The owner of the shop and the man who showed us the exhibition whilst explaining the history behind the pipes that were exhibited, were extremely welcoming and kind. We learned a lot of new information about all the different kind of pipes, the history behind each and every one, and how culture has influenced the material, size, shape and the overall look of the pipe. The museum is located in an old, but very well-kept guesthouse near the city centre, which actually used to be the house of the man who owns the broad collection of pipes, the largest known pipe collection in Europe. The experience, with its uniqueness, was unlike in any other museum and it would remain as a great memory of Amsterdam. I would like to express my thankfulness to the people who work in the museum for keeping the house and the collection in such a good conditions and for helping us explore the wide variety of pipes, and learning about their history. One suggestion that I have is to maybe put a larger sign infront of the entrance, because if it wasn't Google Maps, it would have been a bit hard for us to find exactly where the place is. In short, the pipe museum is definetly worth visiting, so if you travel to Amsterdam, give it a go!

This place had so much more to see than expected! The history of the craftsmanship of all the different types of pipes was so interesting. The guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. This museum is great for something unique to see instead of the other same history and art museums. It was also in one of the historic canal houses. You probably won't find another museum like this anywhere else!

One of my favorite museum experiences! I thought I’d just be walking around on my own looking at pipes, but they actually gave a guided tour of the 1st floor of this old house and this one of a kind pipe collection, going into details of the history, materials, manufacturing, and countries of origin. The guide also had a very calming voice, this tour would make a great unintentional ASMR video.

We were given a personal tour, and got to know the history of pipe smoking. The guide is quite knowledgeable, we were quite amused with all the items on display. The place is not big, we spent around 45 minutes there.

I went here over a year ago. It was a memorable experience. I passed the museum recently and felt I still had to leave a review. The owner is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about pipes and the history thereof. At the time, my girlfriend and I got a (private) tour and saw the many unique and precious pipes. I have visited most of the museums in Amsterdam and I still feel this one belongs among the best (experiences).

I really recommend visiting this museum when you're in Amsterdam. You get a tour with your ticket, so you don't end up wandering around like in other museums - instead you get a in-depth look into the pipe history. The guide is very knowledgeable - he knew the answers to all our questions, even if they weren't about pipes.

Definitely a hidden gem, an amazing place with an abundant, most diverse, stunning, and bizarre collection of worldwide pipes. The tour guide is knowledgeable and amiable and his guide was super great! His walkthrough tour blew my mind about pipe and its relation to world history, colonization and globalization. Would recommend anyone to pay this place a visit!!!

A really worth going gem i found in the center area! It's in a beautiful canal house, the private collection is so amazing! Super nice guide shows you the history of pipe and tobacco, i found it unexpectedly interesting as a non smoker. You can also get a cute Dutch clay pipe after the tour, which will be a very special gift from the NL :)

We ended up in this museum at the end of August by mistake (long story), but really glad we did. A very unique and fascinating insight into many cultures over the last couple of hundred of years through the lens of pipes. Who knew that pipes were the postcards of their day! Because the museum is small you are guided around by an extremely knowledgeable and fascinating gentleman - no question was unanswered! Great museum. Well worth a visit.

The collection is great but one of the guys was absolutely rude and obnoxious. I came on a city pass and had no money on me, he demanded 2,5 euros additional charge. I apologized for not being able to pay so he refused to let me in. I did explain that citypass didn't provide information about additional fees but the guy was rude and aggressive beyond limits. His colleague did show me the museum but prohibit taking fotos and refused to explain anything. I do understand the desire to get more money but I am surprised people being so short sighted about the reputation. Had he been nice and understanding I would have been happy to leave a glorious review but I felt offended and insulted by the rudeness and bullying. I did pay for the tickets through city pass. And was not informed about additional fees. So not a pleasant experience and poor business decision on the behalf of a museum because I did want to come back to buy a pipe as a present for my father in law. So clearly 2.5 euro was more important to the museum than courtesy and sharing the experience. I would have been happy to pay had I been informed and had any money on me. But such behavior is unacceptable. Poor petty man capable of abusing a female solo traveller . Bravo, I hope it made you feel better about yourself

Step away from the chaos outside into cosy and calming atmosphere of this museum. It's just like sitting on your favourite place to smoke a pipe. Museum feels more like home than a museum, with friendly and knowledgeable hosts showing you their collection. The museum is also pipe shop offering variety of pipes that matches the collection. It was hard to resist buying just one pipe.

