What you see is a combination of the different stages and shapes this building had through centuries. You'll need about forty minutes for the visit. Best time first thing in the morning before it gets too hot and crowded. Entrance fee is Q 20, to be paid at the pier or directly at the castle. In the first case, keep the paper until you get to the castle. There is a public park where you can relax and swim but lots of hookers trying to sell you boat trips.

Looks small but I walked around inside for well over an hour. Didn't bother with the guide because my Spanish sucks but I'm sure it'd be interesting! Entry fee is 75Q, well worth it and includes a park with areas to swim. Particularly enjoyed the FCKIN MAN cannon :D

75 quetzals for foreigners to enter the park and fort. You can walk there from the main road, which will take about 30 minutes each way from the bridge. Family orientated place where you can spend the afternoon. The fort is interesting to discover all the rooms. Swimming is permitted in some areas of the park. There are a few vendors selling drinks and souvenirs. Worth the money.

The Castillo de San Felipe is located within a national park, everyone must pay a fee of Q25 for citizens and Q75 for foreigners. It is open from 8:00 through 17:00 hours. There is no parking lot in the park so you'll have to use one of the parkings around, besides you'll have to walk approximately 5 minutes from the entrance to arrive to the castle. The restrooms are really far from the the picnic area and the castle, besides those restrooms do not have water service installed, you need to go outside and grab the water to flush the restroom you used! Certainly it is not a handicap friendly place. Also you'll find a cemetery along the way to get to the castle.

Very fun and crazy to think of such a long history. You can see in some places where walls were repaired on top of earlier walls. Super fun to imagine British pirate ships sailing in and the battles.

Absolutely stunning 16th century building. Very deceiving, appears small in the outside but has endless rooms and passages once your inside. Walkways are pretty narrow and low.

Restored fort originally built in 1644. Right at the edge of lake Izabal. Beautiful place. There I a limit on the amount of people being let in curing COVID.

An important historical structure. Attacked by Pirates and a major defense point. Staff is great. There might be ghosts in the prison, apart from that it is super cool.

Nice Spanish Fort. Well maintained park but could use a more formal gift shop. The castle lacks lighting which could make the signs inside a little more legible. Didn’t hire the tour guide maybe because I wasn’t sure there was one. Still a good place to spend a few bucks and the afternoon.

(Translated by Google) It is a beautiful castle, you imagine several stories of princesses, waiting for someone to rescue her, or all the fights and wars that that castle saw go by, it makes your imagination fly, in addition to being near the water makes it even more beautiful (Original) Es un castillo hermoso, te imaginas varias historias de princesas , esperando a que alguien la rescate, o de todo las peleas y guerras que vio pasar ese castillo, hace volar tu imaginación, además de estar cerca del agua lo hace aun mas hermoso

Smaller than what I had expected but all in all really nice place for the views and to walk around

  • 1/5 AGG 2 years ago on Google
Fort was interesting and nice to see but the security guards at the entrance were really pushy and unprofessional. One guard tried to make us pay to just walk on the grounds (grounds are free only Fort entrence you pay for) we didn’t have our Guatemala DPI only Guate passports and that set them off saying that we would be charged the foreigner rate. Then they tried to pat us down going it like we were through an airport. The men they must higher must be uneducated homeless men who work these security jobs. The fort was really expensive to enter and it’s not very much to see. Other than that it’s nice to walk around with the family

Very nice. Small Castillo with in a generous park. Good restaurant on the premises. Recommended

  • 2/5 Florian B. 1 year ago on Google
The castle is in general nice. But as foreign citizen the entrance fee is 75 Quetztales which is 3 times what locals pay and half of the entrance fee to Tikal! Therefore you don't get any information inside the castle. Not one written text in English to explain what you are actually seeing. Very disappointing.

Incredibly beautiful place to visit. Go into the castle, spend time at the park, jump into the warm river water, take a boat ride, eat some good food, or maybe you're just interested in some beautiful pictures, either way this is truly a wonderful place to visit

  • 5/5 R S. 11 months ago on Google
One of the most beautiful experiences. There's a lot of things to do. Once you pay to go inside, you can visit the castle and after finishing the tour, you can stay and rent a jet ski, take a boat ride (pay extra) swim in the river, cook a bbq or eat at a restaurant and swim at the restaurant pool while your food is prepared and served. Going back to the boat tours and jet ski rental, always bargain and offer at least Q150.00 to Q100.00 less than what they are asking. Remember that they are also competing for your business and if one doesn't take what you want to pay, someone else may be willing to do it for less. Again, the place is beautiful. Next time I visit, I'll plan for a 2 day trip at this place. There are also many other things you can do in the surrounding areas like visiting amatique Bay about an hour and a half up north, or the calm beautiful beaches of the Atlantic ocean. You can also visit the garífuna town close by and enjoy a completely different cuisine. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. One last thing, we stayed at the Banana Palms hotel and enjoyed our stay there. Very good for the price. Average food, good service and beautiful views of the river.
