(Translated by Google) Imagine yourself in the Middle Ages ... When you drive through the kilometers of floodplains with original cattle and wild horses with lots of green, water and birds, you are already far away from civilization. Then the beautifully restored castle with walls and outbuildings appears: impressive! How nice it is in the castle varies depending on the exhibition, but don't you like it? Then you can walk for hours in the beautiful nature reserve around the castle. Very worthwhile!

A very nice place. The history behind this place is amazing. I am very much overwhelmed with the things you can learn about the castle. There is a bed and breakfast as well there and the restaurant is very good as well. I would highly recommend this place for you to visit and learn new things, especially if you're a foreigner.

It’s under construction currently. 14€ person is actually quite high. The tavern is self-service with young and not so helpful staff. The surrounding is stunning and pretty. In my humble opinion come and skip the castle and tavern might be the right choice.

Nice and relaxing visit of the castle. From the parking place you can walk to the castle and also stop near the water with a small beach. At the castle you can walk around, have drinks, a bite or have a picnic. There are kids activities which is nice. The castle to visit inside is pretty simple but there is a nice story to it.

Anazing scenery. The castle was already closed when arrived . However, the walk around the castle was one of the most beautiful! Must visit again, maybe next time will stay in the castle hotel.

Very interesting place. There is a lot to learn here because of its rich past. It gives you a really interesting look in de middle ages and the way people did things back then. The castle itself is really fun and i threshing, but there are also a lot of little places around it that are equally as interesting. Definitely suggest you go here at least once in your life if you're around. You won't regret the trip.

Great castle to spend a weekend! We took a day trip from Rotterdam. Reaching it was easy and fast. Most ferries depart from Gorimchem but they will drop you at Woudrichem if you are off season, and from there you can walk for a bit and take a motor boat that will take you almost to the castle. Prices are alright, about 2 euros each boat ride. It’s not on the website, but the castle is free for those with the museumkaart! So DON’T buy your ticket online if you have it! The castle area has a simple restaurant with some quick-Dutch-style dishes like sandwiches, soup and salads. Also some bakery items. There’s a museum where the barracks were and then you can walk all around the fortress to see other highlights like the gunpowder tower, the arsenal room and of course the castle itself. There are also other entertainment and interactive things for kids. The castle inside has most descriptions not just in Dutch but also in English. The key that you get at the entrance will also play the boxes in English. Descriptions in English are unfortunately missing on the top floors and temporary exhibitions.

Two weekends ago I visited the Loevestein Castle, also known as Slot Loevestein, with local friends from Holland. As we pulled into the parking area, you can see wild horses and other wildlife in the fields surrounding the castle. It is about a 300 meter walk from the parking area to reach the entrance to the castle and you can purchase tickets at the entrance for a self-tour or guided tour. We chose the guided tour option which was an additional twenty euros or so, but definitely well worth it. Before our guided tour, which left at a particular time, we toured the Loevestein Castle Museum. Admission is included in the price of the self-tour or guided tour. We also sat in the café at Loevestein Castle which offered self-service coffee, drinks and snacks. The guided tour was led by a tour guide and was conducted in Dutch as our group of approximately 20 people were primarily from Holland (however, inside there are placards in both English and Dutch if you take the self-tour). The guided tour took about an hour, and our guide was extremely knowledgeable as we made approximately 15 or so stops inside and around the castle. At each stop, he would spend some time explaining the history behind the castle and a lot about the famous escape from the castle of political prisoner Hugo de Groot in a wooden book box. After the tour, we explored the grounds which include the gunpowder storage area, the lookout points and an interactive shooting exercise at targets out in the field (no bullets it is all with lasers). All in all, we spent about 2.5 hours at the castle and enjoyed walking the entire grounds 360 degrees around the castle.

Fantastic historical castle with a great variety of exhibits, information and activities for all to enjoy. Definitely recommend for a visit with friends and family. Very friendly and professional staff to assist you. Parking is a short walk away from the castle but it allows you to take in the beautiful views.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful castle that certainly appeals to the imagination. Good rules about Corona. An interesting exhibition about the stored artworks and archives during the second world war which I really did not know. Also attention to war violence throughout the world. I thought this was done very well. Such a shame all that Culture that is being destroyed. The surroundings of the castle are beautiful for walking.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful castle from the outside but very bare and empty inside. For the children to follow a nice route with "key". Very friendly guides. However, my expectations of Loevestein Castle were more than I have experienced. Would have liked to see more about life itself at the castle.

