Painters Lodge used to be a favourite for us, this last stay was extremely disappointing. The pool, hot tub and restaurant were closed and only deep fried food on pub menu. I had called the hotel directly to book and asked if everything was open and running, they said yes and booked our stay. There were issues with our room, the toilet would not stop running, fans were broken and the fridge leaked. The grounds used to be absolutely stunning but there were weeds everywhere. When checking out the front desk clerk asked how we liked the stay, I said disappointing. A local resident approached me when leaving and said it is under new ownership, they believe a foreign investor. The locals are extremely disappointed how this beautiful establishment is not being maintained to previous standards and deteriorating. We are very sad that what used to be an absolute gem is no longer. They charged full rates and did not deliver.

    1. When arriving to our room, the room smelled. It smelled like smoke and very "closed up" and musty. 2. There was a dog barking for over 30 minutes, when I called, I was told that was the neighbors dog and there was nothing they could do about it. I thought with the resort being off season and half empty, why did they put is there? When the person very obviously knew about the dog issue. 3. The place is really run down, no dinner there now, except at the bar. A Continental breakfast that left much to be desired. At 10 am on our way out we stopped to have "breakfast". When we got there, there were no eggs, no juice, no cheese, 1 sad little croissant. I asked the front desk girl to please have someone bring more food out, she proceeded to tell me there probably was no food left because we were late to breakfast. I asked her when was breakfast over and she said at 11. I then asked her, so you are telling me you do not have enough breakfast to support your guests until the time you say breakfast is over at 11? She just sat there, she was obviously just saying anything to me too get me to stop " bothering" her, (she was very deep in the city chat, when I got there). This was really a great place a few years ago. I guess things change, like me not going back there again. So disappointing!

The hotel room is the worst we have ever seen - and my wife and I have travelled extensively. We checked in and out within 10 min. The room was run down, dark, limited facilities and the worst of all a terrible overwhelming stench. It smelled like an old cattle enclosure. Absolutely disgusting! Painters Lodge doesn’t deserve a single star.

My family and I have stayed here on two occasions. It provides good value for what you pay. It even has its own dock and pier you can walk. Beautiful setting. I’ve taken one star off because their pool hasn’t been open for two years. This is one of the reasons why we booked - both times. They show the pool in all their photos but it has been under renovations for two years. I’ve never been to another place that allowed their pool to be out of service for two summers in a row.

This hotel and its facilities reminded me of a starlet who was once celebrated and grand, but has now fallen on hard times. It needs MAJOR updating for the prices they are charging per night. The rooms were 30C at night, and the doors and windows do not have screens so we couldn’t even keep them open or we’d be eaten alive by mosquitoes (which actually happened to my kids as they were in the loft and didn’t shut the window). The fans barely worked. My son commented that the bathroom reminded him of an RV bathroom, not in an entitled kid way, just a comment of observation. It was very tiny and dated. The beds were not comfortable, we could feel the springs. The grounds were lovely, very beautiful and well maintained. The restaurants were worse than the rooms. We went over to April point and only 3 members of our party could eat something off the menu; a lot of processed and high allergen foods. The furnishings were so sad and dated. The staff however were fantastic. So friendly and kind and you could tell they were overworked/understaffed, but still trying their best to keep everyone happy. We were told by one of the staff that the hotel was bought by a company 3 years ago, and it’s just not the same anymore. Well, we certainly felt that. Painter’s is not what it once was.

