A
special
baroque
gem
can
be
found
on
the
Kreuzberg
high
above
Bonn.
The
church
there
was
built
by
Cologne
Archbishop
Ferdinand
in
place
of
an
older
chapel
in
1627/28.
It
was
magnificently
expanded
a
good
hundred
years
later
(from
1746)
by
his
successor
Clemens
August,
who
also
commissioned
the
baroque
palaces
Falkenlust
and
Augustusburg
in
Brühl.
The
church
received
a
baroque
design
with
ceiling
paintings
by
Adam
Schöpf,
Francois
Rousseau
and
Norbert
Seifried
as
well
as
a
new
organ
in
the
rear
gallery.
Particularly
noteworthy
is
the
extension
("House
of
Pilatus")
by
the
great
builder
Balthasar
Neumann
with
the
Holy
Staircase.
In
its
rich
design,
this
building
shows
the
arrest,
condemnation
and
crucifixion
of
Jesus.
The
stairs
serve
as
a
place
of
reflection
and
contemplation
for
believers,
as
they
can
only
be
climbed
while
kneeling
and
praying.
The
entire
complex
served
as
the
seat
of
the
Servite
mendicant
order
for
a
long
time
and
had
an
eventful
history
after
secularization
in
French
times.
Today
there
is
a
church
educational
institution
there
and
guided
tours
are
offered
on
certain
dates.
