road up is through a suburb and looks pretty dodgy near the top. There are a handful of janky shops who's owners lack any sort of honesty or integrity. People who may be unfamiliar with this type of business should avoid them. The museum was closed, so the best pieces were not viewable. This needs to be regulated and operated better by the state as it could be a much better source of income and jobs. Additionally, google maps shows road going through trees and people's houses. This made navigation more trial and error that direct.

so beautiful to see the city from the top of the hill!! explore the museum of Carthage while you’re here. it’s low-key and outdoors. the open air, kind of disorganized fashion actually gives a clearer sense of these artifacts and allows you to see them as they are: ruins of Carthage.

This was not the best place to see ancient Roman ruins. I was excited to see Carthage and learn about the history of this place, however, Tunis needs to put more energy behind curating this site. The museum felt lacking and the site in general could have been more well presented. Luckily it’s inexpensive to get in, 45 minutes to an hour is plenty of time to see everything.

(Translated by Google) Centuries ago, Byrs Hill was the nucleus and center of the city-KARTAGINA, which we associate with history lessons with brave HANNIBAL, the Punic Wars and elephants that took part in them. The CARTAGINA story is long and turbulent. The city was founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC A few centuries later, the city became the capital of one of the ancient empires also called CARTAGINA. Currently, Carthage is a city of 20,000, located in the suburbs of Tunis. From Byrsa Hill there is a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the Mediterranean Sea shimmering in the distance. The historical value of the monuments of ancient KARTAGINA is huge, which is why it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today, the Gothic Cathedral of St. George is a beautiful decoration of Byrs Hill. Ludwika, built by the French at the end of the 9th century and the Carthage Museum in which exhibits from Phoenician times were collected.

(Translated by Google) Byrsa is a hill which today houses the site of the National Museum of Carthage and Saint Louis Cathedral and belongs to the archaeological site of Carthage in Tunisia. The hill, present from the earliest days of the Punic city according to written sources and foundation accounts whose heroine is Elissa-Dido, was probably the site of the citadel which constituted the last reduction of the Carthaginians during the Third War Punic. In Roman times, the place was occupied by vast public buildings after a considerable redevelopment of the natural space which was adapted to the urban planning project of the Emperor Augustus. After a long abandonment, the site is reoccupied on the summit plateau by new constructions for religious purposes, in the colonial context of the 19th century, mainly a cathedral and a seminary of the white fathers, whose objective is both apostolic and archaeological . This seminar shelters the product of the excavations carried out in Carthage and still hosts the national museum of Carthage. A chapel dedicated to the French king Louis IX, who died in Tunis in 1270, occupied part of the summit for a century (1850-1950). The hill is now a complete museum space, with museums (archaeological museum and old cathedral) and an outdoor vestiges area. In a space steeped in history, a return to the pre-Roman past is possible following the work carried out as part of Unesco's international campaign and despite the curse of Cato the Elder. Indeed, the site, in addition to the museum and the neo-Byzantine cathedral now disused, essentially presents visitors with the vestiges of a district of the Punic city during the Hellenistic period. However, recent studies have highlighted the important and exceptional developments of what was considered to be the center of the Roman colony, even if the remains are not up to what existed.
