Not being very familiar with Armenian food, I asked for some recommendations and was not disappointed. Everything was delicious. The woman even literally brought out all the desserts so I could pick one out. I felt uneasy at first, as I sometimes do, going into Eastern European establishments (I am over 50% eastern european, but I don't "look" like it), but the lady made me feel very welcomed and took very good care of me. I would certainly return again. There was some berry juice with the actual berries that sat at the bottom and was brought a spoon so I could get every last amazing piece out.

In general, the food is good and delicious. We tried khachapuri, shashlik, and khinkali, which were all very tasty. The atmosphere is VERY cozy and homely. However, the prices are slightly on the higher side, and the portion sizes are a bit small.

Very good food and service. Things are slow as everything is made to order and the owners are willing to make you what you wish! Would go back to try more things

Imagine going to eat at some one’s house… it is a lot like that! Freshly home-made food that is comforting. The plates and forks are a throw back of my grandmas dishes but I loved it. It made me feel like we were special guests at a tea party. Service was slow and that’s why I took one star away, but service was friendly enough. Our waitress didn’t speak fluent English so she did not seem confident to speak much with us but she understood us alright. I recommend going for the lunch specials because ordering a la carte was a little pricey. I will go back to try more dishes!!

After 3:30 PM, $23.76 dine-in total ($19.80 lamb kebab & $2.20 can of Coca Cola plus $1.76 tax) for what you see in the photos. A bit pricey for most, and I was given a salad appetizer too (usually not included) so I bumped up a star. It was okay food and service at best but comparing this meal to their competition the pricing is out of range/question for frequent meals here and definitely on the higher end for quantity. For example, I can get quadruple the quantity at Chipotle as well as high quality. I visited here because Nikko's kitchen is closed today. I asked for rice and was given French fries not Armanian potatoes (which were the two options on the menu for what I ordered). They gave a good amount of salt which I liked. The rice was initially served lukewarm and had to be microwaved for an extra 2 minutes. Lamb was smaller than I expected from the provided menu. I got 5 pieces of lamb slightly undercooked (hint of red on the inside). Was not asked how I would like the meat cooked. I was just happy it was not burnt. If you have to ask the customer if the food is warm or not, it's probably not. Other than that, it was an okay experience. She did not come out "a hundred times" to serve me. 😆 I was shocked to be the only customer there but there was still a decent wait. Speed could be faster, price adjusted to match quantity, and maybe they will realize or maybe not but the quality and/or amount of food needs improvement to match the cost. To put this bluntly, I did not feel like a "king" waiting on microwaved rice. Good points: gold utensils, food mostly cooked, and honest owner willing to listen to constructive criticism and hopefully apply it for continued growth. As Ararat is a small business offering Mediterranean cuisine, I decided to eat here vs other places. Wishing you the best of luck

One of the best restraunts in the Chicago suburbs area! The food was really good and delicious. Really loved the hospitality as well. I can say that its a hidden gem! Would love to visit again. The quantity was little bit less but that's ok, since the quality is off the charts... Great work guys!

Let me start by saying that the food was great. My only qualm is that the portion sizes for what they charge are minuscule. I understand that they are a small business but to have these lavishly beautifully taken pictures of the food and the plates don’t match what they advertise is plain misrepresentation. The chief reason for my 1-star is the abysmal or the lack of customer service. Their wait staff is as piss poor at best in mannerism and etiquette of addressing customers. The goal in customer service and in a service industry is to serve the patrons needs and the person serving us made us feel extremely uncomfortable at best. She was condescending and rude. I ordered 2 Armenian coffees upon being seated and never saw them. Upon leaving, I asked her for the bill and her answer was, your coffee is ready. I politely responded that I ordered that when I initially sat down an hour ago and she insisted that I’d have to take for the coffee regardless of if I drank it or not. Overall, her body language, demeanor and lack of any service was my deciding factor in NOT recommending this place. If the management is reading this, please train your staff in (over the top) great service and fix the portion sizes or fix the prices to reflect what people are paying for. This visit was for a special occasion and it’s sad to say that this was possibly the most uncomfortable dining experience that we have ever had. It felt confining, rigid and very discourteous.

