This place typifies why I love about the "out of city" temples. They incorporate nature as an integral part of the environment and you get a totally different and more peaceful experience experience. This is spread out over a large area and has an unusual feature with tunnels running under the Pagoda. Lovely sound of birds singing in the trees and Cockerell calling. On the path from the entrance there are "cartoon like" illustrations each with a message about life and living.

This is so big big temple with 35 places to go around but actually there are 5 places is private so you can not come in. No need to buy ticket but you just need to pay 20bth to go inside the tunnel. This is so amazing temple.

Very beautiful old temple area. When we went there was a modern art exhibition in the tunnel. They have a pond where you can feed fish as well (and a big python swimming in it). Quite exciting! :-) it's just a short walk to the animal sanctuary and even older temple ruins of you fancy.

I visited this temple on a Sunday evening. It was not too crowded. The temple looks really old with a man made old cave and a stupa. Pros 1. Plenty of car parking space. 2. Interesting old style temple with cave like structure. The lighting elevates the experience. 3. Tickets were priced at 20 THB in 2023 4. It was not too far from Nimmann. 5. Few animals like dogs, squirrels and chickens roam freely in the temple ground. Cons 1. The temple could be reached by a narrow 2 lane road. 2. The temple ground might not be of general liking.

Wat Umong was very kool. The temple grounds were beautiful. We saw chickens, squirrels, bats, and two howling beagles. Inside the tunnels was neat. Went there with Trip Guru and our wonderful guide “Banana”. I would love to go back and explore the whole temple complex

As iconic as it’s photogenic .. Reminiscing back in the university years, I was pleasantly here for the first time and super-impressed by how magical this temple really was. And mercifully, it remained somewhat the same when my trouper and I returned here nearly 2 decades later. The incessant surge of serenity, as we’re stepping in, within the sacred tunnel airily past our bodies and left us feeling some kind of spiritual awakening. If you guys happen to be there, take your precious time and respect other valued privacy 👼🏼🙏🏻

This Temple is Dharma Practice Garden too. So people who visit can see Dharma Quotes Sign on the tree around the jungle. Umong mean tunnel, This 700th years temple is difference from another temple in thailand because there have tunnel around the Stupa. In the tunnel have many buddha image on the wallhold. The Architect has super natural imagine The Light Channel bring the sun light from the sky in to the Tunnel. The position of buddha in the wallhold is suitable, the light behind the buddha emphasize to the enlightment. Between I visit it raining when I look out from the tunnel to the yard it is the one of beautiful view of my life.

Worth the trip out of Chiang Mai to visit this Temple Complex. It's a nice change from the city Temples. We came here on our scooter - an easy ride. There's quite a lot to see. The tunnels are particularly interesting. Wear good footwear - the ground can be quite slippery in places. We only had an hour to look around so weren't able to see it all. Give yourself a couple of hours.

A beautiful temple with a small cave or a large tunnel that you can meditate in. It also has a museum of relics and inspired art. I think you can also come here if you want to be a monk. This place is huge to walk around.

Beautiful Temple surrouding with tall trees. The temple itself is very modest and once stepped in you can sense the serenity throughout the temple ground. The interesting point of attraction is the short tunnel underneath pagoda.

Was introduced by friendly locals to visit this old temple which have much stories and teachings. It’s a beautiful, magical temple to go to with surprising little tunnels and a huge pagoda to admire, relax beside and the whole place feels surreal, like in a set of an Indiana Jones adventure minus the action. Exploring the temple makes us feel so calm, mesmerised and walked up the spiritual self in us. There are pigeons and fishes to feed where you can purchase feeds at just 10bath. There are so many inspirational & live quotes to discover and reflect. Zen place, highly recommended, must go!

Nice and good vibe, many parking lot. The place is quite quiet & few visitor during weekday (i visited on Fri and saw few group of Thais and Chinese). Worth to visit once in your life. Free of charge for Thais. And 20 THB for non Thais. Found 2 cute beagle dogs, very friendly and smart.

