Bekal Fort is one of Kerala’s most impressive and beautifully maintained historical landmarks by ASI. 👍 Got famous after a Movie song in film (Bombay) 🎥 The entry / parking can be better managed, had to wait on the road for 20-25 minutes inching from main road to parking lot. Parking charge is Rs.40 Entry Tickets to be bought at the counter opposite to the main entry to port (Rs.25) Spread over 40 acres, it’s the largest fort in Kerala, built in the 17th century by Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty. Later, it came under the control of Tipu Sultan and the British — each era leaving its mark on the fort’s architecture and story. Prepare for long walks and inclined climbs in watch towers. Scenic views of the sea and nearby beaches and town views, worth it. There are stone benches to sit / relax. Could see drinking water taps at few places. There are couple of small shops selling ice cream, juices and water, packed chips, etc. Best part is on the west side sea viewing point (going down stairs) and watching sunset. There are places to sit and also go up to the final watch tower where the waves hit against. Around 5:45-6 the guards keep whistling to get the people out 😀 There are small sandy beach areas besides the port but access is restricted, though could see few people. Sea is rough so not recommended to venture. Overall a great place to spend few hours and take pictures 👍

A stunning fort overlooking the Laccadive sea, this location shot to fame with the song Tu hire/ Uyire from Bombay movie. Though we went around 4 pm during the rainy season,it was very hot. There is quite a bit to walk around so choose a time when the sun's heat is low. Inside there's a shop that sells juice and icecream. It is maintained well. There are toilets in the parking lot.

Bekal Fort in Kerala looks like an incredible place steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty. From what I’ve read and seen in pictures, it’s one of the largest and best-preserved forts in Kerala, with impressive laterite stone walls and unique keyhole-shaped bastions. Its location right on the Arabian Sea offers breathtaking views of the coastline, making it perfect for photography and scenic walks. I’ve also read that the fort’s design and strategic position tell the story of its importance in the 17th century as a defensive stronghold. The surrounding greenery and the rocky beach create a peaceful and picturesque environment, which seems ideal for anyone who loves history, architecture, or just wants to enjoy a serene coastal spot.

Visited Bekal Fort recently — it’s a beautiful historic place with a stunning sea view. The atmosphere is peaceful and perfect for an evening visit. The fort area is well maintained, though it can get quite hot during the day, so sunset time is best. Nearby, there’s an ANERT EV charging station, which was very convenient for charging my electric car. Food options are limited (mostly ice cream and water), but overall it’s a must-visit place in Kasaragod! 🌊🏰⚡

The nearly 400-year-old fort is built of laterite stones and showcases impressive architecture with high walls and watchtowers. It holds significant archaeological value. This fort offers a stunning sunset view, making evening the best time to visit. Entry closes at 6 PM, and visitors are cleared out from 6:15 PM onward. A cloakroom is available for storing bags until closing time. Plan to spend about two to three hours here. A road runs down along the shore, providing breathtaking views, and the fort itself offers a beautiful vantage point overlooking the beach.

Bekal Fort is a beautiful historical place and one of the best tourist spots in Kasaragod. The entry ticket is very affordable at just ₹25, which makes it accessible for everyone. The fort is well maintained, and the view of the Arabian Sea from the top is absolutely stunning. Morning and evening are the best times to visit, as the weather is pleasant and the lighting is perfect for photography and enjoying the surroundings. Walking along the fort walls with the sea breeze feels very relaxing. It is ideal for families, couples, and photography lovers. There are enough open spaces to sit and enjoy the view. However, it feels more like a one-time visit, as there isn’t much to explore beyond the fort and the views. Overall, it’s a good place to spend a peaceful hour or two and definitely worth visiting at least once if you are in Kasaragod.

Bekal Fort is a must-visit place to experience history. Best time to visit is monsoon season. I visited during the Christmas vacation on a weekday, and it was not overcrowded. Paid parking is available, and near the parking area there is an EV charging point. Close by, there is a pay-and-use toilet that is clean and odor-free; payment can be made by cash or GPay. The ticket price is ₹25 for adults, and entry is free for children under 15 years of age. Both cash and GPay are accepted. Tickets can also be booked using the QR code provided at the ticket counter. The fort gates close sharply at 6:00 PM. Inside the fort there is Sri Mukhyaparna Temple The beach view from the fort is mesmerizing. Visiting in the evening does not make one feel tired while walking around the fort. There are plenty of seats available for resting, and numerous mango trees planted throughout the fort make the surroundings lush and green. The history of Bekal Fort is displayed at the entrance gate. Inside the fort, there are two stalls selling ice cream, juice, snacks, and water bottles at reasonable prices. Outside the fort, toys and hats are also available for purchase. The fort is well maintained. The only concern was that, due to the stalls inside the fort, there were some plastic and paper wastes scattered in a few areas.

