I visited during the brief late-March availability. The weather was good and lent itself to a fine visit. The grounds are well maintained and clean. There is plenty of open space for children to run around and burn energy, the entirety of the Fort is Baby-stroller/ wheelchair accessible with a few minor exceptions in the buildings. There exists a Cafe (closed during my visit) and well-maintained public restrooms. The Fort itself has numerous displays of Roman and ancient Germanic artifacts. The displays are narrated in both German and English. Good information, good artifacts and displays show quite well what this site (and several others in Germany) were like in appearance and operation/ purpose. I very much look forward to visiting again. The surrounding area has a full-fledged restaurant and near-limitless hiking trails. The forest has suffered somewhat from invasive beetle damage and is being "recycled" ; lots of downed trees and disrupted terrain but still quite enjoyable to hike through. PARKING can be a total nightmare; be patient and recognize that the parking area is pretty much a cul-de-sac. It terminates on the back-side of a slope and is very painful to turn around in. Try to park BEFORE the main entrance if possible.

Incredible place to have a better impression of the Roman empire extension and it's limits on the northern side of the Empire. The admission price cost €7 (on 2020) and once you are inside the fortress you are able to visit a couple of different museum and workshops from the period. Inside you also have the option to eat something and the prices are really good. I definitely recommend it for people of all ages and don't forget to walk around the fortress to see the famous limes that were built

Saalburg is the largest restored Roman Fort. It's an awesome sight to see. Built along the Limes defensive network, restored on its original foundation. Cool little gift shop outside, plenty of parking for all sized vehicles. The feeling of history you get when walking the grounds is quite inspiring. They have excellent guides and displays. The armory was closed for renovations but was expected to be opened next season. I definitely recommend this place for history enthusiasts.

Saalburg was closed due to the current Corona measures but was still lovely walking around and seeing the Roman building remains that are on the outside. Can also go for a nice walk/cycle in nature.

Brilliant Roman fort and museum. The fort is very large and and we spent a nice morning wandering round. Never realised that the Romans divided Germany down the middle.

Me, my wife and two kids ages 2 and 3 had a good time here. There's a decent amount of parking out front within a short walk to the entrance. The gift shop is small but has some good stuff in it and is also where you purchase entrance tickets. The place itself is pretty neat to see and takes a couple hours to walk around and see if you take your time. There's also a small museum inside with various artifacts from the time period and some information about the area and Saalzburg itself. There's a restaurant too, with indoor and outdoor seating and a decent selection of food and drinks. Bathrooms are located inside the gate, with no options before paying to enter. Some things have English descriptions but many do not in case yiu only know English. Overall a great place to spend a few hours, I only wish there were more pieces in the museum.

Beware! You can only purchase entry tickets by cash! No cards accepted. Very disappointed...

Love the place! Very rich in history and a lot of things were preserved. Great collection inside the museum. And so nice to roam around. And the best thing, it's not that far from Frankfurt. Maybe better if posters are in english too and not only in german.

This is a 45 minute walk from the nearest train station (also called Saalburg). The train station is not currently on Google Maps. We found it on the "rail planner" app associated with the Eurail pass. The walk from the train station is up a hill through a woods. There is good signage. The fort itself is nice. There was a lot of information in the displays. Many but not all displays had English captions as well as German. I'm glad I went, but I wouldn't recommend it for those who aren't highly interested in Roman history.

An incredible treasure of history. Unfortunately our timeline did not line up with a guided tour, but that didn't matter. Wonderful information in German and English. Incredible museum of artifacts and interactive exhibits for kids. It was wonderful to learn so much about life in this area 2000 years ago. Free parking and reasonable entrance fees for adults and kids. The Taberna was very interesting as it offered Roman cuisine and thankfully offered schnitzel and pommes for hungry kids. Excellent food and clean indoor/outdoor dining. Well worth the stop!

  • 3/5 John G. 2 years ago on Google
Very well-curated. Very cool reconstruction! More English-language descriptions would be nice. More interactive displays would be cooler, like putting on the equivalent weight Roman soldiers wore, making a souvenir like a plate or piece of jewelry; small movie theater showing short interesting loops of life back then. The restaurant serves a few meals from those days. They could sell products as well but don't. Hessenpark is also in the area and overall it was better but this site is still gem. Go! Enjoy!

