I enjoyed my visit here and it was pretty interesting and I learnt some good history around an area I knew very little about. However there were some draw backs. The main negative was the guided tour. I felt we were rushed through it and we weren’t given enough time to look at exhibits on the way around. For this they charged us 18 euros each. An self guide tour with headphones was 8 euros I think and I’d have much preferred that. Also they don’t let you take photos… although I managed to sneak a few. 😄😎 Worth a visit though but could do better with what they have.

Has a ton of potential as a museum and place of education. The wax figures were very well done, and the tour was very organized, if a bit rushed. It would be nice if there were an option to wander on your own, as opposed to doing a 60 minute walking tour. My main issue was that they seemed to be avoiding the topic of Hungary's involvement in the second world war, skipping directly to when the Soviets came. This came in the form of not only the guide, but the information video and the exhibit itself. I would recommend doing research into the history of the place to supplement a visit.

Starting off with a short film to explain the history, this 1.5 hour tour is 100% worth it. I’m so happy we came here. History is so interesting and the tour guide did a great job explaining the history of this place with detailed information. Only guided tour is available so book in advance.. the lower point is 18 meters below ground level.

I think this could be amazing. For me the tour was slightly overpriced for what I got, following the guide I felt rushed, couldnt hear fully as the group was huge with some at the front seeming to want to rush round. For me I'd have liked the option to look around and take it in at my own speed. Sad this wasn't an option.

The museum itself is really well designed and the history is amazing. However, the experience is very lacking. A guided tour is the only option and the price is very high, and a 90 minute tour ended after about 70. You start with a video in Hungarian (with out of sync English subtitles) and then continue to a very rushed tour with robotic explanations. We couldn't even take the time to look around as we had guides behind us rushing us and closing doors. I would definitely avoid this tourist trap, but if you can afford it, go just to see it.

Perfect museum but too little time for each group, you basically rush through and look around walking. But the museum itself is very good and personal know what they're talking about. Great original souvenirs such as gas masks and med kits.

A fascinating and must see hospital in the caves under Buda Castle where brave Red Cross nurses, doctors and volunteers treated at some times 600 people with only 50 staff during WWII and the 1956 revolution. Realistic wax figures, actual equipment from the time, incredible example of Hungarian ingenuity and technical skill. Our guide Timi is herself a Hungarian Red Cross volunteer and first aid instructor and she told me she loved the place. She was an excellent guide in English language. A touching and proud afternoon for this international Red Cross delegate. Don't miss it.

The museum only offers group tours. We took the Hungarian language tour, due to our time reaching the museum and we were given English audio guides with plenty of information, at no extra cost. The guide was very nice and spoke in English for us too. The museum is fantastic, a must-see eye-opener into the history of Budapest. It brings to light a lot of goodness the population of Budapest did during WW2, the Soviet era, and much more. The staff is very friendly, speak English very well and I heard them speak in Italian to some other tourists too.

An must see museum. Yes a bit expensive and payment with card only but is worthy. There are other so called museums in Budapest that are offering less for the almost same amount. Tours are guided, no photo allowed because is city’s war/bomb shelter. Tour was fast , less than 1 hours due to tourist flow and narrow space. Tour guide was Dora. Cute!

A English speaking guided tour happens every half an hour. There are translated guides available for others. Fascinating tour that takes about an hour. Cost about 8000fr for 2 of us (about a tenner). You go underground around the hospital and then the top secret nuclear bunker! Well worth it

Amazing museum with lifelike wax figures and detail recreations of the museum's hospital days. You'll have to go on a guided tour which leaves hourly (more frequent during summer) but the guides are friendly and informative. Tours are in English and Hungarian but audio guides of different languages are available.

(Translated by Google) The historical curiosity of the place is very exciting and meticulously executed throughout the museum. BUT. I would immediately throw out the driver who figured out that he had to grind the whole exhibition in an hour, you can’t really see anything because they will have an immediate effect right away. If you have a photographic memory, I would definitely recommend it and you can make your memories burst from home, but those who are a little interested in the subject should be prepared with soothing because I was also he can do. Oh yeah, as an extra we went in steps at the photos on display in the last hallway, there was really no time to read and even at three-quarters the light went off and he smiled and nodded to apologize, but the light switch turns on automatically and you MUST go. In light of this, it is very overpriced and you can hardly get anything for your money. Balf * custom. Balf*szok.

