The island of Marken, not far from Amsterdam, is an idyllic gem with lovely wooden houses, one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the Netherlands and delicious restaurants.

Great place to dive into the Dutch culture and explore traditions. A museum - village, where you can see what real Holland is about. You can get there by bus in just 30 min from Amsterdam Central Station. There are a couple of cafés there, restaurant and gift shops. Amazing view on the Ijselmeer with many sail yachts on a sunny day. Definatley a do!

Wonderfully cute and totally idyllic, the little houses near the water. The streets between the houses are very narrow, some of them are beautifully decorated in front of the houses. Pure nature with sheep, ducks, horses... etc.. Just relax and forget about everyday life for a bit.

Cute small museum about the traditional clothing and life on the island Marken. They have a small movie (in English and Dutch) about the island that is very interesting. There is also a room that resembles an old house. There are many models with old traditional clothes. The museum can be visited in an hour. Also, the museum was managed by some sweet old ladies when we visited.

The island of Marken is a dream and in places you have the feeling of having traveled backwards in time. Beautiful old houses and very well maintained.

Great history museum with working windmills. Please be respectful when visiting. This is a working and living museum. Which means people live in the actual homes you see. People still work inside those windmills too. We enjoyed the tour very much.

Interesting movie about the history of Marken. The video explains why it was not swallowed up by the sea by dikes and later mounds. There are still 8 inhabited mounds on the island. The museum has different displays of traditional clothes for different occasions. They have a collection of paintings and items about the history of Marken. Worth paying a visit to this museum run by volunteers.

Informative small museum about life in the past in Marken. After an introductory film you can view the beautiful costumes and some beautifully decorated rooms. Located in the Kerkbuurt, which in itself also exudes an atmosphere of that time.

Interesting to see how people lived at the turn of the century but pleased to have been given a free entrance ticket as one small viewing room was not worth paying €4.50!!

In the past, fishermen used hemp nets, unlike today, polyester, which breaks down into microplastics, we hope that a rethink will take place soon / sustainable fishing!

For 3 euros, this is quite decent. They play a video of the history of Marken, and on display they have cutlery, dolls dressed up in traditional outfits for various events and a nice look around a Marken house (which is museum is housed in) of course.

Marken is a tiny fishermen village in the north of Netherlands. Old wooden house painted in black and green and why only these two colors, well there are multiple stories where locals believe to be true. Marken is not a museum town, with a population of 1700, people actually live there and have maintained its historical buildings. You will also come across multiple bridges which are named after the queen of Netherlands.

Drive to Marken, either by ferry from Volendam (2 people with bikes €21) or by road from Monnickendam. It is worth it! Marken is not a museum village! You live there.👍

Interesting museum showing a very nice video on the history of Marken. There is also a great view of the life that the local people had; their clothes, homes, and items.

A very small but yet interesting museum. The lady's inside really kind and proud of their tradition. The island is small sometimes walking the streets you can get into someone yard. Overall a nice experience.

A mini museum about the history of Marken with lots of collections of paintings and family utensils.I don't find the wax figures particularly interesting. But I'm glad they have a short film in English. You can also use your museum card there.

Great little Museeum focused on clothing and items. Friendly staff offered details that we lost, such as that the Museeum was built by moving and joining 3 separate houses. Good info-movie in several languages offered as well.

👍 "The Wave" is a meaningful monument that should stimulate reflection. We were there, looked at it and rested. Anyone who “circles” the harbor will find it.
