The Zwinger is a palatial complex with gardens in Dresden, Germany. Designed by architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, it is one of the most important buildings of the Baroque period in Germany. Along with the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger is the most famous architectural monument of Dresden. The name "Zwinger" goes back to the name used in the Middle Ages for a fortress part between the outer and inner fortress walls, even though the Zwinger no longer had a function corresponding to the name at the start of construction. The Zwinger was built in 1709 as an orangery and garden as well as a representative festival area. Its richly decorated pavilions and the galleries lined with balustrades, figures and vases testify to the splendor during the reign of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and elected King of Poland. In the original conception of the elector, the Zwinger was the forecourt of a new castle that would take up the area between it and the Elbe; therefore, the Zwinger remained undeveloped on the Elbe side (provisionally closed with a wall). The plans for a new castle were abandoned after the death of Augustus the Strong, and with the departure from the Baroque period, the Zwinger initially lost importance. It was only over a century later that the architect Gottfried Semper completed it with the Semper Gallery towards the Elbe. The building was mostly destroyed by the carpet bombing raids of 13–15 February 1945. The art collection had been previously evacuated, however. Reconstruction, supported by the Soviet military administration, began in 1945; parts of the restored complex were opened to the public in 1951. By 1963 the Zwinger had largely been restored to its pre-war state.

The Zwinger complex is incomprehensible until you’ve visited! You have no idea how grand it is until you’re there. We visited the grounds and the Old Masters Picture Gallery. Even though the grounds are getting worked on, the architecture is impressive enough to appreciate its grandeur. We really enjoyed the gallery as well.

Visited on weekdays, not crowded so it was a good walk around the building. Nice garden with interesting baroque architecture. However, a large part of it is still undergoing some constructions.

Breathtaking and amazing palace. Even though I have been here countless times, this palace never ceases to impress me. If you visit Dresden, this place is definitely a must-see. It is free of charge to look around the building. (Unfortunately it’s under construction at the moment).

The main attraction in Dresden. On of the most beautiful palaces in Europe. A lot of spots to make many beautiful photos. The regular price of enter to the gallery is 12 euro. If you are a student and have a student's ticket(It does not matter international or national. I had a national student card on national language), you will pay 9 euro. The ticket includes not only enter to the gallery, but also enters to several other expositions on the territory of the palace.

Palace has a wonderful porcelain exhibition (open Friday, Saturday, Sunday only). The exhibition contains Chinese and Japanese porcelain with colorful ornaments, as well as European porcelain. The exhibition is full with incredible porcelain figures and statues. Zwinger palace itself is totally worth visiting. (Translated by Google) Pre-pandemic review. All of Dresden is a beautiful city. The amount of effort and work to restore the city (after carpet raids during the war) evokes admiration and respect. The whole old town is full of objects that the camera lens will love. It takes a long, long time to learn a little bit of the history of this city. I have been several times and each time I discovered new, beautiful places. Although I am not a fan of visiting "old stones" anymore, Dresden is one of the few cities to which people like to come back. (Original) Opinia sprzed pandemii. Całe Drezno to przepiękne miasto. Polecam.

(Translated by Google) The famous architectural ensemble of Dresden - the Zwinger, executed in the Baroque style, was built in 1709 under Augustus the Strong, and even then became one of the main attractions of the city. The Zwinger is decorated with unique sculptures made by different masters of that era. In those years, the complex was surrounded by wooden houses; it was the place where the Saxon nobility met during tournaments and ceremonies. In the period from 1710 to 1719 the architect Peppelmann, by order of the Elector August the Strong, built the Zwinger from sandstone. The pavilions and galleries on the side of the city walls were once greenhouses, and the gilded crown that adorns the complex is perhaps the most interesting element in the city, it is most often photographed. The building of the complex is decorated with statues of the heroes of ancient Greek myths; there are fountains next to the pavilion. In some halls of the palace today there are museums, here you can see a collection of porcelain, which is considered one of the richest in the world. Of great interest is the armory, where costumes and weapons are kept. The Dresden Picture Gallery is also noteworthy, its building was built by the architect Semper in 1847-1854. There are canvases by masters from the Renaissance to the Baroque, there is even Raphael's "Sistine Madonna".

