My family and I went to the Pantmawr Inn on Sunday for Sunday lunch; there were about 10 of us attending. Overall it was a fairly standard procedure - no frills and got the job done - but i wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. There are better places in Cardiff to go for Sunday Roast (at any price range). Food: I had pate and toast to start. The pate was okay (a bit too course for my liking), but the toast was terrible. I didn’t realise bread was such a hot commodity right now because with the 4 scant quarters I was rationed, you’d think the Germans were back flying overhead. I had the beef Sunday roast for my main. This was fairly good actually. The beef was tender (although not nice thin slices like you’d expect but rather a slow cooked thing - nice either way). The veg was good. However the roast potatoes were truly abysmal. It was almost like they’ve never selected a roasting potato before because these tasted and felt like undercooked peeled baked potatoes. They weren’t crispy at all and they felt raw in the centre, and they were huge as well so you couldn’t even try and be polite and attempt to finish them. Staff/service: We were left without cutlery after our starters so had to wait a while after our mains were served before we could eat. The wait time for service was already quite long, so this last minute hurdle before eating was particularly frustrating. I asked one of the waitresses if they served mushy peas with the fish and chips rather than garden peas and she said no (which influenced my decision to go for the roast)… later I saw many other diners with mushy peas! Put the option of “mushy or garden” on the menu to limit your staffs’ confusion perhaps? Lastly, why don’t you have some sort of uniform for your waiters/waitresses? Half the staff were walking around in sports gear (tight gym stuff) which just wasn’t nice to have around near the dining table. I’m sure they were clean but I’ve seen that sort of attire in my local gym and it just reminded me of sweat.

Came here for few drinks with friends on NYE at the recommendation of a close friend to watch the football. The place itself is warm, cosy, nicely decorated, and has some pretty good screens to watch the game on. So initial feelings were certainly promising. However having waited 5 minutes without seeing a single person who worked there, we finally saw a member of staff (the biting dog) who immediately shouted at us, saying we couldn’t sit down anywhere unless we had a ticket for the NYE event, fine no problem. She then advised that instead we watch the game outside in the heated undercover section which showed the game, to which we were greatful, and took them up on the offer, again, fine. But then, it started to go downhill… Instead of serving us at this point, she called out the 2 people behind us in the queue by their first names, and asked them what they wanted. Now it was fairly clear this was a regulars pub, but to disrespect people that clearly to our faces was extremely unnecessary & uncomfortable. We were then served by a different member of staff who was absolutely fine, and then went outside. 20 minutes later however, we decided to go back in merely to get another drink, to which we were stopped almost immediately by a man putting his arm out asking us, “where do you think you’re going”, so which we explained to the bar to get a drink. It’s worth noting at this point that he didn’t introduce who he was, additionally he seemed to be standing next to some friends who started giggling, in addition to what seemed to be his own children. So at this point, assuming he’d had a few too many, we smiled and just tried to walk past him, at which point to squared up to us and announced that he was in fact the owner, and no one comes in without his say so, was honestly pretty remarkable. However, staying calm and respectful we explained what had happened above when we arrived, and that we were simply outside watching the game and only wished to get a drink, then return outside. At this point, the owner had relaxed slightly, however once again made it clear that this was HIS pub, and you don’t just get to walk past him when he asks us a question. Once again I reiterate, this was in front of his children. Before we were able to continue however, (the biting dog) leaned over a table and screamed that she told us to stay outside as there were no seats for us, at which point the owner then turns around and tells her to shut up as he’s handling it. It really has to be the most unnecessary sequence of events I have witnessed at any establishment. We were allowed to pass, at which point my friend and I looked at each-other and simply said we won’t be coming back here again. Just for good measure also, when we then had our drinks, we passed the biting dog who said “I told you I’d make you go back outside”, an absolutely bemusing comment to literal paying customers. I do want to finally say that I completely understand they were doing preparations for a NYE event, hence why we couldn’t sit inside, however the issue lies with the pure aggressiveness of the apparent owner, and the one member of staff who went out of her was to ruin our nights. Safe to say we will not be returning here, which is a shame as it is a fairly local pub for us all.

Food was nice but could have been more choice. Service was good too. No starters on offer at all, gammon or steak on the grill. Not much choice at all. Also disabled access wasn't signposted.

I hadn't been here for many a year, but my daughter took me for a treat. Great food! There was a really nice atmosphere. It was busy, so servers didn't get to us as quickly as they might have but it really wasn't an issue. Lovely child friendly beer garden too. The pub is obviously loved by the locals.

Haven't been to the pub since the 1990s. Good to see it has survived. Had a lovely lunch of Thai fishcakes. Landlady was able to change our booking as our previous appointment finished earlier than expected .