Bekal Fort (also spelled Bekel Fort) in Kasargod, Kerala is one of the most impressive and best-preserved coastal forts in India. Here are its history and key details: History Bekal Fort was built around 1650 AD by Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi (Ikkeri) dynasty. Before that, the area was under the rule of the Mahodayapuram Perumals. After the decline of the Perumal dynasty (by the 12th century), Bekal came under the Kolathiri (also called Chirakkal) rulers. The Battle of Talikota (1565) weakened the Vijayanagara Empire. The Keladi Nayakas grew in strength afterward and fortified Bekal to secure control over trade and the coastal region. Later, in 1763 AD, Hyder Ali of Mysore occupied Bekal. Under his son Tipu Sultan, the fort continued to have military significance. After Tipu Sultan’s defeat in 1799, the British East India Company took control. During colonial times, Bekal formed part of the South Canara district, and later, with the States Reorganisation Act in 1956, it became part of Kerala. Structural & Architectural Details The fort spreads over about 40 acres, making it the largest fort in Kerala. It is built of laterite stone and sits on a promontory overlooking the Arabian Sea, with almost three-quarters of its exterior walls in contact with seawater. The fort was primarily for defence; there are no palaces or grand mansions inside. Key components include: a water tank with a flight of steps a magazine for storing ammunition observation towers (one built by Tipu Sultan) offering panoramic views of the sea and surrounding towns. zig-zag entrance, trenches around the fort for defence, and strategically placed holes (“gun ports”) in the walls at different heights to allow defenders to fire on attackers at varying distances. Cultural & Present Day There is an Anjaneya (Hanuman) temple at the entrance, believed to be as old as the fort itself, and an old mosque said to have been built by Tipu Sultan nearby. In 1992, Bekal Fort was declared a special tourism area by the Government of India. Today it is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Well Maintained Monuments built by vettukallu or laterite bricks. Must visit a spot in Kasaragod. Clock room is available for keeping our luggage. Entry is 25 rupees for indian nationals. While I visit some hindu festivals are happening in the entry of the fort. We can feel the beauty of the Arabian sea from the fort.

One of the best and must visit place in the list of you're exploring northern Kerala. The beauty is immense and suits for sunset views. Get ready to spend atleast 3 hours to witness and soak in the beauty of architecture and amazing views of the Arabian ocean. Many movie shooting had taken place in this historical fort. It is interesting to note that once tippu sultan had taken over the fort as military watchtower and apparently slipped into british empire after the fall of Tippu. It is also better to add bekkal park beach in the watchlist since it is very near to the fort and neatly maintained. Though the water is not suited for swimming activity it will provide other activities like exhibition, shopping, dinning, boat ride and great environment for quality family time.

Beautiful place. I really loved the sections of the fort located at the beach, where waves could splash you anytime. (Enter, walk forward a bit, take the first right and walk . There will be a door in the wall and steps going down). Beach is really great to watch , but you cannot go down into the sand or waves. This is the best part if you are visiting during daytime,(or you have only less time or if you don't want to walk too much) since this part have lot of shade and trees. Even in evening, this side will give best sunset view, and so will be very crowded. The remaining parts of the fort will be very sunny and has almost no shade. Really beautiful to see the openings in the fort wall, giving great views of the ocean below. They distribute tickets only till 5.45pm, and people will be asked to leave from the farthest spots at 6pm. Front gate will be closed by 6.15pm. You can buy tickets online from a link displayed at ticket counter area, in case there is a queue.

Wow, the view from the top is just breathtaking Standing there with the Arabian Sea stretching endlessly, it's easy to see why this fort was built for defense The thick laterite walls and the massive watchtower tell stories of the past. It’s surprising to know that the fort has no palace or royal structures, just pure military architecture. The best part is the cool breeze that makes the climb totally worth it. One downside is that there aren’t enough shaded areas, so it can get really hot during the day. Going early or in the evening is the best way to enjoy it

Be prepared for a long walk to see around the different parts of fort. From one side it extends near to beach and morning breeze is so relaxing. There is ample parking spaces and some eateries outside fort. Fort is well maintained and clean.

Bekal Fort is a beautiful and well-maintained historical site that offers a truly refreshing experience. The entry ticket costs ₹25 per person, which feels very reasonable for the overall experience. Right at the entrance, the presence of the Mukhyaprana Temple adds a calm and spiritual touch to the visit. The fort premises are surrounded by mango trees, making the walk inside pleasant and shaded. One thing worth appreciating is the cleanliness ,the toilets were clean and well maintained, which is a big plus for visitors. The highlight, of course, is the view. The panoramic view of the sea from the fort is absolutely stunning and perfect for photos and peaceful moments. Overall, Bekal Fort is a must-visit place for history lovers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone looking to enjoy a scenic coastal experience.