A fascinating collection of paraphernalia and waxworks throughout this amazing slice of hidden Hungarian history. Just a shame that yours aren’t currently conducted English and it feels a bit rushed getting through the exhibition. That said, the very nice lady giving the tour in Hungarian was super helpful to us in English, whenever she could be. Great staff here. Only other gripes being that we couldn’t take photos and that there were some great opportunities for gift shop purchases such as postcard replicas of the awesome posters, or replicas of the some of the medicine packaging and labels (for the design-minded nerds amongst us!)

The place is undoubtedly really interesting. The problem was that you can only enter by paying a tour, a tour that is not good, the girl had clearly memorized it and the whole time it felt like she was reading a script, instead of it just flowing naturally. When we asked her something she clearly did not understand the question and replied back with another memorized comment, if she didn't understand she could've just said so instead of replying something that had no relation whatsoever with our question. I guess after a really hot day in Budapest coming down here is cool because it's quite cold. But I'm definitely not coming back. And you can't take pictures.

(Translated by Google) I would say it is an almost must see if you visit Budapest. You will know first-hand and see with your own eyes how this bunker worked in times of war. Once inside, the very environment of the place transmits so much suffering that you will walk with maximum respect and put yourself in the place of the population of the past. It can only be accessed with a guide, paying entrance. There is no guide who speaks Spanish, so the tour is in English. If you do not get along very well with the Anglo-Saxon language, they also give you some telephones in which you can reproduce in Spanish the explanation of each of the spaces in the bunker.

(Translated by Google) There were 22 people in one group, but considering COVID 19, the group was taken into 2 groups. We set off with the first small group. Already in the first 10 meters it became clear that the pace was a bit fast. We arrived at the medical devices, which were in a closet, nicely labeled, grouped. As I watched my group set off, by the time the leader of the other group was already there. He also told me not to miss out on my group. I remarked that the young man was running a bit. Part of our history is this museum, which is very well illustrated and gives the 'atmosphere' as much as possible.More BUT there are ... 1.The exhibition guide seemed to be in a running race, we had to hurry after that -1 hour was spent to watch the exhibition - it made me feel "let's be over it". It follows the second DE. One hour is not enough to look at everything normally, it is to look closely at the completely excluded. 3. Basically, I would still say expensive. if I did not take into account the negatives mentioned above, so I say that it is cheekily expensive. I think this exhibition deserves more respect (no) in more ways. I just trust the bosses sitting behind the desk, or those who run this exhibit, to read the written reviews, reflect on and change them. In any case, thank you for the experience. Miközben nézegettem a csoportom elindult, mire a másik csoport vezetője mar oda ért. Ebből következik a második DE.

We had an amazing experience with the tour given by Lilla. She was absolutely brilliant. She gave us interesting facts, with a clear tone and she is very approachable to ask further questions. The attraction itself was very good and maintained well. The history speaks volumes. I would highly recommend this place.

Amazing and interesting museum! The tour guide is just amazing and she was so familiar with the Hungarian history answering all the questions. It’s an emergency hospital using during WW2 and the Hungarian revolution of 1956. It’s painful, great and helps to learn more about the history of Hungary

Expensive experience, but a really interesting and informative tour of a place with a pretty unique history. The facts that you absorb throughout the tour are definitely interesting and worth conveying to everyone who wants to hear them. I would surely recommend the tour of this place if interested in the history of the Eastern bloc and the impact of wars, in general.

HOSPITAL IN THE ROCK The Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum stands as a testament to history within the caverns beneath Buda Castle. Established in the 1930s in preparation for World War II, it served as an emergency hospital and bomb shelter. Ordered by the mayor of Budapest, its construction began in 1939, with the emergency surgical center becoming operational in 1944. Originally focused on providing medical care for civilians, its role expanded to include soldiers during the conflict. Throughout the Siege of Budapest, the hospital bravely treated the wounded and cared for the fallen. Equipped with its own generators, it even offered X-ray capabilities. Following the siege, the hospital's use dwindled, only resurging briefly in 1956 during an uprising against Soviet rule. In the years that followed, it transformed into a nuclear bunker as tensions of the Cold War escalated. Today, the museum showcases anti-radiation kits and artifacts from that era. Between 1958 and 1962, the hospital underwent upgrades to address chemical and nuclear threats. However, advancements in technology rendered it obsolete by the late 1960s. It remained unoccupied except for the Mohacsi family, who cared for the facility until 2004, maintaining its equipment and cleanliness. Now a museum, the Hospital in the Rock offers guided tours, providing a captivating experience. Through waxwork recreations and original artifacts, it paints a vivid picture of the past. As you explore, the museum offers a poignant reminder of the fears that shaped generations in Eastern Bloc countries and beyond. It's an unmissable opportunity to step into history. Visit it and be amazed!