Ararat has the best shish kebob in the North Chicago area! The beef is tender and very flavorful. If you come, you must get a dessert! They have homemade cakes that are just delicious and the only gripe is they don’t give you a larger portion! The restaurant is ran by lovely ladies and they will take care of you! I plan on coming here every time I come by Mundelein😊

We had happened upon this place a month ago for a late lunch, and enjoyed it. We invited friends to join us for dinner. The website has a "Contact Us" opportunity, which I clicked on this morning. I asked whether they took reservations and that we are interested in a table for 4 at 6 PM. I did not hear back, so did make back-up reservations at another restaurant nearby. Thank goodness I did, because when my husband and I walked in at 6:03, the proprieter looked inquisitively at us. I asked whether they had a table for 4 (only one table was seated at the time), and she retorted, "did you call today?" I said, 'no, I e-mailed.' She let out a snort and said, "I don't look at e-mails. We don't have space." Fine, but why have a 'Contact Us' via e-mail if you don't actually check it? I will not be going back. The previous lunch was interesting but not extraordinary enough to be treated rudely.

I will not hesitate to say that in 10 years that I live in Chicago this is THE MOST RIDICULOUS food place I’ve been to. We came for a diner on a weekday, 2 people, and we did call ahead. The lady who works as a hostess/server on weekdays is extremely unprofessional. Fist of all, she gave us an unhappy look when we asked to dine in and told us they’re closing soon (even though she new we were coming). Then she heard us speaking Russian and decided to let us dine in. Once we were seated and given the menu, she REPEATEDLY told us that main chef comes only on Saturdays and that we should come back on Saturday for fresh food. It was Thursday. She said that we should order meat and avocado salad, and if we want anything else, she does not recommend it and we can order at our own risk. We did order those dishes. Avocado salad came less than 1 minute after we ordered and the AVOCADO WAS ROTTEN. They recommended us a fresh dish with rotten ingredients. After that we told them that we want to cancel the rest of food. They were ready to take payment for the spoiled salad but didn’t have a change from $20 bill so they let us go. At this point I am deciding whether to contact health inspection facility and report them. I will never be back, that’s for sure.

The dishes were very delicious, especially the lamb kabob, the soup chanahi. Their bread is really good too. Although, there is one con, their service is poor. We had an appointment made, the table wasn't ready, we weren't guided to a table, but were told where to sit with a careless tone. Within 45 minutes we got our glasses and water when I finally said something about that. For the soup we were only given three pieces of bread while people at another table got a full basket of pieces of bread even though they came in after us. She told me another loaf is baking so she'll come back and bring some more. The bread came to my table when I finished eating my soup without much of any bread. After ordering from the menu, I also wanted to request an eggplant for my kabob. The waitress told me to wait so she could attend to other clients that just came with a child and didn't fulfill my order. Then came another employee, so I asked her for that eggplant and also asked for a drunk cherry cake. The woman said okay and left. After waiting a while for that eggplant and ate our food, we still waited for our cake. Finally, the first waitress told us that they don't even have the cake we asked for. She began yelling at me for not telling her I wanted an eggplant served at the same time as the kabob. She then waved her hands saying that she's ready to drop everything and leave the place. She claimed I was complaining to someone about her when I haven't left the table. So I told her that the only person I complained to was to her. I barely restrained myself to continue eating the food to not ruin the mood for Mother's Day. The menu has a huge variety but when it comes to choosing what we want, there are many options that aren't available. They come out with the dishes to the people and ask who ordered what, not knowing who they are serving. They should have their menu updated and serve the clients that came first and number the tables, taking orders from specific tables, in a more organized way. Their attitude to citizen-born Americans is more kindly and positive meanwhile more rude and careless to us who speak a foreign language. Why do they treat people differently based on their backgrounds? I forced myself to add somewhat of a tip rather than nothing for them before I left.