I really ought to remember to read reviews before booking a place, because if I had I likely wouldn't have booked Painter's Lodge for our two night getaway to Campbell River. However, our experience was not as bad as some others have reported. Our second floor, end-of-the- hall room in the main lodge was comfortable, spacious (sitting area adjacent to the sleeping/bathroom area), clean, and had windows along three sides with a nice balcony overlooking the water. We enjoyed sitting out, gazing at the water, watching boat traffic, shorebirds, and a family of bald eagles, plus, at dusk, cruise liners inward and outward bound to Alaska glided by which was entertaining to watch. The place has potential to be terrific, but falls down on the details. Some of the landscape was pretty, but some was weedy. The furnishings and finishes are tired and dated. A second floor public lounge was without any reason for being -- why not have books and games available? Make it a library. The archival photos in the main building were kind of fun, but somehow the effect was without charm and without labels to tell you who was in them or what date. Rooms in the lodge are named for BC painters, but nothing was done to extend that feature into the public areas. The hotel is waterside, but there is really no beach. The pool was closed (I can't imagine what kids are meant to do here unless a family is out all day and only sleeps here.) The staff person that checked us in was friendly and cheerful, but the person who checked us out was surly, bored, and discourteous. Our server at dinner was lovely, friendly, and helpful, and was so polite when we complained about the food. Breakfast staff were brusque and dismissive like it really was too much trouble to have guests. And that brings me to the food which is where Painter's Lodge really falls apart. The hotel web site proclaims Legends restaurant to be a "gourmet extravaganza" and a dining experience "unlike any other." Gourmet -- not so much. Unlike any other -- true. We were flabbergasted to read a menu with limited entree selections accompanied by the "unending tapas bar" starters and dessert for $69 per person. We couldn't quite believe that price! We checked out the Tyee pub to see if that would be better, but the selections there were limited as well and we were in the mood for a fine meal, not pub fare. So we decided to stay at Legends -- we were the only couple dining that evening, along with a family at one other table. The "tapas" bar amounted to a few items for a salad, and chafing dishes with a few, petrified, tepid appetizers (spring rolls, breaded shrimp, dim sum dumplings -- this is Tapas???) that looked like they had been bought in the frozen food section of a supermarket. Ghastly. My entree (seared salmon with pesto and zucchini on linguine) fortunately was very good, but my husband's steak was overcooked and mediocre. Our waitress did her best to be cheerful when we talked about it with her, and she explained that it was a concept they were trying in an effort to be different than the norm. My opinion is that they need to try a new concept with actual good food -- the website promises "Fresh Local Produce and Seafood." For 69 bucks a person, it had better be special. The wine list was just plain weird. Surely they could feature BC wines and spirits. "Free Continental" breakfast was simply awful. Cold scrambled eggs, cold bacon, some bagels, tasteless banana (?) muffins, cold cereal, toaster waffles, toast. There was no orange juice and only herbal tea available. The second night we ate dinner at Dolphins Resort just down the road. It was excellent. The food was terrific, good wine list, lovely service, and a charming room with a good vibe. The grounds, beautiful landscaping, and sweet cottages looked very appealing. I recommend you stay there instead. We would for sure. And Painter's Lodge might take some hints from their neighbour on how to spruce the place up.

This place has so much potential, but is so poorly managed that I can't recommend it to anyone. We stayed in the "gate house", which is a larger two-storey cabin. We had originally booked one of the standard cabins, but were told later that the one we had booked was unavailable due to renovations. So we bumped up to the gatehouse, at a higher cost. When we arrived we discovered that all the cabins were occupied and there were no renovations happening. It's clear they overbooked them and gave us the choice to upgrade or cancel. The gate house is large and has great potential, but is not properly equipped at all. There is a sizeable kitchen, but there was no frying pan to cook with, a tiny and mismatched cutlery set, and a few random plates. There was nothing we could use in the oven such as sheet pans or baking dishes. There is a dishwasher but no dishwasher detergent. There is a washer/dryer, but again, no detergent. The front desk flatly refused to provide many of these items, but begrudgingly gave us a few plates and a warped frying pan from the restaurant. We ended up having to go back into town shortly after our arrival to buy the rest of what we needed. Housekeeping came and made up the rooms only once during our stay. When they did this, they removed any used towels but neglected to replace them with fresh ones, leaving us short the next day. Much of the property is crumbling and overgrown with weeds. The pool is closed with no anticipated opening date. The dock is littered with stacks of old lumber with rusty nails sticking out. This place was probably pretty special in its heyday. The views and location are beautiful, and the size would have made it ideal for large-scale events. Those days are long gone, and this place is now neglected and in rapid decline.