Immaculate collection of pipes! Ben guided us through the fascinating history of pipes and pipe-making. Apart from the countless beautiful pipes, the museum itself is inside a beautiful 350 year old home. Highly recommended

We discovered this museum by chance and were really amazed by it as we didn’t expect that two non-smokers with no previous interest in pipes would be entertained as much as we were. It mesmerized us what a rich and diverse culture and history revolves around pipes. We were given a small private tour through the collection of pipes that spans across a couple of centuries. During the tour we learned so many new things about archaeology, culture, art and history and we could see how they influenced shape, size and material of the pipes throughout the centuries. It was a pleasure that the gent who gave us the tour was so passionate about the topic. All in all, I would highly recommend to pay this museum a visit.

Interesting place, with one mans personal collection of pipes on display. There are no markings or writing of the pieces, however the personal tour by the staff provides plenty of information.

This was just an absolutely delightful and enlightening experience. I'm a pipe smoker myself and I have a great interest in history. If you share any of these two traits as well I highly recommend visiting this museum. It is not huge by any means, but it's packed to the brim with information and stories that you won't be able to find on Wikipedia. The people responsible are interested and passionate about the subject matter and were able to answer every single question I had in detail. A fantastic experience. Thank you.

Highly recommendedπŸ‘πŸ» Even if I don't smoke, I found interesting the visit of the Pipe Museum. The guide was precious; he made the visit worth it! Dear greetings from Deruta, Italy

Must-see in Amsterdam. This is the only pipe museum in the world, it's not funded by tobacco companies. The guide knows everything about pipes, about painting the pipes and even about Dutch architecture!

They have a little exposition of a private collection of pipes that has been built for more that 57 years. You will have a personal guide who will tell you all the stories behind each pipe they have. A 45 min. visit that is basically master class and he will kindly answer every question that you have

Great little museum! Such an awesome collection, housed in a house from the 1600s. The guide was very knowledgeable and walked us through the history of pipes and the beautiful designs from various cultures. Great experience!

It is a small museum with charm : You get a private guided tour with the entry (you have to make a reservation per email first for it, because of Corona), and it is really worth it - the guide was nice and took time to explain us through the history of tobacco/pipe, he can speak Dutch/German/English. The museum itself is a small charming old Dutch house (even if you are not interested on pipe/tobacco, the house architecture/interior itself would amaze you). I was there to accompany my friend (who is a pipe smoker), but the visit was interesting for me and I definitely learned more about history of pipe :)

Lovely and unexpected experience to be tried while in Amsterdam. The museum is small but it is well worth it. The guide gave us a walk through the pipe history, which I can definitely say was way more fascinating than I initially expected. If you want to visit an unconventional exhibit, this is the place to go.

Incredible experience!! This was one of my favorite experiences in all of Amsterdam. We were given a private tour of their collection of pipes spanning from 500bc till the 20th century. The hosts were super friendly and we learned so much from their expertise even though we don’t smoke. They are a small private collection so go support them as we bounce back from covid! (Included on many cards such as iamsterdam)

Really enjoyed the visit! A big thanks to the guide who took the time to explain the history to us. The exhibition is surprisingly large and mixed. Overall, a pleasant and insightful experience, I would highly recommend it to everyone!

This museum is such an amazing underrated gem. You get a private tour with a very knowledgeable guide who walks you through the fascinating history of pipe making, explaining all about the different materials and decorations. Most of the pipes on display are absolute works of art. Give it a try while in Amsterdam!

  • 5/5 Michael A. 2 years ago on Google
Unlike most other Amsterdam museums, you won't get an audio guide for the tour. Instead, a staff member will give you a personal tour of the various pipe collections and explain the history of each piece to you. It's a lot less crowded than other museums, and definitely worth a visit if you already have the museumkaart/iamsterdam card. The tour itself was very informative and the staff were very friendly.

The pipe museum was a very interesting visit! The Iamsterdam card was accepted there and we got a private tour. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the various pipes and the eras from which they came. He took us on a history tour with pipes, chronologically from the advent of the pipe to the highly artistic ,carved, and decorated pipes of the times. Our guide was very open to all of our questions regarding the pipes and their history. It was an incredible experience for those that love history and have an interest in pipes. I would highly recommend a visit to this lovely little museum.

Really interesting place to visit. We just happened to stop by and didn't know what to expect, but the guys that work there are very knowledgable and they give you a personal tour of the extensive pipe collection, which shows the evolution of pipes through the centuries and from all over the world. Truly fascinating even for a non-smoker! The building is also worth seeing as it is absolutely beautiful (17th century, I believe). Definitely worth a visit.

10/10 experience Ben gave us an amazing experience with a personalised, spoken tour with nothing but his own knowledge, providing such an insight into how pipe smoking and smoking in general affects cultures all around the world in such similar but different ways

Museum was bigger than I expected, and we had a wonderful time with a knowledgeable and engaging guide. They also have a shop underneath a museum in case you are inspired about all this new pipe related info.
