Schöne große Burg. Kostenlos spazieren gehen. Go for a walk for free. It is worth climbing the towers and admiring the panorama of the city. There is a restaurant here, but it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. I recommend it, it's worth it

(Translated by Google) Very nice view over Bamberg and the surrounding area. We recommend climbing the tower. This is an ideal starting point for hikes or for a stopover as there are enough free parking spaces. The restaurant or the beer garden invite you to linger. Dog friendly. Hiked up to the castle on 31st December. There’s a staircase leading up to the castle with a fence in front of it saying staircase blocked but there was no other way there and you could go round it. The views are amazing from all the way around the grounds. You can go up the turret and see views from other parts for free. No staff were there or appeared to be there. Also saw a few dog water bowls left around the grounds.

This castle is worth a visit while you are in Bamberg. This castle has a classic castle feel to it The tower has a great view. You can get food and drinks here and dine outside. The walk up to the castle is around 2.5 km from the old town.

(Translated by Google) According to one of the old Bamberg bedeckers, the lofty castle tower welcomes travelers. From the 10th century, the castle, at first a fortress defending the Rednitza valley, then the bishop's residence, towers over the city. It was built on the highest of Bamberg's seven hills. The first references to the fortress come from the 12th century, but archaeological research postpones the time of its construction by two centuries. In the thirteenth century, a huge 30-meter keep was erected, and in the fifteenth century, the whole was rebuilt, giving the fortress a more residential character. From 1305 to 1553 it was owned by the bishops of Bamberg. It survived the siege of the peasants' war without loss or damage. During the Second Margrave War it fell to Margrave Albrecht Alcybiades, who burned it down and devastated it. Rebuilt, it was owned by the city, which was organized by a prison within its walls. In the 18th century, part of the walls collapsed, and the entire building fell into disrepair. In 1803 it was purchased from the city by a local doctor and enthusiast of historical monuments, Dr. Wojciech Fryderyk Marcus. He rebuilt and added what he could, giving the preserved whole a slightly fairy-tale, romantic shape. For many years his dear friend, the writer E.T.A. Hoffman. The creator of "The Nutcracker" lived in the tower. After the death of Dr. Marcus, who loved this place so much that he had ordered him to be buried in it as a last resort, black clouds gathered over the castle again. This time, the Bamberg postmaster, the postmaster at the time, Antoni von Grafenstein, who founded the Altenburg association, which is still active today, took care of the monument - the oldest society for the care of monuments in Germany. It is also worth mentioning that in the 1930s, of the century, fascinated and infatuated with Nazism, the German inhabitants of Bamberg damaged the grave of Dr. Marcus due to his Jewish origin. Today, there is a restaurant in the castle, serving the famous Bamberg beer. Occasional masses are held in the restored castle chapel, and tourists are attracted to the castle mainly by its picturesque location and the magnificent panorama of the city and its surroundings. (Original) Jak podaje jeden ze starych bedekerów po Bambergu wyniosła zamkowa wieża wita podróżnych. Od X wieku zamek, zrazu twierdza broniąca doliny Rednitzy, potem rezydencja biskupia, góruje nad miastem. Zbudowano go na najwyższym z siedmiu wzgórz Bambergu. Pierwsze wzmianki źródłowe o fortalicji pochodzą z XII wieku, jednak badania archeologiczne przesuwają czas jego powstania o dwa wieki. W XIII stuleciu wzniesiono potężny 30 metrowy donżon, a w wieku XV przebudowano całość nadając ponurej zapewne fortecy bardziej rezydencjonalny charakter. Bez strat i uszczerbków przetrwał oblężenie w wojnie chłopskiej. W czasie drugiej wojny margrabiowskiej przypadł margrabiemu Albrechtowi Alcybiadesowi, który spalił go i zdewastował.