Picture of on-line of garden suite shows a comfortable arm-chair. Am unable to sleep in a bed and the chair looked comfortable enough for me to sleep in. We had to get a garden unit as those are the rooms they allow a dog. The suite had only a hard desk chair. The front desk offered to move us to a suite, to be more comfortable with a couch, but as we had a dog they changed their mind and wouldn't allow it. Be wary of the on-line pictures. No water view either for $437.32 we paid for one night. The lady in the room next to us kept smoking on her balcony, when there is clearly a no smoking policy, clear signage on the balconies of that. We couldn't enjoy our balcony as a result. We complained to the front desk twice. They didn't do anything about it during our stay. The phones in the rooms were out of service. Apparently the phone company was supposed to come to fix. Overall, the stay was disappointing, especially for the price we paid. We should have been compensated somehow, but received nothing at all. I asked for two extra facecloths and was told they didn't have any. Not much selection for the continental breakfast, unless you enjoy cold scrambled eggs. Our meal at the pub was good, but pricy and slow service. They need to do better for what you pay to stay there. The location is lovely, but they could certainly do a lot better for their guests. The bathroom fan sounded like a freight train, was very noisy. I don't recommend staying there. 1/5 because it had a roof.

We had a weekend we will never forget at the Painters Lodge. This is an absolutely stunning area with amazing sunrises and breathtaking sunsets. Our room was very large with a small fridge and even had a stone fireplace (no wood). Bathroom was good sized with everything we needed. Huge sundeck with ample seating. Continental breakfast with lots to choose from was included. We took a whale watching tour we booked from the hotel and it was an experience I will not forget. The dining room was closed but the pub was open with a limited menu. If I had a complaint it was the adjoining room doors, you could hear every word from the rooms. next to you at these doors and I took off one star for that. The Decore is fishing lodge style and the ocean side views are everywhere. A truly wonderful experience that I won't forget and I will be back.

True waterfront fishing lodge. Historic building with a lot of old memories you can feel when you walk inside. The service is great, the restaurant and bar area are ocean facing and absolutely beautiful. The fishing is also great there. Place has swimming pool and they serve continental breakfast

Trying to get ahold of Painters to ask questions about fishing trips as much as changed since we were there pre-Covid. Left 3 voice mails, sent 2 emails, tried central booking (they knew nothing!!). POOR customer service. We have visited over 10 times over the years, and am now searching for other options. Too bad, because the fishing guides they had before were fabulous.

This hotel location is beautiful. It sits right next to Campbell River in beautiful grounds with a small jetty for fishing boats etc. Breakfast is included in the price and is a continental buffet affair - my only criticism about the breakfast was the lack of healthy options. Our room was beautiful, overlooking the river and small jetty. The staff were super helpful.

Painters Lodge has a fabulous history as being one of the better places to stay and dine for decades in this area. The fine dining used to be well praised and looked forward to. Sadly not anymore. Let's do the positive first though...staff were great, really good people without a doubt. Location and outward appearance is great. Rooms though...middle of summer and no AC...uncomfortable...fine dining no longer exists...food is bar food and on a limited menu sadly. Breakfast is standard Wyndham fare but no self help buffet for hot foods. Couldn't get our free water on the second day for some reason. Painters...you're certainly "A La Carte" on the outside but a three star pub on the inside. All seemed very cost restricted and limited.

We just spent a night here. Upon arrival we were so surprised to find that our room was more like a quaint 2-story cottage. It was so spacious! Once we were settled in we had an amazing lunch at the pub. We were seated out on the patio and were able to watch orcas playing in the distance. Such a treat! The food was delicious but the best part was our server, Shauna. She was so fun and personable and really made the experience memorable. This is a fantastic property with terrific staff and we would stay here again.

6 of us spent 3 days here in August and our experience was fantastic. The service was exceptional, food was incredible - thank you Chef Alain; we were very well taken care of. We went fishing with great success, and did a whale watching tour that also did not disappoint. We also used a conference room for a couple of meetings. Overall we are impressed and will return.

