The 2004 tsunami was a tragedy that caused devestation and so much grief. Whilst on a much lesser scale I also experienced grief after paying the exorbitant admission fee to see what is essentially a Google image search and a couple of videos. I appreciate some of the money goes to charity but doing some research into the charity does not give much clarity as to how the funds are spent. The boat is great, you can see this without going in.

Not so much to see. Only few stall by the locals to claim as a memorial.

The Tsunami museum in Khao lak continues to be a draw for tourists visiting the area as interest remains strong with respect to this tragic event. I came here to see with my own eyes 1 month after the Tsunami and it was not pretty. The patrol boat that has become part of the memorial is very close to the position it came to rest when the waters receded. If you could imagine, a thick layer of mud surrounded this boat as the entire shoreline, where geography permitted, was literally a mud slick as far inland as the water penetrated. The Museum, although agreed they could have done a much better job, does provide some interesting information and video of the event and the impact it had on the community, the visitors and the families who lost loved ones during this time. Typically Thai - They have now increased the price to 300 THB per person to gain entry and apparently are donating some of the proceeds to needy families and children which seems like a worthwhile cause if the money is actually getting to them .

We just needed to visit this museum/place. To see and hear about this tragic tsunami went direct into our hearts… The cost for the entrence goes to support of the local children. The boat went 2 km deep into the land!

A good physical location to learn about the damage of the tsunami and what it had done to Khao Lak. The main area was closed for renovation unfortunately, you can still visit the park & the info boards.

A second of the 2 memorials along the coast of Phang-Nga district where most of the devastation occurred and where the majority of people perished in the Tsunami in Thailand. This is the spot where a police patrol boat that was assigned to watch over members of the Royal family was washed over 2 kilometres inland. Along with the patrol boat there is a small museum, 2 outdoor memorials a covered area with many photos taken during and after the Tsunami. These memorials had great significance for both my wife and niece as they had friends who perished and others who survived but lost everything. Please don’t be swayed by some of the negative comments about lack of maintenance this is really a place to reflect on a terrible tragedy and loss of life also to show an example of mother nature’s awesome power.

A police boat left where it was carried inland by the tsunami... a haunting reminder of the power of the ocean. The site itself is unremarkable and there was not a lot of signage/info apart from those set up by independent stall holders selling tokens to raise money for survivors and their families 🤔

I went there because it is near my hostel. However, there aren't nothing much there. But if you go there, you can read and see the 813 boat and some information.

There are 3 different parts to this whole tsunami area. The museum which charges you 300 baht to look inside a small room. The police boat (free) and a small haphazard exhibition of photos tucked away in a hut which is free but they will try and hardsell you some tourist junk. So basically go for the police boat and ignore the rest. It's just shameless profiteering off a tragedy.

The actual please with the museum seems closed. There is a visitors center from a non-profit Organisation outside of the actual place, with photos and films about the tragedy. 300TBH entry per person, which is ok. Take some time to watch the documentaries at the first floor (there is a room for English and another for German). Then go out and check out the boat, which has been thrown inside the land 2km during the first two tsunami waves. Around the corner, there is a private shack, they have some additional photos in a photo-book. Those pictures might not be suitable for all audiences, some are hard to swallow. They don’t charge, but expect that you buy some souvenir or donate.

Yo, so I totally got to check out the 813 ship that got hit by that crazy tsunami in Phang Nga, Khao Lak zone this morning. Bummer that the museum was closed, but guess what? I still snagged a pic with the 813 warship, the one that's all responsible for looking after Khun Phum Jensen's stuff. 📸🚢 #Adventures #813Ship #KhaoLakVibes

Could have done so much more with this, a Monument with the names of those affected as somewhere to go and remember them. Instead it's 4 rooms with photos and video of the survivors played on a loop. The boat outside is fairly interesting but again not enough information about it and nothing else there. It is fairly interesting but you cannot hear the TVs a and the building is basically a converted convenience store. I would give this a miss and donate directly to one of the Tsunami charities and foundations.

Educational and well-organized My heart goes out to the victims of this tragic event. Love that the entrance fee is given as charity for local kids. Took my kids around and shared some learnings with them too. Nice boat, can be seen from outside the museum.

A sobering reminder of the strength of nature. It's FREE and will give an eye-opening insight into the tragedy that happened here. We spent about 45 minutes to 1 hour here, and that was sufficient. There are a few close by cafés, shops, and taxi services.

