Surprised that such a wonderful building and collection does not have many visitors. It is very well organised and looked after. Very clean throughout with air conditioning,Highly recommend! The shadows from the windows of the museum is another layer of art itself!

One of the best museum in Cairo. It offers a vast range of different treasures of Islamic Art. It is air conditioned and well executed. The only downside was the lack of English translations to some of the texts.

(Translated by Google) The Museum of Islamic Art is located in the Bab al-Khalq area, and it is one of the most important tourist attractions in Cairo and one of the largest Islamic museums in the world that simulates the era of Islamic rule. In addition to its distinguished architectural design, the idea of establishing a museum of Islamic art and antiquities began in the era of Khedive “Ismail” in 1869, and the idea was implemented In the era of Khedive Tawfiq in 1880, when Franz Pasha collected archaeological artifacts dating back to the Islamic era in the eastern iwan of Al-Hakim Mosque, God willing, and in 1882 the number of collected artifacts was 111, and a small building was subsequently built in the courtyard of Al-Hakim Mosque It was called the "Arab Museum" under the administration of Frantzbasha, who left the service in 1892. The current museum building was inaugurated during the reign of Khedive Abbas Helmy II on December 28, 1903, then the name of the house was changed in 1951 to the "Museum of Islamic Art. The museum has two entrances, one of which is in the northeastern side." And the other on the southeastern side, which is in use now.A facade of the museum overlooking Port Said Street is distinguished by its Islamic decorations inspired by the Islamic architecture in Egypt in its different eras. The museum consists of two floors; The first contains the exhibition halls, the second contains the warehouses and a basement used as a store and the restoration department On January 24, 2014, a car bomb exploded targeting the Cairo Security Directorate, opposite the museum. The bombing destroyed the façade of the museum opposite the directorate, and many artifacts were destroyed. Ansar Beit al-Maqdis group claimed responsibility for the terrorist bombing. The next day, UNESCO donated a huge sum of money to restore the artifacts and restore the museum to work. An official at the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities stated that the restoration will be completed in less than 4 months (Original)

Don't miss this stunning collection of Islamic art. This is a nice quiet museum that was refurbished in 2016 due to a car bomb. Everything is clearly labelled and organised by era and presiding rulers. It also has air-conditioning!

I was surprised! It’s old building (1903, Architect: Alfonso Manescalo Bey) looks very modern and harmonious! Museum exposition was reorganised three times and has a logical and interesting plan. Simple navigation through the ages motivated you to know more about Islam culture code. Participants get in touch with various directions of decorative applied art and visual arts. The collection is tastefully presented and NOT tiring, you find in each location something interesting and new for yourself. Courteous and attentive service, thanks to the museum staff. You must visit this museum, the power of ART unites the world!

We really enjoyed our time in the museum of Islamic art. It is a calm and quiet place to spend a good hour walking through this museum and seeing some really great pieces. Good English descriptions. Toilets onsite. Look out for the red dots on some of the items that signify they have been restored following a car bomb that attacked the police HQ opposite the museum a number of years ago. Security in the area is very visible and we felt really safe in all of Cairo and the rest of Egypt.

This place is unbelievable. Coming from the West and everything in every museum is behind glass or you are unable to get to close because of railing or partition, this museum allows you to get very close to all these ancient artifacts. You really feel the artisans work and product. The museum has so many unlabelled artifacts that ones curiosity or some interesting pieces continue to be a mystery. Things are scattered between ages but experiencing this museum is a must.

With its remarkable collection of rare woodwork and plaster artifacts, as well as metal, ceramic, glass, crystal, and textile objects from all over the Islamic world, the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Cairo, Egypt, is regarded as one of the greatest museums in the world. In 25 Halls, the museum has recently displayed roughly 4,500 artifacts, although it actually holds more than 100,000 items, with the remaining being stored. Rare Qur'anic manuscripts with some writing in silver ink and pages with ornate borders are included in the collection.

If you're interested in historical stuff, this is a good place to go. There's a lot of things you can appreciate inside the museum, i loved the art. Unfortunately they closed 30min before the schedule mentioned in the entrance. You will pay the half of the price if you're student, so do not forget to take with you the student card :)

An intense collection of wood works and artifacts, cutely organized by islamic eras then by collectibles (weaponry, coins, textiles, and calligraphy). A brief on each era is mentioned while entering each hall. Always look up, there are cute chandeliers and ceilings extracted from different eras. Took 3 hours for quick read by all halls.

Not a "can't miss" by any means, but a very interesting museum nonetheless. It's set up more as a Museum of Islamic art as seen through the Egyptian Lena but the art is beautiful with good explanations of it's history and importance.

The museum is a magnificent place as it has thousands of historical pieces and arts from the Abbased caliphate till the end of the Egyptian kingdom in 1952. Moreover, The museum has monuments from Iran, Iraq, India and so Many countries. Also you can see rare coins date back to the 6th century. Tickets are pretty cheap especially for Egyptian students, I got my ticket for 5 pounds.

Worst place in Egypt! I visited Egypt so many times and I never received this level of disrespect! The police in white uniform came up to me soon as I walked in the door trying to fight me while I was with my wife and baby! The lady at the ticket counter tried to short change me. I thought it might of been a mistake but reading the comments here it happened to other guest too. While reading the description on some of the artifacts they described Muslims as moslems in a discriminating way. Not sure if this is a mistake or this museum was made by someone who hates Muslims! I hope who ever is managing this museum trains the guards at the door to better embrace guest. Leaving Egypt at the airport the TSA agents and police are better trained. This museum should be better because it’s representing Muslims.