(Translated by Google) Ancient castle, located on one of the 7 hills of Bamberg, with a beautiful view of the city. Born as a refuge for the inhabitants of Bamberg in 1109, it was purchased by the Princes-Bishops around 1250, who used it as a residence. Burned entirely in 1650, restored, it was then used as a prison. In 1800 it was bought by the city doctor, who completely restored it. Today you can visit. It also houses a restaurant inside. It can also be reached by car, there is a convenient parking area near the entrance. (Translated by Google) If you want to see Bamberg and the surrounding area from a completely different perspective, you should go up to Altenburg Castle. The castle is in great condition and the restaurant is also recommended. There is also a public toilet. Here you can enjoy outside and switch off when the weather is nice. The view is amazing. Also from the tower. It is worth climbing the castle on foot. In the restaurant you can dine very well, but you can also only enjoy a coffee or other drinks. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and the prices are okay. When the weather is imperative, it is always worth staying there.

Standing high atop Bamberg's tallest hill, Altenburg Castle (Schloss Altenburg) is one of the town's most popular attractions. Dating back to the early 12th century when it was used as refuge for the townspeople, it later served as the palatial home of Bamberg's bishops. Destroyed in 1553, all that remains of the original medieval structure are parts of the surrounding wall and the 33-meter keep. An important relic from this time is the old iron basket hanging from the tower used to signal neighboring castles up to 20 kilometers away. The castle was rebuilt in the Romantic style, and highlights of a visit include its sumptuously furnished rooms and the spectacular views of the Old Town and the surrounding area. The site also boasts one of the town's most popular restaurants.

The Altenburg, one of the city's landmarks, sits enthroned on the highest of Bamberg's Seven Hills overlooking the town. The castle is mentioned for the first time in 1109, although it is likely that it was built on the spot of an earlier palisade castle. It first served as what is known in German as a "Fliehburg." This is a castle that was not regularly inhabited, but served mainly for city defense as a place where local residents could flee to in times of danger, so it was used as a refuge and fortress. In 1251, the Bamberg "Fürstbischöfe," the sovereign bishops of Bamberg, acquired the castle, so in the 14th to 16th (1305 to 1553) centuries it served as the richly furnished residence of the Bamberg bishops. It was almost completely destroyed in 1553 by the army of Albert Alcibiades, Margrave of Brandenberg-Kulmbach in the Second Margrave War. Only the 33-meter high keep from the 13th century and parts of t he curtain wall have been preserved from the medieval building stock. Afterward the castle was used as a prison for a while. An iron basket hangs on the upper part of the tower, which was used to transmit fire signals in the direction of Giechburg (near Scheßlitz), 20 kilometers across the valley away. The Altenburg was rebuilt in the age of Romanticism. In 1801, the Bamberg physician Adalbert Friedrich Marcus acquired the decaying castle and restored it from the ground up. The author E. T. A. Hoffmann, who was friends with Marcus, felt so drawn to the castle that he frequently stayed for a long time in one of the wall towers during the years 1808 to 1813. The restaurant "Hoffmannsklause" draws its name from this period. The viewing terrace offers a panoramic view of the episcopal city of Bamberg and the surrounding area. On a clear day, the view from this spot is marvelous even if you didn't go up on the tower (it was not open when we visited). You can look in to the whole city of Bamberg, and imagine how kings and knights will spend their days taking care of the business of their town.

Great place for a perfect view on Bamberg. Don't miss out on the tower... it is quite some steps, but you can see unbelivably far. The restaurant has good food and delicious beer, so you can rest for a bit before heading back all the way.

Nice and compact castle overlooking Bamberg! Located around 30 minutes walking distance from the city, this little castle offers a perfect escape from the bustling downtown of Bamberg. It is an uphill hike, passing through fields and forests, sometimes offering beautiful views of the city. If visited by car, parking is located within meters from the castle's entrance. The place was not busy at all, it serves more like a stop for cyclists and hikers as there is a nice beer garden located in the inner yard shaded by trees. The radler I got was amazing, but the cakes were disappointing, cannot judge the food as I didn't have anything to eat. Payments only in cash unfortunately. We didn't go to the castle, however it was worth it to climb the castle tower to see Bamberg and Franconian Switzerland. Entrance fee is optional however suggested at 1 EUR. Visited in July 2022.

If you are in Bamberg you should invest half an hour. Unfortunately, I did not test the locations in the castle.