Unfortunately the place has been let go quite a bit. Hope it's just because of Covid, but empty buildings & overgrown in places. A real shame. However a small display as you walk in with lots of photos (a lot very hard to look at with dead bodies, but you have to look at them because it's part of history and see exactly what these humble Thai people went through. Truly shocking and terrible.) A local man there who luckily survived tells his story & got the scars both externally (and internally). It's an emotional place. Worth a visit. It's free entry but you can buy souvenirs there & money goes to a Tsunami fund. They are very overpriced so hopefully the money goes in the right direction!

Great place to visit. Even if it is very simple, visit this place to honor all People died over here is à must to do. To see this boat at 2km from the beach show the strength of the tsunami. In the movie, we see the boat jist before the wave.

Moving tribute to those who died, and scary to see the power of Nature. This boat was carried a fair way inshore by the Tsunami and now stands as a memorial where it was dumped. Yet a couple of hundred metres away are easily accessible low hills - thousands could have been saved with better awareness and warning systems which now seem to be in place.

Lots of photos but feels a bit worn down. The picture on the TV on the upper floor is almost not visible and the audio is too low to hear anything. Not worth the 300 baht entrance fee. Go to the local guy behind near the boat instead, you can look at some photos for free and but a drink or a souvenir from the local shop

I’m still not sure i really found the « true » official museum (if there was one?). Honestly worst experience here so far. As you can see in the picture : what you shold do is not to come here. This is the quality of content you can expect here.

Täällä kannattaa käydä katsomassa ulkona olevat kohteet, poliisivene ja monumentin luona kuvakansioita. Menkää mielummin Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Museum, sieltä saa enemmän irti ja on ilmainen. N.25km matkaa.

  • 2/5 L B. 3 years ago on Google
This is not an official museum so it all just feels a bit run down. The posters and signs are very old and faded and there are stalls showing pictures but also selling plastic elephants. I would call this place a point of interest (to see the boat) rather than a museum.

A lot of information but really interesting. My partner and I spent the afternoon there a few weeks ago. We stayed to watch the video from start to finish up starts. I cart really say it was a great afternoon because of what happened, but I would stay pop in find out what happened

Contained a room of photos and explanation of how tsunamis occur and a video of people's accounts of what happened that morning. A navel ship which had been washed up 2km by the wave and a sculpture. There was another gazebo set up out the back with a man who had some photo albums with very graphic photos and selling souvenirs as well as asking for donations to see the photos, i got the impression he was just doing it to line his pockets but I may be wrong. He didn't seem very legitimate.

Not much to see here, but if you want to know more how much devastation the 2004 tsunami caused, you might want to visit this place.

  • 2/5 Jakub S. 2 years ago on Google
Not worth it unless you are really close. Its just a monument without deeper explanation. However you can be sure that annoying sellers are waiting for you. I wouldn't be surprised if the ship stayed there only because it was too expensive to tow it back to water (and fix it). Entrance was free of charge.

Expected to learn more about the events that lead to so many fatalities. Only thing you will be able to see is the coast guard ship which has been swept away into inlands and the memorial. No survivor accounts of events unfortunately.

Took a trip from Phuket to go and see. You can see the boat for free there is a person selling souvenirs very close to the boat has lots of pictures with lots of stories he was brilliant. The main museum was more than we were prepared to pay so can't comment.

Is this how leaders of Thailand pay respect to their dead ? This place is run down, derelict and frankly disrespectful given the magnitude of damage the 2004 tsunami caused. May the ghosts of the fallen haunt all those who are/were entrusted with maintaining this "museum".

2004 Tsunami was enormous tradegy that affected Thailand, Khao Lak was the place where majority of victims were killed. Museum itself is interesting but bit out of date with the way presenting the story. It would be great to have more abiut how Khao Lak was before the tradegy and how it was rebuld after.

  • 3/5 lynn d. 1 year ago on Google
Now. I understand the tsunami absolutely devastated the region, but warning, there are some seriously graphic images on display. Felt guilted into buying locally produced tat to 'support the victims'. I donated but I can't be sure it didn't go to the purveyors of this horror show. Some photos and a boat that had been pushed 2km inland by the wave and not much else here.

We’ve only visited the free tourist information, but there is also a general tsunami museum that you can visit. I believe everyone has seen a lot about the tsunami of 2004, but the pictures you see at the information are very, very raw and sad. The stories that you can read are heartbreaking. But it was worth a visit to learn a little bit more about it

  • 4/5 Kati T. 1 year ago on Google
A little depressing, but worth a visit. Understand how high the wave was and what it caused. The name of the monument comes from the number of the patrol ship that washed ashore 2 km from the sea.

  • 4/5 F. W. B. 1 year ago on Google
Could be in a better condition. The topic is heartbreaking and the pictures (even if they are in bad resolution and bleached) show the disaster in an impressive way. The museum is very small. It should have better financial support.
