👍👍 A little castle in the beautiful countryside. Small entrance / gift shop with a very informative and helpful staff member. There are plenty of information boards inside and layouts of the rooms. We spent 30-40 minutes here. Free parking for english heritage members, small charge otherwise.

👍👍 Built within the perimeter of the former Roman fort of Lavatrae, between 1170 and 1174 on the orders of Henry II. The castle went into decline and was largely dismantled after the English Civil War, leaving the Keep that can be seen today. Although just a shell, it is still an inspiring building....

👍👍 The refurbishment has really gone well. The craft market set the tone with loads of bargains to be had. Life of Pie, the pies were excellent and very well priced

👍 Lovely little cafe with beautiful planting out on the terrace/patio area. Clean toilets. Little band of merry men started up just as we were leaving but we listened to 1 song.

👍👍 A great walk around the Deer Park and along the river bank. The building is interesting (you just walk round the edges) and the park land is beautiful.
