Whoa, like seriously. If you need a museum to visit after the big art museums you need to go here, it's super well put together to explore the history of Amsterdam and how it was constructed, built, designed and maintained from a swamp village to modern times. It addresses the dark history of Dutch colonialism and slavery as part of the history, and it's very informative on why things are like the way they continue to be in the city. Really good audio tour, with cool rooms full of visual effects, a living dollhouse, a room full of sand to demonstrate canal building, and more. Super neat.

One of the best museums in Amsterdam. Yes it is a bit warm inside without the AC but definitely a must visit especially if you are in the Architecture/urban planning field. Very well organized!

If you want to learn more about the city and important facts of the canals this museum is a must. It is not busy, very cozy and you need like around 1 hour. If you are spending some time in the Jordaan area, this is a good add to your day.

Absolutely fascinating museum! Th experience was super interactive and really engaging. The audio guide provided a fascinating history to the development of the canals and the presentations in each room were so interesting. I love that each room ran to a timer so you could follow the story at a good pace while staying engaged. Very well thought out and presented!

Super good museum! Learning history about Amsterdam and the canals. It’s also good for children, too! My daughters are 7 and 8, they learned a lot this afternoon. They love playing the quiz there. The audio guide is also complete and thoughtful. There are plenty of languages can be chosen. We will definitely come back again!

I was so impressed by this museum. It is so well made and interactive. You have an audio guide and you go from rooms to rooms where a new part of the story is told. You can learn a lot about the history of Amsterdam. I specifically liked the doll house where you can watch inside and see details. Wished the tour was longer! But if you want to learn more about the history of the city then it’s the right museum.

This museum is a pleasant surprise. It's not very big, and not very well known, but it is very well done, and well worth a visit. It tells the story of how the canals in Amsterdam were developed and evolved to its current state. Many of the exhibits use advanced lighting, projection, and even holographic techniques to make the story come to life. Even if you are not interested in the history of the Amsterdam canals, It is still a rather fun museum to visit for the storing telling techniques and the use of modern immersive technologies. This was recommended to me as a favorite from a local resident. So I would make the same recommendation to you. And I wouldn't be surprised it become one of your favorite as well.

Entry: €15 This was a fantastically interesting history on the history of the Canals but the city as a whole. It's done using mixed media and a 45 minute audio tour in any language you can understand. Each room was gorgeously well made and well worth your time, an essential stop if it's your first time in Amsterdam.

A must-see museum: interactive, interesting, immersive, didactical, that explains in an entertaining yet clear way how the canals of Amsterdam came to existence. I loved this museum, it's a jewel, and recommend it to everyone! 🥰

Its a short visit to the museum where you will learn how Amsterdam was developed into current state and the importance of the canals (interesting facts). There's a beautiful garden behind the museum to enjoy the sun and breeze.

Through multimedia displays, hands-on activities, and informative displays, visitors can learn about the construction, function, and significance of Amsterdam's canals. The exhibits showcase the impressive engineering and urban planning that went into creating the city's extensive canal network, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The museum also offers insights into how they shaped the daily life of Amsterdam's residents over the centuries. Enjoyed my visit here and will visit again! Also the museum is included in the Dutch Museum Card so free entry for museum card holders!

Interesting and engaging exhibit about the canals construction. Its rather short with 45 min so great also for kids and really well done! Afterwards, there is free time to explore the garden and the contemporary exhibit about maintenance of the quaies... I loved the quiet garden.. its very rare to see these canal gardens! Definitely recommend to anyone who wants to know more about the history of Amsterdam.

Tucked away at one of the quieter streets, this museum is an easy miss but it’s a must see! It showcases the urban planning and development of Amsterdam from the 16th century to present day. The museum is quite small but very well done - it’s an engaging self-guided tour that is interactive and informative. Walked away with a greater appreciation for the city of Amsterdam.

This museum is also an immersive experience. It's suggested by our hotel. Super fun. There are so many windows to peek into. The fun part is to peek into these mini windows. This is a great way to learn the history of Amsterdam. Highly recommended.

The main thing I liked about the museum is the downstairs story of the house. And the second room in black walls with small houses drawn at the edge. The talking is too much. It’s an Audio guided tour so you listen too many details

The Grachten-Museum or Museum of the Canals is a nice and very entertaining place. Here you can learn how the city of Amsterdam got it's layout and how it was built. The rooms are interactive and I think also kids will enjoy the whole tour

The museum is very interactive and creative with presenting the history of the canals of Amsterdam! And it has the hidden gem — the garden on the backyard. It’s a magnificent place you don’t want to miss.

With the multimedia tour included in the admission price, this is a very cool experience. I learned a lot and would definitely recommend going to this museum and learning about the history and construction of the canals and Amsterdam. Especially interesting for those who are engineering or history-minded!!