(Translated by Google) The guide is really meaningful, it is worth asking, because they are willing to answer everything. I highly recommend it to anyone, even someone who doesn’t like history because it provides a lasting experience. It’s a good idea to throw a sweater in your bag before you go, as it’s only 18-19 ° C down there, but it’s cool in the summer. The only downside is the duration, I think one and a half to 2 hours would be ideal for this 1km hike. In any case, thank you for the thought-provoking experience!

Set up in miles of natural caves and tunnels under the historic Buda Castle is this quirky museum, dedicated to the space’s former life as a military hospital during World War II (it later expanded during the cold Cold War to include nuclear bunkers). In 2008, the museum opened to the public, complete with borderline-creepy wax mannequins set up in re-created situations: doctors in the middle of surgery, a room of full hospital beds, military personnel. Visitors wander through winding hallways, accessible only through an informative tour, (tip: stick with the group, it’s very easy to get lost) take part in a nuclear readiness drill, view a small exhibit of the nuclear weaponry available today, and witness actual items melted in Hiroshima.

Friendly staff, great exhibits, very informative and extremely intriguing. My family and I had a great time visiting this museum and would recommend anyone coming to Budapest to put this on their list. It isn't one of the most well known museums but deserves every bit of recognition. The tour guide spoke in both English and Hungarian, and provided great insight into the history of the building. 5/5 all the way.

(Translated by Google) When visiting Budapest be sure to visit this museum! A hospital set up in what was initially a World War II banker. In addition to being different in itself, the guided tour museum tells the history of the city during the war. It is recommended to schedule the visit, we were close to the new year, without scheduling, and we almost couldn't make it. At the time, the museum's shop sold as souvenirs some objects from the Second World War that were left in the museum's facilities and exceeded the exhibition capacity, such as canteens, masks and syringes. Maybe it is because It's been a long time since I have been there, but what I have read in some of the most recent reviews regarding the high price and big tour groups, that was not certainly not the case when I was there years ago. A very impressing museum which show you the conditions of medical treatment from 1944 to 1945 and later during the resistance to the Soviet occupiers in 1956. There is not enough place for all the injured, but first ambulant help to transport to another hospital. The hospital in the rocks was also planned to help in the case of atomic war during the cold war. There could be only little help. The pollution and deathly fall out is unparalleled. The electricity generation from gas is still working, also the oxygen machines and water reserves.

Was great in the past. Since the remake it's a museum dedicated towards being anti-nuklear war, rather than depicting the historical circumstances and events regarding the hospital. So if you are interested in that one, you will be disappointed.

It is a very interesting historical place with figure installation telling about this hospital in different times of Budapest history. A fantastic piece of history, well worth the visit regardless of whether you are overly interested in history. Visit to the museum is by guided tour only, so very much worth booking in advance in order to plan your sightseeing day of the castle district. Tours are offered in a multitude of languages and thd English speaking I attended was fantastic with the guide providing lots of information throughout. So pleased I came back to take the tour!

The English tour guide had a very strong accent and we had trouble understanding the majority of the words she said. Additionally, there were too many people in the tour and so you could not get close enough to the tour guide to hear her many times. The place would have been super interesting if we had learned more stories. The Hungarian group was also very close so two languages were going on at once. The experience would have been a lot better with a microphone, someone who spoke English as a first language, or prerecorded speakers. The wax figures were amazing and the museum itself is great.

Booked this on a whim and wasn't quite sure what to expect. It ended up being one of our favourite things about visiting Budapest (up there on the list with the ruin pubs)! I would recommend booking tickets in advance and going for an earlier time slot. We went for the 10am hoping it would be less busy. It made a huge difference as a bunch of tour groups came shortly after us. There isn't a lot of space in the tunnels, so make sure you stick close to the guide (can be hard to hear if you are further back). No photos/videos are allowed, and they will provide coats for people who want them as it can get chilly in the tunnels. Our tour guide (Vivi) was amazing and the tour was super interesting. 100% would recommend this experience. We learned a lot and are so happy we did it. :)

The place is as authentic as can be. A true gem of times now passed. The tour is with a mandatory guide. The tour starts with a short video screening showing the story of the underground tunnels and how they were used. Then it displays true images of the siege on Budapest and the times the revolution. Then the tour takes the group through the different rooms in the tunnel. Each room is like a time capsule, portraying scenes of different hospital departments with amazing details. In later times the place was used as an atomic shelter and part of the tour is focusing on that which really adds to the overall theme. The small souvenir shop sells authentic artifacts that we were happy to take with us. This museum was one of our favorites in Budapest. No photos were allowed unfortunately.

