The Salt Mines (Salinas of Baní) are immense esplanades with big salt mountains that you can visit during your journey to this part of the southern Dominican Republic. Here you can see how they produce and commercialise the salt used in so many places around the world. In 1502, Columbus protected himself from the weather in Puerto Hermoso Village, which is in Las Calderas Bay, near the City of Baní. Columbus did not tell anyone about what he had found in fear of decaying this frail place. However, some of the partners, who went with him, did not keep the place secret. So, Governor Ovando thought of this place as a business, turning it into the most important salt mine of the Caribbean at that time. This salt mine is a tourist attraction that nowadays employs hundreds of people. The salt is produced in terraces, where the seawater is evaporated and gives rise to this valuable good.

(Translated by Google) A unique place. The combination of the drying ponds, with their different colours, the white of the salt and the intense blue of the sky make this place an unspeakable visual experience. (Original) Un lugar único. La combinación de las balsas de secado, con sus diferentes colores, el blanco de la sal y el intenso azul del cielo convierten a este lugar en una experiencia visual inenarrable.

Very nice, quiet and beautiful beach. A little further west, in front of Las Calderas Naval Base, iguanas lounge waiting to be fed by people passing by.

👍👍 A beautifull little escapade amongst bani, peravia. Might be a bit tricky to get there since i got a bit lost myself, but the friendly locals even offered to escort us there. Beautifull clear water and small waterfalls to jump from. Hint: try the local made "mabi" at the only store near it
