#New Year Edition Forget Times Square! If you're looking for a truly unforgettable New Year's Eve experience, ditch the skyscrapers and head to the heart of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Tha Phae Gate, the city's ancient eastern gate, transforms into a vibrant hub of celebration, offering a unique blend of tradition and revelry

The gate is a remnant of ancient Chiang Mai, and it is the most popular gathering and entertainment spot in the city. It is surrounded by a series of old city walls, creating a square-like space where you can take photos, admire the scenery, and play with friendly pigeons.

Always fun to stroll through the Tha Phae gate. There are often festivals or activities here, including formal and informal live music. You can always find food stands and souvenirs. There are many shops on either side of the gate.

Went there for 2023 countdown and it was the best feeling we all have enjoyed. Fireworks and stage was not the grand set up. It was meant to have a small cozy feeling for everyone. People are selling the paper lanterns, just keep a look out and buy when you can. Seems like it is not supported by the local authorities. The old structure and the light display along with the fireworks completed our new year. Please visit this place when you are in Chiang Mai.

Great reminder of the history of Chiang Mai and the Lanna Kingdom. What this must have looked like when it was first completed would have been a great sight. Plenty of people like to pose for a photo here so getting a memory here without others in the picture is quite difficult.

Historical landmark in Chang Mai, remaining of an old Town gate. A place to meet interesting and weird people. I loved the many pigeons that can be feed.

Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai (Old City) Tha Phae Gate faces east and signifies prosperity. Historically, it was the main gate through which monks, traders, and diplomats went to enter Chiang Mai. Much of the original city wall fell to ruin, but Tha Phae Gate remains. Today, it is the site of many cultural activities and festival celebrations. Tha Phae Gate is the east entrance to the old city district. It is part of the wall that surrounded the city at its founding. Unlike earlier Thai settlements that were oval, Chiang Mai’s architectural plan called for a rectangular moat and wall. Their purpose was to protect the city from Burmese invasion.

I love that place, it’s so historical. Thanks to the street photographers at this place, I and my friends have many great pictures. We honestly love Chiangmai more than Bangkok. And the fee for a shoot is 100 bath but you can bargain with them

It was lovely spending 5 nights in Chaing Mai, we stayed within the city walls, so it easy to see the remaining of the old wall, and most of the beautiful Temples. The Sunday Market was amazing and a must do while you are there.

The cool photo shooting spot. The landmark of Chiangmai. Don't be frightened up when you hear some weird roar sounds, because there will be some local photographers who scare the birds for picture 😂

Ancient wall, moat and numerous "gates" are historical landmarks surrounding The Old City. Cool to see and experience a bit of centuries old structures to protect The Old City from Burmese invaders.

Apparently the most famous spot in Chiang Mai... which for us is overly hyped. It's among the favored location for most festival events, concerts, large-screen TV shows, etc. It's also used for tourist shots featuring the many pigeons there. They will lure the pigeons by giving them some food, then will suddenly scare them by scratching an empty plastic bottle to capture all the pigeons flying in time for the shutter. Cruel! The pictures here is getting the gate ready for 2023 countdown. The last 5 pictures were taken in May 2022 when Thailand was still not fully opened to international travelers due to covid. We were lucky then to visit the gate without the herds of tourists.

There isn't much to see here, apart from the old historical door Tha Phae and the walls, which are both well maintained and gorgeous. Next to the entrance, there's a metal sign reporting all the information about the structure. There are 2 downsides: there are too many tourists and too many pigeons (which are attracted by the food thrown by tourists). Anyway, I suggest you see them with your own eyes, because they are an undeniable proof of the history of this city.

Tha Phae Gate is a beautiful and historic landmark that is worth visiting when you are in Chiang Mai. It is a great place to start your exploration of the city and to experience the rich culture and history of Chiang Mai. Tha Phae Gate is one of the four gates that still stand today from the old city walls of Chiang Mai. It is the eastern gate of the city and is the most well-known and visited of the four gates. The gate is named after the nearby Tha Phae Road, which was once a major trading route between Chiang Mai and the rest of Thailand. The gate was built in the 14th century and is made of brick and mortar. It is decorated with intricate stucco reliefs and has a large archway that leads into the old city. The gate is a popular tourist destination and is often used as a starting point for exploring the city.

My memories of this place is impress and efficient. I spent only 30mins there but got to enjoy the historical feels of the site and left with 100+ photos no less! There’s local there ready to help you taking your photos and slow-no shots. They didn’t put a price to their service so it is up to you but I truly appreciate the help coz I was alone on my solo trip, so they are part of my good memories while I’m there. 😊

Knew that there is a Sunday Night Bazaar just right inside the Tha Phae Gate, so we choose to visit on Sunday. The gate itself was very crowded, many people wanted to take videos with pigeons, so do we! 😂 After that we straight away entered the night bazaar. The night bazaar is so big! There are a lot of different stalls all along, food, drinks, handcrafted Items, clothes, etc. All of us were very tired after the walk and we had a foot massage somewhere near the gate.

