Flagging
for
Israel
is
well
meant
but
sends
the
wrong
message:
Urging
Reconsideration
of
Support
for
Current
Israeli
regime
and
human
rights
violations
.
Supporting
just
one
side
of
the
conflict
without
at
least
considering
civilian
victims
on
both
sides
and
the
desperate
situation
for
years
in
Gaza
seems
inappropriate.
Especially
with
the
far-right
regime
led
by
Prime
Minister
Netanyahu,
announcing
and
performing
actions
in
clear
violation
of
international
law
without
regard
for
human
rights.
While
it
is
crucial
to
unequivocally
condemn
the
violence
and
barbarism
that
Hamas
has
unleashed
on
Israel,
it
is
equally
important
to
critically
evaluate
the
actions
of
the
Israeli
government.
Netanyahu's
recent
alliance
with
far-right,
pro-settler
parties,
trying
to
undermine
the
supreme
court
and
advocating
for
the
annexation
of
Palestinian
territories
raises
serious
ethical
and
legal
questions.
The
Israeli
government
policies
are
de
facto
like
apartheid.
Eg
consider
the
minister
in
the
Israeli
government
clearly
states
the
rights
jewish
people
are
more
important
when
talking
about
illegal
occupied
territories
by
extemist
settlers
(Ben-Gvir
has
been
convicted
of
incitement
to
racism,
destroying
property,
possessing
a
terrorist
organisation’s
propaganda
material
and
supporting
a
“terrorist
organisation,
thisbis
why
he
wasn’t
allowed
in
to
the
israeli
military)
Supporting
such
a
regime
could
inadvertently
legitimize
actions
that
are
in
direct
violation
of
international
humanitarian
law
and
international
human
rights
law.
For
instance,
the
use
of
white
phosphorus
in
military
operations
in
Gaza
by
the
Israeli
forces
is
considered
a
war
crime.
This,
along
with
the
Israeli
government
announced
plans
for
a
"total
siege"
,
and
to
cut
off
Gaza's
electricity,
fuel,
water,
and
food,
is
neither
responsible,
appropriate,
nor
productive.
As
the
occupying
power,
Israel
has
a
clear
obligation
under
international
law
to
ensure
the
basic
needs
of
Gaza’s
civilian
population
are
met.
The
current
actions
and
policies
of
the
Israeli
government
are
in
stark
contrast
to
this
obligation.
I
urge
you
to
reconsider
its
stance
and
instead
emphasize
support
for
the
civil
society,
including
Israeli,
Arab,
Palestinian,
and
other
minority
communities.
These
are
the
groups
that
are
most
affected
by
the
conflict
and
are
in
dire
need
of
support
and
understanding.
Supporting
Israel
is
not
like
supporting
a
football
club.
Flagging
for
Israel
in
the
current
context
sends
the
wrong
message,
legitimizing
actions
that
are
in
clear
violation
of
international
law.
I
believe
that
Humbold
University,
as
a
respected
institution,
has
a
responsibility
to
promote
peace,
justice,
and
respect
for
human
rights,
including
Palestinians.
Maybe
a
practical
approach
is
to
half
mast
a
UN
flag
or
half
mast
both
Palestinian
and
Israeli
flag
instead.