  • 5/5 Svenja G. 2 years ago on Google
Very interesting and beautiful place with a castellum reconstruction according to how the Romans built it 2,000 years ago. The exposition is impressive. Many small details tell us how the Romans used to live in Germania. The Corona restrictions are easy to understand and the booking system easy to use. Barrier-free toilets and lots of green space for a picnic.

  • 1/5 Jason S. 2 years ago on Google
Closed! I would like to tell you how good it was here, but unfortunately the information about opening times online is wrong and upon our visit the place was closed! We were not the only ones, in the few minutes that we were there, 3 other families arrived and had the same problem. All stated that they had "looked online" and were surprised that it was closed. So I suggest to double check the opening times before travelling 50 minutes like we did. Very disapointing.

An historical recreation of a Roman settlement in Germany. Lots of artifacts found at this dig site. The exhibit tries to allow you walk through history. It's pretty close to Frankfurt, so if you like history and passing through the area, this may be for you.

Very in depth look at historical Roman occupation and the evodences they left behind. Great for kids. Lovely green spaces. Took one star off for sporadic English translations. Some explanations have english, some to not. While it was still amazing to see everything, it would have been great to be able to read about everything.

Travel back to the past, take history with every breathe of yours. That's happen in Saalburg. A whole reconstruction of a legionar camp base at the limes of the Roman Empire. Take at least 2 hours for yourself to visit all the exhibitions and just to walk in the ancient surranding.

  • 3/5 Elmar P. 1 year ago on Google

A very interesting place. Good, committed guides and bilingual descriptions explaining the relics on display in the museums. The public guided tour is good but short. But then, it costs just 2€ per adult. One can easily spend half a day here relaxing, walking around or simply pickniking. Recommended for those interested in Roman history as well as it's influence on (then)Germany.

A beautifully restored Roman military outpost & open air museum. Super nice costumed volunteers who explain historical context & significance. English descriptions on the signage and info material available.Very impressive. Take a walk to the Limes - the Hadrian's Wall of Germany. Bring a picnic and eat amongst the ruins of the outlying village or try recreated Roman cuisine in the onsite restaurant. Drinks, ice cream, gift shop & out door seating round it off. Worth a day visit. Will definitely go back with foreign visitors.

  • 4/5 Chris C. 5 years ago on Google
Well worth a visit- a 1 of a kind site. Ruins of a Roman fort and town in a lovely setting. Some ruins have been reconstructed to give a better idea of what the fort looked like when in use and others are "as is" but all very interesting. Nice exhibits and some that are very kid friendly- the only drawback is most of the information is only in German (but this is in Germany). Good place to come for a picnic too or enjoy a walk outside the Roman walls and in the park area outside the museum site's gates. Stop by the Taberna for a drink or a snack - seating inside & out.

  • 4/5 David B. 5 years ago on Google
This Roman fortress is a must if you are interested in local history. The museum is informative about the Roman history and relics of the area. Texts are mostly only in German. Good with children too, there are usually extra activities for them such as shooting arrows with a bow. You can find clean toilets and a restaurant inside. Area is accessible with wheelchair.

This is a such wonderful and true historic site! This is a old Roman settlement that was partly rebuilt and turned into an amazing museum. It is fun for both young and old! Inside you can learn more about the Romans and this settlement. To enter you need to pay and there is a souvenir store. You can also simply walk around the settlement and there are also old roman ruins and the limes wall. All in all this is an amazing place to visit!

(Translated by Google) The Saalburg is always worth a visit. However, when our children were young, you could walk around outside without a fence or entrance. Unfortunately this is no longer possible. Admission 7 euros for adults and 3 for children. Surprisingly delicious and fresh gastronomy at fair prices. Dogs are allowed. One euro extra for this you get a manure bag. Great exhibits on display. (Translated by Google) Interesting and nicely prepared. There is a lot to see, but the constant mask up and down when going in and out is a bit annoying, but that's due to the situation and not the sight. Especially recommended for people with dogs, because you can go in with dogs everywhere. The food there was ok, both in terms of taste and price.
