The Coptic Museum is a museum in Coptic Cairo, Egypt with the largest collection of Coptic Christian artifacts in the world. It was founded by Marcus Simaika in 1908 to house Coptic antiquities. The museum traces the history of Egypt from its beginnings to the present day. It was erected on 8,000 square meter land offered by the Coptic Orthodox Church, under the guardianship of Pope Cyril V. The Coptic museum houses the world's most important examples of Coptic art and it was truly spectacular, the artifacts were breathtaking and the museum itself is very well-organized and everything was exhibited beautifully. I highly recommend checking out the museum whenever you’re in Coptic Cairo.

One of Egypt’s finest museums. The Coptic Museum is a welcome source of tranquility in the busy capital. Just a metro ride away from the centre, the museum has an impressive collection of Coptic art. The collection includes wonderful late Roman and early christian works of art, impressive textiles and awesome manuscripts. The building with its gardens and annexes is a gem itself. Well worth a visit if you’re in Cairo.

(Translated by Google) This museum is located in ancient Egypt within the boundaries of the Babylon Fortress, whose remains are located behind the museum building; Its construction began in the days of the Persians, but many additions took place during the reign of the Roman emperors Augustus and Trajan, and then the Roman emperors added to it. The French scientist (Maspero) played an important role in the establishment of the museum, as he worked to collect works of Coptic art and allocate a hall for them in the Egyptian Museum. After that, in 1893 CE, Marcus Pasha Thicke demanded that the collection of Coptic antiquities be included in the interests of the Committee for Preservation of Antiquities and Arts. This man struggled for a long time until he was able to establish the current building of the museum, which was inaugurated in 1910, and he was appointed its first director. The museum's first guide was published in 1930 This museum is the largest museum in the world of the antiquities of Egypt from the Coptic period, and it includes the following sections: Department of Stones and Frescoes. Department of the development of Coptic writing and manuscripts. Department of fabrics and textiles. Ivory and Icons section. Department of timber. Department of Minerals. Pottery and glass section The Coptic Museum The number of the Coptic Museum’s holdings is about 16,000. The museum’s holdings were arranged according to their types into twelve sections. A scientific presentation was presented in which the chronological order as possible was taken into account. We mention among the most important museum’s holdings: A limestone tombstone showing the overlap between the signs of the cross and the ankh (late 4th century AD). Textile fragment bearing some Christian symbols (6th century AD). An inscription on an ivory comb showing some of the miracles of Christ (7th century AD). Limestone column capital decorated with grape clusters (7th century AD). A bronze lamp with a handle in the form of a crescent and a cross (13th century AD). The old wing of the museum includes a collection of wooden furniture and inlaid doors. It should be noted that it includes the sycamore wood door of the holder of the icons of the Church of Saint Barbara. The panels can be distinguished by installing them in the Fatimid period during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The group settles in the new wing, which shows different types, styles and themes, such as geometric designs, acanthus scrolls and grape leaves, friezes decorated with rabbits, peacocks, birds, and rural activities, passing through the Hellenistic and Coptic heritage to the Islamic art forms in Egypt. The Coptic Museum includes manuscripts of the Bible dating back thousands of years and is an architectural masterpiece. The Coptic Museum was built to fill a gap in Egyptian history and art. The large collection of antiques, most of them of great importance for Coptic art in the world. The museum was built on "waqf" land belonging to the Coptic Church, which it willingly provided at the disposal of its founder His Holiness the Apostate Cyril V (died in 1927 AD and was succeeded by Anas the Nineteenth in 1929 AD) The Coptic Museum is located in a very important historical place, as it is located inside The walls of the famous fortress of Babylon, which is considered one of the most famous and largest remaining monuments of the Roman Empire in Egypt, and its total area including the garden and the fortress is about 8000 meters, and it was developed with its old and new wings and the hanging church, and it was opened after that in 1984. The Coptic Museum was affiliated with the Coptic Patriarchate until 1931, and then it became affiliated with the Ministry of Culture. The average daily visitor number ranges from 200 to 250 individuals of various nationalities. Worthwhile even for non-Christians. The building itself is already worth the 100 EGP entry fee, and the museum has some nice pieces. I found the art combining Coptic, Egyptian and Greek in one especially fascinating. Easily combined with the (free) Hanging Church next door, and quickly accessible through metro line 1. Highly recommended!

The Coptic Museum contains Copt Art from paintings, jewellery, illustrated books, wood beams. The museum is well curated and beautiful. If you love wood carvings and detailed art that links between Greek and Egyptian history it’s a great place. And also built around the Fortress of Babylon. It costs 100EP.

Lovely place to visit. A huge variety of Coptic artefacts from different time periods. Unfortunately, the museum was not air conditioned however you could feel that it is actually a little bit colder than outside. Most things have descriptions in English and French alongside Arabic. Be sure to arrive there early as its working hours are quite short. The museum has two floors and its beautifully carved in stone and wood.

The coptic museum is a good source of artifacts and facts about the origins of the coptic church in Egypt. Almost all items on display are labbeled in detailed English. The Babylon fortress is next to it and can be seen as a part of the park in which the museum is located. This museum can be reached easily using the metro since it is right next to the Mar Girgis station

It's like travelling to Greece in no time. After stepping in the museum's courtyard, you can forget that you're in Cairo. The oldest exhibits are about the pre Christian Greek civilization, there are many frescoes about people harvesting grapes, producing wine and about Dionysus, Aphrodite, about Zeus and Europe. The newer exhibits are artifacts collected from various Coptic churches around Cairo and they are like a time capsule. There are religious icons of various saints, some of them specific to Coptic Christianity, like Saint Apollo or Saint Bachus. The building that host the museum is a masterpiece itself, displaying an amazing mixture of Arab and Byzantine architecture. The patio makes the visitors feel like they are visiting the South of Spain. I was really impressed about the woodcraft created to protect the windows from sunlight. A great experience overall.

The Coptic Museum is a museum in Coptic Cairo, exhibiting Coptic antiquities, which basically means items from the Christain communities of Egypt. The museum has some of the world's most important examples of Coptic art, Coptic life, although the majority of the exhibits are of religious nature. Two of the highlights in the museum have to be the Monastery of Saint Jerome relocated from Saqqara and the Monastery of Saint Apollo from Bawit. A fantastic museum to visit in Coptic Cairo and much better value for money most museums in the city.

A good museum depicting arts of the Coptic period. There’s an entry ticket only to the museum, all other churches, the synagogue, structures around are free to visit and are indeed beautiful. Once you have been to all these places, the Coptic museum would simply feel as if an organised collection of intellectual art. If you are really an art connoisseur, then try it out, else one may choose to give it a skip.

The place is amazing and huge, however the light distribution is not very good especially for items preserved behind glass. Also, there's a separate ticket for taking photos.

Must visit for both locals and tourists. The hanging church and st George are fabulous. It’s magnificent to have the three religions represented in one area. The Jewish synagogue, the ant bin Aas mosque, the first one build in Egypt and surrounded by seven churches and a nunnery.

Unique in content - unique in context - unique in culture The Coptic Museum in Cairo is a gem on its right: a compilation of rarest and ancient antiquities, dating from earliest times of Christianity in Egypt. Artefacts are few but nicely displayed and with details in English, French and Arabic. Understandably, lighting is dimmed to avoid damaging old statues, artefacts and linen altar cloths. This is challenging since still photography is allowed but without flash. The visit is 1.5-2 hours, well worth it. Access via Cairo Metro (Line 1 Mar George's station) is very convenient.

Incredible experience! The Coptic art, engravings and the way they wrote and translated the Bible into the Coptic language is fascinating.