Visited this fort on a Saturday evening. It is a well-maintained historical fort, and detailed information about its history is displayed at the entrance. The entry ticket costs ₹30, which can be purchased at the counter or booked online through the website mentioned near the counter. Drones are not allowed inside the premises. The place is clean and peaceful. Evening is the best time to visit, as you can witness a beautiful sunset from multiple viewpoints overlooking the scenery and the beach. The fort is entirely built with bricks, giving it a unique character. The closing time is 6:00 PM, and it is strictly followed.

A historically significant place to visit with family and friends . The whole fort is well kept except for a few bushes facing the sea . A lot of wonderful views and there is a lot to walk in the fort. There are benches available to rest and enjoy the gardens and a couple of food stalls serving snacks and pickles. There is big enough car parking space which costs 30 Rs per car along with 3 electric car charging booths. Paid washrooms are also available having clean stalls too.

Bekal Fort is a beautiful and historic place with stunning views of the Arabian Sea. The location itself is amazing, and walking along the fort walls with the sea breeze is a great experience. The fort is well preserved and offers plenty of space to walk around, relax, and take photographs. That said, there is a lot of scope for improvement. The large open areas inside the fort are not fully utilized. With better landscaping, a well-maintained garden, shaded seating areas, and more information boards, this place could become an even bigger attraction. Basic visitor facilities and better maintenance would really enhance the overall experience. Overall, Bekal Fort is definitely worth visiting for its history and sea views, but with proper planning and development, it has the potential to become a world-class heritage destination.

I recently visited Bekal Fort in Kasargod and was impressed by its cleanliness and well-maintained grounds. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful, making it perfect for a relaxing walk, especially during the cooler hours. The fort's historical significance and scenic views make it a great spot to visit for those who appreciate both. The fort's beauty and tranquility are undeniable, and it's a great destination for history buffs and those looking for a peaceful retreat. However, I did notice that some areas were being used by couples for intimate moments, which might make some visitors feel uncomfortable. This could be a consideration for families or solo travelers who might not expect such behavior. Overall, Bekal Fort is still worth a visit, as long as you're aware of the potential for some awkward encounters. With a bit more consideration for all types of visitors, it could be an even more enjoyable experience for everyone. Despite this, the fort's charm and scenic views make it a great spot to explore and unwind.

My visit to Bekal Fort was nothing short of magical. Located along the pristine coastline of Kasaragod, Kerala, this historic fort is a perfect blend of architectural grandeur, serene nature, and panoramic views of the Arabian Sea. Spread over 40 acres, Bekal Fort is one of the largest and best-preserved forts in Kerala. The moment you walk through its massive gates, you're transported into a world of history. The stone pathways, observation towers, and thick fort walls whisper stories of ancient battles and coastal watchmen. The highlight for me was standing at the edge of the fort, overlooking the vast Arabian Sea. The breeze, the sound of waves crashing against the rocks below, and the view of the sun setting over the horizon made for a truly peaceful and unforgettable moment. The fort is clean, well-maintained, and surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. There are also plenty of photo spots, especially from the watchtower which offers a 360° view of the sea and countryside.

BEKAL FORT is a 17th century fort located in KASARAGOD DISTRICT,KERALA,INDIA. The fort appears to emerge from the sea. Almost three-quarters of its exterior is in contact with water. Bekal fort was not an administrative centre and does not include any palaces or mansions. An important feature is the water-tank, magazine and the flight of steps leading to an observation tower built by Tipu Sultan.[1] Standing at the centre of the fort, this offers views of the coastline and the towns of Kanhangad, Pallikkara, Bekal, Mavval, Kottikkulam, and Uduma. The fort's zigzag entrance and surrounding trenches reveal its defensive strategy. Holes on the outer walls are designed to defend the fort effectively from naval attacks. The upper holes meant for aiming at the farthest targets; lower holes below for striking as enemy nearer and the lowest holes to attacking the enemy closest to the fort. Its solid construction resembles the Thalassery Fort and the St. Angelo Fort at Kannur built by the Dutch . Here are some interesting facts about its structure : Unique Shape: Bekal Fort is shaped like a giant keyhole, with a narrow entrance and a wide inner courtyard. Laterite Stones : The fort is built using laterite stones, which are abundant in the region. These stones are known for their durability and resistance to weathering. 15 Feet High Walls: The fort's walls are an impressive 15 feet high, providing a secure defense against invaders. The north gate is more decorative, with intricate carvings and sculptures. Well and Tank: Bekal fort has a well and a tank, which provides water for the fort's inhabitants during times if siege.