We held my late father in law's celebration (wake) at this quaint hidden away pub and I can't fault any of it. The staff were absolutely fantastic who set the conservatory area (including upstairs) aside for us. The staff were also very patient with the children running around. They even arranged for a photo slideshow to be displayed on the main television showing his life in photos. It helped make the end of a very difficult day relaxed and people just sitting around talking about the past. Thank you

I have visited this pub for special occasions a few times now. I booked for last Saturday over telephone and offered to call back Friday with orders to make life easier for the pub. Called Friday and asked to do via email, no email address provided sp did via the contact us form, arrived on Saturday and asked the bar lady had they received our order and was told yes. 15 of us waited and eventually were told the order had not been received. We sat in the conservatory and waited over 25 minutes before my daughter approached a waitress. Regardless of being told we would receive a free bottle of wine, this was my dad's 81 st birthday celebration and six children were not even given their desserts. You asked for me to prove I had sent this order which I didn't have to do anyway! This pub is lovely but your staff need the correct training to make sure your customers are looked after. So unfair on a family looking forward to a day out. AND NO WE DIDN'T WANT DISCOUNT WE WANTED OUR MEALS!!

Bold statement but this is my favourite pub! It's what a pub should be, lovely food, lovely atmosphere and the best part, the service. We're somewhat regulars or at least recognised by what I've always assumed is the landlady (hope I'm right!). Came here today and never disappoints, if you catch them open, stop by!

Booked a Sunday lunch for two. The service was excellent, the food was really great, freshly cooked and a homemade traditional roast of beef brisket, roasties, homemade yorkies, carrots, mashed swede and peas. We had the extra caulli cheese and it was all delicicious and excellent value with very generous portions, it's no surprise this friendly welcoming pub is such a popular place for families on a Sunday!

Great local pub with good selection of real ale, nice food and great atmosphere. And superb friendly staff. What more could you want from a pub? When we were there on Friday night there was a brilliant choir singing Christmas carols.

I went there for a meal with some friends and I had the classic hunters chicken. In many pubs it's variously called the chicken and bacon stack or taverner's chicken. I absolutely loved it, and felt compelled to tell the bar staff it was the best hunter's chicken I've ever had. Even the chips were perfect. In fact I'm going there again this week and looking forward to ordering the same again.

Amazing Sunday lunch today. We overheard other contented customers saying that the Sunday lunch is the best in Cardiff and we totally agree. Book online not to be disappointed . Absolutely delicious 🤤 and highly recommended 👍 excellent attentive staff too x

Table of 4 booked for a very busy Mother's Day. The Sunday lunch is next level, really hard to do it justice with words alone. Nice clean venue and a real countryside cottage feel to it. The dessert was cracking too. We were planning our next visit during the meal. Worth. Every. Penny.

Haven't been there for a few years. Pleasantly pleased with the look & atmosphere. James and Jen have put alot of thought and money into transforming the pub, while still keeping the history and character that I have known for 50 years!!

Lovely Christmas meal at the Pantmawr Inn today. As per usual. Group of 11 of us and it was absolute perfection. Staff were so helpful and polite. They all couldn’t do enough for us. They worked so hard and it was busy, they always have a smile for the customers. Perfect 3 course Christmas meal. Definitely recommend the Beef Brisket. Prices are very very reasonable too. Big thank you to the landlady and landlord Jenny and James for making it a lovely day. You run lovely Pub.

Such a lovely place with a calm atmosphere stome walls and an open fire. Or for summer days a large garden..and play equipment for young children. Great homemade food without high prices..

  • 3/5 Haydn R. 1 year ago on Google
Food was lovely, however at no point did the young girl say the plates were scolding hot, she couldn't hold the food herself, half the food fell onto the table, I went to stop the rest of the food from falling and I burnt my finger on the curry bowl, which was stupid hot. Instant blister! Dessert came out on a slate plate, bear in mind there are no sides to this slate and I had ice-cream. It was dripping down the sides of the slate before it got me. Experience kind of ruined really and I'm unlikely to return.

The Pantmawr Inn is a lovely pub that serves a range of drinks and classic British pub food. There is a children's playground outside so is great for families. Outdoor seating allows you to enjoy the summer while having a drink and food.

Not really impressed food was OK nothing special. Real chips not sure what that means lots of ours were wasted due to the fact all the imperfections in the chips were still there I.e. there was a lot of potato eyes and skin damage making them black and .unapertizing Atmosphere was fine, staff very nice, good selection of beers ,beer garden was messy lots of litter. Shame could have been really nice.

Visited today with family for my birthday. Had not been for a long time, since my children were small so weren't sure what to expect. Lovely Sunday roasts all round. Plenty of vegetables, more if we wanted. The meat was plentiful and service was fast. Thank you We won't leave it so long next time.