What a wonderful way to learn how the canals of Amsterdam were created, in such a creative and modern way we enjoyed the tour very much. The building is beautiful and we were able to visit the gardens to get a taste of a real Amsterdam house as it was in the 17th century

The museum was recommended by one of our resident friends. Given the low hype of the museum, we were not sure but in the end decided to give it a try. It was a good decision. We were pleasantly surprised by the audio-visual tour. The graphics, animation, projection on model city were all brilliantly done. The story of how the Amsterdam city grew up is told beautifully using interactive animations. We learnt a lot about the city and think it's a shame this museum does not feature more prominently on tour guides. Must visit and highly recommended.

Overall I enjoyed this museum, when you enter you can wander the rooms on the ground floor until the next audio tour starts, my wait was around 5mins. In the downstairs rooms the fireplaces are beautiful but most of the images are blown up prints, which feels a bit cheap. The audio tour (which is in multiple languages is great) you basically go room by room with using your audio guide to learn about the history of canals, Amsterdam and the house itself. Overall I would say it took around 45mins, it was enjoyable but a bit pricey at €15 per adult.

Great museum / educational-experience-centre about the history & development of Amsterdam canals and city. The tour is really nice and a can't be missed. They take you on a exciting and interactive way thru how all came about. Live in Amsterdam for more that 30 years and this little hidden gem was a pleasant surprise!!

This is a really good museum for adults and kids with decent attention spans. It's one up from the ground floor, so by ready for steps. Each room provides information about Amsterdam and it's history, with an emphasis on the canals. Very well presented.

While it might not be a must-visit museum in town, if you’re staying long enough and would like to understand how Amsterdam has developed into the city it is today, the journey won’t take more than 1 hour! Personally find it worth visiting.

[visited in December 2023, paid full entry price of EUR 16.50] Nice audio-visual presentation of the very inspiring subject that is the Amsterdam urban development history, focused on the old canals area, taking you through 5 rooms. Three other rooms are used for (1) a temporary exhibition (at the time of writing this, a few contemporary stained glass works), (2) a few words and depictions of three more remarkable examples from the long list of families who inhabited this somptuos house over the centuries, (3) an empty room with a view to the garden and covered in period wallpaper and a contemporary painted ceiling. The overall experience is brief (45mins) and lacking depth, which may prompt some to take issue with the price point - particularly if full fare is paid.

Good short tour explaining history of the canals in Amsterdam. Very immersive and audio tour guides on hand in different languages. Guided tours are every 15/30 minutes and groups are small.

This place is a must-visit if you are ever in Amsterdam. Located in a gorgeous house on the canal, it takes you through an A to Z journey of how the city’s canals came to be. I must add that this is probably the best audio visual guided museum i have ever been to. Highly engaging storytelling that takes you through different eras of the city. The temporary exhibition over there was excellent— it had The Girl with a Pearl Earring in it. I believe it will be there until October if I am not mistaken. Added bonus: you get to see what the inside of these houses look like! ⭐️

Amazing museum!! For both tourists or who lives in Amsterdam. You can learn about the canals and story of the city, and its dynamic and modern at the same time. Friendly staff.

Good and informative tour. I like the way the information is delivered via the different rooms. The house is historical as well so you get to see those elements. I wish there was just a little bit more, but not bad for a 45 min tour.

What a nice surprise! Absolutely worthwhile. Not sure about the ground floor where we looked around until our tour started. At least you get an idea about the rooms and the garden in the back. And the tour itself was fantastic!!! Must do when interested a bit in city development and canal building. So nicely done with audio and video. Also my visitors from abroad where totally happy. Big smiles everywhere! Plus the hosts were super friendly.

Enjoyable visit. The 'main event' is the audiovisual tour that was much more interesting than I had expected. Lasts about 25 mins. Apart from that, it's an opportunity to see the inside of one of the houses on the canals, but nothing spectacular. Don't forget to look at the garden from inside, even though it's probably not open to visit. Friendly people; informal vibe. The only downside is that it's a bit pricey at 15 EUR.

A seemingly little known museum in Amsterdam, this is a very fun place especially the room with the doll house. The projections are all very immersive, informative and aesthetically pleasing.

This museum gives an excellent history of Amsterdam, the canal houses and how it all came to be developed. The audio and visual is excellent along with the construction models. The holographics in the model of the canal house are amazing. Highly recommend visiting this museum. The tour is in "groups" so that you are at the "beginning" of each "animation"

Very fantastic first stop for us and our 7 year old after getting settled in our hotel. Engaging presentations of the history of the city, but chill enough for jet lagged brains. Audio tours available in many different languages, both the Chinese and English versions were very good.

Such a worthy museum! Explains the origins and growth of Amsterdam, with every room nicely curated. Loved it. They also have free audio guides in many languages