An intriguing and surprising place, full of a mix of people, from locals, students, tourists and families. Easily accessible by all roads of this walled city, it was great to see the preservation of Chiang Mai's Walled City looking quite splendid in the beautiful sunshine. Definitely worth a visit as there are lots of markets, eateries and public spaces to explore within Tha Phae Gate area.

  • 5/5 Zin Ko Ko L. 2 years ago on Google
Seems it is the most famous gate. Christmas lights at the gate were awesome. The main road from the gate leads to the main square of the old town where most significant monuments and temples are situated around.

Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand. it was capital of the independent Lanna Kingdom Its Old City area still retains vestiges of walls and moats as cultural and religious center. It’s also home to hundreds of elaborate Buddhist temples, where festival is happening at Thapae gate, i have been there in Nov 2013 at the time of light festival

Old city wall. Very popular photo spot among local and foreign visitors. Many cafe, restaurants and massage places within the wall that marked out a squarish old city area. There is a Sunday Market which is a night market whical stretches from the west wall all the way to the wast end.

Possibly the most famous spot in all of Chiang Mai, and the location for most festival events, concerts, large-screen TV shows, etc. When they aren't home, it's used for tourist shots featuring the many pigeons there. The pictures I've provided here, relate to the recent Songkran Festival, which was really the only event that happened in 2021 due to covid.

Nice place to hang out. There are some benches by the river, some shops and cafes which open till late night. I enjoyed my late night coffee sessions there.

Gives the feeling of entering the old Lanna Kingdom capital city! A good starting point and landmark to explore the Old city. Unfortunately, do take note that a mascot was just put up yesterday and aiyoh, why place it there. Maybe if the mascot was sitting on the wall would at least have been funny 🤣

  • 3/5 Stephanie D. 2 years ago on Google
Interesting piece of history, worth a look, but don't expect much. We visited during Songkran and they had a stage set up with performances and an area to hang out.

  • 1/5 Katethip V. 1 year ago on Google
This place is way overhyped and very touristy. The local line up to takes pictures with pigeon flying with the bricks wall on the back drop. Even if you look around, small merchandise will come up and asked if you would like to take pictures and will charge you for their service. It's a nice photogenic place but the risk of being that close with wild pigeon is not my cup of tea

  • 5/5 Dorans P. 1 year ago on Google
This place is cool . I love thailand as its all about the photos ... they have beautiful setups . Flowers and objects to take photos at. See them feed the pigeons then scare ... not hurt .. but scare them to fly for the photo. I though that was cool

Beautiful old city gate. A location in Chiang Mai that you should come visit. There can be festivals or events during different seasons/time of the year. Note: there is a lot of birds just chilling around this location and so as tourist

Nice tourist spot. People selling food for the birds here. Locals helping you take dope pictures and videos for 100 baht! Such a cool experience to see all the birds and walk around. Come to the Sunday night market!

  • 5/5 Jaynaxissa 9 months ago on Google
Cool place. Lots of pigeons which I don’t like but also many people use them as a prop 😆 I like the wall but it’s hard for me to find the right time to take good photo (postcard material) the vibe during the day time and night time are different.

  • 4/5 Xuan Tho P. 7 months ago on Google
Must see at Chiang Mai. Weekend nights will have night market with many craft made by local. On morning you can buy some food for birds from some guys around Tha Phae Gate. But they will disappear if have some police around, so should be pass the gate and come inside. Left side have 1 Seven-11, buy a snack and you will have many bird around you

  • 5/5 Nga C. 5 months ago on Google
The wall with old colour but impressing and beautiful. It is sunny but not to be shine, there are a lot of big trees so the weather becomes cool. Also have a lot of pigeons. The view is beautiful and peace.

Our hotel was very close to Tha Phae Gate. While going to the hotel from Chiang Mai airport, we drove around the walled city and the gate. It's a historical gate, revered by the locals. There is an open area in front of the gate where temporary stages are set up for performances.

Eastern Gate of Chiang mai = New City. Amazing Ancient gate that built in 13th century. In year 1296. This is the main gate that still stand still with the best architecture during that era. From red clay bricks. Built in square... And one of the well preserve up to this days. Change look at night with their beautiful lights to highlight the structure. Besides nearby the shopping aleys that very busy at night. It's a famous tourist sport for photos and special occasions. Many weddings photo taken here as its look very nice. You may also encounter local styling birds food here... For pigeons. At this is ancient structure so not climb, damages, or write anything on it. Let's preserve this heritage.