Interesting historical site, free parking. You can walk around and visit the castle spending some 2.5hrs. Be aware of the sudden highway exit when you go there from A27 to Woudrichem. The surroundings are adapted to water rises of the rivers and have many birds and cows. You can also go to a camper parking place and spend times at the riverside.

Great castle, you can also reach it by foot from Woudrichem. From April to September there is a small pond for pedestrians. From the pond it less the a kilometer to the castle. Really nice option for a day trip.

Fantastic! A lovely castle with interesting history. The castle is situated in a beautiful nature area that includes the UNESCO World Heritage Water Linies. There is plenty here to see and enjoy, especially if you bring along a bicycle.

More than the castle, the location is what makes this place more attractive. The castle on a river bank adds a lot of walking space to relax and enjoy. Definitely, an excellent place to spend time with your friends and family. We didn't take the guided tour, but I have a feeling that it would have been worth it. There is a good amount of space to get into and a fair amount of stairs to climb. Inside the Castle is not wheelchair or child stroller friendly. If kids with you can walk and climb stairs with help its gonna be an adventure for them. There is adequete walking space around the castle with good views to the river as well as to the nature around. The silence is very pristine. Perhaps we were lucky that it was not crowded at all on the day of the visit. There is also a tavern and exhibition hall in the compound along with other amenities. And a play area for kids too. All in all you can spend a day easily over there if you drag time. I would recommend consider spending half a day. Combining with a river cruise with water taxi or the regular service will also be an additional cheer.

We had a wonderful visit and stay at Loevestein Castle. Visitors may be surprised to learn that you can spend the night in the adjacent houses on the castle grounds! The staff was very friendly and the breakfast carefully prepared. The exhibits draw link between political prisoners and some of the castles prominent internees. I would have hoped for a little more emphasis on the medieval history of the castle but this may come in a future exhibit. Careful: it was a little difficult to get to the castle in Springtime; check the ferry schedules carefully.

  • 4/5 Christy D. 1 year ago on Google
Visited Loevestein several times. The castle is robust and feels truly medieval. Location between the rivers is really nice, especially when you get there with a riverbus or rivertaxi, call Riveer for this service. The exhibition by Amnesty International was impressive, particularly the isolation cell of Mr Navalny. The castle tour is done through your phone or with a guide. It takes about 1.5-2 hours to go around the castle and ita surroundings. A walk in the fortress walls is recommended. As is a walk in the land between the rivers outside the castle. Just take a bit more time and make your 10K steps for the day there. Café with lunch options on site. Not really suitable for very young kids. Also hard to climb the stairs with a pram or wheelchair. Worth a visit.

Wonderful place, free to roam everywhere. Very quiet and to get there you pass by a natural reserve with various semi wild animals. The castle itself is nicely arranged, a lot of text to read and items to view. At the exit we grabbed a bite and the food was good. Not expensive for a visit and it is a historical landmark of Netherlands

BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS! We were so enchanted by the area around the castle - the fields, water and magnificent horses on the hiking trail came as such a wonderful surprise! We will definitely bring our bicycles next time to explore even more. The castle itself is well taken care of and the staff is super friendly and helpful. We visited the castle late on a Saturday afternoon so we were unfortunately not able to visit the restaurant (also on the the list to do next time!) They have some fun summer holiday activities for the kids as well as castle tours. We spent about 2 hours on the premises - it wasn't busy at all. A very pleasant outing!

Slot Loevestein was really well presented and interactive. The key to the gate for everyone is a great touch and the staff were very friendly. Only negative is that they only accept Dutch bank cards and cash, so make sure you have enough cash for entry, lunch (very reasonable prices) and souvenirs.

What a beautiful place! Upon entering the castle you receive a key you can use for entering the castle and start many more interactive facilities. Walking through the 600+ year old castle is just great. There is a small restaurant on the castle grounds which serves various drinks and snacks. Toilet facilities are plenty and were pristine. Will definitely go again!

Nice location, although not that big. You get a plastic key that unlocks the gate and activates spoken explanations about the castle and it's former habitants, fun for the kids. (Translated by Google) It was a while since we had been in Loevenstein. It has now become more of a museum. With a nice key that gives you access to different areas, displays and activities. I think it has improved. Nice tour through the castle and in the meantime learned something about the history of our country. It's a great idea for the museum to put a guide in the castle who can ask you anything and who tells you things about the castle and about Hugo de Groot.