A bit away outside the city so you need to take a Grab or scooter. A beautiful temple in a nice natural setting, but did not match my expectations, especially the caves, so giving it 4 stars. Still worth a visit though.

Wat Umong dates back to the 13th Century and consists of a range of old ruins, meditation tunnels and a large unpainted stupa. The temple complex also has a monastery so there are always monks walking around, often circling the stupa in prayer.

(Translated by Google) Wat Umong - is another important temple in Chiang Mai. And is considered an ancient monument that is located in Chiang Mai for more than 700 years. Originally built in the Phaya Mang Rai period, after the Lanna people have renovated the chedi which is on top. And built a tunnel by laying bricks on the north side of the pagoda But now this plaster layer has almost completely shaken off. There is only a portion of the vaulted ceiling in the tunnel that appears frescoes. As for the outside, almost the entire area is no longer visible. Only the bricks left. And brick for tunnel structure only In 2003 there was a major restoration of the tunnel under the supervision of the Fine Arts Department. The tunnel structure has been strengthened. Therefore found more evidence Is the structure, each tunnel is made of bricks Separate to each channel In the tunnel there are 4 passageways that can be connected to each other. 20 bahts for the entry and it’s definitely with the value. There are quite a few facilities to walk pass. There’s food giving hall, monks resting places and some small stalls. The building is very old but very nice to walk around. The very tall building is able to walk one round, maybe can make a wish? Heard there was river behind, but didn’t manage to go.

This place is free to visit and enjoy the tranquility as you walk around the area. Take pictures of the beautiful pagoda and enjoy the cool as you walk into the tunnels to visit the statues of Buddha. Do take time to take in the beauty of the place. There is no need to rush.

A unique temple complex on the hillside to the west of Chiang Mai city, well worth a visit. It features a number of spotless tunnels and statues in the centre of the grounds, plus a number of interesting statues, exhibitions and a large stupa within the grounds. There are a number of paths to follow and a large lake with an island and bridges. A large number of turtles can be seen here.

The cave temple is nice and cool while weather is hot outside. I went on a Sunday and there were a number of devotees and local tourists. Although it's a meditation centre, it's a little too noisy for practice on weekends.

Temple hidden amongst a jungle. For those who like the 'jungle temple' experience, then I would also recommend Wat Phra Lat on the Monk Trail. Very serene experience and the additional of a pond is just a cherry on top.

One of the most special temples in Thailand. A must visit in Chiang Mai. It’s recommended to visit there during late afternoon when it’s not that hot and not many visitors. It closes at 20:00 so you have a plenty of time. It’s like a tunnel of time, taking you to 700 years ago ....

(Translated by Google) From Suan Dok Gate, the west gate of Chiang Mai city, head west on Suthep Road and turn left (south) on the alley Soi 4 in the city. It is in a slightly confusing place. Since you can put a motorcycle in the back of the entrance rotary, it is closer to the cave if you go to the back and stop, it feels good to walk in the woods, there are temples, meditation classes and museums in the precincts .. The mossy stone statue in the depths of the forest, the stone steps, the caves, and the quiet environment isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city make you feel very peaceful. It is convenient to take a plastic bag with you to take off your shoes and carry it around, the altar in the cave is worshiped by local worshipers, and the sunbeams from the outside create a mysterious atmosphere. The pagoda has a characteristic shape like a bell on top in Sukhothai style. It seems that the first King Menrai of Chiang Mai invited monks from Sri Lanka and donated 11 bamboo forests to build them in the Sri Lankan style. By digging a tunnel with two entrances, the temple became known as the "Wat Umong" tunnel temple and seems to be the training center of the adjacent temple. This is my favorite spot in Chiang Mai.

👍👍 It's quite a large platform with a breathtaking view of Chiang Mai. You can park your vehicle right after the curve of the street and walk to the end of the viewpoint. Next to the viewpoint, there's a sort of stair that leads to a bathroom (unused, abandoned and dirty) and a little stall where you c...
