Built in 1895 and ornately decorated by the faithful as a tribute to the Hindu goddess Uma, it serves as a spiritual center for believers. Statuettes of Hindu deities scatter the expansive interior around the altar. Uma, her son Kantha-Kumar, and Ganesh are enshrined in the innermost part. Only Brahmas and strict vegetarians are granted an audience with them during the annual Dussera festival. Legend had it that Kantha-Kumar later had an elephant head and become Ganesh, the Hindu Muse of art students.The Brahman leads homage rituals 4 times a day amidst ceremonious bells. Participants receive a red dot on their forehead and a sacred bit to taste. The Dussera is a notable festival of Silom. Even Thais and Chinese set up a dedication table to welcome Uma.Visitors have to take their shoes off and cleanse themselves before entering. Certain areas are strictly off-limit to the public.

My first time to walk in an Indian temple. I was attracted by its colorful and beautiful sculptures at the entrance and my curiosity drove me to have a visit. The staffs there were not too friendly which made me feel not too good for this experience.

It’s a South Indian architecture styled Hindu Temple built for Goddess Maha Mariamman and maintained by Tamil people in Bangkok as far as I believe because of the name given to the temple. Beautiful and vibrantly painted sculptures and arts are projected. It’s a pleasingly good visit to this temple to experience the culture of South India. But the procedure to do offerings to God is not the same followed as we do in India. Spiritual vibes guaranteed!!