While definitely interesting experience keep in mind you have to take guided tour through museum that lasts 60 mins. The museum is in shape of tunnels so it's not possible to stay in one room as long as you wish. You have to keep moving and you'll miss a lot of exhibits. Wax figures and medical instruments used during the war are worth more than a quick glance. All in all, I do recommend it but I think the price is too high (20 euros).

A very interesting museum and well worth a visit. The hospital was built inside a series of natural caves to provide protection during WW2 and was also used during the 1956 revolution. You can only visit as part of an organised tour, lasting approximately 1H 30M, which starts with a cinema screening which outlines the hospital's history. The wax models are all very lifelike. As well as the medical themed exhibits there are military exhibits including a real, full size helicopter! The tour also includes a visit to the power/control room. The guide was very knowledgeable and able to answer any questions. Photos are not allowed but I sneaked a few in 😉🤫

An interesting museum of fascinating historic background. The English tour guide Andi did a marvelous job - great explanations on everything, knowledgeable to answer all questions, PLUS with a great genuine smile. Please keep it up with your good work! One star deducted coz the exhibited wax statues are a little dated - given the most interesting stories of the place, management of the premise may consider bringing in more technology (hologram? Immersive experiences?).

  • 3/5 Mike K. 10 months ago on Google
Extremely expensive (8931 Ft!!!) yet fascinating space and history with a vast collection of WWII medical implements and equipment. The wax figures are pretty good and tell a compelling story of what a battlefield hospital would be like. The second part of the tour where they talk about Hiroshima is loosely relevant at best, and it have been much much better to talk about the preparations and engineering around the changes made to harden the facility in case of nuclear strike. For someone who wants to take it all in, the tour is rushed, and guide just reciting interesting, but robotic narration. Never once did they ask if there were questions from the guests. It’d likely take twice as long to enjoy the space and the carefully curated displays. I’d strongly recommend the operators change to an audio self guided model like the Museum of Terror (6000 Ft). The guide I had added nothing to the experience and the pace leads me to challenge the value. Further, not being able to take photos is a sign of the greedy / scarcity mindset of the operators. Good photos posted on social media is advertising you can’t afford to pay for.

I visited the museum with our school group. This WWII hospital worked tirelessly to save lives. We learned several children were born there during the War and heard of one girl returning to see the her humble birthplace. The displays are fantastic. The collection includes a helicopter, military jeep, and communications equipment for the field. Our tour was in Hungarian, but all other languages are facilitated through hand held devices. This was very handy, as I could rewind and listen as many times as needed. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and helpful with our questions. The museum has many steps and low rise ceilings, as it is part of a cave. You will be glad you included this tour in your trip to Budapest.

  • 3/5 Vineet K. 9 months ago on Google
Guided tours only. This is a real nuclear bunker that was used as a hospital during various conflicts in the city’s history. There is a video about the bunker jn the beginning and then you explore the cave system with a guide. The cave is full of well-made wax figures recreating medical scenes from the bunker. In the end they talk about what nuclear bombs are and their effects on people (why the bunker exists). The tour itself was well narrated but overall it was an average experience. There were 14 people in the group and the corridors are narrow so you have to walk in a single line and its hard to hear the guide in the back. Some spaces are really small so you have to take turns to view them but the guide starts talking in the next room before everyone has a chance to look at the exhibits.. so if you’re in the back of the group you will miss out on a lot of narration. They should really limit the group size to 6 at the most. The bunker simply isn’t fit for leading larger groups. If you work in the medical field you will love whats on display. If you have never heard about nuclear bombs or Japan’s fate in WW2 you will love the story. Everyone else can safely skip this museum.

An original museum near Budapest Castle! You will learn a lot of things about the siege of Budapest and the revolution from a civilian point of view. Everything in the museum wants to convey a message of peace and altruism. Not the most joyful place you'll visit in Budapest, but certainly one you will remember! You can only visit it on a guided tour, so it is necessary you book your tickets in advance. You also are not allowed to take any pictures or videos inside the museum.

Nice museum with a rich history, but too expensive and quite disappointing. The tour was really rushed, so I coudn't even look at all the exhibits properly. And there was absolutely no time to read the notes next to the medical tools explaining what they were used for. Big downside is also that you can't take photos. I'm glad I visited, it was overall interesting, but would probably not visit again. I think it would be better if you could visit the museum on your own at your own pace. I would definitely enjoy it more that way instead of going with the guide... There are toilets inside for free.
