I
really
ought
to
remember
to
read
reviews
before
booking
a
place,
because
if
I
had
I
likely
wouldn't
have
booked
Painter's
Lodge
for
our
two
night
getaway
to
Campbell
River.
However,
our
experience
was
not
as
bad
as
some
others
have
reported.
Our
second
floor,
end-of-the-
hall
room
in
the
main
lodge
was
comfortable,
spacious
(sitting
area
adjacent
to
the
sleeping/bathroom
area),
clean,
and
had
windows
along
three
sides
with
a
nice
balcony
overlooking
the
water.
We
enjoyed
sitting
out,
gazing
at
the
water,
watching
boat
traffic,
shorebirds,
and
a
family
of
bald
eagles,
plus,
at
dusk,
cruise
liners
inward
and
outward
bound
to
Alaska
glided
by
which
was
entertaining
to
watch.
The
place
has
potential
to
be
terrific,
but
falls
down
on
the
details.
Some
of
the
landscape
was
pretty,
but
some
was
weedy.
The
furnishings
and
finishes
are
tired
and
dated.
A
second
floor
public
lounge
was
without
any
reason
for
being
--
why
not
have
books
and
games
available?
Make
it
a
library.
The
archival
photos
in
the
main
building
were
kind
of
fun,
but
somehow
the
effect
was
without
charm
and
without
labels
to
tell
you
who
was
in
them
or
what
date.
Rooms
in
the
lodge
are
named
for
BC
painters,
but
nothing
was
done
to
extend
that
feature
into
the
public
areas.
The
hotel
is
waterside,
but
there
is
really
no
beach.
The
pool
was
closed
(I
can't
imagine
what
kids
are
meant
to
do
here
unless
a
family
is
out
all
day
and
only
sleeps
here.)
The
staff
person
that
checked
us
in
was
friendly
and
cheerful,
but
the
person
who
checked
us
out
was
surly,
bored,
and
discourteous.
Our
server
at
dinner
was
lovely,
friendly,
and
helpful,
and
was
so
polite
when
we
complained
about
the
food.
Breakfast
staff
were
brusque
and
dismissive
like
it
really
was
too
much
trouble
to
have
guests.
And
that
brings
me
to
the
food
which
is
where
Painter's
Lodge
really
falls
apart.
The
hotel
web
site
proclaims
Legends
restaurant
to
be
a
"gourmet
extravaganza"
and
a
dining
experience
"unlike
any
other."
Gourmet
--
not
so
much.
Unlike
any
other
--
true.
We
were
flabbergasted
to
read
a
menu
with
limited
entree
selections
accompanied
by
the
"unending
tapas
bar"
starters
and
dessert
for
$69
per
person.
We
couldn't
quite
believe
that
price!
We
checked
out
the
Tyee
pub
to
see
if
that
would
be
better,
but
the
selections
there
were
limited
as
well
and
we
were
in
the
mood
for
a
fine
meal,
not
pub
fare.
So
we
decided
to
stay
at
Legends
--
we
were
the
only
couple
dining
that
evening,
along
with
a
family
at
one
other
table.
The
"tapas"
bar
amounted
to
a
few
items
for
a
salad,
and
chafing
dishes
with
a
few,
petrified,
tepid
appetizers
(spring
rolls,
breaded
shrimp,
dim
sum
dumplings
--
this
is
Tapas???)
that
looked
like
they
had
been
bought
in
the
frozen
food
section
of
a
supermarket.
Ghastly.
My
entree
(seared
salmon
with
pesto
and
zucchini
on
linguine)
fortunately
was
very
good,
but
my
husband's
steak
was
overcooked
and
mediocre.
Our
waitress
did
her
best
to
be
cheerful
when
we
talked
about
it
with
her,
and
she
explained
that
it
was
a
concept
they
were
trying
in
an
effort
to
be
different
than
the
norm.
My
opinion
is
that
they
need
to
try
a
new
concept
with
actual
good
food
--
the
website
promises
"Fresh
Local
Produce
and
Seafood."
For
69
bucks
a
person,
it
had
better
be
special.
The
wine
list
was
just
plain
weird.
Surely
they
could
feature
BC
wines
and
spirits.
"Free
Continental"
breakfast
was
simply
awful.
Cold
scrambled
eggs,
cold
bacon,
some
bagels,
tasteless
banana
(?)
muffins,
cold
cereal,
toaster
waffles,
toast.
There
was
no
orange
juice
and
only
herbal
tea
available.
The
second
night
we
ate
dinner
at
Dolphins
Resort
just
down
the
road.
It
was
excellent.
The
food
was
terrific,
good
wine
list,
lovely
service,
and
a
charming
room
with
a
good
vibe.
The
grounds,
beautiful
landscaping,
and
sweet
cottages
looked
very
appealing.
I
recommend
you
stay
there
instead.
We
would
for
sure.
And
Painter's
Lodge
might
take
some
hints
from
their
neighbour
on
how
to
spruce
the
place
up.