The Zwinger is a building complex with gardens in Dresden. The total work of art of architecture, sculpture and painting, built under the direction of the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser, is one of the most important buildings of the Baroque era and, along with the Frauenkirche, is the most famous architectural monument in Dresden. Its name Zwinger goes back to the name used in the Middle Ages for a part of the fortress between the outer and inner fortress walls, although the Zwinger no longer fulfilled a function corresponding to its name when construction began. The Zwinger was built from 1709 as an orangery and garden as well as a representative festival area. Its richly decorated pavilions and the galleries lined with balustrades, figures and vases bear witness to the magnificence during the reign of Elector Friedrich August I (also known as "August the Strong") and his claim to power. In the original conception of the elector, the Zwinger was intended as the forecourt of a new palace, which should take the place up to the Elbe; therefore the kennel on the Elbe side initially remained undeveloped (provisionally closed with a wall). The plans for a new palace were given up after the death of Augustus the Strong, and with the departure from the Baroque era, the Zwinger lost its importance. Only over a century later did the architect Gottfried Semper complete it with the Sempergalerie facing the Elbe. The Sempergalerie, which opened in 1855, was one of the most important German museum projects of the 19th century and enabled the expansion of the use of the Zwinger as a museum complex, which has grown under the influences of the times since the 18th century. The air raids on Dresden on February 13 and 14, 1945 hit the Zwinger hard and resulted in extensive destruction. Since it was rebuilt in the 1950s and 1960s, the Zwinger has housed the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Mathematical-Physical Salon and the Porcelain Collection. The original purpose as an orangery, garden and representative festival area has taken a back seat; the latter, however, continues to be cultivated with the performance of music and theater events.

(Translated by Google) I liked it very much. Indescribable beauty. I agree with those who call it the most beautiful architectural complex in Germany. For some reason, in the courtyard, a rag pavilion in the form of a hemisphere was placed in the middle, and some of the pavilions were fenced off, but maybe this is even for the best, otherwise I would not have been able to leave this wonderful place at all. The Zwinger is located near the Elbe embankment, next to the complex are the Dresden Opera House and the Royal Residence Castle. This neighborhood is more than logical - after all, the Zwinger was originally conceived as a park area, a greenhouse for citrus fruits that are outlandish for Saxony. The idea to create the Zwinger belongs to the Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong (he not only ordered the construction and financed it, but also sketched the plan of this complex with his own hand), and they began to build it in 1709. It is interesting that in fact at the same time, in 1711, they began to build Peterhof in distant Russia, and our Peter I himself also developed a plan for this residence. Both rulers were inspired by Versailles, but each turned out to be different in the end) The complexes stylistically overlap, although, no doubt, each is interesting and good in its own way. You remember Peterhof looking at the local fountains. Some of them even work)) Although, the main water attraction - the Bath of Nymphs - was not working at the time of our visit. The nymphs did not deign to swim ... I had to take pictures like this, imagining how beautiful the water would play here ... And also admire the nymphs that adorn the walls of this cozy place. Finding the Bath of Nymphs is quite difficult, it is hidden behind the French Pavilion, this plan helped us to find it (the bath on it is marked with the number 5). BUT this lan was the only one to help you navigate. Perhaps this can be called a drawback of the Zwinger - there are no pointers in it. It seems that I have read what is where, but the pointers in place would have helped to navigate faster. Another place that attracts the eyes of all visitors to the Zwinger (and you don't need to look for it for a long time !!) is the Crown Gate, built in 1712. They are considered one of the symbols of the complex. The upward-looking columns are crowned with a huge crown of Poland (after all, Augustus the Strong was not only the elector of Saxony, he was also able to become the king of Poland) Another nod to Augustus the Strong is the statue of Hercules, who holds the globe on his shoulders (the statue is on the roof of the Bell Pavilion). Flatterers-contemporaries called Augustus "Saxon Hercules")) I think that further it is possible not to continue Initially, the Zwinger was made of wood, but even before the death of Augustus the Strong, it was rebuilt in stone. The work was supervised by the architect Peppelmann, under his leadership, three of the four sides were built that bound the courtyard of the complex. And the fourth side - the building of the Dresden Art Gallery - was built more than a century later (1847-55) according to the project of the German architect Semper. The building was built in the neo-Renaissance style, but it successfully complemented the baroque architecture of the existing pavilions and created the very image of the Zwinger that we enjoy today. Б