We had a nice stay during a week-long trip along the eastern coast of the island. A short ride outside of Campbell River's town centre, it offers views of the discovery passage between CR and Quadra Island. Rooms are dated but cozy. Staff are friendly and provide good recommendations for attractions a d places to eat. Continental breakfast was simple but welcome considering we needed an early start. Views from the pub and lounge deck are beautiful. Harbour seals often come up to the dock at dusk.

Phone this resort before booking to find out what they are really offering. We had reserved a deluxe ocean view room. But, upon arrival, we got down-graded to a back lodge with no view....a pet-friendly room. The low ceiling is oppressive be vs the open beam ceiling I was expecting based on photos. In our down-graded room, we can hear the toilet flushing and floor creaking from the room above us. Our little mini-fridge hummed. Not a good sleep at all. The bath-tub is tiny. I can't even take a relaxing bath. Only one restaurant is open, the pub vs the 3 on their website. The 10 minute water taxi between Painter's Lodge and April Point Lodge (on Quadra Island) is no longer running. We had planned to go over there for an appointment at the spa and lunch. April Point's restaurant and spa are also closed at the time of our stay. Both places are under one owner. The swimming pool is closed for construction. I did find out we could use the tennis court, free of charge, just needed to pick up the rackets at the reception area. Other board games available to use. Most of the water tours from the lodge are not running. The only one running was the 4 hour whale-watching tour. Actually for the length it was the $179/person might be considered reasonable. However, we had to drive to their pier in town. The pier right in front of the lodge wasn't being used to the tour time coinciding with a low tide. My husband had considered doing a fishing tour, they weren't running (it might not be fishing season?). This lodge is not close to town. It is about 15 minute drive from the city of Campbell River. The shuttle is no longer running. The gift shop was closed and we were told it had been for some time. Their are no businesses close to the lodge. Pet charge was $40/night. Very limited menu. Mostly deep-fried pub food. Hamburger and fries $24/night Many reviews race about the view, it isn't exceptional enough to warrant staying here. On the surface, in the lobby, the beautiful rugs, beautiful lobby furniture, wood decor, and lovely grounds, make this place look special but like I said, before booking find out what you are really getting. Our standard room (the one they downgraded us to doesn't look any better than any motel room. Nothing fancy about it at all. And, supper to be had was just greasy pub food and very over-priced drinks. Never coming back and will not recommend it. As I write this I'm considering cancelling the further nights we had booked. p.s. I don't usually write negative reviews, but this place is beyond disappointing. My expectations were high. This was the place that Hollywood stars would pick to stay at in the past, according to the pictures up their stairs (no elevator).

The hotel looks good, great entrance and gardens, but the buildings and rooms need a great deal of maintenance and essential repair. Staff very helpful, but no service to rooms. No safe in the room. Menu limited but food ok

We had a lovely time. From the moment of arrival we were treated wonderfully. Anything we needed was not an issue. Loved our room. Not fancy but who needs fancy when there are wonderful ocean view. High timbered ceilings. Comfy space and beds. Plus a pretty good breakfast was included. We had a great price as off season but even at full price it’s a gem. The lodge is lovely too with a nice lounge with fantastic views and a big warm fireplace. The staff were all kind and helpful. Jennifer snd Alycia ( hope I spelt that ok!) on front desk were so helpful. The lovely lady at breakfast was friendly and also very helpful. We met the manager Peter, and then understood why all the staff we met were kind, courteous and helpful. These qualities come from the top. Peter was very customer centric and professional. We will be back and will bring our friends.

Our room door could not lock making us feel unsafe. Meal in the pub was extremely bland and tasteless. Breakfast tasted better but is standard as in every hotel. Container holding the pepper was so encrusted in the lid that you couldn’t use it. Way to expensive for what you get. I will not stay there again and would not recommend it to anyone.

