I walked place this place a couple times before decided to take a chance, because It looks like type of a restaurant for Thai local people. Looks very basic, simple old style. I ordered some from the menu and a curry from the precooked with a dish of jasmine rice. - They put Jasmine rice to a blue plastic plate and had it heat up at the microwave. And that was 50 baht!!! - the curry I ordered had a bit of smell from the fat-pork like the food has been recycled for days. Such a small bowl and precooked food cost me 95 baht!!! - my partner had crispy pork belly stir fried with snow peas. And that was 120 baht for thin slices of pork!! Plus with only one option of beer(Chang) in can. That was very not good experience. The restaurant looks like it's been there over generations. I would expect them to have quality food and fair price. The only good thing that I could think of is The people there were sweet, nice and polite. Just really need to improve the quality of everything else.

YOUR BEST SPOT FOR THAI SOUL FOOD I’ve been coming here for years and it still seems like the best kept secret in Chiangmai. Not a fancy place, but definitely a healing place. Consistently the best curries I’ve found in Thailand, and the friendliest staff anywhere. Big, open dining area The location is just steps away from Tha Phae Gate. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Probably the best curries I had in all of Thailand. Apparently one of the places cherished by Anthony Bourdain. Tried the kao soi, green curry, veg curry, chicken curry with potato, papaya salad and mango sticky rice. All were excellent.

Classic roadside restaurant popular with the locals. I love the no-frills down to earth vibe of this place. The khao soi was delicious and the Chiang Mai sausage (sai ua) was great too. Curry seems to be the sell here, so I'd definitely give the green curry a try on a future trip. Highly recommend this place.

I have spent many months in CM over the last couple decades. I have eaten my way around CM. Aroon Rai is one of my favorite places to eat. The food is so good there are no words to describe it. Just perfect Northern Thai dishes at a great price. The staff is friendly, and the owner always greets you with a beautiful smile. I am looking forward to many lunches there next month. Try the tuna, it's unforgettable.

not a huge fan of both of their curry and khao soi. The chicken curry was too watery and not creamy at all. Mine was filled with potatos with only chicken scraps. Both dishes lacked flavor and was not spicy at all.

(Translated by Google) I saw a lot of reviewers, so let's go and eat. Side dishes are priced around 70-90, but the dishes are small. - Hang Lay Pork Curry is good. But add a lot of ginger - Naem is delicious, I like it. - Roasted Larb is not delicious. - Sai Oua is not delicious. The taste is not rich, fresh, the price is not suitable for the quantity, I don't remember 85/95 baht. P.S. In the evening, the shop will bring the Lightning (Siberian dog) out to sit.

Ordered the Khao Soi with chicken and Thai Iced milk Tea for ฿115. The Khao Soi was a little spicy for me even without the chilli but the spiciness was neutralised by the iced milk tea. Staff were very friendly. Did not get a chance to try out the other dishes which were recommended online. Would definitely return to try them again.

Khao Soi, this was great, I would call this my new favorite food in Thailand. My girlfriend does not like coconut milk taste, so I did not have any trouble helping her with her problem, a Few minutes later her bowl was empty also. Will be back for more.

Suwadeeha! Aloha Guy found the most Authentic Thai food of all Chiang Mai. The Chicken Curry was good and thankfully not so sweet. The sausage was good. The Phad Thai could have needed more taste but I enjoyed it. Overall awesome food.

Things must have changed since Anthony Bourdain went here, the khao soi is just okay, nothing out of this world. The flavor profile wasn't anything complex, just tasted like curry, and the chicken was a bit dry. Service was quick and it was only 70thb though.

(Translated by Google) Thailand, the Land of Smiles except by Aroon Rai. At 20 pm we were in a very rude manner told the restaurant was full and the tables were releasing. A gentleman, seeing us with our son, told us that he was leaving, but the waitress told us we could have to wait hours to sit down, and we also said that we would wait gladly. The boys after we just asked if there was place suffered made them sit in one of the free tables, while we were expecting even totally ignored. We had been here years ago and we would have liked to have a good memory of this place with our son, apparently not interested owners treat customers well.