(Translated by Google) A visit to the Zwinger is always an experience ... if you want to look at the Zwinger from above with a pram or wheelchair, there is a somewhat steep path between the Zwinger and the Semperoper ... a signposting would be good ... on Sunday was only On the side opposite the carillon you can access the stairs ... what is definitely missing is a public toilet (Original) ein Besuch im Zwinger ist immer ein Erlebnis... wenn man mit Kinderwagen oder Rolli den Zwinger von oben betrachten möchte befindet sich ein etwas steiler Weg zwischen dem Zwinger und der Semperoper... eine Ausschilderung dazu wäre gut... am Sonntag war nur auf der Seite gegenüber vom Glockenspiel der Aufgang über die Treppe möglich... was fehlt ist definitiv eine öffentliche Toilette

Perfect place and perfect experience for all the visitors, especially for the ones who love mixed style building, with an accent on the gothic one. There are many details in it that also caught my attention, but the entrance is definitely something special. Date taken: April 2014.

One of the most popular tourist attraction in Dresden. Close to Theatplast tram/bus stop. The building looks very beautiful and well-maintained. There were some constructions that make the access to some spots in the area are limited. You can find many restaurants around this area too.

A spectacular historical place. So for the history lover, it is a must. There are many things including museums and a lot of tremendous statuses. The area took me back in those days hundreds of years ago.

I have visited Zwinger 5 years ago and it was beautiful, with its gardens, grass and fountains. Right now it is a huge construction site with closed entrances, limited access and poorly marked directions for tourists. If you plan to visit, better wait 2 years, then it should be beautiful again. However, Old Masters gallery is still worth seeing.

This palatial complex with garden dates from the 18th century. Along with the Frauenkirche are the two most famous architectural monuments in Dresden. If you walk from the Main Station you can reach it in about 15-20 minutes.

Strongly recommend to get a guide (e.g. free walking tour) as the palace is huge and many interesting stories about it. There are so many small little details you may miss out without a good guide. There is a construction going on, so now may not be the best time to visit.

It’s unbeliveable that how gorgeous this palace is. If you’re in Dresden and haven’t seen here yet, it would be such a loss. Transporting is easy and not complicated here, also not that crowded (at least I haven’t seen much people around), so it’s easy to get here. Highly recommended.

You can walk around the complex for free. The architecture is stunning, each building has its purpose. One or two are also a museum and the tour guide told us that it would take us around 2 hours to visit everything. Unfortunately, the centre of the building is under construction since they found some ancient Roman excavations and the archaeologists aren't allowing them to reconstruct anything until they finish with exploring.

Beautiful baroque palace, but unfortunately, the garden was closed due to the works. We took a stroll around the pala e and entered the terrace with a geeat view of the whole Dresden old town. We did not enter the gallery.

Unfortunately, during our visit, the courtyard was being renovated - with the entire thing having been dug up. The buildings are still impressive and the architecture is interesting. It's a huge building with multiply attractions. The place is a combination of a baroque palace, museums, an art gallery, a park, a terrace, with fountains, stairs sculptures. A beautiful place to discover, learn and relax.. An absolute must see in Dresden!

The work in the courtyard will take a while to finish but to us the lack of signage to get into the three exhibitions open wasted 30 minutes of our day and the rude woman at the Zwinger Experience was another negative. The exhibitions we saw were impressive.

Beautiful The whole museum is beautiful, whether it is on the inside or outside, the architecture and the collection will not disappoint you ! We took tickets for the porcelain exhibition and the gallery and didn't have enough time to visit everything unfortunately... But it was definitely worth it !

Very beautiful baroque historical place. Beautiful view, garden, lake. Good place for spending time with the family, friends or just to find a bench and spend time with yourself . And it’s a perfect place for photo session . We went there when it was reconstruction’s works . Exciting to see that next time when they will finish renovations. If you’re planning to visit Dresden it’s a must have place to visit.

I really enjoyed Zwinger in Dresden😍 It is enormous art complex. You can walk around and take pictures for free. There are some renovations inside the yard, so in some time it will be even more magnificent! And there are some museums and galleries inside the complex.

Great museum with lots of porcelain pieces. However be aware that there are two separate exhibitions, one on the left side of the staircase and one on the right side. The entry fee was only 6 euros. It is however mandatory to use a locker for your coat and backpack.