The portions were scarce: plov dish was small with 3-4 small pieces of meat (beef instead of lamb), etc., but the worst of all was their stealing: they listed every item in the check x 1.1, thus covertly charging 10 % more for every item (e.g 1 plov was listed as 1.1 x $..., 6 mantys was 6.6 x $..., etc.), and unsuspected customers did not even know that they were charged 10 % surcharge and paid tip on top of that. Scam!.. And on top of that the waitress was openly rude and answered my questions with "Do not bother me; I am working." 😒 A woman came in to pick her carry-out order and quietly asked them for her payment change, and that waitress called the owner who came out and loudly announced, "Oh, you want your $2 back. OK, I will bring it now; the waitress just didn't tell me about it" in front of people, and the woman was visibly embarrassed. What an unamerican service!

PLEASE NOTE: If you order on line, you need to call the restaurant to make sure they received your order (don't know why they have an online ordering system....). I ordered on line and arrived at the pick up time provided. The manager said she does not look at her phone, that I should have called to confirm they got my order. I showed them what I ordered, and they said "oh that will take too much time" (don't know if they were trying to close early, it was 7:30pm). She said wait, they'll put something together. We really wanted to try the place out. She came out with a bunch of food, nothing at all that we ordered. She counted it all up and claimed that it was close to the cost I had ordered. I argued that one, I did not get anything that I ordered, and two, she was shorting me several dollars. She offered me some cake, but then had a fit when I asked for two! They need to learn a bit more about customer service. The good itself was pretty good, although again, nothing that we ordered....

Cute restaurant with a kind owner, but service was a nightmare. We never got napkins! Bathroom smelled like pee. They rip you off on your bill with these bizarre multipliers per charge. We paid $20 for hummus! I didn't both saying anything because I considered that a portion of their tip. Food was very bland which was surprising because of the reviews. Maybe it was an off night, but I will not be back due to the sneaky billing.

This place is a little Armenia away from home. The food tastes amazing, from the yummy kebabs to the freshly baked bread. The staff was super nice and helped add a cozy vibe to our experience. Recommend!!!

Me and my friend went on Thursday evening to have diner. (7:25pm) As soon we walked in, the lady(blond hair) gave us very unpleasant look. We told her that we called, she then sat us. And suggested to come back on Saturday. Every dish that we would ask, she would say I wouldn’t recommend it( я вам не предлагаю эту еду, она старая) we asked about the soups, she said she would not recommend it. I wanted to have khachapuri she said come back on saturday when everything is fresh. She said that avocado salad was fresh and the shashlyk’s are fresh. We then, ordered the salad and shashlyk’s. she gave us some bread that was so old (bread was smelling acetone, overstayed smell of the bread) and the avocado salad tasted rotten, they covered it with some oil, so it stays fresh in color ( i really regret that i did not take a picture of it). The avocado salad( supposedly) looked like guacamole with some sunflower oil on top. I immediately told my friend that i m afraid to get poisoned. (I am pregnant) we decided to leave the place. Then, i went to the back of the restaurant to cancel the order, lady asked if i want to cancel meats too? At this point, of course! i saw the kitchen, how dirty it was. I can not believe, where the health department is looking. I do not owe any business related to food. I live in the city of Chicago. I wouldn’t come back to this place and ask people to check the cleanliness and freshness of place and food before ordering any. I will be contacting the health department. She also mentioned that if the owner finds out that she saying that it’s old she will be in trouble. Thank you for your honesty.

The food was good. The place itself was not very inviting. I was the only customer at 12:45 PM on a Sunday. Another couple opened the door and left right away. The owner quickly ran to the door and asked them "is anything wrong". They just shrugged and quickly walked away. It looked like a disco ball on the ceiling, not sure what it was.

I come here every time I’m in town for business. Sadly that’s only twice a year. No other restaurant around will see me as long as Ararat exists. The food is delicious and the service is awesome.

A pleasant time at this local restaurant. The food was very good overall. All the starters were solid except for one that I wasn’t a fan of. The host and waitress were very nice