  • 4/5 J D. 5 years ago on Google
I had the Khao Soi curry (the first curry option in the menu, 70 bahts) and chicken pad thai (because I had yet to have it since arriving in Thailand, 55 bahts). The curry was a little too oily for me, but the curry seasoning was d e l i c i o u s. I would order a side of rice to take advantage of the extra curry sauce they provide with the dish. The pad thai was okay, however, I shouldn't have ordered a noodle dish at a curry restaurant. The portions and prices are average. We added a water (10 bahts) and coke (15 bahts), and the grand total came out to 150 bahts. Not bad, not bad.

Another gem of Chiang Mai for local food. The Khao Soi noodles with chicken soup was delicious. The pork curry with ginger was just melting in my mouth, absolutely delicious. The staff just right and kind. The restaurant looks like a massive garage but it's one of the best foods I tried in the nearby.

A STANDARD AFFAIR Decided to drop in for a quickie and ordered their green curry with chicken and egg omelette with vegetables. Nothing fancy - pretty standard local fare. The omelette was good but curry was too salty and watery for my liking. Nevertheless it’s still good thai food and decent eating.

Wandered past for lunch. Had their pork curry with ginger , sai oer chiang mai sausage, a hot tom yan kung, som tam and mango sticky rice. Chiang Mai at its most simple yet delicious. People may under rate on google, but their style is delicious and direct. There is very little hidden and the food is honestly exactly right for an authentic local restaurant. Two thumbs up. Would eat here again. Their sticky rice when served hot with the cold mango is a special, satisfying end to a yummy meal.😋😁👍👍

Went there to get Gaeng Hung Lay - which is normally with super soft and juicy Pork belly - in there menu described being with pork as well - it came with red beef, it was tough, and salty as hell - nothing than my first experience trying this famous dish - so if you're looking for this dish, maybe search somewhere else Pad thai we had was nothing special either, very oily and greasy

Been coming here for maybe 20 years, it’s the very best northern restaurant in town. Friendly and helpful, they do all the usual Thai dishes, but the real gems are the chicken/veg curry, and hang lay (pork with ginger, a real speciality). Get a somtam (they’ll do spicy if you ask) and some sticky rice, and enjoy superb, no-frills food. Don’t be put off by the basic feel to the place- you’ll be missing out on a treat if you do! Wonderful, a taste of the old Chiang Mai.

This restaurant is located on the outside Moat Road. It's quite spacious, with lots of undercover seating. Fans help keep you feeling cool. The menu has lots of Thai food to choose from. We chose our favourite hung lay curry (pork and ginger curry), northern sausage, and sticky rice. The food is delicious. The traffic noise is obvious, but not so noisy it's annoying. Clean bathrooms - always a bonus. Happy to eat here again.

We stopped at the restaurant because there was so many people eating there. We had a good feeling about this place. We ordered hang-lae curry, northern sausage, chicken curry with potatoes, stir-fried morning glory and mango sticky rice. All of the food was very good and we now understand why they stay busy. Recommended!

The curry taste sweet, and is not subtle.. it is really quite sweet. it is different from the typical curry in other SEA like singapore, Malaysia and southern Thailand. Maybe is their style... but definitely not something I like. Maybe is more suitable for European

I have been visiting Aroon Rai for many years to eat their delicious curries. After an enforced 3 year break due to the pandemic I'm finally back, and delighted to say that it's as good as ever. It's hard to choose which h is better, the chicken and potato curry or the pork and ginger - best to order both. They also do a mean som tam and if you're lucky they'll have their amazing fried chicken. Add delightful service and bargain prices to the mix and you can't go wrong. In my opinion this is the best place to try northern Thai food is Chiang Mai!