Great service at front desk, and in the pub. Restaurant was not open at all (must only be open in summer?). Breakfast was very nice with a good selection. Room was very clean, but tired. Bed was hard, upstairs loft floor squeaked, bathtub grout was in need of a good scrubbing, deck boards were spongy. When we asked for a bed topper, one was put on for us and the front desk agent said "we get that a lot". The baseboard heaters in the fireside lounge were rusting, and one of the baseboard heater facias was coming completely off. Overall the resort is in a beautiful setting, but it is clearly tired. Hopefully management will inject some much needed money and TLC into this property. It's rich history and heritage don't deserve the condition the resort is in now.

I reserved a night in the resort for the September long weekend. Upon arriving, we were informed that the pool and hot tub were closed. Sure enough, this was listed on the website but I missed it. I'll own that mistake. The staff informed us that if we wanted to use the facilities at the Saratoga Gardens, we would be reimbursed the price of our admission. While this is a nice gesture, I am not spending $350+ on a night that's also going to involve going to the local sports center to soak in their hot tub. We took it in stride, and decided to get a drink in the lodge pub before our dinner reservation in the dining room. The pub has been poorly maintained, there's a section of wall where a TV used to be mounted but has since been removed. No painting to cover this up, just flaking paint and exposed wall. We both ordered the same cocktail, which tasted wildly different between the two glasses, and neither of them good. Tried to flag the waitress down, to the point where we were actually waving our arms - and no luck. We ended up leaving. You could chalk this up to bad service on a odd night, but I see multiple reviews online highlighting the poor service in the pub. At this point, we weren't feeling optimistic about spending money on an expensive dinner in the dining room. We cancelled our dinner reservation, and went down the highway to a restaurant we knew wouldn't be a letdown. At this point, we probably should have just cancelled the entire stay altogether, but the prospect of finding another room somewhere else on a holiday weekend just didn't sound very fun. The room was perfectly fine. It's not meant to be updated and fancy, it's a lodge on the shore. You're paying for the charm and rustic appeal that comes along with that. Bed was comfortable and the room was clean. Come morning, we decided to give the breakfast buffet a try. You are expected to clear your dishes and put them in a tray by the door on your way out. This in itself is not the end of the world, but since there's no one clearing plates, there's also no one monitoring the buffet stock. Empty chafing dishes, cold food, and two large coffee carafes - both empty. At 9:30 AM, peak breakfast hours. Yet again, not the kind of service you expect at a lodge you're paying good money to stay in. Not every aspect of the lodge was terrible. But the parts that were, stood out enough to make us regret our decision to stay there. I would suggest trying Dolphins down the street.

We spent 2 nights at Painter's Lodge in 2 rooms with 4 adults and 3 kids. We really enjoyed our stay. The rooms were comfortable and clean and fairly spacious. The lodge was a really great place to spend time. We ate in the pub on our first night and the fish tacos were excellent. We spent a fair amount of time just relaxing in the lounge, and the views from there were gorgeous. Staff were friendly and helpful. The whole family really appreciated the free breakfast during our stay. Unfortunately the pool was being renovated during our time at Painter's Lodge, but it looked like it would be a nice way to spend a sunny afternoon someday when it is completed.

Large lodge, with a nice view over the ocean. Rooms are spacious. Fridge was nog working, no microwave. Breakfast is limited (muffins, coffee, cereals), no bread/bagels. Small fitness available. Pool closed for the season. April spa closed for the season. Good value for the money we paid (one of the cheaper options available in Campbell).

What a great place to come relax. Sit out on the balcony and enjoy the fresh ocean air. It's beena while where I've stayed somewhere that had every surface clean! Super impressive. I actually looked in the common missed spots and everything was clean! Beds were comfy, room had lots of space. Will definitely be back and have already recommended the place to some of our friends.

Just went for supper at the Tyee Pub! Very limited menu! Over charged! Charged for order of fries that actually came with the meal! Paid $3.00 for each little container of watery gravy! Ordered a small salad that was mainly lettuce and extremely small. They need to update their website menu so people don't go expecting the menu on their website!!

Beautiful hotel and grounds. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. We were very disappointed the dining room was not open yet..they could have told us before we booked, but the pub was good. Our only complaint otherwise was the bathroom which was so tiny you couldn't bend over, and the sink was beside the bed.