Foreigner entry ticket -120 LE Egyptian - 20 LE Museum is full of various Muslim art exhibits however some of them lack a descriptive narration. Overall, the museum feels a bit outdated which makes the whole experience not so engaging. Enjoyed several exhibits but the overall curation seems a bit dull and lacks involvement of different methods of narration.

Well curated and organized museum, hosted in an impressive palace. Artifacts crafted during the time of Umayyad, Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman rulers of Egypt are on display. The exhibition include ceramics, fabrics, carpets, ivory, woodcrafts and even guns, warrior armoires and maritime instruments. By visiting this museum, one can make an idea about the rich Islamic history of Egypt. Descriptions available in both English and Arabic. It's important to mention that Cairo was the wealthiest city in the world during the Mamluk rulers.

Take a break from mummies and Pharaohs and see this lovely Museum of Islamic Art; they have hundreds of beautiful pieces, displayed excellently in an organised manner. The museum is clean, not too busy and the staff were helpful. There's the option of a guided tour or just to explore yourself, there's lots of information on each piece and on the general history of the time, in both Arabic and English. The building is old and beautiful, and they have a courtyard to sit outside in, do not touch the cats though, they have come in from outside carry fleas. The gift shop wasn't open when I was there, there is no cafe as far as I can see. There are reasonable toilets, relatively clean, toilet paper available, however nothing to dry your hands with. There was no wait to get in on Saturday and the price was 270LE for a foreigner. I spent approximately 2 hours there and went round at a leisurely pace. I definitely recommend.

A nice Museum with friendly staff but almost no English speakers. It is very informativ on Islam and the Arabic culture in general but there are many items labbeld in the Arabic language only and the English on some descriptions could be improved easily. Here is a sample sentence from one of the attached photos: Original sentence: Further prestige wasaccorded to Arabicwhen itbecamethelanguage of science and philosophy; under the Abbasids in the 9th century CE an enormous variety of classical Greek texts on these subjects were translated into Arabic. Improved Sentence: Further prestige was accorded to Ar when it became the language of science and philosophy; under the Abbasids in the 9th century CE an enormous variety of classical Greek texts on these subjects were translated into Arabic. Looking at everything will require 1-2 hours depending on how fast you go.

(Translated by Google) The idea of establishing a museum for Islamic art and antiquities began in the era of Khedive “Ismail” in 1869, and the idea was implemented in the era of Khedive Tawfiq in 1880, when Frantz Pasha collected the archaeological artifacts dating back to the Islamic era in the eastern iwan of the Al Hakim Mosque. The number of collected archaeological artifacts is 111, and a small building was subsequently built in the courtyard of the Al-Hakim Mosque called the "Arab Museum" under the administration of Frantzpasha, who left the service in 1892. The current museum building was inaugurated during the reign of Khedive Abbas Helmy II on December 28, 1903. Then, in 1951, the name of the house was changed to the "Museum of Islamic Art." [2] Description of the museumedit The museum has two entrances, one on the northeastern side and the other on the southeast side, which is in use now. The façade of the museum, overlooking Port Said Street, is distinguished by its Islamic decorations inspired by the Islamic architecture in Egypt in its different eras. The museum consists of two floors; The first contains the exhibition halls, the second contains the warehouses and a basement used as a store and the restoration department. The museum contains many archaeological holdings dating back to the Islamic era, which number up to one hundred thousand antique masterpieces [3] (Original)

It is a nice museum that takes you from the history of Amoyeen till Mohamed Aly family. You will find monuments of all Islamic historical stages. Museum is not as large as the Egyptian Musuem but don't get fooled by that. It is not a small one and it tells you many things about this vast history of about 1400 years in Egypt. You will find pieces of walls, beuatifully crafted plates and dishes, huge doors, old weapons, old Quran transcripts and more. Building itslef is dated back to 1903 and looks amazing from outside, and the good thing is that the museum was renovated recently. There is printed map but you have to ask for it and there was supposed to be voice tour per their Google page but when I asked they said it is not available (or doesn't exist..not sure 😊) whether in Arabic or English. Also not as crowded as Egyptian museum which gives good space to enjoy it.

I first visited Cairo, Egypt for an extended period of time over the Summer of 2022, BUT did not get the chance to visit any museums. I promised myself that when I return to Egypt---I would make a point to visit one. THIS museum hit the mark, is BEAUTIFUL and was well worth the wait! Museum opens at 9am; I arrived by 10:30am. It was already busy with art students, but comfortable. Everything is organized on one floor, so one doesn't feel overwhelmed. I paid for my ticket when I arrived (no reservation needed). I took my time strolling throughout the museum, which was beautifully organized & included wonderful works of art, as well as educational written works. I ended my day just outside the museum which led to a very attractive courtyard, where the cutest little kitty ran up to greet me! If you are visiting Egypt---DON'T miss this museum! I would visit again.

The Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo is a cultural treasure trove. Its vast collection showcases the beauty of Islamic art, spanning centuries and regions. The meticulously curated exhibits offer insight into the artistic and cultural heritage of the Islamic world. A must-visit for art and history enthusiasts!
