Very nice museum with some sections having an audio guided tour. I saw some Rembrandt in there which was nice. I like the elevator feature (takes you to 3 floors of the museum) though I noticed most people still chose to go by the stairs. The gold and silverware (chalices, altar decorations, and candle holders, etc.) were amazing. I’m glad I stumbled upon the museum first before attending the [English] mass at 12:30 at the Catharijne Cathedral.

Interesting museum! Loved the visit, especially the relics of St. Eusebius (his tongue can be seen there). Check ArnhemLife for more info on Arnhem.

This is a beautiful medium sized museum. Usually it will take 2-3 hours if you go into details a bit. It nicely illustrates the Christianity in Netherlands. Unfortunately ALL the labels are in Dutch without English translation! There is an English audio headset that you can borrow from the front desk but it only has very few items in English and does not include all the labels. Regardless, you can still enjoy the collection. I was there at the time of a temporary exhibition about Maarten Luther, there was no audio translation but a text book to follow the description, which was helpful.

Museum is great for lovers of christian art. You will learn a lot through out the 3 floors. They offer free audio guides in english. Not all of the displayed art has signs in english. When we visited the rooms were really cold so I wouldn't recommend wearing just a tank top. The staff was very very nice.

One silent and humbly light place, within the heart of the lively and optimistic, beautiful city of Utrecht. The ancient monastry hosts - amongst a lot of further breathtaking iconic and precious works - the shining, eminent dome treasure - impressive, representative and partly slightly morbid pieces of art, as well as craft. The museum's concept is rather subtle and profoundly demanding: Spiritually and historically vibrant phenomena are symbolised and materialised in (mostly historical) works of art which have to be deciphered by the visitors themselves. The bare texts (more or less directly attached to the objects, and provided by the well done guide book) have to be filled with spirit and meaning by us, the spectators. A contemplative place of atmosphere, vibrance and intellectual challenge. Encouraging a wider range of 'learners' would possibly be a great idea. That is still done by the personnel (though not necessarily by the admittance fee).

We went to visit the (temporary) Gospel exhibition. This exhibition has been carefully curated and shows tells the history of gospel. It focusses mainly on a few "heroes" of gospel, whose stories are told very thoroughly, but sometimes that takes away from the story high-over and makes that recent history is a bit more overlooked. The museum as a whole has a clear theme: it focusses on Christian art and history. There is so much to read, view and listen to (even the Gospel exhibition alone could take you hours). When visiting Catharijneconvent, make sure you take the time and decide on forehand what you want to see, as not to become overwhelmed. It's a good museum in their niche topic, but it is quite niche and signage and routing is not always very clear and many texts are quite small, so audience information could be a little more inclusive.

Beautiful & historical location, found in the city center of Utrecht. We had lunch here which was very good, after we visited the museum. The pieces all revolve around Christianity, with some very nice pieces. The collection is a bit one sided but what they have is very well maintained. The top floor had an large exhibit revolving around the 60's which was sort of interesting, but a bit long. From the crowd probably only really interesting if you lived in that time. All in all well worth your money, for the location alone is worth the visit!

If you are into medieval art and Christian artifacts this is the place to be. It has a nice permanent collection spanning from soms Rembrandt works to some very early Christian era statues. The fact that they have a permanent collection also means that there isn't that much variation a second time around if you would decide to visit it again in the near future. I think the treasure chamber was my favorite of the collection.

introductions and descriptions are in dutch, generally. more english or other languages are needed. anyway, no 1 religious museum in the netherlands.

  • 3/5 Bono de V. 2 years ago on Google
There were some cool pieces here. I was especially surprised by the treasure room and amount of old paintings. Was not a big fan of the more modern installations though. The building is beautiful but it's too bad you can't see too much of it when you're walking around. If you're in the vicinity i would recommend visiting it, but not going out of your way.

(Translated by Google) Nice collection. The Miracles exhibition is a bit of a mixed bag but will appeal and amaze many people. One point of criticism: the information has been placed in awkward places, often very low. There could be improvement in that ?? (Original) Mooie collectie. De tentoonstelling Wonderen is een beetje een allegaartje maar zal veel mensen aanspreken en verwonderen. Enig puntje van kritiek: de informatie is op knullige plekken aangebracht, vaak erg laag. Very interesting museum! Interesting artifacts, relics, paintings and religious items. Regardless of your religious inclinations, this is a worthwhile stop. The permanent exhibits are only described in Dutch, but the rotating exhibit (‘Relics’ - when I attended) had great descriptions in English.

Fantastic exposition about wonders, from Egyptian artifacts to David Bowie, lots of arts from 15-17 century, well made exhibition! Loved the modern art part and how it played with the historical art!

Would highly recommend. Highlights for me were the unusual collection of wooden statues from c.13th to 15th century. Also the treasury with richly jewelled bibles and alter prices from 12th century onwards. Museum set in picturesque historic red brick building around a quiet courtyard with impressive adjoining church. Interesting galley about reforming the church from the 1960s onwards, on the upper floor.

Some nice medieval codices. There's little historical integrity left in the interior of the cloister. The special exhibit on the 1960s and Christianity was surprisingly good. Don't miss the short documentary on a nun who spent 5 years in the former Dutch New Guinea, 1955-1961. Free English language audio guide, but only of select items in the permanent collection.

  • 3/5 Sabri K. 1 year ago on Google
Audio guide is provided but most of the content is in Dutch. It is a shame because you can see there is a lot of content in the museum as well

  • 3/5 Juanita P. 1 year ago on Google
We grossly underestimated the size of the exhibitions. If you are planning on visiting, make sure you allow yourself a few hours to go through it. Although the pieces in their collection are exceptional this museum is definitely aimed at a specific audience.

  • 5/5 Bart E. 1 year ago on Google
A museum dedicated to christian Catholic art is perhaps not the most obvious choice, but I must admit that the artefacts are of superior quality and the museum itself brings them even more into the picture. And then you haven't seen the temporary exhibition yet... we were lucky as 'Gospel' was splendid. You receive headphones, which allow you to enjoy at your own speed the numerous videos and audio fragments. You go along a journey from the songs originated from slavery up to the rock and roll. Top!

If you are interested in the art of the Middle Ages, it is a beautiful museum to visit. The selection of perfectly kept ancient art is well presented, in a modern and roomy environment. The museum is much larger than what you can guess from the outside.

  • 2/5 Algernon B. 8 months ago on Google
be prepared! you pay entry for the museum, then an extra price for the antwerp exhibition. The trick they pull is having to pay more for a catalogue if you want to know anything about the exhibits. Also, the audio guide I had seemed to be for a different museum, so probably not bother with that. The staff are not welcoming and pretty much unhelpful. The cashier had me wait til she finished reading the article in her magazine before taking ny payments. This spoils an otherwise rrasonable exhibition.

(Translated by Google) Body language: the title does not cover the load as far as I am concerned. "Looking at Medieval religious art" would have been fairer. After the exhibition about the bible belt, expected more vision and a broader perspective, eg a place for contemporary art, non-religious art, visual developments in society, for example. Furthermore, it does not seem very friendly that only codes are mentioned with the works. I don't have my phone with me in a museum room.

(Translated by Google) The temporary exhibition "all miracles" is fun and amazing! Due to corona measures, when we left the building, we were not allowed to go out through the main entrance, but through a "back exit". We ended up in a very different street, no idea where we were. How do we get back to our bikes at the main entrance? An indication (sign or folder) would be nice. Points for improvement for the Catharijneconvent? 😏 (Original) De tijdelijke tentoonstelling "allemaal wonderen" is leuk en verwonderlijk!
